Once again You have given me the know-how and confidence to work on one of my motors. Between my 60, 70s and 25s, you have been a life saver more than once. Fantastic video. I just got done doing it and everything worked out perfectly. The parts to do this can get crazy expensive. I purchased a complete parts motor and made the conversion with it. The only thing I did different was installed the carb bowl that has the provision for the primer solenoid. Thank you Brandon.

18:18 Thank you for your comment on how to get around without the ring. I want to retrofit a charge coil on my 1994 15hp Evinrude and hesitated until now.
Brandon, you are by far my favorite Utuber and do an awesome job explaining working on these old Johnson/evinrude..Ive have a 4 hp had a 6hp and 9.9hp..Now I have a 25 hp that Im trying to convert the wiring from brown 76 plug to a red plug... changing waterpump EVERY bolt snapped off,,every bolt you can think of...did you know that oxy/acetylene,,will melt the aluminum before bolt,,haha..fml. anyway sir Im learning allot from your videos, not sure yet how to wire a kill switch on a 76 points motor to a red plug electronic set,,may just run kill to choke actuator...anyway,, next project is try and find and install a electric lift on my next motor a 60 hp 80s evinrude
Thats easy! ...Well, not that easy.... Out of the red plug is a black wire, and a black wire with yellow stripe. Those who wires need to be connected to the 2 black wires going to the points on the ignition plate (under the flywheel) Now, the black wire is a ground wire, it cannot be connected anywhere else in order for this to work. I mention that because often times that black wire gets grounded. Sometimes it'll goto the stater solenoid, then branch off to the block, or it'll goto the block, then branch off to the solenoid somehow. That cannot happen. Out of the red plug, and straight to the kill circuit wires. It is also grounded inside the controller. The controller will have to be opened and the ground strap/bolt removed and taped off. Making sure the ground only goes to the ground terminal on the switch. This will eliminate the use of the ground signal out of the tachometer plug, buy you cant use that with a points engine anyway, so no real loss there. A new gearcase is available, and decently affordable; 038969 - $120ish from marineengine.com
What does the tan wire on power pack do?The two tans going thru the harness are spliced together to have one going to connector so the temp switch and the power pack tans are one in the same but different connections all resulting going to same point. Explanation would’ve great.
Tan wire is your temperature wire. Sensor in the head grounds out when it gets hot. This ground signal, is sent to the powerpack to let it know that it is overheating and go into SLOW mode, trying to prevent full engine failure. It can operate without the engine harness, the connector ends can be arranged if needed to completely bypass the engine harness, should the engine be a tiller controlled; thus not having a red plug harness. The reason it enters the harness is to send the overheat signal to the controller/dash to sound its warning horn (should the engine be overheating)
Awesome explanation. Now if you could tell me why someone would grind down the starter bracket where the timing stopper screw goes through to get more adjustment to achieve proper timing??I can’t find any reason for this, but timing is not possible without this mod.
