Rogers largest bass ever caught! - Big bass on the fly - McFly Angler Episode 125

- I went fishing with Roger this past weekend and had an absolute blast. Pretty quickly into the trip Roger hooked into a monster bass, that had to be about 4-5lbs. Honestly it's the largest bass I have seen caught on a fly rod in person. Just amazing! I also got a decent little Rio. Not as large as those in that city park river called Brackenridge park I was fishing in San Antonio, but still decent sized, and one of the largest outside of Brackenridge Ive caught.
I will have to go back to that spot some time soon. There were 4-5 bass all cruising around there, eager to eat. I had another looking at mine but couldn't get it to commit. But each time we caught a fish in that spot, the larger bass would come in chasing, trying to eat the fish we were catching. The bass almost got the Rio I caught. But after those two fish in that hole, the bass were spooked and we couldn't get them to bite anymore.
We ended up fishing a couple other spots later in the day that I did not show, because they didn't produce fish and there wasn't anything worth showing in the video. I did include the very last spot in the video though, which if you have been fallowing you might recognize the spot. I actually came to fish there with John once before. And I had a huge bass come up and bite my gamechanger fly but I didn't get a good hookset. However this time around I did not see any bass in that spot. Oh well.
So I forgot my wading boots this time. I am always forgetting things on my fishing trips. But luckily Roger had some wading shoes in the back of his truck. They were quite tight, and my feet hurt pretty badly actually since my toes were curled up the whole time while fishing. But I was grateful for him letting me borrow them so I could witness such an incredible fish being caught.

Always love your videos. Hope you and your family have a great holiday.
Thank you! You too!
I went and hit up the same areas the other day after all of the rain. So many fish in that area. It’s nice seeing another guy fishing around San Antonio. I’m not a fly guy but I am an ultralight guy and fish the same size lures as you. If you ever wanna go out. I’ve got kayak, river boats for getting to some awesome secret backwaters with quality fish.
Oh and I just subscribed bud! Ha
Awesome man! Yeah it’s a beautiful area. Ultralight spinning rods are cool as well. I will let you know if I can get out. Find me on instagram or facebook. PM me there
I really enjoyed this video. This is the type of fly fishing I have to do since trout are not native in my area.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video.
Yeah same here, I’m in Texas and while we do have one river that stocks trout in the winter, and there are a few holdovers, it’s not a native trout for sure. I used to live in Colorado and miss the fly fishing for trout but there definitely is still some great fishing in other parts of the country.
Where do you live if you don’t mind me asking?
same here. I live in northern va. hours to the nearest trout stream. its either stocked pond trout or largies/smallies
Nice bass! 👍🎣👌 Happy Thanksgiving Mr.McFly. Maybe use some turkey feathers on a fly for the special day. 🤔😂
That would be cool, wish I thought of something like that. Maybe next year
Looks like fun. Can’t wait till next spring to get back on the water. It’s starting to freeze over here in northern Minnesota. Happy thanksgiving!!
Thank you, yeah it’s cold up there for sure, do you do that ice fishing thing on the frozen lakes? I’ve always thought that looked fun to try.
@@McFlyAngler haven’t for a long time. But going to get out this year. I’m off work for 6-8 weeks recovering from surgery. Figure I’ll have some time.
Oh man sorry to hear about the surgery, I hope you recover quickly and well. But if it gives you some free time to fish then awesome!
Well not much fishing. But jest finished building a 3 wt rod. And stocked up on a lot of tying materials.
It was a prostate cancer surgery. Got results yesterday and praise God it sounds like they got it all.
Wonderful! That’s an answer to prayer! God bless and I pray it stays away!
Very cool! Happy 🦃Day
Thanks! You too!
@@McFlyAngler you're welcome
It has some length but that thing is very scrawny. Good fish
It’s a river fish. They have to constantly be moving. I’ve never seen a fat bass on rivers, maybe they exist not sure. Not sure if that’s the reason or not but what I’ve always thought.
@@McFlyAngler I've seen scrawny ones in the reservoir out east. They're all great fighters.
Yes absolutely they are, I guess cause they are fit or something. Haha!
@@McFlyAngler I'm gonna get on the treadmill like him. He's on the proper diet and exercise program
lol! Yes I need to as well! Haha
