    Here is a simple rule change that can fix the flopping: once the QB RUNS PAST THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE he is now no different than a running back and should be treated as such.

    • @rice_frying_shrimp
      @rice_frying_shrimp 9 днів тому +26

      that's already what the rule is, that's just not how it's enforced. when the QB is a ball carrier past the line of scrimmage, he is a "runner", same as an RB or a TE/WR on a jet sweep style handoff. only difference is that roughing can still technically be called on those players but never is while it's called on QBs all the time. it's a consistency issue not a rule issue.

      15 yards does not make an 11 point difference (Chiefs gave them two points with the intentional safety). There were also several iffy calls and no calls that went the Texans' way but people only complain when it benefits the Chiefs because they're of their success and suffer from severe confirmation bias and Chiefs derangement syndrome.

      and that is the issue with the NFL now. They have designated QB's as non-hittable. The QB's and teams are using this rule to gain offensive superiority knowing the defense cannot hit or touch the QB in a normal football manor. If Josh Allen couldn't run without getting blasted would he be as good as he is? What about Jackson? The #1 way to stop opposing offenses was to get to the QB. That's been taken away.

    But the problem is that there are very clear differences in how officiating is handled quarterback to quarterback. It isn’t about player safety, Rich, because if it was there wouldn’t be such clear discrepancy. Mahomes plays into it, baiting players into penalties, and it’s disgraceful.

  • @bubba72205

    It blows my mind that the NHL officials review major penalties to see if they got it correct, and if they didn't, that correct the call before dropping the puck for the next play, yet the NFL won't do it for every personal foul penalty called. The NHL has made many changes in order to shorten their games, but when it comes to getting major penalties correct, they don't care if reviewing the penalty adds to the length of a game.
    The NFL needs to do this. Period.

      Great point. I love the way the NHL reviews major penalties. Even if it takes an extra minute or two, get the call right. It's crazy that it takes leagues so long to make these changes. I remember for years complaining that they should use technology to look at goals/non goals in the NHL with replay, and then they did it. Problem solved.

      I don't know ... I HATE lousy officiating -- especially when it reflects inconsistent "double standards" depending on the team(s) involved and/or chronically always "seems" to help one favored team over and over and over again. That said, having also been a high school football official in multiple different states earlier in life, I know full well that officiating is NOT "easy," nobody gets it "right 100& of the time" or "never makes a mistake," and the vast, vast majority of officials DO their best to be accurate, fair, and objective. That's at least my high school football officiating experience across multiple jurisdictions ... I'd like to think they are universal, but whether they actually are at the college and NFL/pro level is something I can't answer. Sadly, it's definitely true that greater economic pressures and influences that can compromise fair officiating exist at the college and NFL levels, where organized gambling involving LOTS of $$$$$ wagers runs rampant (indeed, the NFL has now even invited/sponsored professional gambling and sports books intoNFL stadiums!!!)
      But the above discussion aside, here are some necessary comments/observations necessary to the notion of "quick replay review" on "all 15 yard penalties:"
      1. You can't limit it just to 15 yard penalties -- SOME "mere" 5 yard penalties are virtually JUST AS impactful and pivotal to scoring and/or sustained drives as are 15 yard penalties (e.g., defensive holding as opposed to DPI still carries anb automatic 1st down and new set of downs)
      2. You also routinely need to include ALL turnover/not expected change of possession plays
      3. You also routinely need to include ALL questionable catches/incompletions where "bobbling," double "foot placement" in bounds, and/or "getting a body part down in bounds and under control are at issue (e.g., sideline and end of end zone passes)
      4. When you add ALL these new MANDATORY review situations, it WILL slow the game down ...
      5. And #4 above willhave the additional potentially "unfair adverse impact" of slowing down a hurry-up no-huddle offense and providing an advantage to the defense.
      In short, there are no perfect "solutions" other than to make NFL officiating a well-paid FULL TIME PROFESSION where those guys work their craft mostly all year long (including extensive review sessions) so that the game officials get SO GOOD that there are significantly fewer situations calling for review, and many fewer mistake reversals when review does occur. That new level of excellence will itself further breed greater trust and confidence in the officiating by players, coaches, and fans alike.

    • @kokoken1
      @kokoken1 11 днів тому +1

      OK, look at the rules/officiating items up for consideration in the off-season: 1. Do we review all flagged fouls with 15-yard penalties? (It should be pointed out that in the UFL spring league, Mike Pereira is empowered to negate a personal foul flag.) 2. Do we allow replay to flag a face mask foul that was missed? 3. How did the dynamic kickoff go? Do we keep it, modify it or dump it? 4. Onside kick: Is it time to replace it with a 4th-and-15 (or other yardage) play? What I'd like to see replace it is an untimed down, an "extra point" from the 15-yard line. If successful, the ball goes back to the 50, and the clock starts with the snap. If unsuccessful, the defense gets the ball at the 30. (If the defense gets possession, the "try" is over; no runback for points.)

This is all good and well, you could just chalk it up to players and fans upset they lost but when everyone is saying the same thing over and over and over and over again that stops being a coincidence. This problem was fixed years ago in the USFL and now also in the UFL. Every single play is watched by an official in the booth and they review each penalty that is called. The on field refs and the ref in the booth are on open mics and those fans in the stands and watching on TV can ALL hear what the refs are saying. The head ref on the field almost always gets confirmation from the chief official in the booth. There are two officials that trade off in watching the UFL games and one of them is none other than Mike Pereira. He's a former NFL ref, served as the Vice President of officiating for the NFL and is currently the head of officiating in the UFL. It was him that Aikman consulted about the bogus penalties and he said those flags should have been picked up. In the UFL Pereira would have told the on field refs to pick both of those flags up.
    With the open mics and the booth overwatch, the UFL goes out of its way to make the games clean and fair, but sometimes the refs on the field and the ref in the booth miss something and the coaches on the sidelines have a super challenge they can make at any time for anything, even for an infraction the refs failed to call. So if an offensive lineman moves or sets up too far back off the line and it doesn't get called, (a problem KC's right offensive tackle is guilty off frequently and often isn't called), the coach can throw his red flag and challenge that there was an infraction they didn't call. The guy in the booth reviews the play and if he sees the coach was right, the penalty is then called and marched off. The coach with a successful challenge gets to keep his challenge. The challenge can be made only if the team has a time out. A failed challenge costs a timeout and the team gets no more challenges.
    I'm a huge fan of the Spring league. It reminds me of football back in the 70s when players didn't get $50 million a year and played for the love of the game, when tickets were affordable for the blue collar worker and his family.
    I stopped counting at SIX the times the refs made key calls in the waning moments of the 4th quarter that helped Mahomes' and the Chiefs keep a last drive alive and win the game. 1 time, even 2 is understandable but when it is six and counting, that's not human error anymore. That's deliberate game fixing. With the NFL gambling crap being pushed, there is too much room for game fixing. The NFL has become the WWE. The Chiefs should have had at least a 10-7 or even a 9-8 record, NOT a 15-1 regular season record if the UFL officiating procedures were in play in the NFL. Now with the playoff win over Houston, the Chiefs have at least 7 cheap, cheating victories thanks to refs fixing the games. Mark my words, the Chiefs will beat the Bills and the refs will have a hand in it so that Goodell can have the Chiefs and the Swifties in the Superbowl. I'm disgusted by what has happened to the NFL. The NFL has lost me as a fan.
    Bring on the UFL!!!! The new season is coming soon!

    I think that ANY penalty that results in a new set of downs should be subject to replay assist. Because a new set of downs could change the outcome of a game significantly. Obviously that's a pretty significant change, so they could start getting used to it by only implementing it in the final 2 minute warning period of a game. At least if the refs knew there was going to be a replay assist, they'd be less eager to throw a flag unless they were absolutely sure of what they saw.
