Great video! Amazing how old 240's still get a lot of attention. They are getting scarce and expensive here in California. Nowadays I could be on the road for several hours and not see even one. Most of them already died and went to heaven.
On the 240 Wagon/Estates, one of areas to pay attention to is the rear chassis rails, from the inside, and where they and the floor join - indeed all the chassis rails, particularly around the spring and shock mount areas. Apparently these are worse on an Estate than Saloon because this is an area of greater torsion in an Estate shell, rather than the Saloon which is better braced around the rear window. Also on the Estate, the lower section which the tailgate locks to inevitably needs replacing, though a repair panel is available.
While my 240 doesn't have much rust underneath or in the arches from what I've seen, I haven't done a proper and full teardown yet to search for them. this is a very handy guide on where to look!
Well that's a coincidence, just started treating a small area of rust today, ended up pulling a wing and front bumper off, bloody front of the chassis's toast! Also check door bottoms, that stupid rubber trim traps water real bad. Thanks for some great information dude🤘
Oh the endless fight. I usually go for Brunox rust inhibiting primer. It's thin enough that you can spot new rust early and deal with it. All the thicker stuff just seems to hide it until it's too late.
@@Involvod as far as I've understood it doesn't. I usually get it in black, which is perfect for underneath the car anyway imo. They're also known for rust converters with epoxy in them. Combining the two has yielded the most reliable results for me.
Hey mate. I have a 92 240, it's only rusting under the back window and in the back right door. Back window usually rusts cause the drain hoses get blocked.
That Owatrol look far better than Kurust! Great video fella - very interesting and the same applies in the main to the 700 series, although they love to rot in the footwells for some reason. Great music btw!
Yeah I've not been too impressed with rust "converters" to be honest, I find it converts the top layer but the rust carries on underneath and comes back through quite quick 😬
Thinking of all the rust that the red 240 wagon and the 740 that you had some friends make some Floorplan make out of a trunk "Whiteland restorations" that 240 does not have that much rust the people at Whiteland restorations are simply amazing especially with the 240 that they restored.
Greetings from North Carolina. Prices are up! $8-$12K for decent 240`s. I got lucky and bought a solid 91 240 for $3k. Pulled a small door dent and prepping car for factory color, dark blue metallic. Recently purchased two rusty late 80s 240s for parts. ($200 and $175) Rocker panels in one parts car are non existent from rust! As you say, tree trash trapped inside from front vent entry! I ran hose water into the front vent, caught water freely draining from rocker drains into pans, where tree crud was seen. I would like to glue fine window screen under the front air intake vent to stop trash entry, but not accessible?! I did that on a 80s Ford van, since the front cowl vent was removable. Cheers!
Seems like a nice product and I think Im gonna try it, but car's tend to rust inside out and if you dont get into those cavities, brushin some oil everywhere wont cut it.
"Seals the rust and stops it.. " Sadly, no, rust always grows, even when sealed. You can only slow it down a bit. The only way to stop rust completely, is sandblast every rust molecule off, and then seal it and paint it.. I know there are rust stoppers and converters, but basically, they're just slowing down the rust, which one does better than the other brand.
I remember my old flaxen yellow 88 wagon was packed full of grease’s and sealants in every seem to prevent rust before I bought it, sadly for the existence of Mercedes drivers that car was turned into a sandwich but I enjoyed driving it around.
Ah yes, the rust war.. I have 2 rustbuckets.. Just need a shop/garage and a welder.. but that's nearly impossible here. There is a lack of places you can rent cheaply.
So far so good but it's only been a few weeks, I'll do an update on it after winter. Motor oil works, makes working under the car a bit tricky though 😃
It's great to see people appreciating how good these cars were / are.
Thanks, glad you feel the same!

Things are really changing fast aren't they! I'm holding onto mine for dear life as there's a good chance I won't be able to afford another one
Omg! They are gorgeous! I love the Volvos. I fell for them when I was given a V70 estate. Great car!
I think that's what normally happens 😃

Ah I didn't know that about estate vs saloon, makes total sense and come to think of it I've only seen those holes on the wagons! Thanks

Thanks! Fingers crossed you don't find anything 🤞
Hopefully it's going to protect that beauty! Love how much effort you put into your work!
Me too🤞Thanks!

Ah damn, sorry to hear it mate!

I've heard of Brunox, by primer I assume it needs a top coat?

Every old car rusts. Only thing thats not rusty on an old car is the love of it😀
Haha very true!
Looks like a good product! Need to try it. Thanks for showing how it's done!
Very welcome! Let me know how you find it, I'm really impressed with it so far!
Hey mate. I have a 92 240, it's only rusting under the back window and in the back right door. Back window usually rusts cause the drain hoses get blocked.
Hey, thanks for the info! I forgot to mention the doors, I do actually have a couple crusty spots on mine too
Also check the drain hole at the underside of the doors. Sometimes you cant see rust on the outside because the trim is in it's way.
Good point! Thanks! 😃

Great content, why don't you use a little spray bottle? Like the ones sold in a garden centre
I didn't consider that, might be worth a try!

Thanks! 👍
Very good general guide, also true for most 740s
Thanks! Don't often do guides but dipped my toe into this topic so many times I thought it was about time to do it properly 😃
Owatrol do a plastic colour restorer - polytrol - which is excellent. I have done my 850 bumpers and they still look good after 18 months
Thanks, I heard about that stuff, definitely going to use it next on all the cars 👍 Had no idea it could last that long

Agreed!
Great stuff that oil treatment. Hope it will avoid the rust of that beautiful 240.
Thanks, me too 🤞

Just got a 93 244 auto! It’s really clean, but I’m keeping my eye out for a manual one! Love to see the 240 content!
Congrats on the purchase! I've never driven an auto 240 but I actually prefer the auto box in the 740, just fits the car well as a lazy cruiser 😃
Same! Good car! What color yours in?
@@Cryo_Gen gold, you?
Nice work. Great video
Thanks Johnny!

Well this is the other thing I worry about 😅
Hopefully not! But there are people out there that need a few driving lessons.
Ah yes, the rust war.. I have 2 rustbuckets.. Just need a shop/garage and a welder.. but that's nearly impossible here. There is a lack of places you can rent cheaply.
I know the feeling!!
Yesss rust is the main enemy so also: keep your beloved 240s away from salted winter roads.
Yes, definitely the best idea!
How has the owatrol oil worked? Friend of mine told me to put fresh motor oil as rust protection.
So far so good but it's only been a few weeks, I'll do an update on it after winter. Motor oil works, makes working under the car a bit tricky though 😃
Uuuuhhhh makes me wanna own a 240 again....
I don't know how you live without one after having one 😅 I hope you manage to find something!
Fluid film is the best
She apears to be in a pretty good shape
Yeah she's held up really well over the last 34 years, I think she was also probably garaged for a certain period
Where van i order a sticker?
Hey, they can be found on the Etsy store, I put a link in the description 🙂
Sounds like a great product Sledge, does it work on people - lol? BTW I managed to get rid of Fanny, was so easy. Wish I'd done it years ago.
Ah congrats! It's still a distinctive name so I won't forget who you are 😃
@@Involvod thanks. BTW that Humboldt in the photo.
