Hello from Kyiv Ukraine. If someone said to me that they are entering the Sony eco system with the A7III and asked me to recommend some lenses I would say 55mm F1.8 Sony Zeiss, 35mm F1.8 Sony and the 85mm F1.8 Sony as primes. For zooms I would recommend the 3 Tamron lenses 17 to 28, 28 to 75 and 70 to 180mm F2.8. With these 6 lenses they could cover almost everything in photography and video. By the way I have not noticed any loss of weight.
Great recommendations
I totally agree with this statement...
55 1.8 is definitly one of my favorites. light, super sharp, great colors. kick ass lense
I just switched to Sony this week because of your channel and some others. My fist lens is the Sony 85mm f1.8 and I’ve been trying to decide what’s next from there. Appreciate the bud, keep the dope content going
Manny you have the best music of all these photography channels. Love it!
would be cool to get monthly playlists from Manny ^^
He gets his music from Epidemic Sound. Alot of UA-camrs use their music.
7:39 Amen to that Sony 85mm f/1.8. I love it. It's worth every penny and more.
That shadow on the wall, from the windows, at 1:45 was absolutely GOLDEN for a portrait shot!!
55mm was also my first lens and I find it hard to sell off no matter how hard i try... it's small, light and really gives portraits a nice dramatic look with its unique vignetting. It also comes in clutch when i'm in a somewhat tight area to shoot in. Mainly shoot with the 85mm or 135mm G masters. the 55mm ALWAYS stays in my bag, will never know when you'll need it.
Smart man
I know you wrote this a year ago but that 55 Zeiss is one the best primes ever. Small, sharp and no-nonsense. I will only sell mine if there's an exceptional reason to leave Sony cameras.
Love my 55mm 1.8. First lens I ever bought and would never sell
You are right AND that lens scored a high DXOMARK of 48!!!!!!
Here in 2022, just got the 55mm and I'm really excited to go out and shoot some street photography with it. I had a 28-70mm paired with the sony 85mm 1.8 but never used the 28-40 range of the zoom so I decided to swap it for the 55. VERY EXCITED!
That 55 1.8 is amazing. It's on my camera about 2/3 of the time when I'm shooting any kind of portrait session. It's a beautiful combo of a "standard" portrait lens, but it also provides a wide enough angle to provide an environmental look. It just has a different enough look from a 50 to make it feel a bit special, and the size/weight is a HUGE advantage over other great 50's. You can find them secondhand for about $750, but I don't think I'll ever ever, get rid of mine. It's my favorite lens in my lineup next to the 24 1.4 GM.
The Zeiss 55 1.8 is so dope. It’s extremely sharp, super fast focusing, compact, and has a slight hint of that “zeiss 3D look”. I also have the Sony 85 1.8 and that is a great cheaper alternative to the Batis 85 1.8 since they are nearly identical in image quality. Will save you a good $400-500
Zeiss 55 1.8 is my all time favourite lens, do you have any experience with the 35mm 1.8?
Same, I have both the 55mm 1.8 and the 85mm 1.8, and they’re both amazing lenses. Super sharp, solid autofocus, and pleasing bokeh. The 55mm does have a strange tendency to open up the aperture slightly when focusing, which changes the bokeh for a moment. It also has some noise when half pressing the shutter (this is caused by the aperture ring opening, and it’s present in all 55 1.8 lenses I’ve tested, including brand new ones). It’s only present in photography mode though, and it’s completely silent in video mode. It’s a peculiar thing that I haven’t seen before, but it doesn’t bother me at all, and it’s a solid lens nonetheless.
0:23 Melissa can use the Canon EOS R5 to light her cigarette.

This one 😂
the 55mm 1.8 was my first lens too! coming from a Canon 60D and the Canon 50mm 1.8, this lens is on a whole different class. Extremely sharp. built like a soldier
Just purchased the a7iii. I am excited! Time to get started 🙌🏽
I bought that 55 1.8 with my a6300 quite a few years back. I believe the 55 had just came out. I only heard people say the 50mm 1.8 was “just as good” and the 55 was overpriced due to the blue badge and wasn’t any better. Then it started to gain a lot of attention like 4 years ago. Now it’s like everyone’s favorite lens haha. I always liked it but now that I now a lot more about glass I realize how awesome of a lens it is. That’s why you never listen to people in forums. You have no idea if they even know what they’re talking about. The majority of those people only look at center sharpness and price.
I have all the Sony lenses and will never sell my 55 as its so compact and sharp. Best lens for Sony.
Looking good Manny. Don’t let the weight comments get to you. 👍
same here, it practically lives on my camera :)
55mm Zeiss. My favorite lens ever. Period. Proud owner of the 2.8 GMaster 70-200 and my position still stands.
I'm an owner of the Sony Zeiss 55mm 1.8 myself, and you're absolutely right! Still one of the sharpest lenses out there and it's been years since it was made. My go-to lens each and everytime.
i have used 55mm 1.8 one time while i borrowed frm my frnd..its awesome in its price..i fall in love with this lens..i am in plan to purchase after covid19 is over
55 could be a religion! compact, sharp, silent (for videos) , fast af, solid (metal) , Zeiss built in Thailand but still Zeiss quality. Thank you bro for sharing your work!
I bought the Sigma 50mm 1.4 and, even though the image quality was insane, I couldn't get used to the size and weight. Sold it and bought the 55 1.8. Still an amazing lens, but with the perfect form factor in my opinion.
Zeiss 55 1.8 is sick. Sharpness, colors, contrast and bokeh are great. On top of all that it’s so small! For portraits I go back and forth between Zeiss 55 and Sony 85mm 1.8
I just started photography and Sony 55mm is my first lens, previously I was considering Sony 50mm but then I went to store tried both the lenses and Sony 55mm is far far far better than the Sony 50mm. In my opinion the price difference is huge but it's all worth it. It's the sharpest lens I have ever seen. Totally recommend it 😃
I’ve been using my Sony 85mm 1.8 and my sigma 35mm 1.4. Best two portrait lenses I chose to only buy so far! Eventually I’ll get the tamron 70-180 I think and be set!
perfect. I just got the Sony 35mm 1,8 because I'll be using it both for video and photography. And now I'm thinking I should get the old but still awesome by the sound of your review Sony 55mm 1,8 as my next lens. :)
I bought the 55mm 1.8 last year and still enjoying the it's sharpness. It's also good for videos and gimbal action. A must buy!
I actually just got the 55 1.8 yesterday. My first little lens besides my Gm 24. But I love it already.
same boat, i love it more than the 24gm! prefer that focal length
I have the 35mm f1.8 on my a7iii 95% of the time but have used my 55mm f1.8 a handful of times and love it! Super crispy!
I bought the 55 1.8 for $550 and is one of my favorites. Love the color redemption, 3D effect, contrast, sharpness, size weight ..
You convinced me to purchase all 3 of these lenses 😳❤️❤️❤️🤌🏼🥺✌🏼😁
the Zeiss 55mm is also the lens that i have used for the longest time. it has been with me since the very beginning
55 1.8 it’s almost fixed in my camera. It’s just amazing, great video I got the 85 1.8 also, just fantastic. Cheers🙏🏼
You are so right Manny.
The Sony Zeiss 55mm f1.8 is soooo good.It is also my favorite I will never sell.
Fully agreed!! Have 55 1.8 too. Have used a few of the others. All things considered, one of ma favs! Would never disappoint you.
I love my 55mm F1.8. it's so much easier to carry around when doing portraits !
Zeiss 55mm 1.8 is my favorite lens in my kit. It has a special look to it that is just absolutely beautiful. It's also small, lightweight, has excellent build quality, and I'll basically never sell it. It's taken some of my favorite shots so far so it has a special place in my collection.
The 55 was the lens first in the cart with my A7R3. Next was the 85 1.8. Love them both.
Manny, you’re the man! You’re my favorite UA-camr! Not sure why anybody would be commenting on your luxe, you look great! Not as good as your wife! But you look good, lol. The 55 mm was one of my first Sony lenses also. I’ve actually bought this lens twice. I sold my first copy and regretted it. Then bought it again. Keep up the great work!
Dear Manny, your editing is getting better and better🤩
The 55mm f1.8 is the lens which convinced me to go with Sony, consequently it was one the first two FE lenses I acquired. It has a beautiful character and I enjoy the colours it renders a great deal.
Just as important for me is the form factor, which is perfect being beautifully compact and lightweight. It is a joy to handle.
I have grown to prefer mechanical manual focus lenses for my much of my photography but the 55mm f1.8 is a lens I wouldn’t part with. When I need autofocus, this lens rarely disappoints.
I also had the Sony 85mm f1.8 but never really enjoyed using it. Perhaps the quality/character of the 55mm ruined it for me. I can’t fault the lens or it’s value but it never clicked with me like my previous Canon 85mm f1.8 did or Zeiss Loxia 85mm f2.4 (which fits into the sub £1000 price) does now.
Prior to the Loxia, I used the 90mm f2.8 G Macro as a double duty portrait/macro lens. It’s usable for portraits but it can be unflatteringly sharp in some scenarios.
The Loxia is a sweet spot for me in terms of optical quality/character and usability/ergonomics. The f2.4 aperture has never been an issue for me in my use scenarios though I can see it being issue for some.
Back to the 55mm f1.8, it is usually in my kit bag as an option and it is my most used autofocus lens. I wouldn’t part with it.
The Sony 55mm f1.8 is insane sharp. Very light and fast focus.
I havent used this 55mm1.8 lens for atleast a year now, that's because I find myself reaching for either my telephoto or wide angle lenses more but I've seen an image posted on facebook 2 days ago, so crisp and beautiful from this lens and that was a reminder for me of how good this lens perform. definitely gonna use it at my next shoot.
Many is so correct about 55mm 1.8. Its a amazing lens the sharpness is really superb. I bought this lens & some my friend have 50mm1.8... Which is comparatively cheaper... But image quality out of this amaze them all the time...
I love the 55mm f/1.8 lens. It is pretty much my go to prime lens.
i own the 55 1.8 and i love it.
The 55mm 1.8 is an amazing lens. Especially when doing video. It has such an amazing look. Wouldn't trade it for the world! Money lens.
Thanks for your input Bob
I sold mine, didnt like the purple fringing. Otherwise it was a good starter lens and responded well to extension tubes.

The dog, yo! I was literally laughing outloud
I’m agree with you, i’ve 35mm 1.8, 55 1.8 and 85 1.8 and i thinks that this three lens is very good
I adore ma 55. Since I got it its glued on my camera. You look great, shut the front door! 😂👊
Got my 55 Zeiss coming tomorrow. I love my A7riii
@Artemio Medina 85mm is magical but shooting close to the subject makes the face larger than 55 or 35.
@@h4nd50m3iam77 Good choice! Enjoy it!
@@h4nd50m3iam77 thats all I use
Wolfe Steet Productions it’s great will have some photos posted from the lens soon on my pages. FB: whitefeather_photography IG: whitefeather__photography
Great advice Manny, I love the 85mm 1.8
I have the 85mm 1.8 on my aps-c camera and it performs flawlessly. Tremendous value. I tried the 55mm 1.8 and it is amazing as well.
Just a comment to thank you for your videos. Always a pleasure to watch them. A guy from Paris.
Just bought the 55mm 1.8 amazingly sharp just living it.
I couldn’t agree more, Manny. The 55 1.8 and 85 1.8 are incredible (and incredibly light). These are two of the first lenses I got and I’ve never felt the need to upgrade. Don’t have the 35 1.8, I have the 35 2.8 instead, but otherwise I’m right there with you. Also didn’t notice you were skinnier. Nor was I aware that being skinnier could be a bad thing.
Late to the party, I have and love the 55mm and also have the 85mm f1.8 FE both are great lenses you can pick up for good prices used.
I've the 3 lenses, and I didn't regret this choice, crazy image quality, you have said all about them, no doubts for investing in that !!
The 55mm zeiss is nice and gives pictures a unique brightness and very sharp character in natural day light.. Just got this along with Sony 85mm f1.8 for portraits ... Both lenses are tact sharp.. The Zeiss is sharper... But the zeiss adds that extra little spice that I was missing in the 55mm range on aps-c format for indoor and outdoor near to mid field backgrounds..The 85mm Sony makes super gorgeous backgrounds on my recent outdoor portraits. No issues with these lenses once I learned how to use them.. Thank for all the great content .. keep it up!!!!
Just got the 55mm 1.8 and I love the sharpness
Those are the exact three lenses I always have in my kit, for exactly those reasons. The Zeiss 55, 1.8 was my first in 2014 and I still use it constantly.
55 1.8 zeiss was my first lens inspired by your Natural Light Photoshoot video in Downtown Chicago in 2017. It is still my all time favorite lens. Super crisp and versitile (photo and vid).
Manny, you look alright to me. Diana's opinion is the only one that matters! The 55 f1.8 was my first lens and I bought it with my a7iii ( paid full price!). I have the 85 f1.8 and it is amazing. I haven't picked up the 35 f1.8 but tried it out before Covid. Although some reviewers say it is too clinical and suffers from horrible CA, most photographers have praised it . I do own the Zony 35 f2.8 which I bought second hand and am quite fond of it for street.
I own 55mm 1.8 and it is an amazing lens. I love it. Regarding the 85mm options - I would say that if you can afford then go for 85mm Batis, not the cheaper Sony lens. Batis has weather sealing and it performs better. Sony 85mm 1.8 isn't that great with chromatic aberration and you do want a lens that can handle it during those backlit golden hour photoshoots. Sure, you can remove it in post but it's time lost.
Hi Manny,
You‘re absolutely right about the 55mm f1.8. A must have lens for all Sony EF users. The sharpest, quickest and most reliably lens I know. And it has a perfect look in terms of contrast. Love this lens, even it has a little high price tag. Clear recommendation!
I also worked with the Sony 85mm f1.8 for years. In fact it was my first ever native Sony lens. It is sharp und quick with AF, renders beautiful portraits. But, I like the Zeiss Batis 85 more because of the bokeh and the contrast. To me a Batis portrait looks more natural over the Sony one.
Keep going with your videos. I like your channel.
Greetings from Germany.
P.S. and sorry for my weak English.
You should do a
f1.8 vs f2.8 video 🙌
Also,
Manny you look pure shredded bro. 💪🏼.
The 55mm 1.8 is amazing, and should be in your bag.
55 f1.8 was my first full frame lens and is still my favourite lens. I have accumulated better lenses over the years but this still holds a special place in my camera bag.
Which lens have you moved on to?
The 55 and Sony 85 are my greatest lenses, super sharp and the bokeh looks nice and sometimes "swirly" and the Voigtländer 35 1.4
I shoot car photography , real estate and food but DAMN Manny you are always teaching me something new!
I have the Sony 35 1.8 (had the Sigma 35 1.4 Art, but sold it because of the weight, incredible lens if you don't mind that aspect), 85 1.8. Zeiss 55 is next on my list, but will wait to see how is the Sigma 50 1.4 Art II. Can tell you that the 2 lenses that I own are the best performance/price.
I have all three in my travel kit. He only problem with the 55 is having to be careful with tiny flaring in bright lights at night, that are hard to see until you are editing. Otherwise it is sharp with punchy color and contrast, available at well below the retail price.
100% agree 55mm is extremely sharp.
so dope , everytime i watch your video makes me just wanna go out to take some photos , big fan of you ( from vietnam)
The Zeiss 55 f1.8 is my favorite lens. SHARP AF! great video
I know that it might not be possible for you to do that since you don't have access to all the gear, but it would be cool to see third party options, like samyang AF 85mm f1.4
55mm Zeiss 1.8 is currently 680 on Amazon, if anyone is interested in it. I’d highly recommend you snatch it now before Sony gets crazy with the prices.
The 55mm Carl Zeis lens is definitely a great option. It was my first lens I bought over two years ago and it’s my number one most used lens.
Both the 55 f/1.8 and 85 f/1.8 are ridiculously sharp. Awesome lenses
The 55mm f/1.8 lens is such a great lens. I can find one copy used below NT$16000 (~US$545) any day. The results you obtain from this lens look absolutely professional, I bet only lens snobs could tell the difference between the images taken with this lens vs. something more expensive (such as the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L, which is somewhat better, but for 4x the price.
Manny, ALWAYS dropping that Knowledge! Thank you. However, Nikon makes the best glass so I have been using vintage Nikon prime lenses on my Sony mirrorless camera. I have a 28mm f/2.8, 35mm f/2.8, a 50mm f/1.8, 135mm f/2.8, and a Vivatar Series 1 ( which was commissioned by Nikon when the lens was introduced, in 1974) 70-210mm f/3.3-5.5 Macro zoom lens; all for a grand total $52.00! Not everybody is Ballin' like you! It goes without saying that they are all manual lenses, but THAT'S what makes it fun.
55 1.8 is awesome!
I definitely want to get the 55 1.8. Had the Sony 85 1.8 but sold it to raise some cash to buy a telephoto lens. I totally regret doing so. Have the 50 1.8 and I agree with Manny, it’s “no bueno.”
love the 55 bro
The 55mm is the bomb 💣
Absolutely love the 55mm f1.8, such a great lens!
55 1.8 ftw! Fantastic lens!
once i accidentally forget to kept my 24-70 lens in my camera bag for a wedding shoot. i shoot whole wedding with the help of sony 35mm f/1.8 & zeiss 55mm f1.8 .& it was very gr8 experience of my life & both lenses gives me amazing results in images ;-)
I own the 55 1.8. My favorite for sure.
55 1.8 is so underated, I'm not getting rid of it anytime soon.
I have the 50 1.8 and Ive gotten some great images from it
Its so cheap too
The 85mm 1.8 is my favorite lens. I use it constantly! Its so good and what a bargain!
I would have to say though the 50mm 1.8 I do own and I do like it. People say its garbage and its not as sharp, but I think it produces plenty fine images. Its not good for video though if you are also using an onboard-mic or shotgun mic because not only is the lens noisy when it focuses, but it also has bad focus breathing. But for the money, that is an extreme budget lens that would suit many beginner photographers well.
Please tell me more about your experience on the Sony 85mm 1.8, thanks !
The 55 1.8 is 🔥
Zeiss 55 is God tier. But all the Batis are great and the 50mm 1.4 ZA is another razor sharp gem
My Zeiss 55mm F1.8 is a pure beast and Ill never get rid of mine.
Almost every SONY FF shooters I know have that 55mm lens and that’s my first Sony lens.
I learn so much from your videos!! Thank you!
sick video man. i miss my 50mm but i also dont like the cheap one. not pleasant to use.
I had the 55/1.8 ever since it came out. I would certainly add the 85/1.8 and the 20/1.8, for what I do. When it comes to the 35, I am now leaning towards the new 35/1.4GM, instead of the 35/1.8. And still debating between the Tamron 28-75 and the 28-200 as an all-in-one walkaround.
The samyang lens lineup would make a nice comparison
The Samyang 18mm/45mm/75mm are very attractive. Very sharp images and reasonably good AF for very low prices!
