- Goth as we know it (The "Goth Subculture") has been around for quite a long time now and I wanted to create a video celebrating the styles that originated from the subculture. From the humble beginnings of the 80s scene to the modern style. This is going to no doubt be controversial and may piss off some people but remember, this is my video and just my thoughts though I may do a followup explaining why I didn't include certain styles in this video.

Romantic was my favorite! It was pretty much my favorite style growing up
"Romantic Goth is such a beautiful style...." It sure does. Too bad there has been only a mere sprinkling on the musical side of things. I would toss in early Frozen Autumn ("Don't Cry For Me" comes to mind), pre-Angina Pectoris ("The Agony After"), some stuff from 'And Also The Trees", etc., etc. Now unless I missed something along the way in the past 10-15 years (e.g., a sub-genre simply named "Romantic Goth") to my knowledge there hasn't been much throughout the decades. :(
+Kai_Decadence -- I'm more curious than ever about so-called Romantic Goth. If I get the chance I will probably comb through a bunch of eBooks (=PDF's) I have on the gothic genre from different points of view. That includes the few books I have on hand in my personal library (e.g., Mick Mercer et al.). It might be a waste of time because I sense I won't find anything substantial. With that possibility in mind, would you or any others reading from the sidelines care to cite any worthwhile sources & links? Once again, too bad there hasn't sprung up a musical sub-genre under the umbrella term, 'Goth Music', because it would have been interesting to hear stuff along the lines of the few songs I cited previously (I forgot to mention "Charlotte Sometimes" by The Cure which in my book is one of *the* most quintessential 'Romantic Goth' songs on the planet). Quite odd since there were virtual styles of music under the banner of 'Ethereal' or 'Heavenly Voices' many moons ago.
It might be a tangent but here goes. If there was some sort of canonization process (or awards in the manner of the Oscars) for gothic sainthood, I'm sure I and many others would vote for Ms. Benedict in some category. :P
Angela Benedict I am a teen getting into gothic style. I know your UA-cam channel is about goth culture, I think. Any ideas to help me understand more towards goth, since your goth. I was thinking of very alternative and distinctive style, since I am more of a young rockstar, cause I am a electric guitarist. I am a guy by the way. (Christian goth?) is that a thing or not? @Imperator From my understanding (please correct me if I am wrong), romantic goth is a downplayed version of victorian (if goth trad and victorian goth had a baby). They use modern style goth clothing but with a victorian flair. They still use corsets but may opt out of using big skirts for more simple style dresses. Lace and satin is used but in a minimal fashion and they're outfits are not as "obnoxious?", "fancy?", (insert appropriate word here). It is more practical in nature.
Victorian and Romantic are my primary Gothic fashion genres.
Moonless Night i see the differences between the styles, they don’t look the same to me at all, the only similarities I see are corsets and the lace.

LOVE! This is perfect. Way, WAY better than that other 40 years of goth video. I also love how you showed both men and women, different ethnicities, and different body types, too! Very well made.
by the way, there is a crossovere/nu metal band called D-FE (unluckily they are split up) here on you tube you can listen their songs "Muziki (Toute la musique que j'aime)" and "Kemite". well, they use a lots of african typical accessories like shells or masks mixed with alternative look metal style. the effect is sooo cool. The singer (the male) uses the facepaint like the tribal afro warriors, with white stripes :) I have studied some afro religions, well, I am curious about it, the ancient Gods and Goddesses. I am a wiccan, it should be amazing if some black wiccans speak about their way of celebrating wicca. but maybe they are yet into voodoo or candamblè religions, not in traditional wicca :)

That's what the 40 years of video has done wrong. Simply taking a model and quickly doll them up with fast make-up job and cheap costumes just isn't authentic.
In fairness though, the male one was definitely better than the female one in my opinion. Other than "emo" being included, Liisa did a good job. :)

Most true ! In my circle, there was only one black girl (very nice) and one very asian guy who run special evenings. There was also one good looking lady who, when I finally dare ask, told me she was half eskimo, if you believe that ! I would have liked more diversity ! (BTW I must have been the only gypsy in this tribe too…)
I dunno why but I felt like crying watching this. Our subculture is so diverse and beautiful. Great music selection btw

Perhaps it’s because goth is literally a white subculture. Can white people get credit for anything? I’m sure you have a different tone when it’s about any other race’s culture.
@@Cybeldina 🤦 😂 I hope you’re joking with your statement Black Goths been around in early Proto Goth during first wave of Goth Subculture do research we been around we small minority in the Goth Community we deserve included not excluded from Goth Subculture we been part from the beginning of it is not only White Goth Subculture it was POC part of it as well inclusive and diversity from the get go.
Amazing montage! Brings back memories. There are elements I haven't "outgrown" from the 80s. I guess I've been wearing Corporate Goth at work and didn't know it!

Yeah, I wanted to show diversity but it really was kinda hard finding these pics because they kept throwing in emo/scene people and well, that's not what my video was about so I had to do some digging for the actual Goth stuff and while there weren't many, I I made due with what I could find lol
@Baudelaire Ether You know the goth scene was/is really big in south america and parts of asia and africa? POC goth people have existed from the beginning and multiple well known bands feature POC members. By your comment I assume you either don't know much about the goth community/aren't goth at all or you're just plain ignorant. In both cases I recommend you to actually listen to some goth and deathrock and get to know the scene and the people a little better instead of attacking people for including POC people in their videos.

I've been goth for along time and appreciate all of the categories within it, but I have never fit neatly into any subcategory of it. I'd rather just wear whatever strikes me on any particular day. I've always been on the ecclectic side, though I suppose I lean more toward pinup than anything else.
I love all of the diversity that you included here. Not only did you show various interpretations of the style within each group, you included different races, genders, and body types. You included the creative nature within the goth community. I loved it!

I REALLY loved this video! I found it interesting that while there were definite differences between the styles, there was a fair amount of overlap as well. And the music was great. It correlated with the images of the styles you were portraying very well.
I would also like to echo what wherehaveallthetacosgone mentioned on how you included people from various ethnicities and body types. Thank you for that.
I can see how that "I've never seen an ethnic Goth before" bit could become... tiresome, and that is as good a reason as any for including them in your video. I've seen a fair number of Asian Goths / Rivetheads / Cybergoths, and to a lesser degree some Hispanic Goths / Rivetheads / Cybergoths (more of the later two for both ethnicities, though) But I've not seen many black Goths. I know they are out there, but haven't seen many pictures of them. I imagine you really had to dig to find some of the pictures. I'd love to find some like those, showing the diversity, for my Pintrest "Gothic People" board.

Very beautiful. I used to dress Goth way back in the early 2000s. I'd say I was probably Romantic/ Victorian Goth in my youth although I didn't have the stylish elaborate beautiful dresses, nor did I even have a corset until I was almost 25 years old, and by that time my first Goth phase was nearly done. I'm interested in seeing how the original Goths dress today now that they're older. Yes, the Goth subculture will always remain beautiful. There's style and individuality that's ever- changing, which is a good thing that way it doesn't get boring. Is there a vampire/ romantic Goth subculture? I'd like to see a video of that sometime. Awesome work! 🙃 some of the early pictures reminds me of early 80's punk rockers, very awesome to see the corporate Goth and Gothabilly I assume is fashioned from the Rockabilly look.

I know so may have said the same thing, but I will also show my support as a goth: You. Nailed. It. Wonderful video, infinitely better than the popular video of the same. You captured it EXACTLY AND with people of color too! You even included corp goth, yayyy. Even I learned a thing or 2. When you put gothabilly, it really does separate gothic pinup when compared. Wonderful work. It's funny how some people may look at goth folks and be so off putted but when I see this I get so excited :D, they're all so beautiful, you all are so beautiful to me!! It's very good, but it missed cybergoth, steampunk, pastel, pagan, nugoth...
Nah, I didn't miss those. This video was only tackling the styles that actually originated from the Goth subculture, not appropriated into it. To give the short version...
CyberGoth = Rave/Industrial Scene
Steampunk = Is and always was it's own scene
Pastel = Japaense Street Fashion (Shinjuku to be specific)
Pagan = Appropriated
Nu Goth = Hipster Scene (though I can see why people would think differently)
Gothic Lolita = Lolita Subculture
Like I said, no offense to the people who likes these styles but this video was only targeting the main styles that originated out of Goth. Hope this makes sense. :)
Kai_Decadence ok, I agree, but why the corp goth, pin-up and vintage? It's classified just like pastel and nu-goth 'not goth enough'. After all it's funny, let's not argue about that :)

For the corporate one, I decided to include it because when I looked up some photos of Goth musicians as they aged, a lot did start adopting a more corporate looking look, specifically Patricia Morrison, Gitane Demone, Peter Murphy, and the whole ensemble of Bluntengel. So I figured "what the heck?"
I will admit that I probably should've left out Pin-Up/Vintage but at the time, I was kinda annoyed how the "Pin-Up" looked in the other 40 years of Goth style video so I wanted to show a more accurate version of a Gothic-inspired Pinup girl you know? But I digress lol
Alex Rose I'm Pagan so I understand :) but imagine, there IS a branch called pagan goth.
This has been so far the most accurate video showing the different goths styles (the actual ones), and I absolutely loved it!!! You nailed them all! Thank you so so much for not including things like emo and pastel. And for once, all of the pictures have been of actual goths as well!
I'm very glad you enjoyed the video, it was so fun to make and I just wanted to give a more... Honest take on the 40 years of Goth thing instead of complain about it haha. People are upset that I didn't include Pastel & Nu on this video but the simple fact of the matter is they didn't originate directly out of Goth, just appropriated from it and it's not a bad thing per say but it's not a "Goth" goth style, just dark alternative and I just wish more people understood that. And don't get me started on Emo haha

I really like how you showed the differences between Trad Goth and Deathrock, and the differences between Romantic Goth and Victorian Goth; Romantic Goth has a lot more of a fantastical element and draws from a much broader range of periods, and a lot of people conflate the two whereas Victorian Goth may sometimes borrow from other periods (especially Edwardian and Baroque details) but for the most part is inspired by Victorian mourning attire.
As I dress in a variety of frilly anachronistic styles - Romantic Goth, Gothic Lolita, Victorian Goth, Gothic Aristocrat, etc. the differences are rather apparent to me, whereas to a lot of people, I think they're all just 'old-fashioned black ruffly things'. I love the big bell sleeves and elegant princess seamed verticality of the medieval Romantic Goth, the exuberant eclecticism of baroque, renaissance and Victorian designs present in the more generally anachronistic designs, the historical faithfulness of true Victorian Goth, with its mourning veils and properly layered garb, the extravagance and harmony of Lolita, with its balanced silhouette and attention to details, the practicality of wearing shirts and trousers that comes with Gothic Aristocrat, that is balanced with a sophisticated decadence, etc. etc. They all look inter-related but different to me.
And I'm currently on a '90s Romantic Goth kick - looking up all the wicked queen dresses,
pixie-hem skirts and big bell-sleeves on eBay...

Thank you for making and sharing this video! These are beautiful examples. I love Victorian goth but realize my style is more casual like the Romantic version. I also adore certain vintage styles with the high waists and pencil-type skirts. I'm currently building my wardrobe right now ^.^
You could still do a cool vintage look for a guy, or something more androgynous :)
We were called Darkwavers in California and most of the US in the 80’s, not Goths.

I started being curious about goth a few months ago when I learned that some of the bands I like, like The Cure and Joy Division, are considered goth. I didn't really know much about the subculture but I started researching it and figured out that I'm closest to trad goth since I really like how it blends together with the punk and post-punk influences on the music. This video really helped me because I love how you showed trad goths throughout different time periods and not just things from the 80s, not every part of the fashion needs to be replicated today (I can't pull off the big hair look) and so it was great to see how people have been innovating and building on the oldest version of goth to bring it into the modern era. Thanks!
No problem but I can't stress enough that it's not about the look so you shouldn't stress too much about looking a certain way to have "goth cred" sorrtaspeak, it really does come down to the music and so long as you enjoy or have fondness for actual Goth music, that's what really counts in the long run.
Kai Decadence Goth music is what got me into the subculture! It made it less intimidating for me and helped me decide to find out more. And though I know it’s not about the look, I also will be going to a goth club for the first time and feel like visually fitting in even just a little will help me feel less out of place. I’m always cautious of people who focus on the look over everything else because they’re missing the point, but I do think that fashion is an important signifier of identity that I can’t just ignore.

The music is PERFECT! Romantic Goth is my favorite aesthetic. Trad Goth is a close second. If there was a "Lazy Goth" that would be me right now. Makeup, hair and something dark.

Very nice I love the music compilation used in this video. Yeah there's all kinds of looks for the goth genre and sub-genres. Hey I say to each is own in the style you go with make it your own.

I really hope that you won't receive any nasty comments for omitting "hardly-Goth-subgenre XYZ". Some people can be extremely defensive and quick to call someone "intolerant" or "elitist" if your idea of Goth does not conform to the modern "everything is Goth"- approach. So, kudos for your courage! :)

Why am I only seeing this now:: 2021? Seen the evolution of Goth over the years, wasn't aware of corporate, but love all the styles none the less. Truly creative minds find outlets in the darkest places.

I could kiss you for adding corp goth in there. I've been told that's just how "goth's dress in the office," but it drives me crazy when people say that. But to be fair, I'm rather fluid with my 'goth' style, so I usually don't go by categories. Very nice video. :)

Thankyou for showing old pics for trade goth as today's trade goth is a near shadow of goths origins.
In the late 80s and though the 90s the romantic goth look had a sub group called velvet goth and both of these styles was more flowing and not so fitted other than if you wanted to wear a corset but lots of layering with texture and you could even add elements of historical reference to medieval styles of dress in modern fabrics with designs like Beth Reid that fetched upward of $300 for one of her gowns and you would be a club stopper walking in the door in what was inspired by 10th century norman styles but in lace and velvet gown teamed up with a full circle sweeper satin lined heavy German velvet cloak.
That would scream elitism without a word being said.
There where alot of middle eastern elements that would be seen too with adding belly dancing hip scarves layered over long flowing skirts and I've even incorporated traditional Indian bridal jewelry hair pieces.
More imagination and freedom to explore was afforded to goths pre internet as there was no rules being a alternative subculture.
Alternative just means not mainstream and we found beautiful things to adorn ourselves in from all corners of the globe and in history.
The romantic goth look in this is kind of basic.

Listen to her and you will hear how bands coopted her work as a template. Listen to her recording with the Velvet Underground of All Tomorrow's Parties ( Lou Reed wrote) and contrast that with her recording with the Invisible Girls or The Blue Orchids, Her version of The End by The Doors and from those covers she was able to have people listen to her own material and the people who embraced her work would go on to be inspired to create what is the genre. I know who Nico is and while she was a good artist, she was not a Goth musician and personally, I get really tired of people bringing her up when it comes to the genre of Goth. Did her music influence some Goth bands? Yeah but influence =/= same as. It's the same as how Led Zeppelin influenced a lot of early Metal bands like Black Sabbath, Megadeth and modern Metal like Dream Theater and Tool . Led Zeppelin is not a Metal band just because they inspired some Metal bands and it's the same deal with Nico and The Doors and the other 1960s Psychedelic & Art Rock bands that inspired the first wave Goth bands to create a new genre of music (Goth Rock). Nico (and The Velvet Underground) were neat Art Rock artists but that's all they were.

Your posts have a narrow scope and if you cherry pick historical facts is that really history or you're interpretation of it? You see things emerge in an organic way that isn't contrived. Now the Banshees first tour was opening for? Bauhaus covered who? Robert Smith didn't get up and go to hot topic and record Pornography, which by the way is The Cures darkest and most gothic record . Join Hands was the record that was recorded after the above mentioned tour. Icons? It's not all about optics and music is secondary. The Stooges were the first Punks. They had long stringy hair and looked nothing like the Pistols. You can ask any music historian. And guess who Nico was banging after Jim Morrison, Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, and you guessed it, Iggy Pop. You can reduce many post goth bands down to a specific fashion style, reverb pedals and a menu of cliches that were boosted from 13~13 and call it goth. It is to a degree and it's not to say there isn't something going on or important. My point is that if you're going to tell an audience a story about something. You can't start at chapter 4. It's not accurate. You could say here's my top 40 and call it a day. You have to understand that maybe some of us who have been on this planet a lot longer than you might know a lot more about something that they lived through. I remember when that specific term was used to describe a specific recording of which music historians traced the elements and broke them down. Now some artists like The Cure had some songs that could be categorized as goth. But this was a completely different animal and for this band. Like The Cure they had some tracks that were goth but it is when you saw a shift and a specific definition and it's not Nico. You can categorize early Sisters of Mercy as goth but they sort of took the punk ethos in a different direction. If you can't play well then play slow, use lots of reverb and croak it out. Gimme Shelter by the Stones was their first or second single and it's not that interesting. So you have a stage presence with a dark look, dark lighting and dry ice and hire Patricia Morrison to boost your sound and up your game. She's been the go to goth for a number of bands. And she was from the very scene that spawned 13~13, Christian Death, the Cramps, and others. It's like that shirt that says England didn't invent punk rock girls did. From punk you have post punk and from there you get goth in that formula that I stated about the Sisters. But the template for that didn't happen in England either. That shit started with a sixteen year old homosexual in southern California named Rozz Williams and many get credit for something that they didn't do. Or I guess they did but not that well. Guy was fearless and I know because they emerged from a racist homophobic conformist hardcore scene that wasn't very receptive to his take on music, performance and style. He lived it until he died it and his work evolved and he never compromised anything just like I described Nico. You can go online and buy your gear and get in the drag and uber to a show but something about creating something that is different and unique and is fluid and interesting is a lot different than buying it and conforming to a narrow scope that fits in a box. Listen to Alien Sex Fiend and then Bauhaus and both are goth bands and complete originals. That playlist is a potpourri of cliches that really aren't original. You can get their intent I suppose but, I wouldn't cross the street to hear most of them but that's only one track. Who knows? I do. I lived through it and I saw it. I don't do the Specimen Kiss Kiss Bang Bang drag but I do love the music. All of it soup to nuts. So maybe if you're sick of hearing something that might tell you something. You can't understand what people are saying and perhaps they are steering you towards something that in time you will and with that understanding might find interesting. Or don't. You can listen to those shitty Sisters of Mediocrity records and apply kohl and post revisionist musical history and burn a cat in a cemetery. Or maybe you could learn to play your own music and stop with the nostalgia. Optics are fun I guess. If you want to be something someone was when it held something interesting. Once you can buy it though that d.y.i. rush isn't there and it's not edgy and controversial. It's a commodity that some gen xer is buying a second home with from the revenue stream that you are providing. That's not cool.

When it comes to the topic of Goth on my channel, I stick to actual Goth (Goth Rock, Deathrock, Darkwave, Ethereal Wave, and Coldwave, that's just the way it is. If you're expecting me to talk about things that aren't actually Goth music-related and trying to conflate it as such (I.e 1960s Psychedelic Rock, Art Rock, New Wave, Synth Pop, Industrial, Metal - specifically Gothic Metal -, etc.) then I'm sorry, my channel just isn't for you.

Marble Index and The End both of which were recorded in the 1970s and have been defined as the first Gothic records and I guess by default means she's the seminal artist of the genre of which you have embraced as someone in the know. 1) All Tomorrow's Parties ( full version with Martin Hannet and the Invisible Girls. Do you know who he is? I'm guessing not. 2) You Forgot to Answer from The End . She wasn't trying to pretty anything up for a radio market. It's blatant. 3) One More Chance from the Drama of Exile which would probably be three to four records under her belt in the genre which defines you. 4) Win a Few from Camera Obscura there would be no Cure without Nico period. 5) Janitor of Lunacy from Desert Shore which on the title alone is a bit dim if not dark. Oh and that was 74 I think. 6 ) Secret Side from The End is acoustic goth if you will. And 90 percent of the artists you think are the real deal would back up my argument. The harmonium? You can't get any more gothic than that thing and if you listen to her vocal style, it's undeniable that 90 percent of the dudes in drag pantomime to that style. Why? It's goth baby remember? 7 ) Roses in The Snow from the Marble Index which was recorded before Kiss got all scary and shit. But I think optics aside we can agree their mess wasn't gothic . They just dressed like you. And another one with Hannet and the Invisible Girls to close with called Procession and if you can't hear what all those people have been talking about you probably think Hip Hop emerged from some suburban enclave in Connecticut or the heartland. It's like implying that decadence is vanilla with black jimmies but in a cup not a cone. Go back and do your research before you try enlightening the public with your watered down spooky fest. Thanks for bringing back The Goth Girls, as I fell in love with Them in the late'80's, but, before I could really understand what They were actually into, I never saw any of Them again. They were & if they're still around, certainly are Beautiful..
