On this episode of Florida Sport Fishing TV, Capt Mike invites a couple of friends aboard our Mercury powered SeaVee to enjoy a hot bonito bite. The action is hot and heavy on the troll as the guys work together to fill the box with plenty of bait for the upcoming offshore season.

While fishing from a pier, I would cast shiny 1 oz. spoons or white bucktails. Retrieve the lures fast. Or, you catch live bait at the pier with a sabiki rig and simply freeline a livie out. They'll crush it! - Capt Mike,
I love catching those Bonita's for bait ther fun
I ice them as soon as caught, when I reach the dock I carefully fillet both sides and then I cut the excess meat off so they are just about 1/2 inch thick, evenly across entire fillet. Then I cut the center bone out so the entire side is now an intact flimsy slab. I vacuum bag two in a bag and i use them as needed as season progresses. - Capt Mike

thanks for the tips (novice angler here) ... i used these feathers yesterday with my 4 year old son, and we slammed them off ft. lauderdale trolling near the bait fish jumping...it was his first ocean fish, and even though he had to reel it in from the rod holder, rather than hold the rod, he was grinning ear to ear.

I just ate the one I caught and it was really good. I cooked it like a steak, very small pieces with Cajan salt and pepper. Didn't bleed it or anything. I was trolling for Maui Maui, ended up wrestling one for 10-15 mins, about 15lbs. Didn't know what it was but it was good. It's not really a Bonita (false) because those have stripes horizontal to its body. These are so good. It's bloody and red, but tender, and I was looking for tips to catching more so thank you!!!

Dude those things are perfectly fine to eat. You have to cook them right though.
I have come across splashes like that this morning while jigging, and tried to cast on them. But epic fail, my set up wasn't that good, I am using a 22 g casting jig. I'll try some other time.
In order for circle hook to be effective, it is best fished with live or natural cut bait, not lures/jigs. The idea is for the fish to eat the bait/hook and turn away before coming tight, with a lure on the retrieve, the fish snatches the bait but doesn't have a chance to turn. - Capt Mike

do you just put these in the freezer to save for strip bait or do you cut them when you get home and freeze them?
hi, i fish of the pier in tampa, and there are some of these bonitos, but i can't get any even though i see them, what is the best way to catch them??? Thanks
Nice video--one funny thing though. The host goes to to the trouble of protecting his skin via cloth around his neck (good idea), protects his eyes with good sun glasses (2nd good idea) then TURNS THE HAT BACKWARDS, humh? Protects the back of the neck--but the cloth already does this, so maybe after the 10th cancer skinned off his face, he might decide it is ok to wear it the way it was designed. Not to mention that the shadow across the face from a forward facing hat WAY outperforms the sunglasses, any day of the week. Try it, it works.
Jmichael Isbell Thank you for watching and you are correct. You'll notice in the vast majority of my videos my hat is in fact worn correctly to provide max. protection. On rare occasions when filming, I may turn it backwards to avowing shade on my face. Thanks for caring. - Capt Mike
Florida Sport Fishing And my apology Cap if I sounded like a "smart ass"--it is all the kids who wear em backwards-one even told me one day on a creek "this glare is terrible" with his backwards. I can see it does not apply to you, and THANK you for being both a gentleman and sportsman AND for posting this great video. In my mind, Bonito pound for pound, on light tackle are impossible to beat.

+Jmichael Isbell I have seen lots of fishing videos from Miami to the Keys and most guys that where these hats have them like that so there is a reason.
airraptor I know, it is very "IN" to wear them backwards--but not very smart in terms of protecting the skin--or putting a shadow across the eyes. A few seasons back, fishing on a late afternoon on a creek, a young guy came up, hat backwards, and complaining to me that "the glare is just terrible". Go figure (but he looked cool I guess)

Yes, I was implying lets continue to troll for a little while longer without pulling the throttles back. The idea is to keep the forward momentum going and often a second and third fish will jump on the other baits. Capt Mike
Well neither. Me and my family live in Colorado, but we visit my father-in law there and my son loves fishing both inshore and offshore. He's had a sudden interest in catching little blacken tuna, any recommendations on where to go for those?
Hi Jay, right now there are scattered schools of football blackfins all up and down the southeast coast, with Boynton down to Miami really the epicenter of the bite. You will find the fish in 250-450 ft., and you can catch them trolling small feathers, jets, and even planers with shiny spoons. - Capt Mike

Sure you can eat bonito you guys just choose not to or don't know how to prepare it, if done correctly its a great tasting fish

Florida Sport Fishing Depends what you want... Well the Japanese have come up with some very interesting ways of consuming bonito, from delicious bonito flakes if you like fish soup this are a must for any fish soup, (it takes a while to make but it can be done, it's very labor intensive) to sushi and sashimi, the easiest and most patriotic way to prepare them for us Americans is to bleed the fish, completely bleed it, marinade and fry. I usually bleed them by making a cut along the bottom of the head by the gills and hanging them upside down in a dock or the edge of the boat( to not make a mess) WHILE they are alive that way most of the blood will be pumped out of the fish, at this point treat it like a regular fish, clean it well, and marinate it with your favorite marinade, let it sit in the fridge for a day and fry. Anthony Rodriguez Hmmm, yes, I am very familiar with bonito flakes and I do know there is an Asian market for raw bonito but truthfully, I dont man, there are plenty of other fish in the sea that are far better eating as far as Im concerned. I'll stick with using bonito for bait. - Capt Mike

Thank you, Im clearly aware those are NOT actually bonito, or false albacore or little tunny to be exact. However across Florida and regions further south, everyone calls them bonito.

To be honest im surprised it takes you guys to take so long to catch them i mean ive caught the true bonito with medium tackle within a matter of seconds + i jigg them from shore

those are NOT BONITAS', they are "little tunny's" a distinct specie.

true we call them skipjack and their not so tasty but they make the BEST bait ever
POLYZENIDAS they are excellent eating. Just had one from the keys 1hr ago, 1 of my favorite tasting fish that I've caught.

Hell, they will bite an empty coke can on top water if the bite is on and when they are in a frenzy and active. You can even catch them on bass top water lures like a 5" spook. These fish will hit anything if they're hungry. It's an awesome sight. There's some awesome slow-mo video on youtube of people using topwater plugs with the hooks taken off, and they get awesome footage of the endless strikes.

Bonita's are edible just slit there gills and u can bleed them eaisly
frank miller I'm sure with proper care and preparation they can be edible, but they are very bloody and rich and certainly not at the top of my list, or anywhere on my list for that matter. Do you eat them? - Capt Mike
Bleeding a fish by the gills is a great way preserve the taste of the meat especially if that fish is apart of the tuna family. The reason being is that as the fish slowly dies from lack of water over its gills its body temp rises as it dies because the fish becomes very stressed as this happens, and this begins to spoil the taste of the meat. If you break the gills right after you catch a tuna or what'not and put it head first in a cool bucket of sea water it will bleed to death. This does 2 things. It keeps the fish from stressing out as it dies. And it also takes most of the blood out of the meat. Picked up this tip from Japanese captains over in Okinawa btw. :)

frank miller Burst the gills and put in the bait well to bleed out for an hour or so. Then cut the head out and fillet the sides. Take the skin out (optional) and cut out the middle strip of meat in each fillet that has a dark red colour. Tell me how it taste
Florida Sport Fishing Yeah, I always keep and cook them in the same way as Japanese Katsuo (skipjack)
I think it would have been very helpful if there was some demonstration on how to use these as bait. How to make Strips, etc... This video was pretty repetitive IMHO....
