The Dunsterforce was a small British military mission under Colonel Dunsterville. Its goal was to prevent the spread of German influence in the South Caucasus and Caspian Sea. The soldiers soon find themselves in the complicated and violent post-revolutionary Caucasus where no one can really be trusted.

Ladies and gentlemen, we can say from today that this war will be over by next Christmas, and it will be true!
Lol finally
V. Athanasiou you're so brave to make such a prognostication!
;-)
But the Versailles Treaty was not signed until June of 1919. So technicially the war was not over only a cease fire
I heard that year ago,we won't get fooled again.
Yeah that's what they told us in '14 too. Keep on dreaming.
"The Adventures of Dunsterforce" sounds like a bad Chevy Chase movie.
Isn't 'bad' assumed when it's a Chevy Chase movie?
Don't give Chevy Chase ideas!
True, Great actor Chevy Chase
At first I heard Dumpsterforce.
Yaldabaoth Dumpsterforce sounds like a hobo special forces unit.
My name is Barren Alley and I'm the poorest man alive. I was trapped inside the Dumpsterforce, and when I got out the war was still going on. I am the Foch.
I had NEVER heard of this little campaign. Thank you, once again, for revealing yet another arcane aspect of the Great War.
This story sounds like it would make one heck of a movie!
This part of the war is the most interesting to me I think, all the intrigue and revolution going on in that area of the world made it very volatile
It is the least known part of ww1, too.
4:26 that Russian soldier may have been uneducated but he was a long way from poorly spoken. I'd go so far as to call his statement eloquent.
being conscious of the fact you do not know things is the first step to in educating yourself
Kerry L More important is the self-awareness itself.
True they were uneducated, but they loved to sicuss things and smarted themselves through conversations
The surprising level wisdom in his words from someone completely illiterate was probably exactly why it was recorded down.
I was told the war would be over by Christmas.
Merry Christmas Indy, Flo and crew.
Little Jenny Well it's 3 years late
When ever someone says that the war will be over by Christmas, remember to ask them to be more specific as to which one.
No there’s kaiserslacht the last german operation
That's where I failed. ;)
It wasn't really over until Christmas 1945. There was a 20 year armistice between The Great War part 1 and The Great War part 2.
Very interesting! The young Dunster was the model for Rudyard Kipling's 'Stalky'. When I was at primary school in the 1950s. I was madly in love 😄 with a girl whose mother was Dunster's daughter (and my 'girlfriend's' father was one of the few successful escapees from Colditz in WW2), but, alas, I didn't get to hear anything about Dunster other than the above.
Kenneth Garland
Now,that you have a girlfriend who’s grandfather is one of the allies, now get a central power side chick,we want a new world war.
Sorry,if I offended you or her.
wow wow wow! Sounds amazing! Thank you for sharing, in my young ages I was madly in love with stalky himself after reading kipling's book. That really influenced all my live - I know a great deal about Dunsterville, Kipling and Beresford - those two friends from the book and now I'm Kipling's translator in russia (Russian is my native language)
If the British paid the Cossack loyalist force for combat operations did that not make them mercenaries?
I remember that the question about the use of mercenaries came up once in the Chair ov Wisdom.
Merry Christmas! Time to go home right? Right?
This is getting out of hand
Just give me 48 hours and some Calvary
I'd really like to see Indy appearing in the UA-cam rewind. Kinda gives the history buffs of youtube some representation...
Wait, the war is supposed to be over by now
They never said which Christmas
Janos Jalics some deep stuff
So Darth Guilder is correct, 1918 is before 2017, correct?
Would be nice to have a video on the war years in Persia, I know there was the Out of the Trenches one, but it seems the situation was a lot more complicated than mentioned there. And the resources online for this topic aren't great... even though the historic implications of Russian/British meddling in the Constitutional Revolution from 1911 and during and after WW1 form the start of a series of events that culminated in the 1979 Islamic Revolution and the deep rooted fears of Western interference that characterizes Iranian politics to this day.
The resources offline aren't great either. At least in English.
“Well, the war wasn’t over by Christmas...”
Teutonic Bohemian Again
Great episode ! As a Middle-Easterner I learned from this special episode that the (not so) great famines were much more spread in the Middle-East than I previously thought it only hit Syria and Lebanon...
This would make an amazing TV series. The story of Dunsterforce, I mean.
Anytime Indy covers the history of this region I get confused. I am forced to watch the episode a few times. That's not a problem, but this region and the names are so new to me. Great show! I happy to be a patreon supporter.
Merry Christmas, watch The Great War everybody
These British officers must have been real daredevils, wouldn`t even think of driving around these parts of the world in a tank. Happy Xmas from Scandinavia.
Merry Christmas to you as well Mein Freund! It's almost a Year Later!
"No, no, no spoilers, you'll just have to check it out for yourself" That was pretty funny, I actually laughed out loud in front of my monitor!
I was really surprised by this. Knew nothing about Dunsterforce, Iran being on the verge of communism or this choatic state of the Caucasus front at this stage of the war. WWI keeps surprising. So glad you guys are here to show me interesting, obscure and important stuff like this
7:15 The truth about all revolutions
*Orange Kayak*
That is absolutely true.
All *socialist revolutions
The American revolution was individualist sacrifice
Yeah, I'll sure mention that to the countrysides that Washington's army plundered for supplies and did so frequently enough that there was almost a separate uprising against them, not to mention the intended Army coup in 1783 over bad conditions, lack of pay, and pensions that were promised (the Newburgh Conspiracy).
Well yeah when one army guy plunders a goat or two to eat from the countryside farmer .sure it got them annoyed but nowhere near as bad as the socialist revolutions who would take more than a goat.
It takes a lot more than a goat or two to feed an Army for 8 years
Finally an episode about the Persian front! Thanks Indy and crew. I hope you can one day make a special episode about the Persian front in general. Oh, and merry Christmas.
I appreciate this great video it was so interesting to me since I am from northern Iran(city of Rasht province of Gilan) that Koochek khan movement took place there, I rely enjoyed.
Hold on...
Is this not the last Christmas special?
Jona Willekens rip

I'm going to need to watch this one a few times, I think
Merry Christmas!

Out of all of the fantastic names that have arisen from this war, Dunsterforce is definitely the best.
Great video! Would have appreciated more detail about which Dominions the Dunsterforce troops came from (since I'm Canadian).
Merry Christmas TO
The Great War TIME
Great eprode, Indy. Why don't you do one on the Indian Expeditionary force A on the Western Front in 1914-1915? Indians effectively held 1/3ed of the British line during this time, while the British trained the Kitchener armies. If you want to pursue this, please contact me
Never heard this tale before.
Happy holidays to you all
Is it anything like dumpster diving? Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to Indy , Flo and the entire crew

"The Adventures of Dunsterforce."
That's a movie title begging to be made right there.
Great video! Where can I get a map of the world during the war like the one shown at 0:57?
You have got to allow us to buy the music you use in the background of your videos. Been wanting them since 1914
This sounds like a thrilling story for a movie.
Could be a great film!
Awesome Christmas special, when will part to be posted
Happy New Year to all.
This is a bit like another Lawrence of Arabia
Lionel of Persia
i learn something new again
@TheGreatWar will you guys be doing specials are the political and fighting action of the Russian Civil War and the adventures of the Czech Legions pre and post 1918?
Merry Christmas to everyone at "The Great War".
4:56 *Freaking gucci gang*
Lovely episode as always The Great War. Flo, I dono if you're in the comments but uh, Merry Christmas to you and the team. :D Can't wait for the shocking conclusion in 2018.
merry Christmas

The war will really be over by next christmas I promiss.
michael Blasphemy!!!!
Such a great stoty
The doodads on Indy's desk keep changing position from week to week. I see that what appears to be a new rock, well probably not a new rock since most rocks are very old but I digress. A rock of undetermined age has been added to the accruments that usually reside on said desk. Hmmm, what does it all mean???
Take care
Edward J. Lemon (2015) "Dunsterforce or Dunsterfarce? Re-evaluating the British mission to Baku, 1918," First World War Studies, vol. 6, no. 2, pp. 133-149.
Can u please make a video about the 369th infantry regiment "Harlem Hellfighters" ? I believe that it would be a great video and that it needs more recognition. Because not many videos are made about them. Thanks!
Great video btw .
Love Indie’s voice
This all sounds like quite the situation...
will there be a dvd collection of this channel?
Ward Vermassen I hope so.
