  • I started digging deeper into the art of photography in 2018. Five years later and I'm only just realizing I was looking at everything backwards. In this video, I want to discuss some of the mindset shifts that helped me overcome this huge blindspot.

    Over the years I've rethought and reevaluated where I want to be as a photographer. Even now I'm considering a lot of things that I feel I should do to change my approach. It's a constant process, never let yourself get stagnant.
    The switch from photographer mode to dad mode is always a great thing. I do miss when my girls were little like that.

      It's such a joy getting to watch my daughter grow up and experience the world around her. She's super curious and wants to see everything and be a part of everything! I am completely honored to be her dad.
      I think you're totally right, every so often, it's probably really wise to reassess and ask some deep questions, especially if you're not being challenged as much.

    The last part about social media was spot on. Instagram really doesn’t like it if you start posting stuff different to your normal modus operandi. And that is a real problem. If asked, I usually say I’m a gig photographer, but really I’m interested in all aspects of the art. And that is incredibly problematic for how Instagram works. The algorithm clearly struggles with anyone who just posts anything or everything. This can be very demoralising if your just starting out and not sure where to turn or how to push forward if you’re having to work against a platform that doesn’t work intuitively, or as expected.

    • @JudeStreicherPhoto
      @JudeStreicherPhoto  9 місяців тому +1

      Yeah, that’s definitely the tricky part of sharing on social media. I wish it wasn’t. It would be cool if there was a way to share and connect with artist from around the world that was more based on variety.

    Thanks Jude for creating this video. The topic is so right on and your points are very relevant. I’ve struggled mightily with labels, and continue to shrug them off, not easily or quickly, but finding my soul, and my vision of life and the world is a journey. I also thank Sean Tucker as he and a few other Tubers help keep me guided and open minded. Great job, and keep up the great work being a dad!

    Finally the algorithm suggested me something that I truly appreciate. I wholeheartedly agree with most of the things you said. As a poet and as a photographer, I have come to the similar conclusions from time to time: art has to strive for meaning, one has to ask, "why?", one has to find themself first and only then can they make the best of what they have. Thanks for the reminder that the best gears are the ones I already have. I liked your photos, too. Keep up the good work, man. Subscribed.

    Lots of solid reflection in this one. I definitely did a lot of this too and underwent similar deconstruction and reidentifying what I actually wanted. While good advice to try and help avoid this, I think it’s part of the journey too. Glad you’re getting out and about and found your groove 👍. Ultimately it comes down to enjoyment for you, the labels, categories, gear obsession, etc. all don’t really matter

      Thank you, sir! You're probably right. The journey through mistakes and triumphs and questions and confusions and occasional brick walls was (and is) a necessity to keep growing just as a person. I expect to keep delving deeply into my craft for many many years. What made you decide to capture the photos you capture, if you don't mind me asking?

      @@JudeStreicherPhoto good question. I've always gravitated to hiking and meditation outside as a way to feel grounded. I used to (and still do to some extent) get there by hiking and running, but photography is much easier to get into a calm mindset. And I've never had any interest in street because I don't really like crowds, and only feel open enough to do portraits for friends & family. So sticking to the trails it is!

    • @JudeStreicherPhoto
      @JudeStreicherPhoto  9 місяців тому +1

    Hi! I'm a new subscriber ❤ I watch Sean Tucker too, he's amazing. I love photography but I only pursue it as a hobby because if I push it as a job, I am afraid I might lose myself in order to have other's attention in order to sell my photography. I just want to explore more and learn more. I'm going to watch your videos and I hope I can also learn from you

    the roots: what is photography and a photograph ? Im photographing one same tree for weeks. My friend choose the tree. It's not an aestethic tree, not isolated, big with full of flaws for a photographer and I like this tree slowly. It's not easy. I have to walk 30 minutes to reach it. My friend gave me a 'poisonned' gift but now it forces me to think and feel about photography.

      Thank you for watching! I am honestly not super qualified at giving any kind of audience building advice. I have a website where I upload new photos every few months, and I try to post on Instagram occasionally, but what I really love is meeting up with local photographers and connecting with fellow artists face-to-face. I found that I've grown more after getting involved in my photography community than it ever did while I was at it alone.

    I started photography about 20 years before you did. A lot of that time I was told the "correct" things to photograph. It has irritated many people that I will not pick a box. I have always done a combo of urban and nature. Tinted with a bit of Urbex.

    Good info Jude. The old mind sure does have a lot of things to deal with. Probably more than one can imagine. Being able to look at ones inner self, in a good way, is pretty awesome. One thing that quickly screws me up is having other people around when I make photos. Seems like I quickly loose my patience and thought process. Take care now and I look forward to your film stuff.👍👍

      Thank you so much! It's a double-edged sword, though, this introspection. It's easy for me to be crippled by it and then create nothing at all for months at a time. I've actually found joining a local photography group on their photo walks around town to be super helpful and refreshing to get me out of a rut and seeing photos where I wouldn't normally have seen them!

    I often find myself in the same place of putting myself in a box. I equally often have to break out of it to grow. But that's just a part of learning and getting more experienced. at 5:37 you need not be too hard on earlier self. Back then you were trying to find your way in a world you have way less knowledge off. Of course, you would like you didn't make those mistakes and still grow, but that's often the way it goes..

I still have lots of great camera gear but I have a feeling it will be a long time till i upgrade any of it. The biggest key for me was knowing what tool I needed in what situation and not over thinking everything. Sometimes I run the ISO on auto, shoot me $10.
