Modify your boat at your own risk. - Навчання та стиль
Great input. I love Merc's. But I always have turned towards Yamaha. There quality, and reliability has always held up every time throughout the years.
I'm no professional but it sounds like you might need to push some of the weight towards the bow to get on plane easier. Love the content keep up the good work.
I have an older Suzuki 25 hp oil injected two stroke outboard on my Jon boat to bass boat and I still go 25 mph. I have been wanting to upgrade so it was really cool to see the difference between these. Thank you for the info! Always appreciate it.
How much you want for it
Nice video. Thumbs up. My boat will be fiberglass 13,5 ft with a casting deck and trolling motor in the front. I really wanted that Yamaha, but finally I ordered Merc 20. Still Yamaha is heavier by around 10kg, so you can feel that already. So that was the main reason. Second thing, that in Poland there's over 1 thousand$ price difference between these 2 models. I agree 100% with that statement regarding weight to power ratio. If my boat would be 1 ft longer I would go with Yamaha.
Hi, I have the new f25 short shaft on a 14ft Sylvan super snapper. I get 23mph with 2 guys and gear. Love the engine so far except for low rev vibrations. It is also very fuel efficient. Love your videos. Regards , Dave from Ireland 🇮🇪👍🎣
Hi, according to my research on the topic of Mercury. Tohatsu manufactures Mercury motors from 40HP down to 2.2hp. up to 180 000 units for Mercury/year. The early Mercury FourStroke engines were originally manufactured jointly with Yamaha ; Mercury provided the block, crankcase, crankshaft and connecting rods, while Yamaha produced the cylinder heads for the 50hp. ... Both models were completed with mid-sections and gearcases. Mercury's agreement with Yamaha ended in March 2006.
Thanks for the review. I am making plans to get a new fishing boat in the near future and I cant imagine needing a boat over 16'. My last boat was a 14' river jon, I feel the need to go up in size to fish two folks comfortably.
my dad and I are both 5'10 (I'm 14 though) and we're pretty light I'm around 125 lbs and my dad is 140 lbs so a 12 ft Jon boat does the trick. my dad's 15 ft skiff can allow my dad and his 2 big friends (250 lbs and 350 lbs) pretty comfortably. just my dad and I is a joke lol
Good video and very interesting. I have just go the Tohatsu 20hp 4 stroke outboard after a lot of research. The reason I chose the Tohatsu was it's reliability and weight of just 43kg compared to the yamaha 20hp at 56kg. Really enjoyed watching and subbed you. Atb Steve 👍
Thanks!
I’ve got the 2020 merc 20hp on a 16.5 sylvan sea snapper. I’ve gotten 27mph with 2people and diy bass boat kit. Just installed an “on the fly jack plate” at the end of the summer only got to do one run with the jack plate on. Looking forward to next season nothing but snow now. Keep up the great vids.
Damn I have deep v 17 aluminum boat and only get 7 mph with 2 ppl .
so 2 people total or 3 people with you?
Thanks for the vid. A lot of our local lakes are electric only but the biggest has a 20hp limit. I grabbed a cheap mid-90s Mariner 15 for my old rebuilt 89 Alumacraft (16.5ft) but I want a nice motor. I'll look at the Merc 20 with the lower pitch prop.
Yamaha F25 EFI is still the best choice, if you are looking for reliability and a long lasting motor. My friends Yamaha F25 has over 5'000 HRS on it and runs perfectly. I am happy with mine too!
The only problem with the Yamaha is you may think the fuel gauge stoped working lol.
Really enjoyed this discussion. I have a 2014, Crestliner Kodiak 14, with a 20 hp, 4 stroke, carbureted outboard. I am a big fella, 350ish, and I have serious performance issues. Having trouble planing out. My next fix attempt is a smaller prop.
I got a 2006 yamaha 25hp 2 stroke on a 16' Alweld, 11 1/4 pitch prop I think. Motor sits up high on a t h marine jackplate, can't wait to see what she does.
i have a 9.9 merc and a 9.9 tohatsu. tohatsu makes the base power heads. (block crank rods pistons cam head intake manifold) and there are variations from year to year and model to model. from there everthing else is just enough different you cant swap parts. i suspect many parts are made to different specs by tohatsu for mercury. and mercury makes some of their own. the ignition system carb and charging systems are completely different.
A $3 billion division of Brunswick Corporation (NYSE: BC), Mercury provides engines, (who makes merc) Tohatsu Marine Corporation was set up in 1988 as joint venture with Brunswick Corporation, USA. Mercury Marine is a division of Brunswick Corporation and many of the smaller Mercury Outboards are just rebranded Tohatsu Engines. In addition, the entire line of Nissan outboards are rebranded Tohatsus.(who makes Tohatsus)
Merc/tohatsu 20 hp 333cc block yamaha 25 hp 432cc i think and gears not the same merc 2.15.
. yamaha is 2.00 or 2.08 gears merc 25 is 3 cyl. and 1.98 tohatsu 25 is a 3cyl. also same block as merc but 2.17 gears.
You should make kits on your website of all the electrical stuff ( like bus bars, fuse boxes, wires, battery charger)
Great video !
I can attest to the rattling sound. Just bought a 2021 Mercury 20 hp and it sounds identical. No other issues. Overall I love the motor but the rattle is annoying.
i have a 2001 15 hp 4 stroke and just found that the cover is what was vibrating. it had an adjustable bracket on it and took care of the noise. not sure if the new ones are the same ??
Tohatsu and Merc 20s and 15s are both made by tohatsu. Same displacement (333cc), if you look at the side by side the power heads are the same as well as the lower unit. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, Tohatsus are some great little engines. Yamahas are a unique in-house design. Pretty much all engines out there 9.9 and under are all made by Tohatsu.
Most of Mercury small motors are rebadged Tohatsu, sometimes Mercury change things eg tiller. Which you buy will depend on price, warranty, features and aftermarket support not that you will needed except for odd service.
I know you can't get them but I feel my 1996 Merc Sea Pro 30hp 2 stroke has so much torque. No problem getting up on plane without full throttle, almost feels like I could pull a skier up.
My 14v starcraft is rated for 30hp. Currently run a 83' mariner 9.9 on it. Going to have to upgrade as I build over the winter. Im hoping to get a 25hp to reach 30mph.
Definitely will buy the Merc 20 hp for my 12 ft G3
Thanks for the help
Hey I wanna thank you for recommending the 25hp Yamaha to me a couple weeks ago. Down payment placed, now just gotta play the waiting game.
Waiting for mine too! I ordered back in Aug and told that it won't arrive until Jan 2021. Not sure how long you'll have to wait for yours.
Any chance youll be able to do the "same boat" compairison? I'm a bit less concerned with raw speed but more about fuel range. An extra $1 a day in gas is no biggie, but covering a large distance can be importan.
I put a 20hp suzuki 4 stroke on my 14ft Mirrocraft aluminum boat and the motor vibrated too much at trolling speed. Had a 15hp Merc 2 stroke before and no issues with vibration. Thinking of going with the 15hp Merc 4 stroke. Any issues with too much vibration from anyone??
I just bought my first 2021 Yamaha F25LWHC for my little 1967 14’ boat. Old school meet new school!!
Glad you found one. Ive been looking and can't find one anywhere
Hi there,My 2020 tohatsu 20hp on a 110kg boat uses 2 ltrs of fuel per hour with the 2 of us.10 pitch comes standard..If I change the revs alittle that rattle disappears.A 30hp would be nice, but the 20 is very ok.Like your videos, thankyou.
i bought a Yamaha 20hp 4 stroke on a 3.7 mtr tinnie off a mate , engines still brand new and not run in yet ... cant wait to test her out aye .
Lord have MERCY! Great Video! I'm was raised on fords but I wished Yamaha would build trucks too!
Thank you for another cool vid. I think the stuttering with the 9" pitch is because of the rev limiter(?)
Agree. Running a smaller pitch will increase rpm at less throttle. So you may be hitting the Rev limit. for break in they may say 'half throttle' but what they want is not exceeding some rpm under load, at half throttle with the stock prop. You're adding a variable and then half throttle is not the same. I'd be careful with the rpm during break in.
good show, thanks
Anyone tried a spitfire 9.3 x9.5 on a f25 for heavy applications???? Waiting for ice to melt but that will be my combination attempt on a lund fury
I think you just convinced me to buy a CNC power tilt setup. I have a 2013 Merc 20hp on my 16ft SpringBok fishing boat. Would be nice to be able to tilt up for shallow weed beds/docks and to pull up the motor over night on the dock. I can obviously pull it up at the dock by hand, but its just a pain in the ass and I always imagine the motor cowell flying off one time as you need to use the handle on it to help pull up the motor.
If considering changing to heavier motor, place few kgs in stern equivalent to weight difference and see how boat handles. Most importantly try it in moderate to heavy sea.
How would any these motosr run on my 11' Boston Whaler Sport 11 short shaft with 4 people. My 1969 Chrysler 20HP seems taxed out with four people and cannot put the boat on plane with the 8-1/2" X 8-1/2" prop. However, It does well yet with two adults!
I purchased the Merc 15 HP EFI 4 Stroke and I was curious about the rattling sound
Watching your videos have convinced me to buy the new 25hp Yamaha. I want to add an rpm/hrs Guage. Do u have any recommendations?
In my opinion yamahas are the best, have a couple of f150 and some smaller ones, each of them has over 2500 h on them and they run great, i had some other motors but i didn t have a very nice experience with them.
30 and under are made by tahotsu. Merc has props from 8-13 pitch a 9.5 p spitfire prop from Mercury probably work good for you
Good morning I would like to know how much a 40hp and 25hp 4tienpos long leg yamaha costs me
Hey hi .So at 3min 35 sec what was throwing all that water up on the motor on the starboard side. Seams like there might be alot of drag there.
I'm guessing their transducer.
Tohatsu make most outboards for most companies now. I love Tohatsu.
Anyone who wants a general idea on what prop to use for thier application. Can use this equation. It's basically the rpm ÷ gear ratio x pitch, and ÷ then divide by 1056. So if I know a 9 pitch is 6000 rpm on my engine and I want more speed, I reduce my rpm 200 rpm because for every pitch up you reduce it that amount to 5800 ÷ 2.08 x 10 pitch for speed ÷ 1056 = I get 26.40 mph. My engine gets full power at 5500 rpm so know I don't want anything higher than a 10 pitch or it probably will bog under heavy load and probably won't plane.
Watch out for the new Tohatsu 25/30 coming out in August 22, 30 lbs lighter
Great video I want to ask your opinion I have a 1448 Tracker Grizzly and I'm wanting to get a new 4 stroke I'm really considering the new Merc. 20 over the 25 mainly because of the weight difference which is 53 lbs. (20'' shaft with elect. start and power trim and tilt) I don't think I would gain much if any speed going with the 25 because of the weight what 's your opinion.
@@TinyBoatNation thanks do you think I would be better off with a 25 or maybe even a 30 in that case
Ive had my 1996 mercury 25hp since i was 18? Or 17 maybe, Me and that motor grew up together. Same year we were born haha,, my grandpa passed it down to me. It still runs good, its on my boat rn… but anyways when I researched the yamaha 4 stroke 25hp that theyy made a compact version 125lbs…. Thats what finally made me pull the trigger on a 4 stroke just 2 weeks ago,, so i still gotta break it in…
The other 4 strokes I see are sooo huge and heavy… espcially the earlier yamaha 4 strokes..
I compared a 2 stroke 18 tohatsu to a 4 stroke 18 tohatsu on the same boat ,and got 1.5 mph faster with the 2 stroke, so I bought a 25 2 stroke Yamaha that pushed my 17 ft lowe bass boat with 2 guys, and all my equipment at 22.5 mph. I am happy, but the carbs have to be in sync, or it will pop and idle bad. It is a 2007 100 to 1 mix. Just changed oil seals on the bottom unit that were leaking. Over all it is a good motor.
Don’t run 100:1
I would rum 50 to 1....your gonna burn that thing up
Would the 20hp mercury suit a 3.3m aluminum pontoon boat?
What's the TLDR for this video, which motor do you think is better if you had to pick between a Merc 20 and a Yamaha 20?
Is the 20hp Merc opposed firing?
I have an old 1969 V-hull aluminum boat, with a 1969 Evinrude 25hp electric start 2 stroke motor. It runs okay, but my motor doesn't charge the battery. Plus, the motor isn't reliable. If I've run to a couple of different places to fish and shut it off for just a few minutes it doesn't want to restart. It fires, but doesn't catch and run. I have to sit and wait 30 minutes or more before trying to restart because I don't want to run the battery down. I'm old and pull starting that motor kills me. So, I'm looking to buy a new Yamaha like your 25hp. On a fixed income I'm not sure if I can afford it. If you don't mind me asking, how much did yours cost?
Tohatsu does make the small Mercury’s 30 hp and below compared my 2014 20 hp tohatsu to my uncles 2014 20 hp mercury they are the same motor with the exception of the gear shift in the tiller. I now have a 30 hp efi mercury and anytime I order parts I order tohatsu parts cuz they are cheaper than mercury parts most of the time. Saying that my old 20 hp tohatsu was tough as an anvil.
They used to...now merc 30 below are made in china not tohatsu japan
At 4:08 (and other shots) what are the white tubes on the gunnel?
It’s probably the tubes from the bilge pump and live wells
bought an old s14 last summer really dirty cleaned it up painted inside etc. has old johnson 25 on back ! am considering yamah or merc 15,20 or 25 . i think the 15 or 20 will do me well speed not that important to me ! i am a yammie fan but have heard there are issues with merc ?? any input ?
I'd stick with the 25 johnson.
Question: I am looking a the 20hp with electric start and power tilt (not power trim). My understanding is that it cannot be adjusted when your going full speed (the cylinder isn't strong enough). So its not really considered power trim. But you can adjust the angle of the motor at idle or low speeds. Is this correct?
The power tilt will not work while underway. If you try to ‘trim’ it at speed, the cylinder makes an awful noise. It’s nice to be able to tilt it to the ideal angle when desired and when at the sandbar.
About tohatsu, they are a Japanese company that makes merc, Suzuki, and I think yamahas 25 horse and below motors, each manufacturer just has their own fuel system and cowlings/ shafts but the internals are all the same essentially
Tohatsu builds merc 30hp and under...suzuki builds there own so does yamaha .
The larger tohatsu 200 225 are built by Honda.
Where you make the video from
My 25 hp rocks on my Grizzly.... adjustable power tilt and installed planer and stainless prop......
Good true thorough comparison im a yamaha guy if were only comparing merc and yam but throw a johnson 25 or evinrude 25 in the mix hands down goin with the jobnson evinrude man
They no longer Exist
@@kain4645
There are still plenty of johnson and evineudes out there. And parts were readily available and I still believe parts are not hard to get.
@@boydlittou9446 can’t buy new is what I am saying
Need your help.... I bought a beautiful True Kit Discovery 4.0 meter by 1.8 meter inflatable caterman. It is rated up to 20 HP short shaft. My local area dealer is Yamaha. He is helping me find a 20 hp EFI electric start, manual tilt Yamaha. It is around 126 lbs with 432cc displacement. 1st question. Some of the other Competitor competitors like mercury Suzuki to Hotsy etc. have a lesser displacement 20 hp engines but are quite a bit lighter around 100 pounds compared to the Yamaha I believe Mercury also has power tilt in addition to electric start I’ll be at a lesser cubic centimeter should I stick with the Yamaha 432CC although heavier with manual till I inflatable boat let me know your thoughts since I am in the ordering phase now
Just curious what you ended up with as I'm about to order that same boat and shopping for engines now. Yamaha or Tohatsu 20. Wondering if the larger displacement Yamaha helps you get on plane sooner either heavier loads despite the extra engine weight. Also, how do you like the true kit?
do you mess with stainless steel props?
Can u please accurately tell us how much your boat weighs?
Tahatsu does make all 30hp and down outboards for merc
Suzuki has a 20hp long shaft electric start and electric tilt that is 120 lbs.
I am between 40hp tiller mercury or yamaha for my jon boat . What would you choose ? . Looks like yamaha vibrates in low speed more . Did you experience that ? . Thanks
we have Yamaha and Suzuki 150hp, 40hp, 75hp, 300hp, 225hp, 250hp, 400hp, 90hp, 200hp, 100hp, 115hp, all 4 stroke
Let me know if you’re interested getting one for your boats
Yamaha, Mariner, Mercury, Tohatsu. The basic power units are all made by Tohatsu, then fitted up and dressed up in various casings etc.
You had some serious rooster tails going on there, did you check the mounting height of that Yam ??
Not the Yamaha. They make their own.
Yamaha and mariner are both made by yamaha not tohatsu
Yamaha has the same rattle. And vibration. But still choose it over the rest due to durability.
I have a SS 10.5 x 11 on my boat same motor and its crazy will go 26 with a fat guy and 2 skinny guys lol
So is less pitch more torque or faster rpm to plane , I ran a 13° pitch stock vs 13 ° pitch 4 blade, 4 blade hole shot to plane loosing a few mph on top but 2 " big guys max gear electric/ pull. Johnson 25 2 stroke , no bog" J-14: carolina
So going down from 13,12, to 10,9 will so exactly what" more pitch slower to plane but more torque" less pitch faster rev"s less rotating mass/ pitch? Will motor rev a few hundred more rpms, with less pitch ??! Familiar with race car rear ends in gearing only
Ordered 2021 Suzuki 25 after much research.
Why did you choose that company instead of Tohatsu or Mercury?
Try the Evinrude Etec 25 hp
Could I put a Yamaha 25 on my 1989 sweet 16 tracker tiller?
If it's not loaded down too much yes. It will be just enough barely
Yo soy de Uruguay gracias
me personally I love the new 2022 mercury 9.9. weighs only 80 pounds and with a load could get a 15 ft boat boat on plane. we tested it on my dad's 15 ft skiff and it just barely got it on plane. on my 12 ft Jon boat with a full load it'll run at 22 mph. just one person with all the gear about 25 mph. just one person no gear it might push 29-30 (we usually have around 200 pounds of gear)
that's dope. Good to hear! I'll look out for it.
@@TinyBoatNation mind you there was just me the motor and no gear in the skiff
Brain tickler; I have a 2002 Alumacraft Trophy 185, while it is not a tiny boat, I’m still trying to figure out what kicker I want to run.
With me living in PA, 90% of the bodies of water I fish are 20hp max restricted. While my boat has a Yamaha F115 on it, I need a kicker to fish these lakes. I toss the idea around a 15hp or 20hp Mercury EFI, but in reality, what speed am I looking to get out of it? I know I probably won’t plane my boat with a 20hp, but compared to my old man’s 2020 Trophy 185 with a Yamaha 9.9HT, he’s getting 6mph tops… I’d like to get more than 6-7 mph. Maybe around 10-12mph with a 20hp?
I’m using this motor strictly for point A to point B travel, I’m not looking to troll with this motor, so I don’t have to get sub 1mph idle for trolling.
I love Yamaha outboards and they literally are a longer lasting engine. Quality all the way
@Konnor Sebastian no one gives a shit
@Landry London no it didn’t
The Name from the Boat ?
Trim Tabs?
Just wanted to clarify what you said about the propeller pitch. A small pitch helps with holeshot and acceleration while sacrificing top speed and vice versa as you go up in pitch. Did you say that for your application, the opposite is the case?
Yes a small pitch helps with holeshot, and a large pitch helps top speed. But In some cases, to high a pitch keeps a motor from reaching its power band... if you can't rev up to the recommended rpm, the motor won't put out the advertised horsepower.
“My” Suzuki 20 hp efi (2018-2019) pushes a boat of 280kg at 42.8km/h (rev limit)
All I could find was the Mercury 15 hp EFI and no power tilt
only half throttle for 20 hours?? Is that right? That must be hard to have to wait so long. I just bought a 2022 20 hp merc and it says half speed for one hour only and then 3/4 speed between 1 and 2 hours with occasionally giving it full speed for 1 minute at a time. Why would there be so much difference?
Tolerances might be tighter on the Yamaha and takes longer to ‘break in’. Mercs have slightly wider tolerances and allow the rings to get seated faster
I'm a clammer or shellfisherman from Ipswich, Massachusetts. I own both and hands down is Yamaha they're the complete package
Have you tried any of the 4 blades props.
Not on smaller motors, no
I have yamaha 6 hp and suzuki 9.9😁
Good info here. Thanks. Tried a Solas 4 blade Aluminum 11" pitch and wasn't impressed on a heavier 15.5 inflatable. Swapped to the 10" (approx) Yammy 3 blade and right on step. Really want to try the 9" pitch Yammy. Not going to spring for the very expensive Solas stainless 4 blades in 9 or 10". On an F25 BTW.
So a Yamaha 25 would be better for a 15’ Lund. It’s rated up to 35 but they don’t make those :(
Good-day is the 25hp to big for a 12" tiny?
I ran a Mercury 25hp for 10yrs after a 15hp Yamaha on my 13ft Alaskan. Yamaha was a turd and the Mercury ripped until it RIP’d. Have a 30hp Johnson now and it isn’t nearly as impressive as the Mercury. It might be rated for less but don’t think a 25 is to big. Asked a former Envinrude dealer and he said it’s ok. Just my 2 cents
What do you think about a mercury 25hp four stroke Big foot 03
the big foot gives you power trim and tilt with a different gear ratio. i have heard but cant confirm a non bigfoot lower will bolt right on. so if thats the case and you want the power trim and the price is right............
@@richardcranium5839 The one I got doesn’t offer tilt and trim not even electric start
Move all the weight u can forward it will heip
25hp Suzuki might be little heavier but it lot stronger than both of them. Its 3 cylinder instead of 2.
Take a 25 merc its also a 3cyl
Suzuki is the best in my opinion before and especially after evinrude went out of business. Yamaha has the lightest 25 hp though, I’ll give them that. A 2 stroke 25 or 15 Yamaha is a workhorse though
Suzuki also has 4 valves per cylinder.. and battery-less EFI.
@@gjhtheunissenjust buy a Tohatsu. Mercury are rebranded Tohatsu, so why pay extra for the name?
@@flamintasty The tiller handle and gears are different? I think.
Test a Suzuki next to see how it performs
Suzuki 25hp is a beast!
My friends suki lower shaft bearing went out and still under warranty but suki said they can't cover lower unit bearing
And also yes tohatsu makes mercury motors 50hp and lower in Japan.
Are you a Marine by chance?
My 1989 mercury 9.9 2 stroke runs 24mph
The best 20 hp thermal engine for a 4m long inflatable boat ? Thank you
Probably the Merc, or Suzuki
Your were on Rev limiter that's why it shuddered timing was interrupted
All that deck work, boats a tank.
Still undecided on a Yamaha 25hp or a merc 25hp for my decked 14/56 v-bottom!!? 😖🤔
