Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

can't believe it's their only interaction in the series
It makes sense. Gus would never want to be seen in any spectrum with a criminal lawyer. Best have a guy like mike be the connection between the 2
In both series.
What a small world, Gus could have seen Saul’s commercial and said Wow, I need that at the DEA question meeting
@@dannycalypse there is better call saul 2?
@@ivanp7 I meant Breaking Bad, obviously.
Crazy the fact that two of the most important and successful characters in the series only meet once.
I wanna bet in, Gus free time during the events of Breaking Bad he saw, Sauls commercial and I bet in his mind he said "Hey I recognize that guy!".
It actually makes sense because the entirety of BCS is composed of Saul's story and Gus' story separately before Breaking Bad and they never coincide directly in any events that follow. It's kind of like 2 different timelines that reach a single climax with Lalo in BCS and Walter White in BB
saul aint that successful
@@Pretzel829Saul is insanely successful right up until everything goes sideways
He did has Mick to keep eye on him.
are you telling me that a watch just happens to fall off like that? no! he orchestrated it! jimmy!
I’m not crazy
He defecated through a sunroof!!!!!!!
But not our Jimmy! Couldn't be precious Jimmy!!!
Vravo bince!
And he gets a tasty meal from the chicken man? What a sick joke!
“May I clean this for you? We have alcohol wipes.”

Watch out with such jokes!
Definitely not alcohol would melt off the fake gold plate
What a sick joke

Love how they highlight how well Gus can hide in plain sight by showing him in the background and not focusing on him
I read this comment only to look up at the video at 1:54 to get jump scared by a Gus sighting.
Just like his first scene in breaking bad
Was just about to comment this, what a great shot
And this the first and only time they interact in the entire BB universe
That’s actually insane
season 4 episode 3
what a really nice manager. you don't see people with that kind of integrity.
I agree! I hope he isn't a drug lord!
Ur gonna laugh at this
I hope his franchise expands in the future what a nice person
He may be an excellent manager, but that's just a disguise for his ruthless drug business.
@@31redorange08 Are you serious? He look like a respectable and humble owner of a chicken restaurant, you're tripping.
I wonder if Saul thought about throwing the watch on the spot, or was it default behavior for being caught searching a dumpster
My guess is intuition. Saul shows how good of a problem solver he is in the series especially under pressure. I mean Tuco had a gun to his head and in a matter of minutes he saved his life and the two skateboard scammers.
he didnt need to do the watch shtick, but its stronger than his fallback of "i accidentally dropped the red basket in there too"
He didn't think about it on the spot. He figured out where the exit was before needing it.
@@AlbertLivingstoneI'm pretty sure he just came up with the idea on the spot. Otherwise he'd have loosened it so he only have to drop it in the bin when he is caught, but here you can see he had to use his other hand to take the watch off.
I don't know how they managed to make a scene with Saul just casually being an average fast good customer interesting for 10 minutes, but yet, I was so invested.
5 minutes
@@codiefitz3876MEGA LOL
good actors and more importantly, good writing.. you dont see that not even in 20 years from now.
do you mean like this is before we all knew he saul was and this was the first time as us the audience is being introduced to him ? so we saw him just as a regular customer in the scene ?
Gus's pale yellow shirt may be the only color not in Saul's wardrobe.
Nah Saul’s got tons of yellow and can be seen in yellow in multiple BB episodes.
The color coding in the series is crazy on point. Yellow was pretty much always used to indicate the drug trade. Clothes or lighting (or Mexico) , it was super thematic.
@@edwardcatt2399but not pale yellow
@@robbybevard8034 Wasn't Nacho's dad's truck yellow? He's about as anti drug trade as they get
Gus definitely knows. When he asks if there's anything else he could help with, the tone was I know that you're up to something
"Don't worry, if it's in here I'll find it"
If you bothered to actually dump your watch to keep up this obvious ruse, at least you got that part right and I'll be forced to continue to play along. Don't think I didn't notice that you were acting suspicious earlier when you didn't know I was watching you and that you took about a second longer than most people would to get your head out of a literal trash can when finally confronted. You may be a friend of the cartel but I'm a friend of Langley and it almost makes me miss the days when troublemakers were competent, because at least then it was a challenge.
Yeah he knew. After this scene it shows him looking up with a bit of an “aha” kind of look
Captain Obvious over here 😂 the scene is clearly showing Gus “making” Jimmy and signals off camera to the bag guy to leave as he’s being watched. Then Gus is outside sweeping as he’s clearly made Mike in the car talking to Jimmy.
Better Call Saul is supposed to be a spin-off, but when you get down to it Breaking Bad is actually Saul's spin-off. Walter's is just one story in The Tales of Slippin' Jimmy.
yup jimmy was in the game long before walter was . hence at the end of bcs walter calls saul to dissapear and make new alias from the vacum guy he got that hookup from saul . jimmy was indeed the man
And I'm pretty sure for the last time tbh
True, Jimmy prefered Chinesse fast food
@@gigabilly1160LOL
Gus Fring is one of the best villains ever, Giancarlo Esposito really owned that role
They need to do a spin off With Gus staring out in Chili all the way to Better Call Saul

I know that these are all corrupt people and all, but it did seem like life was peaceful before Walt came in.
walt was a domestic terrorist after all lol
Jimmy assaulted his brother, Mike killed people, Gus had so many people killed and lives destroyed before walt came in
Jimmy is just a little guy 🥺
Lalo Salamanca??? Dude was a menace…even had Gus shook for a little bit there
@@OldCouchesFring and The Cartel had been in business for decades bf a terminally ill high school chemistry teacher came in and blew everything up in less than 2 years.
That soda dispenser is nostalgic now. They use to he everywhere now you hardly see that design anymore
They're still around, just not as common as they used to be.
instead now we have the touch screen macines that barely work since the screen is always sticky and filthy because nobody cleans it
Scenes like this make me wish the “I know a guy who knows a guy” line from Breaking Bad didn’t exist. I would’ve loved to have seen how these characters played off of each other had Saul been aware of Gus’s true identity.
It's not simply that one line. They obviously don't really know each other in BB
@@sonoftheway3528it is that one line tho, its like how lalo and nacho had to be characters from one line
@@sonoftheway3528 Gus sure as hell knows who Jimmy is beyond his Saul Goodman persona. Saul, however, had no idea who Gus actually was until like S3 of BB.
@@carlosmarquez2725 Sure, although I don't think anything in BB indicates that.
@@sonoftheway3528 In Breaking Bad 2x11 when Walt asks about Gus's name, Saul says that he doesn't know. He continues to not know his name until season 4, because he picked it up from Walt and Jesse. In the flashback in 6x11 of Better Call Saul, Saul refers to Gus as "He who shall not be named", indicating he doesn't know his name. The flashback occurs during 2x8, before 2x11.
It’s actually hilarious how bad Saul is at spying
Saultuh, put your watch away Saultuh, I'm not gonna clean your watch for you Saultuh.
wrong guy
Lmao
That was too smooth even for Saul. No one would have thought that out that quick to drop off your watch in that situation!!!
I like how this parallels how Walt first sees Gus in BB. So that whether you watch BB or BCS first, the first time you see Gus he seems like just some unimportant dud that works at LPH.
I’ve seen this scene like 5 times now and I think I finally figured out what happened. The guy is supposed to sit there and eat until Gus grabs the package or gives some other kind of signal. Gus probably noticed Saul with his eyes fully locked on him and called off the drop by just ignoring him and continuing on, which signals that the drop is at risk
Also it may only be one interaction but I think it's a perfect one between Gus and Saul. Saul having no idea just how significant he is (which never changes even by Breaking Bad) and Gus, who knows exactly what Saul is up to.
" it's been in worse places." Maybe this is a reference to butch's dad Golden watch from pulp fiction lol
This is the moment where Saul’s stealth became 0
Met Giancarlo in 2021. Great guy with hilarious stories. He will also slip into Gus Fring mode right in front of you.
He was telling me a story about his early acting years and then immediately shifts his face and tone to say "i dont think we are alike at all Mr. White. You are not a cautious man at all" right in front of me. Needless to say i was pretty in shock that he did a line from season 2 while holding eye contact.
When Marco dies he is near a bin when Gus meets Jimmy he is near a bin when Jimmy gets arrested he is near a bin
bravo
bravo bin
You've bin there n bought the t shirt
Always has Bin
Are you talking about Marco Salamanca?
Saul to Mike: Couldn't figure out what a man with a knapsack was up to but I was fortunate to meet a nicest gentleman in the town. You should meet him someday.
This scene confirmed beyond all doubt that you are supposed to watch Breaking Bad first
Nah. Both shows make a point to not reveal right off that Gus is a drug dealer. His first introduction in both is a nice polite, unimportant, restaurant owner for most of the episode both times, and he's not revealed to be what he is until the end of the episode. They pulled the same trick twice just in case you saw BCS first.
@@robbybevard8034 the way he is revealed in this definitely assumes you know the character already.
I hate fans who say you can watch BCS first. You're just ruining the experience.
@@azyy1248 You can absolutely watch BCS first. It might even be *better* that way, because you no longer go "I know this character is fine because they're alive in the future." or "I know this character is doomed because they're NOT there in the future."
Also Walt entering things is a more obvious disruption and you better know the characters he's dealing with. You the audience are better informed than he is. And the first time Mike shows up instead of being a random guy, oh crap, it's Mike!
The one caveat is obviously the last handful of Saul episodes (the all black and white ones) really need to be after BB. But with notice up-front you can avoid that and save them for after.
Plus, Kim going missing that ENTIRE TIME would make it all the more impactful when she does return. Just because YOUR experience was BB first then BCS doesn't mean that's the only way to do it now. They did a good enough job on the prequel it really does work either way.
@@robbybevard8034 the slow pace of BCS would put a lot of people off if they started there, once they watch BB, they would have the thirst for BCS
The reason saul denied to clean the watch with alcohol wipes by gus was a great move ,as if he would have given it to gus he would have found out that the watch band was not broken in the first place
I wish they had another interaction before BB. Like Saul stops by to eat or order food home then Gus kindly talks to him again.
Gus would never. Saul would do as much as he could to stay away from pollos after the lalo situation and Gus would never publicly associate with the sleazy criminal lawyer
Jimmy knows he's being watched somehow.
And so does Gus it’s interesting looking back many years later and still picking up cues I didn’t pay attention to before. Gus takes a few moments to stare and pause at Jimmy when he cleans up behind him just before he continues sweeping. Also Gus likely either tapped or quietly told the guy to leave as soon he noticed Jimmy staring him down at the table. And when Jimmy leaves later Gus’s mannerisms change after he seems to recall hearing the noise of Jimmy’s “crappy” car lol. This show really doesn’t get the credit it deserves that Breaking Bad did.
@@princebpolar8429 I think the sweeping might have been a cue for the guy to leave.
Gus was the one sweeping and he whispered it to him as he walked by.
Gus played it so smoothly and professionally, as always!
Woahh woah are we actually getting a los pollos harmanos scenes big compilation to watch while eating kfc??
Yk what i can just make a playlist lmao
"He talked him out of it?"
That smile on Gus tells you he knew what he was looking for. If there was a way the cartel communicate or leave messages he was looking for that.
Wish I still had this series to watch, so enjoyable
I remember immediately pointing at the yellow shirt the first time I watched ahaha! Love this scene! I can't remember if Jimmy ever finds out that he indeed meet here the man behind the operation he helps later as Saul.
I mean he probably does right? Because he knows it’s the guy behind los pollos hermanos (at least he does when everyone learns about it) but unsure if he even knows when he’s operating as saul that los pollos hermanos is the cover for the operation?
@@thatelise Well, we know he doesn't know who Gus is in the season 2 of Breaking Bad, but between this and season 4 he does learn his name via Walt/Jesse

saul interacting with gus was so random and unexpected, i love it
Saul is too used to that vending machine paper cup flavoured brew. Of course that is not up to Pollos standards, Gus must import that quality Belize bean
Cringe pfp
I LOVE the scene ❤

It’s not the first time they meet. It’s the ONLY tome they meet
Saul was that guy in high school who grew up in the upper middle class with a big White House and tire swing in front yard but hung out with the class clowns and drug dealers but still always maintained his families respectable image due to respect for his parents who raised him with love
It was their first and only meeting in the entire series, crazy cause they are both important characters and only have met once.
I like to imagine Gus being utterly disgusted when Saul said the watch has been in worse places and couldn't wait to hand it back
I love this scene❤
Gus must be proud of his acting.
Watching Breaking Bad after watching Better Call Saul is such a treat.
I love the parallel the way gus and jimmy met vs the first time walt and gus met. It was the same way with gus cleaning in the background. Nice touch.
1:20 coffee is not up to pollo’s standards
Gus casually appearing in the background is so genius, the first time I had to rewind It back to see if I had caught that right
And also for the last time

Love Gus with his can I help you 😅
This fast food resto is scarier than many modern horror movies
I see now. They meet for the first time so that they can fall in love with each other, I would say Bravo Vince but Gus fell in love with Mike instead.
I remember that I jumped out of my chair the first time I saw this.
The first time we ever see Gus, he’s in a short scene where he asks Walt and Jesse if the food is good and we just assume he’s a random background character until the end of the episode. Here, we know for a fact that it’s Gus and even the way it’s shot, like it’s almost like you don’t know what you’re looking at because all you see is a man cleaning the floor and people eating. Like it looks so normal but die hard BB fans are like that one Leo Dicaprio meme where he’s pointing at the tv
The best part about doing a stakeout at Los Pollos Hermanos is that you get a great fried chicken meal.
Gus: Can I help with anything else?
Jimmy: why aren’t there any brothers on the wall?
Kind of makes me want a show that focuses solely on Gus just being a good manager lmao
I always thought Gus didn't collect his stuff because he was aware of Jimmy, I totally missed that he took it from the bag with the broom and dustpan while pretending to clean!
Walt should have hired Saul for the wrongful termination suite and copyright claim against the company he founded. He could've avoided this whole mess. Smh
