Was in Decline we just opened up a new movement of strength the Biden Administration and this disgraceful music have been demolished. Thank God long LIVE ROCK + ROLL 🎸🥁
I don't think there was ever a more precise, robotic drummer that could just go like that. Peart may have been more technical / layered, but I can't think of a song where Peart just sits there for 3 minutes straight playing with the repetitive precision of a Roland drum machine lol. The first time I heard Devo was FOC era stuff, and I thought for sure Whip it was a drum machine. It's not. lol still blows my mind
I've watched this so many times and still, I can't get over how damn tight the drums are. Just spot on, that rhythm just propels this song. One thing I love about a lot of music from this era is the great drumming. This is a prime example.
5 geeks with no auto-tune or backing track laying it down and blowing away the vast majority of modern acts. I was in Eastern Europe this summer and every (and I mean every) bar and business was playing 80's music. Long live the 80's!!! It's crazy how accurate the drummer is for a live performance.
Love reading the compliments on Alan Meyers. A phenomenal drummer who made it look easy- it wasn’t!! R.I.P. Alan. P.S. All time Devo classic performed to perfection!
She sings from somewhere you can't see She sits in the top of the greenest tree She sends out an aroma of undefined love It drips on down in a mist from above She's just the girl, she's just the girl The girl you want
I'm still listening too. I began as a 20 something in a city in Central Texas. Musta ran my church mother insane, but she never complained. I created music, and now as an African American in my 70s, I am still grooving to DEVO. ( future Hall of Famers )
I think I saw them live 3 or 4 times. I wish I had not done so many drugs back then. I probably would remember more. I do remember every time I really enjoyed the show. 😊
Back in 1980 when they would played whip it off the same album at the skating rink I always had to get on the floor and skate as fast as I could and hang those curves like my life depended on it great memories!
In today's 2022 world, everything is so contrived as far as the rhythm and sound and delivery. Devo could make a comeback if they were just starting, because their approach to music was so fresh. Nobody is going to perform on stage like this, and nobody's going to make something different like this today.
Back in the day before the manufactured pop stars existed and you had to have musical talent. The cream always rose to the top. Great memories, their hats always reminded me of 'Bill and Ben the Flowerpot Men' if you know what I am referring to, then you're old also.
As a drummer since i was 12. I fell inlove with devo for the marks amazong work on the synth. Didnt hurt beaing able to learn the square like structure of the guitar sheet music .
I watch this video, first, because Devo is the greatest performance band of European descent of all-time, and just to see Bob II's head in the groove. You can't teach it.
While all the folks my age were still playing the Allman Brothers and The Band and all that other classic rock stuff I’m so happy I continued to evolve with The music world . Devo , B-52’s and oh so many others saved me from a life of listening to classic rock . ICK
IMHO Devo's LIVE performances of Girl U Want and Gates of Steel on Fridays are their BEST ever - stone cold TIGHT - I saw this as a kid when it first aired on ABC, was a huge fan then, still a fan now. We're all DEVO.
The way both Bob 1 and Gerald are in perfect sync during the guitar solo and nailed in perfect timing is so damn good you can actually see Mark fist bump Gerald at 1:58. This was definitely them at their finest, probably the last time they were full of so much energy talent and youth. And as other's have mention the drums are perfect!
I didn't see that fist bump until you pointed it out. And dude on the upstage synth didn't even need to stop his badass dance moves. In all seriousness, this is an amazing video.
So good!!! I watched it again at 0.75x speed and it still sounds great at a slightly slower tempo. More to appreciate. ❤️ // Edit: Just remembered that they did slow down the tempo live in later years.
Intense and sincere. That’s must’ve been nice hearing it loud as f. What gets me is Mark is all show business with the song but when he plays the synth breaks in the chorus he’s not messing. I’m glad I saw them live.
America might be on the decline, but at least you have Devo to provide the tunes. Come on America, you can get back to this level of greatness
Was in Decline we just opened up a new movement of strength the Biden Administration and this disgraceful music have been demolished. Thank God long LIVE ROCK + ROLL 🎸🥁
Lol we're not coming back
Devo stands for De evolution
Good Lord, that was Fantastic !
Hell yeah! Make no mistake!
You swear it's a drum machine but no it's human. Incredible drummer in DEVO
Yep, these guy were tight.

Fact's
The Human Metronome Alan Myers RIP
Alan was the man!
I've watched this so many times and still, I can't get over how damn tight the drums are. Just spot on, that rhythm just propels this song. One thing I love about a lot of music from this era is the great drumming. This is a prime example.
They called the drummer a human metronome.
Oh that Alan!
To this day I say Allen is one of the most underrated drummers ever
@@tonda9915 yes he is VERY underrated!🥔
This band was super tight live-amazing!
Can we take a second and appreciate how tight that drummer is!
When NASA needs to reset their clocks they give him a call
I listened to hundreds of bands in the late 70s and 2 stick out today at my age of 58... B-52s and DEVO!
You forgot SPLIT ENZ and THE CARS!
I think Mi sex & Puesdo Echo liked them
True!!!!!!!!
Yep......
Blondie's, Clem Burke!
Making all of us lab nerds proud with those glasses, Mark!
How can ANYONE get sick of this performance? Alan is truly a human metronome, and Bob 1's overdrive on "the cloud" is fierce. I am Devo.
We're all are DEVO ☠️💣☠️
Devo Mega
Selin Moije Schule Mathe Deutsch?
Good Answer
Make America Devo Again!
Awesome. Any band that can reproduce live, the album quality sound, is aces in my book 👍🏻😀
One of the best punk rock guitar riffs ever.
So seamless yet so robotic and calculated
If you've never heard of the band crack cloud, I think you'd probably dig their first album. Check out drab measure if you feel like it.
The punk covers of Gates of Steel are epic! A little more up-tempo
Indeed! All time Devo classic tune!
This isnt punk rock.
As we humans continue to devolve, it becomes clearer that Devo was genius.
They should by rights be hailed as prophets
yep... these cats were dead on................................................... now?! Ignorance rules............... :(
1:45 - No one wails on the guitar like Bob #1. One of the greatest.
This band was so ahead of it's time.
They stil are ☠️💣☠️
Because....THEYRE FROM THE FUTURE! :D
@@Jacksmusicshack ☠️💣☠️
The human metronome in action
man, he's so good
I'm a huge drumming fan, and he's sick as hell. Very impressive! The whole band plays tight as hell.
Who needs a drum machine when you are the drum machine.
Absolutely! This and Gates of Steel from a performance on Fridays are outstanding. So tight.
I keep coming back to this version because of that high hat
RIP Bob 2 and Alan you are sorely missed.
I watched this on the night it was 1st broadcast, extremely high on the LSD and believing that The Devo was talking to me personally. Good Times 😂
Dude that's effin hilarious. I too have had experiences like that. I hope you are well today.
They were.
@@mitchyoung93 Really. That's how good art comes across.
Look up their collab with Neil Young. It’s a fvcking trip. On LSD? Good lord😂😂😂
Haha I had the tape barely a teen lol
The timing of the riff and the drums still seems so hard to fathom after all these years. Pure brilliance.
Love reading the compliments on Alan Meyers. A phenomenal drummer who made it look easy- it wasn’t!!
R.I.P. Alan.
P.S. All time Devo classic performed to perfection!
It sounds exactly like the recording , im impressed
She sings from somewhere you can't see
She sits in the top of the greenest tree
She sends out an aroma of undefined love
It drips on down in a mist from above
She's just the girl, she's just the girl
The girl you want
I ordered freedom of choice and are we not men? On Columbia House for a penny right after I saw this!!
And now you're gonna have records showing up in your mailbox every week, with no way to stop it, for the rest of your life.😅
one of the rare bands to have the drummer be the best musician
They’re all phenomenal!
the drummer Allen is literally a metronome - his meter in so precise you'd swear its a drum machine.
Fridays was a great show and this song is perfect.
Devo, Kraftwerk, Art of Noise & Talking Heads are just a few of my favorite bands from that New Wave Era..great times for a 12 year old kid
Seeing them live really imprinted how talented they were as musicians. The entire show felt like it was in a studio. I believe it was 1981.
Title of the video LITERALLY says 1980
@@kenm2709 I think they were referring to when they, personally, saw them live.
This song is nerdy badass distilled
Still good 44 years later....
I'm still listening to devo from the 80's to 2024🎸🎶🎵🎹🥁📻😎✌️👍awesome video thanks for sharing 👍 ✌️
I'm still listening too.

in a city in Central Texas.
Musta ran my church mother insane, but she never complained. I created music, and now as an African American in

One of my few regrets is never going to see them live. I don’t know why I never did. I had all of their records too. What a whiff by me.
I think I saw them live 3 or 4 times. I wish I had not done so many drugs back then. I probably would remember more. I do remember every time I really enjoyed the show. 😊
Devo, I really loved their keyboards, it's why I still play
Most excellent showmanship
That guitar player has some sick moves.
Excellent performance. Maybe perfect.
This performance was the first time I ever heard DEVO.
ARE WE NOT MEN?!?
Back in 1980 when they would played whip it off the same album at the skating rink I always had to get on the floor and skate as fast as I could and hang those curves like my life depended on it great memories!
WE ARE DEVO!
Damn! I saw this when it came out! I was a HUGE Fridays fan! DEVO Rulz!!!

In one word...GENIUS!!!
Absolutely brilliant 2023
Got this on on vinyl from way back then... my fav!
So polished, so tight. Fkn impressive
I absolutely did not appreciate them as I should have.
A really great band doing brilliant music.
Utter genius
I used to have a pair of trousers like those. They cost a fortune. Wish I'd kept them.

Revolutionary at the time..

Love DEVO!!
This is the Best performance of the song, thank you so much for posting such a high quality recording! You’ve made my day
Agree 100%. They were absolutely bloody brilliant on that show.
The second set was insane as well on the same night, uncontrollable urge from their first album
Drums are Sharp and Tight everybody’s excellent an AWESOME Band.
Wore out the Album Freedom of Choice🇦🇺
Saw them twice back in the day. Very tight group.
Greatest band ever. EVER.

Great song
Such a simple guitar lick made such a great song.

Nice to know that there were at one time good people from Ohio
If that isnt one of the best live clips ever...im not here.
That blue guitar....

Great vid I use to what the Devo Fridays vid way back on YT and it was really grainy and poor but this is great quality thanks!

Freedom of choice one of the first albums on CD.
this is how popular music will sound 100 years from now and DEVO will be respected on a par with the Beatles.
