  • Is it true that every big streamer just got "lucky"? Or did large creators work harder than small creators? Are there other reasons someone might grow? And how much luck really exists in Streaming and content creation?

    How To Grow On Twitch?
If you want to grow your Twitch stream, it is important to be critical. Being critical isn’t a bad thing, people say, “Oh don’t be so critical of yourself!”.
But there are a lot of things you can control and improve, such as your visuals, audio, and most importantly your content that you’re creating. Watch back your VoD and be honest with yourself, is it up to scratch. Does your mic sound good? Are you engaging? Is it easy to watch and enjoy or is there something that is off-putting? Be honest, push yourself to grow, and become a better entertainer!
Because at the end of the day, the only way you are going to grow your stream is by growing yourself and being critical in a positive way.

What Bitrate And Settings Should I Use For Streaming?
The easiest way to understand bitrate is by calling what it actually is, your upload speed to the Twitch servers.
Now you’ll need a higher bitrate depending on how high quality you want your stream to be, this means 1080p 60 frames per second will need a bitrate of 6000, which roughly equals 6megabits upload speed on your end being taken up
By lowering your resolution and framerate, you can make it a lot easier to stream, for example, if you set your base canvas size to 1920x1080, but change your output to 1280x720 otherwise known as 720p you drop down to only needing a bitrate of 4500 or 4.5megabits.
If you still want 1080, you can even just lower your framerate from 60fps to 30fps and then adjust to 4500bitrate.
For more information visit this Bitrate graph: stream.twitch.tv/

Weird video today, hey? I guess I just wanted to do a few things, show how consistency is always more important than Luck, discuss how blaming luck doesn't help, while I also admit that luck plays a big part but not the way people think, and hopefully encourage you guys to consider if you're doing enough to "increase your own luck". Hope you're having a lovely day :)

Honestly, I don't think this is a different video. I feel like it gets the point across and gives great "golden nuggets" to those looking to grow and possibly have a career in the industry. All your videos give that same vibe :) heck, I'm part of the side that hears what you say and want to improve in my live streams but just have a hard time implementing time management between life, spouse, children and content creation. Keep it up and know that your videos inspire us to want to do our best!

Luck might play a minor role, but your chance to get "lucky" exponentially increases with the amount of grind and effort you put in.

    • @Marqan

That sounds good, but realistically you start from extremely low chance for success to begin with.
Your exponentials won't worth much if you're directly competing with 100'000 people (afaik twitch has 1M active streamers daily).
Assuming 1 out of 100 streamers make it big, who put in relatively the same effort (which I think is still an optimistic chance), then luck plays the biggest role still. I could say 1 out of 5, if you want to be unrealistically positive about it, and that's still an 80% chance of failure.
And that's not to say being a content creator on Twitch is easy. But having to put a lot of effort into it, AND then still having to depend mostly on luck just makes it worse.
You worked hard on it for a year and your chances EXPONENTIALLY grew from 0.0001% to 1%. Imagine taking a job that has 1 year unpaid internship, and then you still only have 1% chance of making a living wage after. Even 20% would be ridiculous.
Not mention there are many channels with thousands of viewers that are unbelievably low effort. It's literally just a guy staring at the screen with basic, deadpan, uninteresting and infrequent commentary, playing a casual game, but somehow still gets thousands of viewers. They are not even doing what is considered bare minimum for a new streamer to have a chance. Meanwhile for the same game there are 100 channels with less than 10 viewers, being objectively a better stream since they can interact with their viewers, and they do at least some of the things that "twitch tutorial" videos tell you.
It's not even like most of these videos talk about bieng an actual "Twitch streamer". The basic requirement seems to be that you're a multi-platform content creator, who produces decent value on at least 3 sites, in 3 different forms, those being let's say streaming, shorts and one social media.
I think people are being seriously gaslighted about this, which really bothers me.

I think you are 100% correct in this. People think making videos is as easy as sitting and playing games. It's not. You need to put in a LOT of work and channels like yours try to break it down for them and people who don't really get it try one part of your advice and then get mad. I would know. I was that person, without the mad part. I used to think I knew what needed to be done. "Just be funny and have good equipment" and that got me nowhere. Lately, I've taken time to actually learn some things as I am editing for my favorite streamer now as well as planning to start a brand new channel of my own. I now understand that it's not about luck, it's about knowing what you are doing. There's so little original ideas you can have for content nowadays, so you have to get creative. You are likely doing something that's already been done, but you can still try to do it better. The goal is, like you said, always improving on yourself

A little bit outside of videomaking, Magic The gathering is a game that by the sheer radomness, if you win more than 50% of your matches you would be a pro player. So the Pro players use the most consistent decks and plays so the luck variable is almost always not the most important variable, but since every deck and play is optimized, still a lot of plays are decided on luck. On youtube, the paralel is quite clear that for luck to matter, you have to have consistent quality over the competition.

I think I've been lucky to have had your videos recommended in my searches for advice/information.
It's helped me to learn so much and grow. I didn't know anything about setting up peripherals, streaming, discord or managing various socials. I don't do much in the way of editing visuals but I've followed pretty much all the rest of your advice and applied them where relevant.
It's true some stuff has to be tweaked to each person's type of content/style but it's helping not just me but the other streamers and members of my community who've found and watched me grow and improve.
I could do more and grow faster but I'm happy with the rate everything is moving at while I'm still so new to everything and learning.
Thank you for making videos ❤ seriously, thank you

I've learned so much about streaming and content creation from watching your videos, including this one. Thank you so much!
I have some questions though: I have a bunch of ideas of videos I want to make, all related to a particular game I play (FFXIV). Much of it is information and guides, but some of it is musical covers; none of it is because it's trending or necessarily current, so I realise that a lot of what is going to get people staying will be the quality of the information and the quality of the visuals/editing once they have reached someone who clicks. Are there some editing techniques and such I should priorities learning about to help catch my audience's attention without videos feeling gaudy/over-edited? How much of my video can be a talking head without being categorically disinteresting? How do you work out what B-Roll to use and where to use it?
For reference, I have used Divinci Resolve in my experimentations, and I am very aware that my UA-cam channel has nothing to show. Working out the visual aspects has proven something of a blockade for me, and I want to find some way to overcome it.
    Thank you in advance!

Great video. Being fully honest, I began on Twitch and I got my affiliate. It felt so good, but I began streaming on an xbox, it was hard to step up my game because I was an student, play tournaments etc.... I learn from this channel but I just applied general tips like being interactive, look chat, or how to feel comfortable on camera. The other side is my own craft. If I am not original I would never reach the place I want to be. It was a luck factor but mostly depends of the creator. I bough a PC this year and is on mainteaiance but because I want to do this.

I heard that luck is "when preparation meets opportunity." You can have your video that pops off and goes viral, but it's about how ready you are for a video to pop off by having quality content for people to check out once they find your channel through that one video. If you have one video that goes viral and no other content, your channel won't grow. And that's what I've started working on. I'm not trying to make my one viral video, I'm trying to make quality content to grow my library of videos.
And who knows, maybe I might get "lucky" and have a video blow up, but I'll be ready by having extra content on my channel that people can check out.

The thing is that luck means "success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one's own actions." This means that people aren't successful on social media by luck. You might have a viral video by luck, but that isn't the same as creating a sustainable platform. You have to be taking actions if you want to see your social media platforms grow an audience. This means that it isn't ever luck. It's about putting in the work. The part no one wants to acknowledge is that this market is SATURATED with creators and that means that being good isn't enough. You have to be really remarkable, something special to stand out in the crowd.

Is there a quest for a magic ring I can grab somewhere to increase my Luck? 😅 I’ve been streaming for one year, and seen small bursts of growth slowly, and one thing that’s helped is trying to consistently post content every day. Another thing is improving my editing skills, so I’m not just posting “raw” clips from a stream with no context, hoping other people get the joke. I realized it’s less about relying on hope and luck, and more about grinding my skills, and leveling up my audio/visual production knowledge. Great video!

I started streaming about a couple weeks ago on my series x and peaked at 134 viewers (that came in and out with the time of the stream). I decided to change my name before I started streaming again, I have my new brand set up my name profile pic banner and UA-cam, I'm about to buy a desk mic, capture card. the next thing would be stream overlay, this one has my brand colors as well, the one I wanted is (Insight Stream Overlay Template Package).

As a small channel that's returned after life got in the way, I am seeing slow and steady growth streaming twice a week. It does take time, effort and gaining experience. I've started collaborating with a channel around the same size with similar interests which is getting good results.
The next steps for me are adding edited videos like I used to do, shorts and a third livestream in a week.
Yes, there is a little bit of luck involved. However, the dedication and passion to producing something of high quality will be the deciding factor.

Thanks for the vid. I agree that luck is a factor in some cases. Especially on Twitch IMO. However, as you said, you can't just do the bare minimum and expect to have massive growth overnight. I don't think this means that those who want to start creating have to make sure they have the best tech out of the gate. Start streaming, start making vids, and start learning. Fine-tune your skills along the way. As long as you are always striving to better your content and/or quality I think your chances increase.

I've heard some people say that, and while timing (which is often lumped into luck) can be a factor - just look at the explosion of VTubers back when the pandemic started - I also know that a lack of effort is obvious and detrimental to a streamer's growth.

I don't like it when people say that it's *all* down to luck because that's reductive. But an element of luck is involved and often many tip channels never acknowledge it. Some go out of their way to never mention it. Everything is about how hard you work or how consistent you are but that's not entirely true and it's annoying when people say it is.
You, small creator, may never get lucky. That is the hard truth. That doesn't mean you should give up - there's always a chance.

Me, I do think luck plays a role in growth on whatever platform (either luck in your overall life or luck because the algorhythm decides to randomly push one of your contents), but I also strongly believe that your skill to harness that stroke of luck, and the skill to market yourself and render yourself and the stuff you do attractive to people are WAY more relevant.
For example, I know that I hate marketing myself and unless I change that I'm probably not going to have much success on social media 😆

I don't even need to finish the video before commenting this:
Luck benefit those who are prepared, if you make a video that blows up but have no content to follow, everyone is gonna forget you in 1 week, if you get raided by another streamer with 1000 viewers but got no experience talking to the public, those viewers will quickly become 250 that are the out of pity and cause they wanna be nice, and eventually go back to 3. If you can not bother putting an effort to learn and create content you are proud of, no matter how lucky you get, it will go away the next day. People who say otherwise are just gonna be streaming 8 hours to an audience of 0 people for the rest of their lives...

From experience I can say that "its based on luck" is the argument of people who are trying to take the easy way out. I've stepped back from being lazy and whining and actually tried making content that's not just "watch me play a game" and comparatively I feel like I've been doing a lot better.

I think they are right. I stream on twitch and TikTok I average 14 viewers on TikTok and 0 on twitch 😂 I have 6 subscribers on TikTok and make a few hundred a month from TikTok. There is no benefit to stream on twitch, the community is toxic and there is 0 discoverability

I wonder how your recent videos apply to vtubing, if you know anything about that.

Vtubers are just another form of content creation, so it makes sense that there is a lot of overlap.

Literally everything applies to Vtubing still other than lighting and webcams I’d say.

Glad that this finally got explained: (unfortunately) not everyone who puts in the effort will grow, but ONLY the people who put in the effort will. Luck in getting discovered does play into it, but putting the consistent work in allows you to take advantage of when that luck stikes.

Best definition I ever heard for luck, is that luck is when OPPORTUNITY MEETS PREPAREDNESS.
Can you force an amazing opportunity to just fall in your lap? No. You can't. But, can you prepare, so that when an opportunity does present itself, you are ready to make the most of it? Heck yeah.
I was lucky enough to see my channel go from 460 subscribers to over 2500 in one weekend, because of an opportunity I got to collaborate with a much larger creator in my niche.
Was that super lucky that I got that opportunity? Sure. But at the same time would he have risked his own channel's reputation by collabing with me if I didn't have a track record and body of work he could check out?
If I didn't have over 100 videos and streams on the channel that I worked so hard on (without seeing much in the way of results) for a year, would this creator have been willing to work with me? Probably not.
If I didn't work hard on my skills in the game we make content about (Ark Survival Evolved) and have enough videos and streams on my channel to show that I'm serious, if I didn't have a lot of collabs already on my channel, that produced much less immediate results, but where I still worked hard to find the win-win, would he have felt safe risking his livelihood by bringing an unknown factor into his already successful content formula? Probably not.
And if I didn't have high quality content for them to check out right away, would his viewers have bothered to watch my content and subscribe and continue to watch my content? Definitely not.
So, you can't control the opportunities. But you can control how prepared you are. And once you are prepared, you can actively PURSUE those opportunities.
That's actually how this dream collab came to be. He didn't knock on my door. *I* reached out to *him*. I found a way we could collab that was easy for him, and didn't ask him to do much, that didn't disrupt the way he already structured his content.
I put 60+ hours into the project I did for him, and did my best to make sure it didn't inconvenience him in any way, and would only benefit him.
And you know what? Now I'm working on a second collab with him. Because he's come to trust me. Because I take this business seriously, and I take HIS business seriously, I know it's how he supports his family, so I'm not going to waste his time or do anything that could alienate his community. I am as protective of his success as I am of my own. That's what it means to look for the win-win.
So am I lucky? Heck yeah. And I worked dang hard on making this "luck" happen.
