I think solar powered watches belong to the must-have section, at first i was opposed to the idea of solar powered watches but ever since i got my G-Steel Gshock GST-B100D it became my everyday watch,, you set it once and forget it ,, it's got the looks , convenience functionality and durability . No matter what snobs think, solar watches are great.

I have a question for you. I am more of a dress watch fan but have wanted a casio/Gshock recently and I just don't like the looks of them. Do you know any solar that look a little more like dress or dive watches?

@@mokgable I'd take a look at the Citizen Eco-Drive line. I have a Citizen Eco-Drive Corso AW1236-03A that serves as a dress watch, as well as a Promaster Dive "Ecozilla" for a solar dive watch.

I love Solar watches. Right now I am owning three, two could even considered dress watches (Lilienthal 1 Solar, Triwa Solar) and then there is my apocalypse watch. I own it for 18 years now, still runs on the first battery, it's a Casio Pro Trek PRG-60 L.

I would add a watch with a nonstandard display such as the rotating globe or the mono hand display. This gives your collection a unique flavor.

Every collection needs to have a 'gift' watch for the times you're showing your collection to somebody and wish to gift them one of your watches. I practically de-Seikoed my collection by gifting them to friends and family, including some pieces I thought I'll have forever in my collection and that are hard to find nowadays (or have insane prices). I'm wiser now-when I encounter a good deal on a watch I don't think only 'would this fit my collection well', but also 'would this work as a nice gift?'...

    For years I stuck to a formula - LAND - SEA - AIR - DRESS - SPORTS - BEATER
    EG -
    1) Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical
    2) Seiko SKX
    3) Bulova Lunar Pilot
    4) Orient Bambino
    5) Tissot PRX
    6) G-Shock Square
Every watch had a different strap material including nylon, rubber, stainless steel, leather, resin
All boxes ticked - all iconic watches - all reasonably priced - a well rounded line up
Damn I miss that little collection

The way I approach my addiction is pretty much the same (Chrono / Dive / Tool-watch / Dress-watch)… but I am also trying to create new categories based on usage, in order to feed my addiction, lol!
ex. Sleep-watch 😂 Currently my beloved Casio Royal with the lovely night light.
Game-watch 😅 A recently acquired Databank, for nostalgia factor when I play Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc…
Also… I am thinking of a Driver-watch, a cheaper mecha-quartz chrono to always have in the car, along with leather racing gloves, to make me think I am actually racing when I am stuck in city traffic! 🤣
Oof… I will have to invent some new categories down the road to justify more unique watches that I ‘need’… lol!

I have a 'holiday ' watch ...ok, watches. A watch that I don't mind taking a bullet for the collection. They're usually the cheapest ones in my box. Yes, I got obsessed over the 'perfect' holiday watch ( analog Casios, Vostock, Lorus, etc.) that I don't have enough holidays to wear them all.

I have an everyday watch, my Seiko SARB035. A diver - Marathon GSAR 41mm. A solar tool watch - Casio GW-5000U-1ER. And a chrono - my grail Omega Moonwatch 3861 Hesalite.
I don’t need a dress watch. I’d go with a large quartz Cartier Tank Must, black dial, should I need one.
I’m not into vintage also. But I’d love to add a 16570 Rolex Explorer II Polar. A neovintage classic.

Interesting choices. I suggest much depends on life style. I enjoy travel and thus a GMT is important. I also travel to places in which wearing anything flashy or of value is not wise. To cover that I have a Casio World Timer. I dearly want a Chronograph, but with small wrists and poor vision, it's not an easy find. Under 40mm case with short lug to lug length, with easily readable scales ...... haven't located one yet. The possible options in collecting watches is a deep rabbit hole..... and can become very costly ....... but the search is great fun..

I pretty much have every type of watch, except for a chronograph. For the tool watch, I've got a few digital Casio watches, like the DBC-32. For the dive watch, I have a Citizen Promaster Dive "Ecozilla" (also Solar Powered). For the every day watch, I have a Seiko 5 SNK789. For the dress watch, I have a Timex Q 1978 reissue. For the vintage watch, I have an Omega De Ville 162.0060 (which also fills the dress watch role). And for the Solar Powered watch, I have the aforementioned Ecozilla, as well as a Citizen Eco-Drive Corso AW1236-03A (kind of an every day watch since it's on a NATO strap but can be a dress watch). Really, the only thing I want to complete the collection would be an Omega Speedmaster. I like the history, the looks, and the brand.

I do have one of each of the seven categories, my solar is a Pulsar motor sports themed Chronograph. But of course, I have another 18 watches, and I can make up a list of 6 another two times, but only one solar ! Whatever about the others, the solar is the real deal, you're not changing batteries, you can stick it a drawer and even after 5 or 6 months in the dark, it's still running, and has the advantages of quartz accuracy.

After a few years as a watch enthusiast - and prior to your video - I already tend to group my watches into seven broad categories, as follows - GADA, beater, pilot, dive, chronograph, GMT and vintage/dress watches.
For me, a field watch with decent water resistance is either a GADA or a beater depending on looks and price.
And for the dress watch enthusiasts, I can recognise a lovely dress watch but I just don’t wear one often enough but I do like vintage watches and their smaller dimensions and classic looks means they are likely what I would wear if I want something a little smarter.
And in terms of volume I tend to have comparatively more dive, beater, GADA and vintage watches and only a few pilot, chronographs and GMTs. And I’m good with that as it reflects what I wear and my taste.

Tool: Casio Pro Trek PRG-60 L (solar powered), several G-Shocks
    Diver: Spinnaker Bradner
    Dress: Triwa SSAB Automatic
    Chrono: Timex Q Chronograph GMT

I also need a watch with indiglo or a backlight, and I need a watch with tritium tubes for when I don't have a hand free to turn on a watch backlight but I need to see the time and can't depend on lume to last. Like, living in a cloudy area? I've left 'good lume' watches out all day and by 2am I can't see anything. Tritium tubes all the way.

    in my opinion you need:
1:G shock or citizen eco drive.
2:field or explorer type of watch.
    3:Dressy watch
    4:pilots watch.
thats it. the g shock covers the diving part. you could add a tritium watch to be able to see it at night without having to activate a light.

Dive watch: Doxa Sub 300 Searambler (and another for bonus Seiko SPB071J1 "PADImas")

    For me its:
    1. Sports diver (robust and cool)
    2. Chronograph toolwatch (useful!)
    3. Dress watch with squared case, guilloche and roman numerals (cartier tank style)
    4. Dress watch with a round case and applied indices or enamel dial
One dress watch feels like not much, and a tank style is too formal for casual lifestyle

You have any recommendations for dressy looking casios?

  • @TheRollerballer
    @TheRollerballer 6 місяців тому

    My list would be:
    - A pair of good everyday watches. One a little bit dressier, the other more sporty. Both of them with enough specifications and materials to accompany daily life without fear of mistreatment, reliable and contained in size. The dressier one more suitable to use it with a suit, cause is so sad to have an elegant watch that go out from the box bareley a few times per year. The sporty to join the rest of the occasions. And yes, many tool watch options can be excellent everyday watches.
If you suit up regularly, then I recommend a true dress watch (leather strap, no lume, clean and legible dial, nice hands, thin and clean box) and a more casual one to give variety to the wrist.
    - A tool watch. It can be a real diver, a chronograph, GMT, altimeter, a pilot's watch, etc. Depending on your needs. This tool has to make sense for us, not only to fill out the list; and also, a tool watch that makes sense to wear without the fear of mistreating it; there is nothing worse than not wanting to wear an automatic chronograph or a high-end diver for fear of it being damaged, hell, if you fear that, then better get another type of tool watch.
    - A watch for rough use. By this I mean a watch that we will need when we work with our hands, when we go outdoors, etc. A G-Shock is the natural choice, but also many divers are resistance watches, Citizen's Promaster line, many Seikos, Vostok, etc. It is very sad to see pieces that were once nice watches in a deplorable state for the simple reason that the wearer never considered a watch more suitable for rough use. Let's stop romanticizing damaged watches as marks of a unique and personal history, no one wants to see their Rolex Submariner full of scratches or dents. Man, even a cheap Casio looks terrible if it's damaged 'cause wasn't designed for a demanding purpose. Of course, it's convenient for this one to be quartz, and preferably, solar powered.
    - A unique/fun watch. By this I mean a watch that is out of the ordinary, with bright colors, or perhaps with a striking, fun or hypnotizing dial; a weekend watch, a special edition. A real fun watch to wear and a conversation theme every time. Could be a high end complication, could be a cereal box watch, but I think that kind of watches speaks for uniqueness and personal taste.
After all that said, go and collect all that you want and makes you happy!!!

What I want my watch collection to look like is obviously very different from what you want yours to look like. I have no interest in having a varied, well balanced collection of watches from every category. Fortunately for me, I am hyper focused on certain types of watches and that's what I have focused on. I only buy what I want and don't worry about owning watches in other categories just to have them.

I like to have choice in my collection. Therefore I tend to have 2 each in the following categories. To get diversity in size, colour, and just to excuse my disgusting watch habit.
    1. Sporty but dressy (Cartier is the king of this! JLC and GS rock too).
    2. Everyday wears (Longines / Oris / Tudor / IWC etc shine here).
    3. The rugged Diver (Seiko reigns supreme.)
    4. The wild cards (bit of colour / a chrono / a different design style - for me Panerai, Bell & Ross etc are stars of this category).
    5. Beater (G-Shock. All day.).
Leaves me with 9 watches (only need one G-Shock). Perfect - for me.
