Go and try playing Unity. It controls like dogshit and Arno gets magnetically pulled towards every random prop round him instead of going in a straight line.
This game was actually raytraced then baked which is extremely time consuming so most games don't which is why the lighting has that raytraced feel to it even though it's faked
Yes, that sentiment made me install this game twice only to uninstall it after realizing how the pedestrians change their clothes and faces on runtime every time you get closer to them or turn around to see them. And if that doesn't happen, the facial and clothing details pops in and out randomly. You can see that at 2:32. If he kept walking, you would see a lot more of that and you can't ignore it.
I just love how smooth the jumps are where the character turns mid air to angle himself better for the upcoming jump/run. You don't see that in modern AC games.
Unity system looked really good, when it worked, but I would argue AC1 and the Ezio games had the best functioning parkour system. In other words, Unity has the edge in form, AC1-Ezio has the edge in funcion. There was just something the felt really good about parkour in those early games were, for me, Arno's parkour seems more like I'm suggesting were he go rather than direction it, and it's kinda janky and floaty sometimes were with Altair and Ezio if feels like I'm directing where they go even though most of the animations are nowhere near as flashy as Arno's.
The parkour was top tier but also the music and audio effects were masterful, that feeling of leaping quickly through a persons living room to the next alley and hearing the ambient sounds change from exterior sounds to interior sounds then back again, especially during the riots and the interior lighting was gorgeous especially the heavy candle light, the hard natural light from doors and windows, metal reflections, facial detail & animations.. little details but put it all together & it’s the most immersive to date, very very well done.. More of this please
Unity's parkour had flaws. It was unpredictable at times, and some of the jumps were a little too silly and unbelievable. But when it worked properly? It was a sight to behold. I wasn't the biggest fan of ACU stripping a lot of the tools & combat features away compared to AC3/ACBF and Rogue (no unarmed combat and disarms, no hidden blade combat, no tool counters, etc...) But I absolutely adored what they did with parkour and city design. It felt truly next gen in 2014, and it somehow still feels that way in 2023. Purely because we've seen nothing but regression when it comes to parkour and cities in AC since then. Ubi needs to go back and look at what worked with ACU and emphasize its strengths in new AC. Mirage was a small, but meaningful step in that direction (in terms of city design). But playing around with its painfully dull and jerky free-running system made me realize just how much we've lost since old AC. Unity is not a masterpiece in my eyes, though certain parts of it continue to age beautifully. There's a lot to learn from that, and I truly hope Ubisoft starts taking note.
"and some of the jumps were a little too silly and unbelievable." …Except for the fact that ACU's change to the movement toolbox was literally inspired by French freerunners. A whole ass doc was released about it in '15. What is research?
@@JeffreyColey Not the moves that were the issue. It's the distance covered in certain jumps between buildings and rooftops. Arno will sometimes look like he's flying because the game is incredibly generous with how far holding down Space/Parkour Up will fling you. It was flow-breaking and silly at worst, and mildly jarring at best. Doesn't mean it wasn't inspired by real freerunners, lol.
Just look at the 00:19 - 00:24, like the camera is pushing Arno and also the jump distance is so unrealistic. But yeah, the animations are beautiful, and a bit on non-realism doesn't make it bad if it gives the flow to the movement.
Exactly! You summed up my own feelings well. I will miss the feeling of moving like a beast (AC3) and fighting like one (all the previous games except AC1). I miss the hidden blade combat, especially the use of double blades. I loved the idea of an unarmed assassin killing his opponent with their own weapon. At least Unity gave us new tools to play around with, along with a dedicated button for projectiles. Which predictably Ubisoft took away from us in the next game. Still, Unity deserved to be the future of AC games. Should've been a trilogy at least.
I'd say they improved the combat... I mean Black Flag's combat is the easiest shit ever i.e. you get one counter and then you can chain kill an entire army in under a minute. ACU made the combat more balanced and less broken... though it does stink they removed unarmed combat...
this game is a masterpiece unity and assassins creed 3 allowed me to escape so many situations in my childhood by hpping on my xbox and escaping to the rooftops of historic cities. I hope they focus on the parkour more in the future.
This game's parkour and swift hidden blade kills were something else. The thrill of running and butchering random people while doing so is an experience.
I love how everyone who gets these videos recommended downloads the game only to find out Arno controls like pushing a 500lb fridge on wheels up a slope made of ice while being magnetized to every random prop within a 5ft radius all the time.
Lol. I read a comment that said Unity is more enjoyable when you watch gameplay rather than when you actually play it. Currently playing it rn and you're right.
In my experience it can be a bit tricky but if you know the game well enough rarely will it be genuinely the games fault you did a move you didn’t intend
I’m so glad the community is giving this game its due praise lately w the release of Mirage. It feels like this series might finally be finding its footing again
Arno Dorian had that kind of well educated gentleman manners that made me remember Ezio. Overall thats the last character in AC franchise to make me feel something cool. Since then they have all an empty soul. Even Elise character was cool and interesting plot concerning her. She is the best secondary character from all AC games so far.
Just imagine Unity's Parkour system and mirage's graphics combined to remake the ezio trilogy. If nothing else is changed then that game will be the best game made by ubisoft ever.
I don’t think people tend to mention the audio associated with the freeruning in this game, but it’s incredible. If you take the time to really learn this game’s janky parkour system it can be some of the smoothest and most rewarding gameplay in the series.
One of the few games I can just boot up and run around without worrying about a mission or objective because I can just enjoy the city and movement. This will get me crucified but it is no doubt my favorite AC. I grew up playing the original all those years ago and this game actually perfected what it felt to be an assassin.

And so once again my brothers, we've gathered here to appreciate this masterpiece after being let down, yet again by another crude copy that is AC Mirage.
It was actually kind of stiff and choppy with some smooth moments here and there. The smoothest and most satisfying parkour was from AC1, AC2, Brotherhood and Revelations. And if you say it's Ubisoft fault just listen, Ubisoft is gonna make whatever game they sell the most, Valhalla and Odyssey sold a bunch of copies, meanwhile Unity didn't do as good in the first 2 years and only got hate, so its completely understandable that a company would want their product to sell more so they changed absolutely everything. One of the big complais with Unity was that the games were getting repetitive and it was more of the same. That's one of the reasons Ubi decided to change with Origins. Anyway, that's what we get because a bunch of kids hated on this amazing game back then. We only have the memory of a great game here, cuz Ubi it's not going back to this (i hope im wrong)
And 2 days ago I was debating with a guy on a Mirage video, the guy said that Mirage had the same parkour as Unity. I like Mirage and the effort that Ubi Bordeaux has made despite its more than limited parkour but come on don't exagerate.
