  • Time to embark on the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix reaction!
Badd Medicine here and its Harry Potter reaction time! Now in his fifth year at Hogwarts, Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) learns that many in the wizarding community do not know the truth of his encounter with Lord Voldemort. Cornelius Fudge, minister of Magic, appoints his toady, Dolores Umbridge, as Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, for he fears that professor Dumbledore will take his job. But her teaching is deficient and her methods, cruel, so Harry prepares a group of students to defend the school against a rising tide of evil.
This movie was a dang tone setter! This movie was just amazing for Harry Potter. A must watch for anyone who is a fan and just getting to these movies. Even just the movie intro was a dark and intense setting for Harry Potter! and what a heartbreaker for the death scene of Sirius Black. Awesome movie!!!

I think the reason she's hated more than Voldemort is that Voldemort is (at least up until #6) closer to being a force of nature than a character. It's hard to hate the wind for blowing, y'know?
Meanwhile, Dolores Umbridge is very much a grounded human being who has the capacity to do good, but actively chooses evil instead - and not even "useful" evil that could be spun as pragmatism; she's *needlessly* malevolent, and I think it's that sense of mourning what *could* have been that incites such fury when we see her onscreen or read the books.

Every prediction made by Trelawney is correct. All the little ones that make her look like a hack are misinterpreted, but absolutely correct. "The Grimm" is a prediction of Sirius. Ron's "You're going to suffer, but you're going to be happy about it." is likewise about Harry meeting Sirius. Trelawney's comment to Neville about his grandmother was correct. She tells Umbridge "You are in grave danger.", remember the Centaurs? And the books have even more. She's a terrific character.

  • @kzbw

One detail that was changed from the books is how Harry wards off Voldemort when being possessed. In the movie it was the power of friendship, but in the books Harry thinks of his friends to no effect, and then he thinks "If I die, at least I'll get to see Sirius again" and at that instant Voldemort retreats. Voldemort can't stand to share Harry's GRIEF at losing Sirius, that's what drives him out.

It was love. Voldemort doesn't and can't feel love, it repels him and in its purest form is a powerful magic. It's an extension of how Lily protected Harry... that's one thing the movies couldn't/ didn't capture as well as the books.... the 'love' magic throughout.

In the books, Harry’s discovery that his dad bullied snape hit him really hard. He couldn’t help comparing it to him and Dudley. So he reaches out to Sirius and Lupin. They confirm that James was a bully in school but he grew out of it like so many do. Harry was worried that James coerced Lily into marrying him somehow since she hated him so much from the memory he saw. Sirius and Lupin reassured him that in the end James matured and they really did fall in love

@@ausetshnaiun8050 I don’t think his bullying should be excused. And Harry’s reaction to learning about his father’s juvenile behaviors is rightfully a reaction of incredible hurt and repulsion. But, it does show the room for growth and change. At the same time, while James is able to mature and grow (like many insecure bullies) it doesn’t dismiss the fact that his behaviors towards Snape left life-long scars. It’s a good lesson to children that bullying is not only a sign of immaturity and insecurity, but even once some bullies grow out of this behavior the harm they cause to others often leaves an indelible mark.

"I'm terribly sorry to have contradicte you, Minerva, but as you see from my note, Harry has been receiving very poor results in class with me --"
"I should have made myself plainer, " said Proffesor McGonagall, turning at last to look Umbridge directly in the eyes. "He has achieved high marks in all Defence Against the Dark Arts tests set by a competent teacher."
Proffesor Umbridge's smile vanished as sudden as a light bulb blowing
AKA if you think about that, McGonagall just said that the idiot Lockhart, is more competent than Umbridge. 🤣 Proffesor McGonagall is a QUEEN
She also kept offering Umbridge a cough drop for all her clearing her throat.
Oh and I leave you with this (the weasley twins and others trying to make Umbridge's life terrible with pranks lasts way longer in the books. Also Peeve's is a ghost who loves Mischief)
Harry witnessed Proffesor McGonagall walking right past Peeves, who was determinedly loosening a crystal chandelier, and could have sworn he heard her tell the poltergeist out of the corner of her mouth, "It unscrew the other way."

The first few chapters really captured what it looked like to be in a depressed state, which i found for me, helpful because it put into words what i was also feeling inside. And... At the ending scene, ends with a hopeful note, something worth fighting for. Like, yeah, you might be feel bad and really really not up for it, but you know what, there IS something Worth fighting for...

Let me actually explain this properly for you. People aren’t explaining the muggle thing.
What happens in the wizard world DOES affect the muggle world. The muggles just don’t know what’s going on. Wizards use charms and memory modification to cover up all wizarding activity that has been noticed by muggles.
There are only SOME things they don’t see. Like Dementors and charmed items like the knight bus.
Ron’s Dad’s ENTIRE JOB usually involves modifying muggle memories and fixing mishaps that have happened.
In the book they don’t fly down the river. They fly way up in the sky so nobody will see them. Sometimes they use charms that turn them almost invisible, but they can’t do this in the movie.
There are charms on hogwarts that make the building look abandoned to muggles, and also force them to turn around and go another direction, having suddenly remembered that they have something important to do. Cool stuff.

I actually hated the change from the book. A big part of Sirius' and Harry's relationship is navigating that awkward space of Sirius missing James so much but also making sure he doesn't turn Harry into a James 2.0. Their relationship is more that of a father and son than two best friends and it's something Sirius navigated really well in the books imo. Having Sirius call Harry James right before he dies actually takes away from his character because that means that in his mind, Harry is (partially) a James substitute. Harry often liked being compared to his father and having Sirius call him James would be something Harry would have been proud of but it's not what he needed. He needed a father figure who didn't see his dead friend but who saw him as Harry.

In the book, Hermione did an advanced magic called the Protean Charm on galleons (Wizard coin currency) and gave them to all the DA members so they could communicate and set dates for their DA lessons without having to talk to each other in the hallways since Umbridge and the Inquisitorial squad are keeping an eye on them. On the outside, it would look like a regular galleon with serial numbers so it does not look suspicious. If a date is set for another meeting, the coin will grow hot so the could feel it in their pockets, then the inconspicuous serial numbers would show the date of the meeting. One Ravenclaw DA member was so impressed with Hermione that he asked her why she wasn’t sorted into Ravenclaw since she’s clearly very smart. She answered that the sorting hat did consider putting her in Ravenclaw but in the end decided to sort her into Gryffindor. I guess her bravery outweighted her intelligence and for someone with Hermione’s brain, that’s saying a lot.

Unpopular opinion, but I think having Hermoine in Ravenclaw could have been a good thing, or at least it could have added a different dynamic to the story.
The other houses did not get a whole lot of representation even in the books beyond side characters, so it would've been interesting to see a super strong inter-house friendship of Gryffindor and Ravenclaw via having Hermoine in Ravenclaw instead.
If they had also had a hufflepuff or perhaps a good hearted Slytherin, could have been interesting as well to show the full depth of a House and how they aren't just defined by a single ideal.

I just found you guys and it's hilarious to see 3 grown ass men cheer for the mistletoe and "I must not tell lies" hahaha
The only real issue I had with what these movies excluded (until 1 thing in the very last but I'll save it) is that the prophecy wasn't truly explained, I felt.
Here's what I wished was included: Voldemort heard part of the prophecy "The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches, born as the 7th month dies (July) to parents who thrice defied him. The Dark Lord will mark him as his equal... etc etc"
Dumbledore tells Harry that Voldemort instinctively chose Harry, perhaps he saw Harry as the bigger threat because they're both Half-blood and Harry was born July 31. BUT there was another child born July 30th and his parents also defied Voldemort 3 times. While Harry's parents were killed.... the other parents were tortured into insanity after the Dark Lord fell (because his followers thought they'd know something). It was Neville who very nearly was chosen instead of Harry.
Here's extra info that the books have and I didn't really expect to come into the movies: 16 years before the end of Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore - on the edge of getting rid of the school subject, Divination - decided to interview Sybll Trelawney. He was not impressed. As he was leaving the interview... she fell into a trance (the same trance Harry witnessed in Prisoner of Azkaban) and she told Dumbledore that prophecy. He decided she can never leave Hogwarts. However someone overheard half of the prophecy but was kicked out - still giving Voldemort some of the info.
Funny info: in Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry tells Dumbledore about Trelawney's prophecy of Peter returning to Voldy. Harry asked if it was real and Dumbledore said "that makes her total of real prophecies ..2" not a direct quote.

The thing about the Avada Kedavra spell is that from a muggle's point of view, the person has toppled over and died - so it might be slightly 'mysterious', but not necessarily seen as a murder. In the fourth book you find out that when Voldemort murdered his father and grandparents decades ago, Frank, the old caretaker you saw at the beginning of the GoF movie, was taken into custody for murder - but since the police couldn't prove how the Riddles died, they had to let him go. Frank was treated as a murderer by everyone in the village for the rest of his life though - until Voldemort returned to the house that one night with Pettigrew and Barty Crouch and Frank went to check out the light (and was murdered himself).

Fun fact about that first scene. Grass in the UK generally dosent look like that (a lot more green normally) but the movie is actually set in 1995-1996 and in 1995 there was an actual drought in the UK and was statistically one of the driest summers we've ever had. One thing not sure was mentioned that is discussed in the books is why Voldemort chose Harry because in the books the prophecy could have meant 2 boys born as the 7th month dies whose parents had thwarted Voldemort 3 times.....Harry Potter or Neville Longbottom. Voldemort decided to go after Harry whose mother is muggleborn and dad was wizard born instead of Neville who was pure blood. He marked Harry as his equal with the scar. I do like the movies but to me they are a cliff notes version of the books just too much to be included. Voldemort is the reason why there is a different Defense Against the Dark Arts professor every year. Back in the 60's when Dumbledore first became the Headmaster of Hogwarts, Voldemort, still in the early days of trying to build a base of supporters, actually came to the school and asked to become the professor in that position. Of course, Dumbledore point blank refused for obvious reasons, and in retaliation Voldemort jinxed the job so that no teacher would last a year. Something ALWAYS goes wrong.

The movies have overlooked the “precautions “ that the wizarding world takes to be Hidden. In the books, Harry and the others flying on brooms in the city, they actually fly high up in the sky, into and out of clouds, to hide themselves from Muggles! Also they make themselves invisible by the Disillusionment Charm(a human chameleon). The Knight bus you saw in the Part 3 is also a magical bus, that requires minimal steering, it’s magical and jumps from one place to other, to the point that any object in the way jumps out of the way, to make way for the magical bus!Plus the bus is invisible to the Muggle eye, so are the Dementors!
