  • Look, if I am being absolutely honest with you, there is some terrible advice out there, and I wanted to cover some of the advice that I don't agree with or I don't follow anymore, while also clearing up some REALLY awful twitch advice I saw on TikTok recently.

    How To Grow On Twitch?
If you want to grow your Twitch stream, it is important to be critical. Being critical isn’t a bad thing, people say, “Oh don’t be so critical of yourself!”.
But there are a lot of things you can control and improve, such as your visuals, audio, and most importantly your content that you’re creating. Watch back your VoD and be honest with yourself, is it up to scratch. Does your mic sound good? Are you engaging? Is it easy to watch and enjoy or is there something that is off-putting? Be honest, push yourself to grow, and become a better entertainer!
Because at the end of the day, the only way you are going to grow your stream is by growing yourself and being critical in a positive way.

What Bitrate And Settings Should I Use For Streaming?
The easiest way to understand bitrate is by calling what it actually is, your upload speed to the Twitch servers.
Now you’ll need a higher bitrate depending on how high quality you want your stream to be, this means 1080p 60 frames per second will need a bitrate of 6000, which roughly equals 6megabits upload speed on your end being taken up
By lowering your resolution and framerate, you can make it a lot easier to stream, for example, if you set your base canvas size to 1920x1080, but change your output to 1280x720 otherwise known as 720p you drop down to only needing a bitrate of 4500 or 4.5megabits.
If you still want 1080, you can even just lower your framerate from 60fps to 30fps and then adjust to 4500bitrate.
For more information visit this Bitrate graph: stream.twitch.tv/

This is a different type of video, I just wanted to casually talk a bit about some advice I've been frustrated by, and also I want to make sure I never hold myself above others on this channel, as I change, as the industry changes, I want to release videos that update our advice, our thoughts, and break down how sometimes videos from a few years ago, might need more context, nuance, or just be proven wrong.

I think streaming at a consistent TIME is important, because that is when the people [who have come to your stream and stayed] watch you. I think that level of consistency is important, but streaming every day until you burn out, is consistency you want to avoid.

    • @StreamScheme
      @StreamScheme  11 місяців тому +3

Yep, as I say in the video, it’s not that consistency and schedules don’t help, it’s that they shouldn’t be the main factor to growth, external content should lift you up and allow you freedom to be more flexible.

I’m one of those eager new streamers who took your advice on the discord server, set up your free template right away, and soon thought after a few months of streaming “holy cow, this would take a lot of time to run!” Lol. Luckily not many have joined it yet so I don’t have to worry too much at the moment, and will definitely find someone else to mod it. Thank you for always being so honest and transparent with us (and for the free discord template).

I'm so glad to hear you addressing the Discord issue. I have been struggling with my Discord community and I have been exploring the idea of sharing a community with a few streamer friends who have channels of a similar size. It doesn't make sense to me to take all this on and struggle with something where so many other streamers are doing exactly the same thing. After all, how many Discords can viewers reasonably engage with. I am working with a handful of folks right now & will supply Discord sections for them to use for their exclusive content and we'll share the more general sections. I'm hoping this will help lighten the load for all of us and maybe someone will either be very proficient in Discord or have a mod who is.

    • @Spasmin
      @Spasmin 11 місяців тому +1

Sharing a Discord is great to get started and build a server that sees some reasonable engagement in a relatively short time. Most small streamer Discords are completely dead, lets be real. However, once you grow to a certain size, a shared server can have the opposite effect. Since new members expect an extension of your chat - that they're comfortable and familiar with - and instead find themselves amongst a bunch of strangers brought in by content creators they don't know.
I recently went through this. I originally shared a server with two other streamers, but despite having hundreds of members in total, most newcomers would never post. We finally decided to split up into separate servers and it was the best choice we could've made. A somewhat rocky start notwithstanding.

I come to your channel for advice and understanding of streaming and continueing to stream and once again you have really hit the ball outta the park, since i started in september of last year full time streaming i have gone thru and done these things, i have over the last few months felt that burn out so darn hard to the point i was sick for several months and couldnt or barely could stream at all, i even ended up revamping my whole schedule which made me feel intensely guilty and like i was letting my community down. I am so grateful to your instructional vids, and as always thank you for giving small/new streamers like me a guide, a path to find our way and to follow.

OMG that last bit of advice is so damn true, and I only learned in the last few weeks. I kept to a solid grind and schedule then got burnt out really bad after a solid year and a half. I would stream on days where I wasn't mentally fit, and the streams suffered horribly for it.
After taking a six month break I returned, and jumped right back on that same grind. It wasn't until I realized that even after a long break that my solid viewership was still there to support me. So now I keep to a semi regular schedule so I can keep my mental state fresh....and touch some grass once in a while. Because, remember if all you do is stream, then you won't have any time to yourself or have any interesting stories to share when live.

1:47 Before I watched this video, I just ran into this problem. I found some people to help me, but it became about my stream and not about the community. If I stopped streaming for a few weeks…. The discord became inactive. No chatter etc. no events, etc.
Now I have people who help me out and it’s growing as a separate entity, instead of just a hub for my stream.

Very interesting advice, Eljay! I never thought of this stuff (besides stealing copyrighted music, lol). I will keep all this in mind as I try to stream going forward. For the schedule thing, would it be helpful to maybe only stream a few times a week, but still be consistent? To help avoid that burnout? I still feel like consistency is important with streaming, but I can also understand the stress that goes along with trying to keep that consistent schedule. What do I know, though? I haven't streamed for years like you have! Great content as always, Eljay!

I love the ending of this video, in the past i've streamed for the sake of views vs the sake of enjoyment. And as with most things in life, doing it for the joy of creating is a path to victory, where as creating for the sake of views and recognition is a path to sorrow.

    for the consistency thing:
    i stream 2 days for 3h
this is for me most of the time i can or want to offer..
also i need another day just for creating videos
it's a german horror channel so the audience is big enough but i don't expect to reach huge growth
yes streaming is fun, but i'd rather have a 3 hour bombastic stream then a 8 hour exhausted stream any day of the weak

In regards to sticking to a schedule, more so for UA-cam in my case than Twitch, it absolutely was the thing that started burning me out and started to remove the fun from creating content, the pressure to MAKE SURE a video was uploaded weekly, even if I wasnt feeling like it was to my usual standard of quality, really ate away at me and made me put everything on hold for a few months while I tried to figure out the path forward.
Now? There isnt a goal to make content creation my job, I make videos because I love doing it, and ill be damned if it hasnt unlocked some ideas for me to create that would not have happened if I was still stressing about videos each week. Now if only I could upload more than once every 2 months lol.

Streamer advice TikTok is horrible. I'm not a good streamer so I looked into it. Most of them are people who give generic advice to get new streamers to follow them and help them grow. Most of them stop giving advice after they reach their goal or their stream dies out because people catch on to their scheme and unfollow them

Do you do anything different? Are you telling people you're live? DO YOU HAVE A UA-cam CHANNEL and post regularly? These things will help..so they say, im an old man now IDK if I could do it with all the kids I have now.

I completely agree, that’s why my videos on music recommend dozens of free options, the only advice I would give is to try make sure you’re not just letting music play and you’re using it to make your content better.
Check out Chillhop, Gamechops, and NoCopyRight sound as well, all free with lots of genres and have been around for close to a decade meaning they have massive libraries.
Multiple sources of music will make it less boring, and if you specifically choose songs to help back the content your playing, like an epic boss battle sound track remixed on gamechops while trying to overcome a brutal challenge, you’ll make better content.
