Um, Max Brooks was born in 1972, not 1980. Anne Bancroft was 49 when this movie came out, way past menopause, so she didn't have Max after this film came out. Not sure where you got that information.
The way he goes from grief to contentment when he eats the bread dipped in sauce and cheese, the facial transformation was so authentic. I felt that in my gut and in my bones...my fat gut and big bones.
He definitely had unfulfilled potential. I think he would have been a wonderful dramatic actor if given a chance. This movie showed an emotional and empathetic side of him. Both him and Ann Bancroft.
Just watched this movie for the first time from your recommendation. What a funny, interesting and brutally honest film. Such great acting. The all night binge scene was really interesting and that scene really touches upon all sorts of addiction. Also, the spoken Italian in the movies is great. Thanks!
I love this film. It used to play on The Movie Channel back in the 80s. The scene with the sponsors is fabulous, and I frequently tell people that I like to suck the jelly out of a jelly doughnut and then replace it with chocolate syrup, even though I've never done that in my life. This is such a unique and daring comedy, thanks for showcasing it.
Seems like a slow paced movie you'd be watching thinking it was going to be funny because of who is in it, but is not a comedy and then BAM! "You are the ony!" and you just out laughing. The guy saying he sucks they jelly out and then fills the donut with ice cream lmao
@@discosecret6363 Yeah I grew up in the 70's in Arkansas and it is hard to explain to people how odd it was to see someone in real life who was Michael Moore sized, now a days going to a family reunion is like watching a less funny version of the Klumps.
One of my all-time favorites, and not just because I've struggled with weight all my life, but because you get to see just what a great actor Dom was. He's not just the funny fat guy: he runs the gamut from crying his eyes out sad, to frothing at the mouth angry! And it's nice to see him play the main character and not a sidekick.
Ever had over half a jar of peanut butter and warmed it in the microwave till it was runny then added hershey chocolate bars to the jar till it was blended, then filled the jar the rest of the way with whole milk then rewarmed it all agian ,then drink it like a warm milkshake? let me tell you if you want to gain 5 pound over night try this method out :(
I'm from an Italian American family too, not only that I was a fat kid and I'm now a fat adult. I remember going to see this movie in the theater with my mom and dad when I was 5 years old. I remember Dom Deluise was on Johnny Carson (yeah my parents let me stay up late and fall asleep on the couch as long as I was calm and quiet) they showed a clip of this movie and my mom was like "yeah, we have to go see that!" I even remember the clip they showed, it was the scene with Dom and his brother and the gun. I've always liked this movie, I enjoy it even more now because not only do I relate to it, I love how it captures 1980 NYC in a kind of time capsule.
I haven't seen this movie but from what you've shown here, this is basically my every day life. This video has been a massive temptation. I'm gonna die lmao
I’m American of Italian descent, and I grew up in NYC . If my kids ever ask me what it was like growing up , showing them this film will give them a good look at how it was! Ann Bancroft really captures a moment in time with this wonderful film !
THE most true-to-life movie of what it was like to grow up Italian-American in the tri-state area! Saw it with my finacee in 1980. At a theatre in Virginia. I was laughing my head off - and I was the only one doing so, Virginia not exactly being crowded with paisanos at the time. Embarrassed the hell out of her. But I couldn't help myself. It was like a trip back to The Bronx of my youth. (Or as Joe Pesci would say, "Duh Bronx of my yoot.")
It's about time that this little movie got the attention it deserved. And "almost cult classic" seems fair. It takes a humorous look at food-addiction, but also manages to have a serious side and with poignancy as well. I loved this film, and have an instant bond with anyone else who has seen it. It also has some great tips on how to add fillings to doughnuts! LOL
I first saw it on Showtime in 1982 and I remember telling people they have to see this movie and when it came out in VHS I immediately bought it and made my friends and family watch it and they became fans as well.
I like the idea and execution of this channel, thanks for all the hard work man. I always admired Dom DeLuise as a kid and think I might like this movie.
Growing up this was one of my mother’s favorite being a person of girth myself to this day the “get the honey” Scene makes me laugh so hard because I’ve pretty much done that
I remember watching this when i was a kid. Another film I enjoyed near that time was Cold Turkey, a film about a town that quit smoking. I felt it had that same style of humor.
My parents made me watch this as a kid because I was fat and they were trying to tell me something. Haha. It worked, 14 years of being at a healthy weight!
Three obese guys falling off the wagon in the same place, at the same time and to the tune of Sweet Georgia Brown. Joe Renzetti's musical score in this movie was beyond perfect. He captured the essence of the typical New York Italian family in every note!
I’m the same being Italian American the film is incredibly accurate! One instance in the beginning during cousin sals wake despite the family’s grief it’s just the culture to have homemade food for the repass! And I think it’s Doms best film cause it shows his great skill to make you laugh and cry almost in seconds, I think when people list great actors especially Italian American ones I feel like he doesn’t get his fair share which he should!! I’ve always gotten mad when he died there really wasn’t much attention towards it like I think it was on the news once and that was it, maybe the family wanted it that way but even at the film awards when they show the actors who passed that year I don’t even recall seeing his name show up.
I watch Fatso every couple of years and still laugh and cry each time. Also, in case you haven’t seen it, check out Mel Brooks’ laugh-out-loud funny “The 12 Chairs”. Besides Fatso, it’s DeLuise’s most wonderful role.
I really have a weak spot for sweets... well, food in general but those cakes, pies..., tv food commercials... it's driving me insane thinking I cant eat one So, I'll pass watching this for the sake of me sanity
I watched this movie many years ago and remember it well the scene where Dom has the hotdog in his mouth ans makes eye contact with the love interest is priceless
Damn I remember that poster being one of the last on the theatre that’s closed near my house...that poster stayed up forever after the theatre closed...I read it everyday for a while on the walk home from school...🍕🍔🌭🥓🥞🌮🧆🥪🧀🍞🥯🥐🍳🧁🍦🍨🎂🍿🍪🍩🍫🍰🧁🍕🍟🍔🌭🥓🥩🍗🍖🧇🥞🧈🍳
I watched this anytime it aired on HBO in the summer of 1994. It's a pretty funny movie, and as soon as I saw this video, I immediately thought of the "You ate the ONY!" scene.
Dom was always an inspiration to me growing up. Sadly I don't have very fond memories of this movie. I've been overweight my whole life due to a genetic condition only my aunt didn't believe it was genes. She believed it was because I just loved food. She would play this for me over and over making me watch it until I would cry. I would feel so terrified I'd be big my whole life...and I was right. I still am. As hard as I try I can't get myself under 400lbs. I used to weight close to 800 and from 2010 to now i've come down to 448lbs but despite my constant exercise and strict diet it just won't go away. I can't even get surgery. People don't understand how hard it is to be overweight. How humiliating and painful it is.
I really feel for you. I got genetically lucky and have been trim most of my life. I sometimes have been on medication that causes tremendous weight gain and it is horrible. I realize that for many people every day is like that for them. I hope you find love and support to help you do the best that you can.
You know, I don't understand why people prioritize being skinny over being happy or being content. Some people are just not meant to be skinny! My dad pushed my sister around on this matter for 20 years, until she had a mental break down. I think it was at that point that he realized what a huge jerk he was being towards her and now he doesn't mention it anymore. I wish he had realized that when she was a little kid, though. I'm so sorry you went through this and I hope the best for you.
I never saw this movie, but I do remember seeing this movie all the time in the video store Fatso in red letters with a guy looking sad with a hot dog. I always looked at that cover and found it interesting maybe sad on some level being I was the fat kid at that time. I think having been just reminded of this movie I'll have to watch it now

My pictures of me , my friends and Dom are treasured . We had such a blast with him we all went out for Pizza and talked for hours and Dom and I remained in contact until the day he died.
I remember when it came out and I really wanted it to be a hit, but it was panned by critics and I was too young to go to movies by myself (junior high school)
Anne Bancroft certainly got the TV food time period correct. those food commercials were on all the time in the '70's. Mel should of had more than just a little input;this movie is just flat. Dom tried his best but the material was just not good enough.
My dad showed me this movie a couple of years ago and I'm glad that finally someone else knows about it and finally mentions it. By the way, the scene where Dom Deluise goes crazy and pulls out a knife on that guy and starts chasing him with it is mad funny.
As an Italian American Millennial from NJ, this movie was a staple in my parents' house. If we're all together, there's a chance someone will throw it on.

I also come from an Italian American family and this movie is a cult classic in our family. Including telling many jokes from it at all family gatherings.."You ate the ONY!!!”
I've been looking for this movie for ages. This was reviewed really well. You explained enough without giving too much of the movie away and showed a good number of scenes. I've watched a other peoples reviews on UA-cam where the reviewer basically gives the entire plot away.
I'm not Italian but of Russian/Polish Jewish ancestry and I loved this film and you described it very well! The entire cast is fantastic with Dom Deluise a treasure in this film and Anne Bancroft did a fabulous job with not just her fine acting and superb script, but her direction was stellar. It's tricky to blend the comedy and emotion but she handled it like a top-notch experienced director. One of my favorite films and thank you so much for posting about it!
Jewish or Italian - a bei gezundt (as long as you’re healthy). I love how so many of the Italian-American commenters say that Fatso is a family favorite. It’s such a tender, loving and flat-out hilarious film.

"I don't want to be picky, but...Dom DeLuise isn't really that fat." - Last line of Roger Ebert's review
Dom did get quite a bit fatter in the 80s-90s.
Roger was afraid the light might shine on him!

I loved when Dom goes to pick up the Chinese food and eats $40 worth of Chinese food on the way home!!!
Chinese sausage and narcissus bulbs
One of the few parts of this movie I caught on tv.
That’s actually one of the saddest parts of the film, he feels so alone and hurt inside that he eats his problems away and even disgusts himself
Crazy that they got 40 dollars of Chinese food and it was two bags u lucky to get soups and dumplings for 40
Now 40 dollars is the average door dash order
LOL, he wouldn't even qualify to play the role in 2020. He's too thin.

Also, "get the honey Junior " Ron Carey was great too,"I told you I didn't want any bread" and throws it on the floor.

I really like your channel man, could you do a look on Chris Farley or another comedy legend
Chris is coming next, but I have a lot of research to do still. Thanks for the support!
GET THE HONEY!!!!!
This is a movie you can watch multiple times a year.
One of the best UA-cam channels around, so glad you're keeping it up !
Looks like someone was "taking the piss" when they made this flick. Not surprised. Typical predictive programming.
“Take me with you sally boy...”
Just wanted to say I absolutely love the channel, every video is like a playlist of my favorite movies.
also ( hear no evil, see no evil ) is me suggestion. Pryor and Wilder are hilarious, hands down my favorite from the duo
My family loves this movie. Mille grazie, amico!
Wow, you've done 3 videos in this series so far and all 3 of them are movies I've never heard of.
Yes, is a little known cult classic, Dom is really fantastic and you go from the laugh to the sadness with him; thanks for review it!
Thanks for watching!
I watched this movie years ago, didn't remember the name but the part where his helpers come over I'll never forget. Yes a very good movie for sure.
Never heard of it but I've been looking for a movie from earlier Dom Deluise where he plays the lead, so thanks!
Hope you enjoy it!
