A nitpick, but the deciscion for Japan to not have a military post-WW2 is not universally agreed to have come from the US. Both Japanese PM Kijūrō Shidehara and Douglas MacArthur stated that Shidehara was the person to suggest it. Obviously there is no way to prove this one way or another, but there is a major difference between the narrative "America forced Japan to disarm" compared to "Japan willingly chose to disarm"

15:30 US and Japan post ww2 worked together for standing up a country that the US wanted. And the Japanese protested that the US military stationed there grew to enormous size which was the real US intentions. sadly this playbook hasn't changed a bit even today.

Harry Truman's Marshall Plan? Truman only signed the Economic Recovery Act of 1948. It's literally named The MARSHALL Plan. George Marshall suggested and campaigned for it since late 1946. The man was prolifically efficient and effective. I'd wager WWII would have been years longer if not for him.

I really wonder what the average Japanese person thought of America at that time? We destroyed their country in a pretty brutal way, but then we got rid of their government that forced them into war and was very brutal to the average person

Good question. I do know that the Japanese education paints a whole different narrative to the ww2 era. I'm interested in the same.
Also, my personal theory is that when one strong person stands up to a bully, and beat the hell out of him, the bully is not only shown for what he is, but the strong also helps him up, then he becomes a US territory for good bad and the ugly.

Until you read about the absolute brutality and sadism that the imperial Japan imposed on the whole region prior. The average Japanese probably had their eyes opened after the war since the government had lied to them the entire time. They came to like McArthur and realized America wasn't quite what they had been taught.

  • @hamaljay

I suggest you do more research into Japan's Constitution. America wanted Japan to have a military they wanted Japan to be the vanguard against the Communist insurrection in Asia. Now while MacArthur had a large say over the Constitution and it was written by some Americans Japanese people participated in the drafting of the Constitution and most notably in the provision of no longer having a standing army. MacArthur tried to argue against this again because he wanted the fearless Japanese army as a vanguard, but in the end the current Japanese government at the time felt that after what their military had done they did not want to be responsible for that again.
In short America didn't want Japan to be peaceful America wanted to use Japan and its ruthless army but the Japanese people were done with war especially after seeing what their army had done.

The reason why Japan was able to climb out of it so easily is the fact that Japan was a United nation state that wasn't divided amongst tribal or clan lines who don't like each other and don't trust each other. The people of Japan had created a culture where they had seen themselves as part of a greater hole of the Japanese people just like in all modern functioning nation states.
And I hope you're not acting like the nukes did all the damage, everybody obsesses over those but the fact is 10 times as many people were killed in Japan by conventional bombing and fire bombing and way more damage to infrastructure and industry was done by that in the atomic bombs. The whole reason the Allies drop that was because they literally wouldn't give up even after all that. It cheapens the deaths of the 75 million people that died during the war when you just focus on the deaths of those two things which wasn't any less destructive or ethical than anything else that

I had to stop this video after the statement that the constitution was "handed down" to the Japanese people from the Americans. This is an overly simplistic and ultimately misleading representation that ignores the role that Japanese officials and people played in crafting the constitution. Also positing MacArthur as the "American emperor" is more for views, likes and subscriptions than for an accurate or compelling retelling of history.

It’s really not though. From things as big as not having a standing armed forces(which recently started to change under Abe before his assassination) to things as small as growing hemp and marijuana(which were not illegal before the war) was mandated by the United States. They had complete control on how Japan was going into the future. Even today with about 8 military bases throughout Japan you could still say the U.S. has significant pull on the Japanese homeland.

Excuse me. US has never built anything in Japan, but bases, and previously has destroyed the country at last with the atomic nukes over Hiroshima & Nagasaki. The japanese economy has had improved enormously after that defeat in WW2 just because the hard work by japanese people.
And US with the 1985 Plaza Accord destroyed that fulgor and put the economy in decline. The so called lost decade is well known, and the culprit has a name, US, given that Japan was obliged to agree as a protectorate.
So the video is false propaganda, trying to rewright the history.

American called the Japanese "imperialist" while occupying Philippines for 40 years. And even there, the Philippines had almost thrown out the Spanish, but the Americans forced the Spanish empire to surrender to US. The locals rejected the US rule which led to war of occupation killing 1 million of the 8 million total population.
Ambassador Hull warned the Japanese to leave China or face a war with US. All the while when the Dutch, British, French, Portuguese had colonies in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Sir Lanka, etc for MORE THAN 100-200 years! Is this what you call "irony"?
Coming to this video, the Americans had no moral rights to occupy some place in the Asian war of imperialism in the first place. Occupying Japan and raping its women still continued till the end of occupation. Later on, the Americans straight up censored any party which didn't conform to its will. Talk about "free will".
The war criminal politician itself doesn't matter. His policy of strategic autonomy was always justified and this was always the main issue in the local politics of those times. Instead this youtuber uses his history to justify the Japanese encapsulation and just paints him a second Tojo or something. Would US give up its arms if a hypothetical country nuclear bombs its soil and now promises that it will always defend them militarily?
Strategic autonomy(including a strong military) is the most important trait of an independent sovereign nation. Nothing wrong in claiming that, including for Japan.
As for the economics part, read about the Breton woods and how US rigged the IMF and world bank in the first place. Sending money for reconstruction was just a facing-saving policy after causing so much destruction. And obviously US companies made huge profits competing with a war-torn country. The Japanese post-war revival was achieved by the Japanese itself. The author has some guts spinning the story, when even till 70s-80s the Americans though of Japanese as some small monkeys or something.
