Michters straight rye was my introduction into ryes and I absolutely love it.
I think for bourbon lovers Rare breed rye makes sense because it is barely rye, high proof and just yummy
I might have to try this!
Came here to say the same thing 👌
This!
Either that or Sazarac Rye. Its 51% rye i think? Really smooth and balanced, doesnt quite go into dill territory, but some really good flavors
This is the one.
As a followup, any High West Double Rye store pick. All the store picks are finished in something. My favorite finishes for Double Rye is Pinot de Charente and Rum Cask.
You find those, you'll be hooked.
Sagamore Spirit Double Oaked - it’s a nice Maryland style Rye that’s not too spicy and not too strong. The same distillery also offers a more vanilla-y lower proof alternative (Signature) and a Cask strength bottle!
Old overholt rye is my go to cheap American whisky sipper and mixer. It is very "smooth" and versatile for its price point. Blind taste it near some whisky double its price and it will beat it.
I learned about Old Overholt from a Lawrence Block book: The Burglar in the Rye. First one I tried was Dickel's, but once I found the Overholt I was hooked. Haven't looked back.
Try angels envy rye .. by far one of the strangest and complex .. definitely worth a review
High West….. I’m a 40 yr old child. Lol. I just love that bite rye gives you sometimes.
He has a couple of Midwinter Night's Dram from High West already up there.
Im have the last of my double rye highwest rn
It's a bought sourced whiskey..you can do better
@@KA-om9ozThat doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not good, especially when you can get it in the low $40 range. There are better ryes, but it’s not bad at all, and cheap enough that you don’t feel like it’s wasted in a cocktail. It’s probably my favorite rye for a sazerac.
Barrell Seagrass!!! It’s so good and gives me strong green apple hints
I’ve enjoyed it quite a bit too, but then again, I’m a rue guy anyways
The 16 year old is incredible.
Knob Creek Rye Single Barrel - best bourbon lover's rye. It's almost like a bourye with a lot of caramel to it.
It’s awesome. He needs to review it. 115 proof
Angels Envy Rye is awesome when making an old fashion. Also I prefer it on the rocks. For me anything Angels Envy is my go to.
Angels envy rye finished in Rum casks!!!
Elijah Craig rye. Got that nice peppery rye flavor but finishes on a nice surprisingly sweet note that complements the peppery notes perfectly
@Brewzle honestly man why not take the rye counterpart from your two or three favorite bourbons? If those expressions do something special for you, check out how those distillers make the spice flow. Also brother, getting into rye via your favorite cocktail worked for me (Manhattan especially). Set yourself up for success.
A Peerless Manhattan served up is my top suggestion.
Pikesville rye is so good!?
Thank god i have one pikesville reserve in collection
Drinkin on some of that tonight tryna find good reviews. I like it a lot but my buddies ain’t crazy ab it
@@Joeybiaz8040best rye I have had for $50
Sagamore Spirits Double Oak Rye. Best whiskey out there across the board right now for the price
Pikesville 110 proof rye, Old Forester rye , knob creek small batch rye , pursuit united rye.
Old Forester Rye is the best!! 100 Proof, it’s a dark rye which gives it a more bourbon-like flavor profile, and it’s cheap as hell
I think the reason many bourbon drinkers like ANGEL'S ENVY (RYE) is probably due to the rum cask finish, lends sweeter notes to the rye
Highly recommend trying a bottle of Stauning if you can find it. It's a danish whisky. They exclusively use rye, so they're far more serious about their distilling experiments and making something tasty for the market.
Pikesville is my jam all day long
Some others you might want to try are Journeyman Last Feather Rye and Chattanooga Whiskey 99 Rye. Also, one of my favorite ones that's local to me is the Epoch Rye from the Baltimore Distillery Co but I have a feeling it would be almost impossible to find outside of the Maryland area.
EHT straight rye. Best bottle I own and I'm mostly a bourbon guy.
Nice find!
If you’re in MN, Studio Distilling Rye (notes of coffee, chocolate & a hint of smoke), Roknar Maryland Style Rye are my top 2. Sagamore Double Oak Rye is up there too.
Whistle Pig Farmstock Rye is amazing and complex you will fall in love
Aren't those bottles super expensive now, because the originator of WP died?
@@A_Little_Piece_Of_Music yeah on secondary market but you can still find it for the original 150 that it sold
Old Ezra Full Proof is a Rye, that tase sweet and grape jammy flavored. I dont normally enjoy ryes, but this is by far the best Ive ever had.
Basil Hayden Dark rye for sure!!! Pikeville is also an excellent choice for the price.
Iowa Legendary Rye is one of one. No chemicals, 3 gallon batch, and the recipe was Al Capone's favorite. A bourbon drinkers favorite rye
Rye was the original way they made old fashioned back in the day, so the legend goes. I like Ryes at times over other whiskies and bourbons It has that spice and kick that I love. My favorite which is actually a blend of Rye, scotch and bourbon is Campfire by high west. However theres many good distilleries that provide a similar flavor profile to that of ryes. . My personal favorite is Garrisons' small batch. It makes amazing uniquely flavored old fashioneds ❤
Off-the-shelf easy to find and amazing…… Sagamore Double Oak Rye
Pikesville can’t be beat
I agree. Sagamore is putting out great offerings. Double oak or cask strength are my favorite
Same here, never really found good rye. Picked up a bottle of whisling pig farmstock beyond bonded and really enjoyed it. I felt like it had one of the longest flavor profiles I've gotten out of a rye. I would have to pull out the bottle to give a description of the flavor profile. Can't say I drink much rye so bigger rye drinkers may disagree with me but I like it.
My number one bottle on my channel. Old Carter Rye Batch 14. Bourbon drinkers Rye. It’s special. Best bottle. Marshmallow, dark fruits, baking spices, mint all blended in brown sugar and honey. It’s ridiculous. Just drove five hours to get another one so I have another to hold onto for a while
Angels Envy Rye. Always passed on AE in general, but recently had it and it is a pure butterscotch bomb. Very unique. Extremely delicious
Old Forester was my first rye that I liked a lot and still a favorite of mine.
Luckenbach road straight rye whiskey
It is a Texas hill country distillery
I absolutely love it
Their straight bourbon is one of my favorites but their rye is better than most bourbons in my opinion
I'm also not a rye fan. I've had good ones. I don't mind them at all, but none have blown me away. Even things like Pikesville (which is supposed to be a good rye for bourbon drinkers) didn't blow me away. The closest one was Thomas H. Handy but even that I didn't like as much as some bourbons I've had. The closest one I remember being surprised at how much I liked it was High West Double Rye and I was very surprised by that - but I also haven't had it in like 8 years and definitely not since I've started getting into whiskey ore seriously. (It is great in cocktails though.)
You could try angels envy, rye but if you really not a fan of rye I would be more than happy to take that midwinter‘s night dram off your hand😅
basil hayden dark rye is what got me into sippin whiskey
I love Knob Creek and Michters Ryes. I am also a bourbon person!
Just picked up a bottle of Sazerac Rye. First bottle of rye I've ever bought. I loved it. 🤷♂️
Old Ezra Rye Cask Strength is amazing.
Kentucky Owl Rye Batch 1 or 2 are expensive but incredible as well.
New Riff Rye and Willett small batch are a couple decent examples.
A lot of people seem to buy rye an can't figure out why it doesn't taste like bourbon.
It's like buying mezcal and wondering why it isn't sweet like tequila.
There's no shame in not liking rye and I can see much point in trying to pretend to like it with those barely legal ones.
I'm not a big fan of Jack, but if you are, then check out the JD rye. It has that classic JD vibe but with the rye twist.
Willit rye
Bullet rye
Woodford reserve rye
are all great options
thanks for the suggestions!
Smooth Ambler Old Scout Single Barrel Cask Strength Rye is one that's exceptional, I'm not a fan of rye, but love it.
I know this is an old video, but in case you're still looking. 😂
I love bourbon and I also love Pendleton. You might try that. Midnight is fuller and less aggressive
I’ve always been a single barrel straight rye lover. You already enjoy Michters, their single barrel green label is one of my favorites.
Jack Daniel’s Bonded rye is great for bourbon lovers. And I’ve heard anything sagamore spirits like the double oaked and the sherry or port finished are great. I’m sure you’ve tried some by now since posting this.
Bulleit and Knob Creek rye are great, especially in an old fashion.
These 2 are my favorites.
Bulleit rye is my go-to for a Manhattan
Roundstone Rye (Cask Proof) by Catoctin Creek Distilling is my absolute favorite. They have a bottled-in-bond as well that I haven’t had a chance to try yet, though.
Harder to find but you already know. I love E.H. Taylor straight rye and just stopped by the Michters distillery and picked up a 10 year rye because my original bottle is almost empty. If your in Central Indiana I'd happily share a pour of each with you. 👊
Pikesville !!!
Redwood empire emerald giant is a really tasty rye. That’s the one that got me hooked.
I picked up a bottle of leopold brothers 3 chamber rye. Expensive, but man, if you want to taste what rye could be, what it use to be before prohibition, then thats the one to try
Sagamore Double Oak, Redwood Empire- Emerald Giant, and WhistlePig 10 year all taste really good to me.
The 6 yr whistlepig was my first rye and I liked it a lot. I like spice
Old Forester 100 Rye introduced me to Rye. For the price point, and the actual product, i don’t see a better option! But please prove me wrong. I want to try all the whiskys😈
I’ve not dabbled much into the rue whiskeys, but I love a good whiskey sour and to this day, the best whiskey sour I’ve had was made with George Dickel Rye
Sagamore double oaked. It’s the bourbon lovers rye. And great introductory to ryes
Probably not a crowd favorite, but pendleton rye is pretty good
Try RedWood Pipe Dream. It will get you hooked for sure!. They also make Pipe Dreams Cast Strength
I've made it my #1 top bourbon.
It's delicious 😋
High West Double Rye and Sagamore Double Oak Rye are my 2 favorites.
HW double rye is fantastic
Agreed. High west is the way to go
Nice choices I enjoy both.
Very old Saint Nick summer rye lot 21. Ezra brooks 7 yr. Parker’s heritage . Got plenty when u coming back to columbus
Heard some great things about Sazerac Rye from the Bufflo Distillery. Just bought my first bottle. I'm also a bourbon man.
Brewzel find yourself a 100% rye aged super long. I recently had a single barrel that blew me away from Balum Brothers out of Galena IL. They made 8 year 100% rye that was placed in a char1 toasted barrel that was smoked with Applewood with a finished ABV of 136. It was simply amazing had so many great bourbon qualities. The rye is from a local grain farmed locally. I’d say look for the craft distilleries instead of the main stream choices. Balum changed my perspective on what a great rye could taste like. Their flagship rye isn’t aged as long but is the same base juice as the one I had.
New Riff Rye. I’m more a wine drinker and I love it. Bottled in Bond, and it tastes like liquid s’mores. I want some tonight.
Well, I'm very late to the party, but in my experience, if you want to put bourbon guys onto rye, you just add sugar. 😂
In all seriousness, my favorite rye I've ever tried is Castle & Key Restoration. Two fingers, ice it like scotch and find a good cigar with a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper.
Whistlepig piggyback Alfa Romeo single barrel
Aged in an oolong tea barrel. Thin viscosity with a sweet tea finish.
I’m a fan of high rye.. pretty new at whiskeys, trying to find a great one under $75 dollar range
I’m a big fan of Woodford Reserve rye!
I definitely agree! I have a Woodford Reserve Rye store pick that is phenomenal.
My go to bottle
My favorite was Willett’s rye with the green top (think I saw it in your collection.) until I tried Boone County’s single barrel cask strength rye (5 year, MGP juice). Though I should say I’m still relatively new to rye, but those are solid choices in my book.
Love the JD Bonded Rye
Michters toasted rye or 10 year rye always a banger.
Sagamore Spirit Rye - Calvados finish. It was like a gateway drug - but that was a few years ago now. Plus, I was a fan of rye before bourbon - back when a massive store like Specs in Houston might have two brands of rye in the entire store (on purpose)… one being an $18 Jim Beam😞
i live in upstate new york, the finger lakes area. we have McKenzie single barrel straight rye whiskey up here at our local winery, i dont like rye whiskey, but it is very very gooooood
Old Forester 100 proof Rye is so good! I highly recommend it.
I just opened a single barrel rye from Starlight last night and it was delicious
Roknar Maryland Style Rye is really solid. Based on ole George Washington’s original recipe
Michters Toasted Barrel Rye 2023 baby!!!
OF Rye, especially if you can find a SBBS. I’m also really digging a Far North Spirits Roknar barrel strength store pick 👌
This is a good recommendation I think but mostly because the OF rye tastes pretty bourbon-y for some reason. Has a lot of cherry flavor which I normally associate with rye and very little of the herbs or spice.
Smoke Wagon Blender's Select Straight Rye Whiskey.
I hate rye, but this one is really good. Right up there with Barrel Seagrass IMO.
You already have the best rye right in front of you, Willett green top rye. Spearmint and bubble gum on the palate.
Sagamore rye mainly double oak and sherry finished
I hear that Shortbarrel JRock Rye is pretty nice! lol
Looking for something close to that and have found one that comes close to age and mash bill. That would be Wheel Horse. Now I just need to find a bottle and try it.
Rare Breed Rye and if you can get it Michters toasted barrel strength rye. Good stuff.
Pikesville, Rare Breed Rye, JDSBBPR, Sagamore DO Rye & 8yr, Middle West Pumpernickel Rye
Very Old Barton 10 yr Cask Strength. Should be in the 100$ range and you’ll love it.
Pendleton is pretty good. It’s lower on the price side but it’s I like it.
Filibusters Boondoggler is a great Rye / Bourbon blend. I truly enjoy it as a sipper.
I second this suggestion!
I'll look it up!
@@Brewzle let me know what you think. We got it shipped to OK about 35.00 a bottle
There’s an Iowa made White Rye and that turned me from a Irish or Canadian whiskey guy to a “rye guy”, Iowa Legendary White Rye. Highly recommend and hope you enjoy as well!
I'm from Iowa I'll have to try that out of respect for my local community!
Sagamore Sherry Finish. Boom.
Redemption Rye and Pikesville straight Rye Whiskey..... I enjoy my Rye's with an large ice cube
Nashville Barrel Co has a 10yr birthday bottle or SiB 9yr. Four Gate Batch 16 Rye Downunder is incredible. Sagamore Double Oak should be on any Bourbon lovers bar. Good aged ryes have deep Dr Pepper notes instead of the grass spice.
Blue Rye Kentucky Straigth Rye! It’ll blow your mind
That sounds good!
@@Brewzle let me know when you try it! I'd love to hear your thoughts
Whistle pig "Piggyback" 100% rye is my favorite
Jack SBBP rye is mighty fine. A Pick if you can find one.
The jack daniels single barrel ryes have all been delicious, my favorite is Taylor rye but that has been hard to get
Old Saint Nick is pretty good bit pricey but I think it’s worth it
A very affordable and good for it's price is Templeton Rye.
Fun fact. Templeton Rye was the preferred whiskey of "Scarface" Al Capone.
I recommend starting with a BouRye. Redwood Empire has one called Lost Monarch. And it's dang delicious. To me it's like drinking a caramel apple. I get caramel and vanilla up front from the bourbon. And an apple finish from the rye.
I'm a big Crown person -- everyone knows of the standard stuff, but I highly recommend the Crown Royal XO if you want something a more flavour-complex.
Canada is different - it only requires 1% to be a “Canadian rye” - it will be 3 years old, and at least 90.91% 3 year old spirit
East coast wise, Last Straw in Vaughn are the keepers of the good stuff in Rye.
Catoctin Creek Roundstone is a must try
Any rye from Nashville barrel co- all of their stuff is crazy good
