      I don't think there was ever a more precise, robotic drummer that could just go like that. Peart may have been more technical / layered, but I can't think of a song where Peart just sits there for 3 minutes straight playing with the repetitive precision of a Roland drum machine lol.
      The first time I heard Devo was FOC era stuff, and I thought for sure Whip it was a drum machine. It's not. lol still blows my mind

    I've watched this so many times and still, I can't get over how damn tight the drums are. Just spot on, that rhythm just propels this song. One thing I love about a lot of music from this era is the great drumming. This is a prime example.

    How can ANYONE get sick of this performance? Alan is truly a human metronome, and Bob 1's overdrive on "the cloud" is fierce. I am Devo.

    5 geeks with no auto-tune or backing track laying it down and blowing away the vast majority of modern acts. I was in Eastern Europe this summer and every (and I mean every) bar and business was playing 80's music. Long live the 80's!!! It's crazy how accurate the drummer is for a live performance.

    Seeing them live really imprinted how talented they were as musicians. The entire show felt like it was in a studio. I believe it was 1981.

      I began as a 20 something
      in a city in Central Texas.
      Musta ran my church mother insane, but she never complained. I created music, and now as an African American in
      my 70s, I am still
      grooving to DEVO.

      I think I saw them live 3 or 4 times. I wish I had not done so many drugs back then. I probably would remember more. I do remember every time I really enjoyed the show. 😊

      Back in 1980 when they would played whip it off the same album at the skating rink I always had to get on the floor and skate as fast as I could and hang those curves like my life depended on it great memories!

    In today's 2022 world, everything is so contrived as far as the rhythm and sound and delivery. Devo could make a comeback if they were just starting, because their approach to music was so fresh. Nobody is going to perform on stage like this, and nobody's going to make something different like this today.

    Back in the day before the manufactured pop stars existed and you had to have musical talent. The cream always rose to the top. Great memories, their hats always reminded me of 'Bill and Ben the Flowerpot Men' if you know what I am referring to, then you're old also.

    As a drummer since i was 12. I fell inlove with devo for the marks amazong work on the synth. Didnt hurt beaing able to learn the square like structure of the guitar sheet music .

    IMHO Devo's LIVE performances of Girl U Want and Gates of Steel on Fridays are their BEST ever - stone cold TIGHT - I saw this as a kid when it first aired on ABC, was a huge fan then, still a fan now. We're all DEVO.

    The way both Bob 1 and Gerald are in perfect sync during the guitar solo and nailed in perfect timing is so damn good you can actually see Mark fist bump Gerald at 1:58. This was definitely them at their finest, probably the last time they were full of so much energy talent and youth. And as other's have mention the drums are perfect!

    So good!!! I watched it again at 0.75x speed and it still sounds great at a slightly slower tempo. More to appreciate. ❤️ // Edit: Just remembered that they did slow down the tempo live in later years.

    Intense and sincere. That’s must’ve been nice hearing it loud as f. What gets me is Mark is all show business with the song but when he plays the synth breaks in the chorus he’s not messing. I’m glad I saw them live.
