    When ppl say how low crime rates used to be.. I often wonder how accurate that is. We have to take a few things into consideration. How well was crime recorded and documented and kept? How often was crime even spoken about? How easy was it to get away with something compared to the present day? I wouldn’t be surprised if the crimes rates were about the same honestly. Same crimes, different times!

    • @AlottaBoulchit
      @AlottaBoulchit 5 років тому +85

      Given the way he wrote about her death in his diary I would venture to guess he was a sociopath. He might not have cared one way or the other about killing her and just did it cause he could. Personally I think there was probably a perverse intention in his taking her and the murder was to cover the evidence or the murder itself could have been for perverse enjoyment.
      Him claiming insanity or drunkenness sound like just attempts to get off the hook should either excuse actually work in his favor.
      I'm glad he was hung but it would have been more fitting if they'd let the father execute him via a one man firing squad...but probably for the best. The father didn't need that weight on his shoulders with everything else.

      I myself have heard a colleague use the phrase on occasion (also not with its original meaning but as an alternative to 'dear me!', or 'wtf, are you doing') and he is not yet forty. So, he might be an oddity, or the use simply depends on various factors, like social and geographical background or the like. If it crops up in a conversation ask if they actually know what it’s from and get them to research, they’ll shortly stop using it. I just don’t think it’s enough of a phrase to get “cancelled” so to speak when it already has done out of becoming outdated

My parents and grandparents have used it jokingly when we ask what is for dinner, or what we are getting for christmas, both versions. I always wondered how we started using the name Fanny as an insult, a name for female genitals, and also as a term for mucking around and doing nothing (fannying about). They was so young just babies and toddlers at the time the little Victoria was killed by someone who was supposed to love her she was 8 years old holly and jessica murders in solham April and sarah murders by pedophilies frightened me they was just kids out playing. Thats what me and my sister used to do was play out in the parks or walk to school or to the shops by ourselves in the 1990s and 2000s there was so many children being harmed and killed by their parents or loved ones. Few was killed by strangers there was has been always fear of stranger danger not to talk to strangers but its usually its parents grandparents aunts uncles and family friends people who know the children can be abusers or murderers. I wanted my brother to be in at a certain time when holly and Jessica was murdered by the school care taker i didnt want my brother going out on his own in fact i dont think he did go out unless i was with him in the garden only it made me paranoid about him coming to harm. Like, if someone didn't wanna go swimming would you say "aww come on Nathalie Wood" or if your kid was dawdling whilst shopping with you you wouldn't say "hurry up Bulger" would ya? It's sick and disturbed. The fact she's long since buried doesn't change her suffering. 😭💕

    I love old cases like these! It's probably just because I'm obsessed with older eras, but I find them to be more mysterious and interesting. I'm absolutely not telling you to do more of these, but if you enjoy making videos about old cases I would def watch the hell out of them.
    Also, I think crime must have been worse back in that time. The only difference being that most were labeled natural or suicides and because they didn't have the technology we have today they could never say otherwise. We touched this in a Sociology class before. And that media was nothing like today, so people didn't know of crimes that took place. It always makes me think of The Lovely Bones and how she said that only pretty white girls were made known when they go missing, even though others were definitely victims. Perhaps cases like these get sensualized because it was obviously a murder, and it was pretty obvious who had done it. Doesn't hurt that she was a little girl.
    Maybe that's why I'm so obsessed with old cases, because they were handled so much different than they are today. Also, back in the 19th century and younger, they seem to be much more brutal which is also very interesting.
    Anyway, I'm rambling. I love you and thank you fo all you do. I know I've said this before, but it's always true.
    And I don't blame you at all for putting the phrase explanation on here. I mean, if anything is distasteful it's me as a child happily singing the Lizzie Borden song. So I could never judge lmao

    • @bq419
      @bq419 6 років тому +5

      Exactly, she said crimes didn't happen, which is obviously not true, it simply wasn't reported or known as much

    • @sewageskank6730
      @sewageskank6730 6 років тому +7

      Beatrice Quaglieri Totally! It was so hard to solve crimes due to lack of knowledge and technology. It was hard to even decipher what was a crime or not. And it's really hard to spread the news when it took a week just to receive a letter.
      The amount of crime that was underreported back then is sky high, I'm sure.
      I understand why people think crime didn't happen in older eras, because that's how it seems, but it was entirely due to murders not being reported or not cared about. I'm sure people back then felt safer murdering others because of this? I mean, I haven't looked too much into this, but it seems like that is something that would happen. It was easier to get away with it. I'm just using her as an example because I mentioned her previously, but Lizzie was found innocent despite having so much circumstantial evidence against her. It was so difficult to prove anything for certain. She was let free despite everything. (also sidenote, I'm not saying for sure that she committed those crimes, but there are some things abt the case that's hard to ignore)
      I remember watching a doc on some family from centuries ago, and how the young child would kill people with axes for fun and it proved him worthy of being royalty. Like people had very narrow views on ethics back then. So I am certain crime was so much more common back then.

    • @lisamcdonald2877
      @lisamcdonald2877 6 років тому +3

      About Lizzie Borden, part of the reason she was found not guilty was the tgen popular idea that women were weaker and more delicate than men. She appeared to grow faint when crime scene photos were shown in court. Also, she was from a more affluent family in the town, always an advantage.
