My workhorse lens, which includes portraits, is my EF 70-20mm F2.8L IS II USM. Adapting it to my R5 and R6 after moving into the RF system, and I kept it instead of getting the RF model as the EF model has almost no focus breathing. I haven't got to trial the RF version, but I have heard it is not as good against focus breathing as the EF is, and for that reason I will keep that EF lens until Canon can get me and RF lens that outperforms it. I've done just an absurd amount of work with it.
I'd say a close second is my Sigma 50mm F1.4 Art HSM. But it's not my main portrait lens, its more for specific stuff that has more context in the shot.

RF f2.8 doesn't breath that bad. But your EF mk2 is so capable. I would say if you have opportunity, try the f4. The RF f4 version is so compact that you can easily take it out as daily lens.

For portraits, definitely the 35mm and 50mm prime lenses. For special events and hikes (landscape) a good 24-105mm or a 70-200mm.

The 35 even with its distortion produces some really really nice portraits as well. My 35 was originally bought to do backstage with 2.8 for its wideness. Since then I've used it many times over to get some portrait flexibility from using the 50.

I got into primes as an escape from the chromatic aberration and flare of my zooms. It would take a lot for me to switch back. Still I am excited to learn that zooms are improving too. The past few years have been wonderful for lens development.

Happy owner of the RF 85 1.2, 50 1.2 and 70-200 2.8, but before I shot these amazing lenses, I was (and still am) a huge advocate for the older and cheaper EF 135mm f2L, simply stunning smooth bokeh, great colours and all round pop. 😃👍

Thank you for another very useful perspective on photography. I provide session portrait photography and use a Nikon Z7ii with a Z85mm f1.8 for the studio (clean studio backdrops do not require wide-open apertures to blur the background. To provide some insurance that I do not miss focus, I typically shoot at f4.0 to f5.6). I use the Nikon Z 24-70mm f2.8 for outdoor shots. This pair of lenses are a great duo! They have helped me produce some amazing images and, most importantly, have met my customers' needs!

At the introduction of the A7RV, Sony allowed me to use the 1.2, 50 mm in combination with the A7RV, what incredibly sharp photos I was able to take in a short time. I have an A7RIV with a 200-600 lens and a 24-105 lens. If possible, I will buy another wide-angle lens for my holiday to Italy next spring. After saving a lot I also want to buy a 1.2 50mm, used I think. I enjoy your videos every time and also the setting of my camera is a success thanks to you. Good luck in your life and I wish you a fantastic Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Fred van Schaagen from the Netherlands

Canon 85 mm 1.4 L is my fav portrait lens. Plenty of bokeh. But the Canon 70-300 mm 4-5.6 L is also pretty amazing. Just have to be more careful with ISO speed to keep blur from slow shutter speed.

Have you considered the Tamron 35-150mm f2.0-2.8? In my opinion the focal range is also far more useful than 70-200mm. For people photography I'd pick the Tamron any time over the Sony. For sports the GM2 is probably the better choice because the af of the GM2 is definitively faster.

I got a Leicaflex camera in 1967 at a Canadian PX in Germany. Kept till early 1980s. Had the 50 mm lens it came with it. Wish I kept it. Sometimes used a hand meter for lighting. It was a great lens for portrait. Just briefly did photos of people mainly in the 70s while going in college.

I agree with all of those choices but my go to for child or group portraits is actually 24-105 f/4. Sure, it doesn’t have all the bokeh but kids move too much and you can’t shoot wide open for groups anyway. I do use an 85 f/1.8 for headshots or other single adult portraits. I used to have a 70-200 f/2.8 for Canon but when I switched to Sony, I just got the f/4. Portraits are not my main business and photography in general is only a side business for me. I mostly shoot real estate. So, I’m not the typical portrait/event shooter.

I have two favorite portrait lenses. Fuji 90mm f/2 and Fuji 200mm f/2. The Fuji's Bokeh with the 200mm can be a little harsh depending on the background, but for simple, street portraits I do for friends, the 90mm f/2 is my goto.

My lenses are the cheap primes from the EF mount: 28mm F1.8, 35 F2, 50 F1.8, and the 85 F1.8. And my 'hidden gem': the original 80-200mm F2.8 L zoom for EF. Somehow everybody forgot about that lens. And it is a absolute steal!! A mint one can be had for below 500 dollars! It might not be USM or have IS, but it works on EOS digital and film cameras. But also works well on RF-mount cameras.

The magic drainpipe is one of my favorite lenses. I like to use it for landscape on a tripod (often doing panorama sequences) since IS is useless on a tripod. I'll be sad when it kicks the bucket because parts are hard to find and I can't find a maintenance manual for it either.

Def agree with both of y’all’s points but for me at the end of the day I’m running a Sony a1 w/ primes, all Sony GM’s, the 24mm 1.4, 50mm 1.2, and 85mm 1.4. My main as of late is the 50mm 1.2 but I do like longer lenses for keeping peoples figures thinner rather than wider when possible, just depends on the desired shot, distance available, and angles I can take it at. 😉

let me premise that I don't do this for work but for hobby and I have a Canon APS-C, I am very good with the 50mm f1.8, so it's an 80mm equivalent (i know it's just an entry level lens), I also like the photos taken with the 24-70mm f4 (38-112mm equivalent), it's not very bright but it's quite flexible

    • @johndavidtackett
      @johndavidtackett Рік тому +1

Yes but even thought it’s a budget lens, that 1.8 is incredible especially for the price and you get beautiful bokeh with it, 80mm equivalent is close to my fav focal length for headshots and portraits. It’s one of the first lenses I got when I finished switching from Nikon to Sony back in 2019, I’ve got the 1.2 now but still keep that one around just in case. 😉

My Sigma 135mm F:1,8 ART for my Nikons is by far my choise when it comes to outdoor portrait. Indoor a 85 or 50mm depending on space and distance. I have a 120-300mm Sigma f:2,8, it is HEAVY. But when it comes to bokeh, man, ill tell you! It is worth every gram of weight!

Great show folks. Thanks. I agree my object of desire is the Sony 70-200 f2.8 GM2 without a doubt. But poor as I am I console myself with converted and barely usable Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6 DN. However, I do love my Sony 85 f1.8 and Sigma 56 f1.4 on full frame and APSC respectively.
The under rated Sony E 55-210 OSS Kit zoom can produce cracking shots when not pushed too hard, I also use it on my a7r and happily end up with 15MP files. I must do some tests.......

Cool vid.... I shoot with a Sony A7RII. My lenses are a Sony 90 mm G master f2.8 and Sony 24-70 mm Vario f4. Hmmmm.... As for which do I prefer? I agree with Chelsea in the consistency of the shoot so if I just have to outright pick one, I will say my 90 mm is a beast especially for when I am shooting in my studio. It makes me work for every shot...lol.... But overall, I am happy with the results. I do shoot with my 24-70 in studio and outside and it is just a wonderful tool. I have taken my 90 on walkathons/street shoots and.....I wanted to test it.... I am overall happy with the shots, but it was just not versatile enough so I felt like I missed really cool shots that I really wanted. To be fair, I did shoot what I wanted with the 90, but it was just not versatile enough for shooting walkathons....
    As for next ideas/purchases....
Hmmm.... Right now, I am still content shooting portraits and more personal shoots. Buuuuuut I am open to what the future holds. I am passing on the Hass 100 mega pixel camera. By the time, I finish shooting my A7RII, I expect that Sony should have not only a 100 megapixel medium format camera, but also one that revolutionizes the market for what it means to have wireless tethering. Just imagine being able to shoot and share the 2 mp photos from the camera via facebook or with the immediate client or with the 3 or 4 people via them accessing via their cellphone plus still able to share to a tablet and a separate laptop and big screen tv....... all at the same time and in real time.... That would be amazing!
Sooooo.... I am going back and forth on do I want a new lens and if so, it will likely be a Sony G master 50 mm or whatever they have.......or do I want a Profoto A1 or A2 or whatever their more portable light....
    In either case....
    Gotta go....
But cool vid and right now, I just can not bring myself to be interested in the 70 - 200 mm eventhough it has been popular for many moons. I see the value and even see the tool and the benefits of that tool for certain types of projects, but I am just not sure that those factors can be currently justified considering the subject matter that I shoot. I do plan to build my lens locker with a combination of primes and zooms, buuuuuuuut I am doing my best to hold out for a Sony 100 megapixel camera as I would want a lens built specifically for that camera.
In either case... Cool vid and have a wonderful day.

Tony i need your help please
I’m a beginner and i got the canon eos 250d that i just knew it doesn’t have the central pin .. and it’s really hard to connect it with accessories from other brands
I did my search and it appears that godox has a frameware update for the x1t-c that would make it work .
The question is ..does it really work efficiently? Do i need both a transmitter and a reciever? (I want to use it with the strobe light godox ad600 b )
I would really appreciate your reply
    Thank you

24 to 70 F4 IIS Canon is the Boom. A better lens than the 2.8.

i cant imagine a world where the 24-70 f2.8 is mentioned as a portrait lens but no mention at all on the 28-70 F2

About the 24-70 f/2.8: why not use the 28-70 f/2? That should give loads of bokeh wide angle?

I'm with Chelsea on this one. My first choice is always my 85mm Prime (Zeiss 1.4). Second is my Sony 70-200 f2.8 G-Master. Third is my Sony Zeiss 24-70 f2.8, because it truly is THE workhorse of lenses - and not just for portraiture, but for everything. Tony is right in that the 24-70 doesn't produce the bokeh of some of the others, but I'm good w/that. Great video, guys - thank you!

7:56 Exactly because of what software can do in the post there's no sensible reason for lenses with low F-number for blur effects. The only reason you would want F1.2 is that it is usually sharper over the focal length. The lens is better made, with better glass and better techniques.
Rarely do I lose all patience with Tony but it does happen when he talks about bokeh and how it can differentiate you from phone photographers. Who did Tony talk to that gave him this severe imposter syndrome? Yes, micro-cameras in phones are getting better and the result compares with high-end cameras under ideal circumstances. The only conclusion we can draw from this is: the market for photographers is shrinking. High-end cameras are for low light, high dynamic range, and high resolution. Not for silly things like bokeh and blur.

Loving your videos guys, especially the nice dynamic between you two! and of course, substance professional, as always. Very good advice on the lenses. Had myself the 50/1.8 when I had a small budget, and 50 is really the most versatile prime. Also Chelsea's choice, the 85mm, is the Bugatti of portrait lenses. Thanks, great work!

    I like my Sigma 35mm 1.4 lens.
It is a very capable and versatile lens, which I always have on my camera.
As a bokeh addicted, I agree that 2.8 is not enough.

Zooms cannot touch prime lenses when it comes to picture quality, I loved my Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D until I started shooting with the older primes and now I dont even look at it anymore. Zooms also make photographing boring and lazy
