Summary:
This is a terrific document of the group shortly after the 2nd album release. They play the 2nd album in it's entirety as well as most of the first album. It's b&w, but well lit, good audio and every second of it is here. The original lineup (they look so young!) bursting with creativity on their first tour as headliners.
One of the most original and talented party sound bands. Beautiful harmonies with the girls and wicked driving rhythm guitar licks. One of a kinds.
Seriously. Every time I see Cindy, it's like seeing a unicorn. PURE FUKCING MAGIC.
The quality of this recording is SOOO good, and the mix on the guitar and drums is just SOOOO sinister. Damn this shows how live B52's (especially with Ricky in the band) were RIGHT ON THE EDGE of punk. Like, yea, they were "party pop", sorta, but, with such an ominous underbelly. True art.
This particular upload is such a great example of how Ricky played guitar in such a way that it sounded as if he were two players.
+Austin Lucas Any idea how the heck Ricky is playing both the rapid fire lead part while doing the rhythm riff underneath in that intro? Unless it's just my ears playing tricks on me...
+KenshinZZ Your ears hear it well, that's how it is. The guitar's tuned to DADxBB (no string in the G slot) and he played the lead part on the higher two strings while playing the part on the lower strings. It's a bit unorthodox but doable, not as hard as it seems; just uncommonly heard of.
EDIT: And now I see Mad Mike posted about it. Well that's OK, no issues.
that bass player had to hide in the shadows - tricky with such a hot glowing song
Bassist? That was Kate on the keyboard. They didn't have anyone on bass guitar at that time, they did at least as early as 1985 though.
lol noob. kate rules!
Rickys guitar blows me away in this
I blew two brand new six by nine speakers in my car in the 80's listening to this song. Yep it sounds great turned up too. lol
Another proof .. Ricky Wilson making magic on just 4 strings instead of 6. Big Thanks for downloading.
SuperBeefhart It’s DAD-BB
This is B-52's at their best... young, energized and had been playing live for 3 years at this point so they had their musical chops down!!!
I love it when Cindy breaks into her little GoGo Style dance
If there could only be one video on UA-cam, let it be this.
🎶🤣👍🏻💚
Only the good die young..RIP Ricky you legend!
Wilson's guitar was always my favorite with their music. He created many groovy riffs with his simple style.
one of the best versions of hot lava available. make sure to keep these safe.
See the one from 78.
Keep it burnin keep it burnin
just now realizing how badass this band is
Welcome to the party.
Same
That drum beat is killer!!!
Ricky killing it!!
WOW! This is vintage B-52s! Was a junior in high school and thought this band was the coolest post-punk band with their funky words, guitar riffs etc.
I carried their party mix lp everywhere... get so nostalgic watching Ricky Wilson playing the guitar...
Yeah. And Ricky was a pretty fair guitarist. I like his and actually the whole band's work rhythmically.
Woa,volcano 😮
Ricky!
That guitar tone=WOW
This show was epic
I was there two nights in a row...just the best on both nights
Took me 37yrs of living to truly appreciate this band. My goodness, that debut album is one of the coolest things I've ever heard. Guitar in this song is so damn brilliant!! Vocals!!!! All perfection!!
Without words, here only speaks the great talent of this great band
Cindy's vocals!
Ricky Wilson ladies and gentlemen ❤
One of my favorites songs from the first album
Never has lava been so cool, never so colourful a band been so black and white. The B52s worked in mysterious ways.
This took peak creativity on everyone's part!!
I love this band. I love their performances back in the late 70s and early 80s. I wish I had been born in NY by the 60s just to have the chance to see one of these gigs.
What a great song and an even better band!!
Awesome live version. Cindy's sophisticated voice is been burnt in my head for decades...
Ricky Wilson tocando el riff y los solos a la misma vez, el bombo de Strickland, Kate, Cindy y Fred. INSUPERABLES
I danced like this at the club last night. What a reaction I got lol.
This is a masterpiece- so powerful, sexual, and fun.
Damn this is as good as it gets!
Fabulosos B '52 , la guitarra de Rick Wilson inigualable
This song is heavy af. Kate Pierson’s part where she sings “Volcano” is probably heavier than any bullshit coming out nowadays...
I love all of them so much, but Pierson and Ricky are surfing the same asteroid.
@@elizabethgeoghegan5167 I don't know what you mean by that, but it sounds as B-52s as it ever could. "Surfing Asteroids" would have been a great song/album title for them.
I love these dance moves
My god they are so unique in the world of music love them ta bits ×××××from England
Greetings from Oregon. It appears that you truly enjoy the music you wrote. That's a talent in itself. Thanks for all the good times..
Amazing group, RIP Rickey, what a guitar that dude could slang!❤
I remember watching them play at the Manchester Academy about 10 years ago - they were ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL and the atmosphere was electric.. what fantastic show people they all are and I'd love to see them perform again in the UK! Great video and now I need to spend time watching that whole concert that someone has very kindly posted.
Coolest performance of all time.
This is fantastic.
this is amazing.
Ricky (R.I.P.) had that unique Wilco Johnson style of guitar playing (rhythm and solo at the same time). In combination with open tuning it sounds great.
Greetings from Oregon. Seen these cats only 11 times. Hopefully more. Love ya!
I'm so in love when kate throws her arms like that
This is fantastic
Omg I has chills. They da best❤️ Every single one of them is so talented
Love this song.
I saw them on this tour - outstanding 💜💜💜
Love this song
That kick drum work tho
One of my faves by this band, though I could say that about a lot of their songs.
Great performance!
rock and roll hall of fame!
Priceless...but not free.
God, Ricky Wilson was the greatest
Great performance!!!
Far more sophisticated than todays pop music !
DADxBB tuning (no G) on a Mosrite Ventures through a Twin Reverb. This show has one of my favorite tones Ricky got with that setup.
I've played a Mosrite guitar like his through a Fender Hot Rod DeVille. If you use a set of .13s the tone's close or spot on.
+Michael “Mad-Mike” Robedeau Any idea how the heck Ricky is playing both the rapid fire lead part while doing the rhythm riff underneath?
+KenshinZZ The way he does it is by tuning the lower strings to a chord and the upper strings to a pair of open notes in unison - in this case, basically Drop D without the G string and 2 B's instead of a B and high E string. He seems to usually hit the chords on the downstroke and the leads on the up, sometimes he can combine two into one swift stroke. A lot of it is hitting the leads on the off-beat or every other beat on this song.
+Mad-Mike's "Creeping Net" Channel DADxBB is the tuning he used for many early B-52s songs too.
Yep - 6060842 was one of them, I think Hero Worship is another, 52 Girls I think Ricky may be using this tuning and Kate is using E-standard. Give Me Back My Man is another one that uses DADxBB.
Keith Strickland.... The MAGIC man, tappin' on the SKINS like no other!!!! OMG. Ss
Great old stuff. Love the hair and the 80s!
I was at this concert 💯❤️🧨
Los Amoooooooooooo. Besos desde México. Me gusta bailar a GO-GO
Kate Pierson is a Goddess.
Fred! Let em have it!
AWESOMENESS!!!
Man I love Kate
Hard Core... tough kids👊
B52s were a part of my high school partying days. 💣
Peak America right here.
possibly the most under-rated guitarist
The black 'n' white makes it better, somehow? (I love Cindy's left-hand!) lol
@Vetter Burns - You mean Kate's right arm?! (Cindy's playing tambourine here) ;-)
Amazing stuff.
Awesome!
Reminds me of pinback and of Montreal live in Newport
