Whoa, what a run. Other than a handful of places, I had really solid RNG throughout. Thought for sure my run was going to die in a couple places also, but we clutched and came through.

Nice, Dubldrop! Yoglitching was REALLY good nad rather insane in terms of the speed! Will you please finish your route for the guide? Also, will you please make an all bosses and full bestiary guide, please?
Alexander Kern Thanks, I'm hoping to have the Any% notes finished soon. I may do an all bosses one soon, it's a little harder because of the randomness of the bonus dungeons Crrool I think has notes for full beastiary, I have never run it so I'm not sure about the route
Hey, I was wondering if you could explain what was the purpose of repeatedly defeating the evil eye and obtaining lv. 18. Is it some sort of special level or something? I also wonder how you were able to obtain such a powerful item (i.e. the staff) at the very start of your run. Sorry if my questions are too trivial, last time I played this game was ~10 years ago.
We grind the mages to 19 to be able to learn Teleport and Healara magics. The OP equipment is obtained using a glitch exclusive to the PSP remake of the game
I know... lets make the single target spells into all enemy spells. The reskin is cool, additions to the game are pretty neat, but why change the basic setup?
Class change is done solely to allow us to pick up teleport for Black Wizard. The time we spend doing it is more than made up not having to backtrack in Sunken and exiting waterfall. It also gives us easy access to glitch Lordly Robes which drastically increase our mages magic stats for killing unrunnable packs as well as healing for Chaos. In a glitchless run Monk might be preferred but with access to any piece of equipment the Thief/Ninja becomes the best damage dealer we have due to how damage is calculated. Agility affects how many hits each character can get with 1 attack. Coupled with the Knights Barbarian Sword, Ninja does the most physical DPS out of any class in the game
Interestingly enough, due to how the equipment glitch works in the first place, the only reason we even have a Warrior in the party is to allow us early access to glitched equipment. If Thief could get us the same equipment we would run 2 thieves instead.
I started to learn to run this game yesterday. I learnt to run up to the lich. Tonight I tried actually "running" up to the lich for the first time. Done it in 38:55. How in the world am I gonna shave 8 minutes off of that? And I thought I was doing pretty good! XD
Actually, getting that Lich times on your first run is pretty solid. Id have to go back and check the vod, but I think my first ever run of FF1 had over 40mins Lich. Most of your timesave will come from practice. As you get better at movement, and menuing, you will start to see your times go down. But I wont lie to you, getting 30:55 Lich doesnt just happen every run. FF1 has an insane amount of RNG in it. I would say on average I can manage somewhere in the 32-34min range. What this VOD doesnt show you is how many runs I had to reset to get a Lich time like this. All you can really control is your execution. The game decides the rest of your fate ;)
hehe thanks for the encouragment! I did go up to the lich before, but by following a guide. That was the first time I was actually trying to be fast. The equipment glitching is hard for me! Not the glitch itself, although I do miss it a lot, but just the speed at which you navigate through the menu... change slots :O wtf lol. I know exactly what you are doing and yet, I'm unable to follow lol
Thats hours and hours of practice. I made savestates before each glitch menu and just practiced the menus until I could do them without thinking. Honestly though, none of the menus in this game are particularly complicated. By that I mean, the patterns you need to remember are pretty simple and with a little bit of practice, you can do it too :D
yeah the pattern is simple its just the speed at which you do it! I've learnt up to the airship now, and just ran up to it in 55:35 (killed the lich at 37:12 for reference to my previous attempt). I've made a couple of big mistakes too. I hoped to learn more of the run today but yeah... real life and shit. It's the first game I get into speedrunning. this is new to me but so much fun! Might start streaming runs when I learn the complete route! The goal is to complete a full run by next weekend :)
To be more specific, whatever equip used in the glitch must be equippible by a character adjacent to the one you are glitching on. The warrior is the only character able to equip the Mythril Axe which makes Black Robes, so I had to swap the mages I order to give them both the black robes. Its not necessary for me to return the positions for any glitch afterwards
@@Dubldrop Oh cool thanks for the info man. I thought it might've had something to do with the attack order for each party member since I know next to nothing about speedrunning this game.
@@NotTheWheel The character order is also relevant to incoming damage, the character at the top is more likely to be targeted by physical attacks, but thats not really relevant in the PSP speedrun. It does come into play in the speedruns of other ports of the game though
Technically, yes. Although that's not the entirety of it. The PSP version of FF1 has an equipment glitch where if you try to equip something while pressing the trigger button to move to another character at the right time it will try to equip that item on another character. You can use this to equip a piece of gear on a character that they cant normally equip. This has a couple of side effects which we abuse in the speedrun. The main property of it that we use is that if you try to equip something on the wrong slot (ie: A weapon on an armour slot, or an armour on a weapon slot) the game doesnt know what to do, and so it pulls the information it needs from the ID of the item of the corresponding type. For example in the case you mention, I am trying to equip the Mythril Hammer on my characters armour slots. What ends up happening, is the game pulls up the ID for the Mythril Hammer, but from the corresponding armour pool, and we get the Thiefs Armlet which has the same ID number. Because I dont have a Thiefs Armlet in my inventory, it creates one, out of thin air. If I did happen to have one in my inventory however, it would simply equip the one I had. It does have a secondary effect of being able to duplicate pieces of equipment if done right. There is another instance later in the speedrun where we do exactly this. We duplicate a Ribbon, by using the Equipment Glitch to create a Gigantaxe with it, and then using the Gigantaxe to make more Ribbons. This way we only have to pick up 1 Ribbon instead of all of them. If you're interested here is the look-up table of what each weapons ID in the game has for its corresponding armour: www.gamefaqs.com/psp/937909-final-fantasy/faqs/50991
The equipment glitch works by trying to equip something on 1 character while simultaneously swapping to another character using the L/R buttons. When done from a weapon to an armor slot, or vice versa, the game tries to load the same ID, and pulls up the corresponding ID of the other equipment type In this particular case we try to equip a leather hat on another characters weapon slot, and since the leather hat shares the same ID with the Judgement Staff, that's what ends up getting equipped. You can find a full list of what IDs correspond with eachother on gamefaqs, theres some pretty fun ones that arent utilized in the speedrun route
Some pieces of equipment can cast spells when used as an item. This does not consume it, like breaking rods in FFV or FFVI does, it will remain in your inventory after. Mages Staff, Gauntlets are other examples of this.
Normally yes, but there are a few items that can be put there that dont crash the game. The Ribbon happens to be one of them. When it calls up the animation, the ribbon brings up a sword sprite, which is why at some point (im assuming it happened at least once in this run) you will see a character block with the Barbarian Sword
I did see that. Very very interesting. Because of that you've become much more optimized given the equipped ribbon no doubt. Do you know of the other usable items. just off hand. Don't expect you to research it for me. :B
If I understand the new route correctly, both Lordly robes and Survival vests can be equipped there too. Nickynoel did some testing of that when she made the new Lust Dagger route, but I haven't ran FF1 since this run I do mean to come back eventually though
lust dagger run? barbarian sword isn't enough? :B well i've been playing FF1 ever since my ma showed it to me on that old NES box.i'm trying to summon the courage to run it myself but...hey every tip helps. heck i'm invested. I gotta do more research it seems.
Shortly after I took WR, it was discovered that there is a weapon called the Lust Dagger that gives a big boost to speed. You can obtain it via Equip Glitch when you get to Crescent Lake. So a new route was devised where we use the Lust Dagger to boost the speed of the mages, and stack Int on them so they can outspeed and AoE kill unrunnable encounters faster (Judgement staff is very slow). This route makes a lot of the RNG swings more consistent, and the route is overall faster because of it. The current WR uses that route and has a time of 1:22:xx
now being able to glitch to get the higher weapons and other items isnt what i call the fun way but interestingly enough i think this video is a glitch speedrun witch i find interesting to see.
greenTechguy1 no its a use of glitches the first glitch you can see is the knights armour glitch which if you played ff1 you would know that it can only be obtained in melmond for 36000 gil but theres a glitch where you can get it VERY early in the game however i dont know how to execute the glitch just look online
there are glitching and glitchless speedruns and (s)he should specify that this is a glitched speedrun. which is not nearly as impressive as a glitchless run
Tom Beachler It’s neither more or less impressive. It’s just a different category. Glitched and glitchless is still just buttons... sequencing reaction time and memory. Many aren’t interested in glitched speedruns though and that’s fine.
This is cool, but sorry this isn't a real true speed run when you are starting with knight's armor and other hacks like that. Do a real one with no glitches and run it true, then I will be impressed. Better yet, beat the entire game with only 1 white wizard the entire game and no other characters...and then I will be thoroughly impressed.
Thank you for enlightening me to the definition of Any% Speedrun. This entire time I must have been laboring under the false assumption that it meant beat the game as fast as possible, using any means available within the game.
In all seriousness though, glitchless doesnt make a speedrun more challenging or difficult, in fact in most cases it's the opposite. Generally glitches are complex and hard to perform consistently while also doing them quickly. All glitchless adds to FF1 is length and a wider RNG variance. You gain more time from good encounter luck, and lose more time from bad luck. And you need to grind more levels on Evil Eye.
@@Dubldrop Fair enough...and don't get me wrong, what you did was amazing and takes lots of practice to get everything down perfect.
