The one with Light trying to get Naomi’s name, and coldy and ruthlessly murdering her at the end. That was my favorite episode in the series. Light is an absolute monster, and an exceptionally intelligent one at that. Yet, he’s so charismatic, and you can’t help but like the guy, being lulled into a false sense of security. Knowing that he’d use that to his advantage, maintaining the facade of a caring friend, while you’re blissfully unaware of the danger in front of you. It’s even more horrifying than it already is because this could actually happen to you in real life. In fact, it already has. Well, aside from a notebook that can kill you, that is. Definitely my favorite episode of the series.
I assumed this would be a popular choice, because the episode really is brilliant from start to finish. It's also the first time that that side of Light shows itself, and yeah I agree with pretty much everything you said.
I actually bawled when L died, but it wasn’t a normal cry... the feels just HIT me. I was so confused as to where the sudden rush came from, but I just cried 😂
Till L was there I find everything is logical... The plans and process to capture Kira in last episode... I am not quite convinced... I didn't find it logical with the level of intelligence Light had

Shot in hand once and 4 times in the body by Matsuda and then heart attack by Ryuk. Loved the way he died. Absolutely awesome. (L fan here, so I was smirking the same way when that prick killed L)
I really love episode 25 mainly because of two scenes: The rooftop scene, where L talks about the bells and then asks Kira, if there ever has been a point, where he told the truth and the complete silence following it gives me absolute chills every time I watch it. And L’s death. Him seeing Kira smirking at his demise to confirm all suspicion and when he closes his eyes is just heartbreaking.
i'm soooooo happy ep 24 and 25 were the top two, they are by far my favorite ones. for me, the show ended when L died, i was not a fan of the melo and near arc except for the last ep. but holyyyy shiiit that moment when Light gets the book back and you realize his whole plan made me speechless. the thought that must have gone into that is astounding. i gotta watch this show again.

Episode 37 is my favorite. I love Lights finale Breakdown and wish I got to see more. Honestly it makes my like the fact that L lost so light being this arrogant and desperate seem natural and not forced.
I have the exact opinion as you with Episode 37! Episode 9 is still my Number 1 Episode though, just because of the twist of L sitting behind Light and that they were so close to each other and also because of "Watashiwa L Desu!" 2 twists back to back made me fall in love with that episode lol. Episode 7 is also my second favorite episode and I would also put it above Episode 25 and 24, just because of the brilliant pacing. Great video though! Love your Death Note content. :D
My favorite line was either in 23 or 24… when Higuchi called Mogi and said, “Why the hell can’t you remember the names of the people you hire?!” It was such a brilliant scene, and the line was so well delivered.
My favorite episode was probably the one where Mello's hideout gets raided by the taskforce. The confrontation between Light's father and Mello, the latter blowing the whole place up, the scene in the hospital, so much tension and brilliance
You can't forget episode 10 though! That tennis deduction was exactly what you needed to see just how clever L and Light could be, even under pressure and in each other's presence...
Wow I will have to dig a little bit on Wikipedia/google to find out which episodes I like the best. I honestly have the exact opposite reaction as you towards episode 2, which is my favorite one. 1. Episode 2: I just love how it is all set up, just as you stated L is here, and he is a force to be reckoned with, and someone that light clearly needs to meet head on so too speak, and damn! L does a hell of a job of setting up the ultimate chess game in all of anime. (I like it a LOT better than anything code geass managed too do.) - It is absolutely mental how well of a job L does in deducing as much as he does from one single broadcast/move, it was almost as if his opening move put light into one massive "Check yourself before you wreck yourself - moment" xD. 2. Episode 7: As others stated it was insanely intense to watch as Light tried to obtain the information of penbar's girlfriend, and it was really fun to watch how clever she was compared to most other people in the show. I found it quite memorable how she was there trying to track down her fiancé's killer instead of being shut down after the loss, and the fact that she was smart enough to hide her real name, that was so badass! 3. Episode 25: You hit the nail on the head there. - It was really a bittersweet episode. I didn't want him too go, but as you said they made it clear from the very second it opened up. Also the way light manipulated everyone and a god of death, into not only doing his bidding, but too not kill him in the process, that was insane in a good way, it was a real hard pill too swallow to see L die/loose. D: 4. Episode 8: Yes the potato chip scene was one of the most clever things light could do with someone watching him, and the scenes where ryuk hunts down the cameras were masterpieces, it was also intriguing too see lights lengths to tell if/when someone entered his room, and the fact that the agents saw it and made a note of it, really caused alarms to ring in L's head, granted not as much as other things. - I also loved how it showed a 'weak' spot in L's otherwise nigh flawless game of chess so too speak, this is the episode where he finally manages to say "hey, lets not use our real name" - it took them way too long to come up with that plan, and no less after we see it used in a previous episode with a capable detective in her own right... naomi uses it. - Then we see L back to his usual intelligence. - He narrows down the list to a much more easier to manage number due to light's obvious blunder, by not being patient, granted if he waited until ray returned home it would create more issues, but yea it showed how flaw light was by doing it when he did. 5. Episode 9: - That meeting was legit badass. 6. Episode 4: I just loved how he got ray to reveal his information/it was clever how he waited in this instance, I just felt he didn't wait long enough. xD 7. Episode 13: I really enjoyed how misa was introduced here, everyone thought she was an absolute moron, but she proved everyone wrong. (I love it when this kind of stuff happens) 8. Episode 11: There are more books! Someone with the EYES. - PAYOFF! :D 9. Episode 17: Light "clears" his name, and his father shows the lengths a parent would go too... to try too keep their families safe/out of trouble. 10. Episode 18: That fight scene in the handcuffs. - L believing wholeheartedly he is right (which he is) and his unwillingness too "give" up, also light protecting himself, and them all living in the same apartment/building, did a real great job at showing the lengths/how much they both wanted to hold onto their respective beliefs, their lives were all connected. ... Not too mention it could be considered as a simile to their situation, futile for either of them too escape it with their lives in tact.

It was nice watching your work on the video/putting a list together like you did! It really is an fantastic anime to watch, easily one of, if not the best cat and mouse kind of show out there that's animated. - It was extremely consistent until episode 25, when one of them had to eventually loose.
I think my absolute favorite is episode 16, when Light loses his memories and starts his most ambitious plan in the whole series. I always loved how he manages to throw L a little off with the amnesia thing. It's like the only bit where L is actually super confused and even says "I don't understand." Loved it.

Im glad you put Episode 25 on the no.1. I recently watched this episode, and i haven’t even got to the point where L dies, but at the scene were L is giving Light a massage, and that look on L’s face was so heart breaking (no pun intended) and was so upsetting that i burst into tears knowing that L is going to die, i couldn’t stop crying, i actually felt like as if im losing someone so close to me, and to be honest this was the first time i cried over an anime or any series in general. Also, you should definitely make a video were if death note and Phoenix Write Ace Attorney take place in the same universe, and if Phoenix Write can solve the Kira case.

Episode 2: perfect introduction to L and iconic cliffhanger 05. Episode 9: L revealing himself to light was great and light getting angry was so impactful 04. I personally really like episode 2, which is probably one of the best introductions of a rival character of all time; and the episode where the second Kira takes over the news station and detective Yagami and the police stand against her
One of my favorite eps is the episode called “Matsuda” I don’t remember what ep but I know that it is in the second season. It’s this kinda fun comic relief ya feel me. Plus I love matuda cuz he so funny.
3:47 I love the final episode because seeing light dye is one of the most satisfying TV moments I’ve ever seen considering how evil he was and I have been waiting for that since the very first episode. Great list! I agree on most counts but I have to put ep. 7 as my #1. That episode was truly mind-blowing to me. My heart was pumping the entire time, and there was a twist in EVERY LINE. From a writing perspective (which I take) that episode is a stroke of master genius. I think about it constantly, and because of it alone I encourage everyone and anyone to watch the series.
I love light/Kira as a character and at times was pulling for him just bc I had to appreciate the commitment. But I don’t see how anyone could have wanted to to win in the end. I can’t think of a worse dude than light.

Light taking down that female detective is the most thrilling and favourite episode in the series, why? The pacing is so good, plus the build up leading to that scene. The terrified look of Nayomi when she fucked up always gets me.
My favourite episode is probably the one where the death note first gets found by L that was such an intense struggle to stop that car and for both lights plan to come to fruition and also everyone to know how kira does it, plus it was just intense chase as he made the eye deal to squirm and then he finally crashed and everything just stopped as light picked it up and yelled
I like the episode where L explains to the task force about who he thinks Kira is with all the day counting and drawing on the table. I forget which one that is...
What a way to start off Death Note Month. Liked the video and agree with most of your choices. Look forward to seeing what this month holds in store for Death Note wise.
No no no.... NO. If the fucking producers would have FUCKING DARED to finish the series with L's death, I would have personally quit any dream I had until now, become a self-employed hitman, kill everyone who contributed to the writing of the scenes, and finally, kill myself. You can't fucking end like that. The fact that L was killed was already horrible enough since I would have personally preferred to have him thrive after he has been sort of... blocked for a while not knowing what he should do next to catch Kira. I would have loved for him to still beat Kira himself. I never wanted Light to win. The simple fact that he ended L's life is enough of a victory for him, and I hate that.
maybe I'll edit this later with a top ten, but episode 24 (or the one before L dies.) In my opinion, it's such a good depressing episode, because of how it really makes you feel guilty. The whole show the viewer has sat back having fun playing along with Light, killing ugly criminals we'll never meet, slowly progressing to this moment. We see him kill more characterised people with less crimes, but it's always "self defence" in a way, the moment of the murder. But now, while L isn't completely clean, we really get to know him. He can't do anything against Light, even though he knows he's Kira. He's defenseless, it's a cold blooded kill against someone we care about. Light has a chance to turn back, someone else has taken the blame for him. He could have a beautiful wife, amazing job, and a friend who truly understands him. The job might I add, would be legitimately cleaning the world, instead of slaughtering mass amounts of falsely accused. While, the viewer might waver though, Light never does. He has a goal and he will not be stopped by anything or anyone. The tone of the show is perminately changed, it really sets in that Light is the villain.
My favorite EP is the second episode or the potato chip episode or the tennis episode or the first episode or the last episode or L's death or the jailed light or the introduction of L, I don't know, their all pretty good but not much is super memorable since their all the same pretty much, it's more like watching a very long slow escalating movie than individual episodes
My favorite thing about episode 25 is that their rivalry revolved around them trying to find one another’s names so in a sense L won. He knew Light was Kira for a very long time but simply couldn’t prove it where as no matter what Light tried he couldn’t figure out L’s name and L died with Light still not knowing L’s name and Light wasn’t even the one to kill L either.
My favorite episode was episode 24 for sure- you were right when you said how insane it was when he finally got his memories back. I love in this show how they actually show most of the characters (besides Near) actually deducing their deductions instead of just coming up with them and I was able to FEEL the gears turning in L's mind and the absolute dread he felt that he knew in his heart he was about to die. It was an amazing moment, and I was so happy to get rid of Higuchi and get Ryuk back because I missed him a lot!
Oh yes, L's death is definitely my favorite episode as well. L became a favorite character to me almost as soon as he showed up. Seeing him go like this could have been terrible but they handled it splendidly. (Also watched all the ads for the youtube money)
The only thing I never got about the anime is how did light put a tv inside a bag of chips?? If the tv was so small how could he see it?? How can he see inside a full bag, shouldn’t there be a bunch of chips not letting him see? Could you buy such small TVs in 2000s, if yes, then should it be like 144p? How can he read the names? How can he do two tasks at exactly the same time??
I tend to agree with others when they say that the second part of the show isn't quite as strong as the first, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't absolutely fucking love the last two episodes. I personally really enjoy the ending of the show and think it's a large part of what made this show so iconic in my eyes.
My theory for the ending was near got controlled before death, told to write in the fake notebook on the day, that’s why near never changed the date for the meeting, because he probably was gonna control x kira.
I remember that I ended watching some anime on TV or an internet and thought: "hey, there should be lots of anime that I've never heard of and aren't known to me, at all. Maybe I should look up. Hmm would you look at that "Death Note". It says the genre is mystery and psychological thriller". So I've watched the first episode and was like meh seems ok. "I should watch the second episode though". And at the ending of ep 2 I've hooked up like a fish. I swallowed the whole hook and after 10 years I still sometimes listen to Death Note soundtracks. For me episode 2 was the best because it sold me this amazing anime. Other than that, any part of any episode where Light appears in public seems very entertaining.
Honestly kinda mad that you didnt put any episode from the second part.I know it wasnt as good as the first part ,but still it had his moments.Like that episode about Mikami's backstory was amazing,and the one where they do that raid on mello's position.

It was nice watching your work on the video/putting a list together like you did! It really is an fantastic anime to watch, easily one of, if not the best cat and mouse kind of show out there that's animated. - It was extremely consistent until episode 25, when one of them had to eventually loose.

I think my absolute favorite is episode 16, when Light loses his memories and starts his most ambitious plan in the whole series. I always loved how he manages to throw L a little off with the amnesia thing. It's like the only bit where L is actually super confused and even says "I don't understand."

I recently watched this episode, and i haven’t even got to the point where L dies, but at the scene were L is giving Light a massage, and that look on L’s face was so heart breaking (no pun intended) and was so upsetting that i burst into tears knowing that L is going to die, i couldn’t stop crying, i actually felt like as if im losing someone so close to me, and to be honest this was the first time i cried over an anime or any series in general.
Also, you should definitely make a video were if death note and Phoenix Write Ace Attorney take place in the same universe, and if Phoenix Write can solve the Kira case.
My favourite episode is definitely the one where he killed Naomi. The moment she showed her drivers license you just knew it was over

Great list! I agree on most counts but I have to put ep. 7 as my #1. That episode was truly mind-blowing to me. My heart was pumping the entire time, and there was a twist in EVERY LINE. From a writing perspective (which I take) that episode is a stroke of master genius. I think about it constantly, and because of it alone I encourage everyone and anyone to watch the series.
I love light/Kira as a character and at times was pulling for him just bc I had to appreciate the commitment. But I don’t see how anyone could have wanted to to win in the end. I can’t think of a worse dude than light.

The pacing is so good, plus the build up leading to that scene. The terrified look of Nayomi when she fucked up always gets me.
My favourite episode is probably the one where the death note first gets found by L that was such an intense struggle to stop that car and for both lights plan to come to fruition and also everyone to know how kira does it, plus it was just intense chase as he made the eye deal to squirm and then he finally crashed and everything just stopped as light picked it up and yelled

Yeah that episode honestly would've made for a wonderful ending.
No no no.... NO. If the fucking producers would have FUCKING DARED to finish the series with L's death, I would have personally quit any dream I had until now, become a self-employed hitman, kill everyone who contributed to the writing of the scenes, and finally, kill myself.
You can't fucking end like that. The fact that L was killed was already horrible enough since I would have personally preferred to have him thrive after he has been sort of... blocked for a while not knowing what he should do next to catch Kira. I would have loved for him to still beat Kira himself. I never wanted Light to win. The simple fact that he ended L's life is enough of a victory for him, and I hate that.
No one would like death note in episode one , but once you reach episode 2 , you will love it !!

In my opinion, it's such a good depressing episode, because of how it really makes you feel guilty. The whole show the viewer has sat back having fun playing along with Light, killing ugly criminals we'll never meet, slowly progressing to this moment. We see him kill more characterised people with less crimes, but it's always "self defence" in a way, the moment of the murder. But now, while L isn't completely clean, we really get to know him. He can't do anything against Light, even though he knows he's Kira. He's defenseless, it's a cold blooded kill against someone we care about.
Light has a chance to turn back, someone else has taken the blame for him. He could have a beautiful wife, amazing job, and a friend who truly understands him. The job might I add, would be legitimately cleaning the world, instead of slaughtering mass amounts of falsely accused.
While, the viewer might waver though, Light never does. He has a goal and he will not be stopped by anything or anyone. The tone of the show is perminately changed, it really sets in that Light is the villain.

My favorite EP is the second episode or the potato chip episode or the tennis episode or the first episode or the last episode or L's death or the jailed light or the introduction of L, I don't know, their all pretty good but not much is super memorable since their all the same pretty much, it's more like watching a very long slow escalating movie than individual episodes

My favorite thing about episode 25 is that their rivalry revolved around them trying to find one another’s names so in a sense L won. He knew Light was Kira for a very long time but simply couldn’t prove it where as no matter what Light tried he couldn’t figure out L’s name and L died with Light still not knowing L’s name and Light wasn’t even the one to kill L either.

My favorite episode was episode 24 for sure- you were right when you said how insane it was when he finally got his memories back. I love in this show how they actually show most of the characters (besides Near) actually deducing their deductions instead of just coming up with them and I was able to FEEL the gears turning in L's mind and the absolute dread he felt that he knew in his heart he was about to die. It was an amazing moment, and I was so happy to get rid of Higuchi and get Ryuk back because I missed him a lot!
Damn, pretty accurate top 10 I would maybe switch the #5 spot episode 9 for episode 16 but otherweise that would be my top 10 as well

Oh yes, L's death is definitely my favorite episode as well. L became a favorite character to me almost as soon as he showed up.
Seeing him go like this could have been terrible but they handled it splendidly.

The only thing I never got about the anime is how did light put a tv inside a bag of chips?? If the tv was so small how could he see it?? How can he see inside a full bag, shouldn’t there be a bunch of chips not letting him see? Could you buy such small TVs in 2000s, if yes, then should it be like 144p? How can he read the names? How can he do two tasks at exactly the same time??
Yeah it is odd, but the deeper I try to look at things the more questions pop up. So I usually just ignore this. XD
I tend to agree with others when they say that the second part of the show isn't quite as strong as the first, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't absolutely fucking love the last two episodes. I personally really enjoy the ending of the show and think it's a large part of what made this show so iconic in my eyes.
My theory for the ending was near got controlled before death, told to write in the fake notebook on the day, that’s why near never changed the date for the meeting, because he probably was gonna control x kira.
I remember that I ended watching some anime on TV or an internet and thought: "hey, there should be lots of anime that I've never heard of and aren't known to me, at all. Maybe I should look up. Hmm would you look at that "Death Note". It says the genre is mystery and psychological thriller". So I've watched the first episode and was like meh seems ok. "I should watch the second episode though". And at the ending of ep 2 I've hooked up like a fish. I swallowed the whole hook and after 10 years I still sometimes listen to Death Note soundtracks. For me episode 2 was the best because it sold me this amazing anime. Other than that, any part of any episode where Light appears in public seems very entertaining.
