You know, at first the art style of One Piece is jarring but then you begin to notice the deliberate way it's done and from there work out the symbolism imbued into the work. Thanks for pointing that out as I never really noticed it until now.

I just wanted to say thank you for making these videos. Really well made and conveys a lot of valid and interesting points.
I wanna add to your points and say that Oda's exaggerated art style where he draws characters too ugly or too strange brings some unique opportunities where in other Mangas, it's quite easy to pluck out the relevant characters with how much effort went into their design and how much they stand out but Oda introduces side characters you would never imagine to be relevant but then becomes a key player in an arc or even in the grand scheme of things.

Captain Twice it's about ancient China Warring State Era, it's a journey about Qin region uniting China. It's heavilly militarized, most of the fights are on the battlefield and is a lot of fun . The art at the begining is not so good, but stick with it and it will improve drastically. And one last thing, the hype is going to be huuge on a certain war.

What I like most is how everything is messed up and made silly yet whimsical like the island with bubbles coming out of the ground and using bikes on them to travel.
I also enjoy the more abstract things like in Jojo where abilities are also more non linear and quirky same with One Piece where one girl uses colors to control a person or kicking the air to fly.
Swimming in anything like the ground, take soul essence and make other things living and singing?. And it's not always straight forward fights as Luffy complained about having to eat every time he wants to defeat an enemy in the Big Mom pirates which is ironically fitting for a group obsessed and only about sweets and sweet foods

Oda simply uses something that has commonly been used in the past, especially (but not only) in Middle Age's raffiguration: he uses hierarchical proportions.
In a lot of Christian iconography for example, you can notice that there is clear difference in scale between the more important figures (Christ of course, Virgin Mary and such), which are represented unnaturally big, and the less important ones, the common humans. A clear and beautiful example of this can be seen in 'Maestà of Duccio' by Duccio di Buoninsegna.
It is of course to visually convey the impression that those big figures are powerful and to be respected.
It's cool how it works perfectly in One Piece, you see a big character and you instantly know that this is not someone you can easily mess with!

Nice! If I may, I'd like to add some info...The western art was, before the renaissance, mainly produced with out of proportion figures. Thats because what was important at the time was to represent the greatness of holy characters such as Jesus or Mary. Or even war heroes and such... its so interesting to see this trend comming back to life in the hands of a Japanese mangaka. Art was never meant to be a perfect representation from real life. Rather, life is a tool, a basis to the production of worlds that comes from the artistic process. Life gives us references, both visual and intellectual ones, so we can make our own set of rules and interpretations. Art has only the limits we set to it. That's what makes it so incredible. Once we get in touch with it, we're able to perceive the world differently.
    Anyway nice video

What I mean by that is how ODA goes into certain themes and genres through the the theme he set up for a SH
    For example

Nami- magic, witch, weather, meteorology, etc

Thanks for sharing this; it's something interesting that never occurred to me, and it's definitely something that makes One Piece unique. I have a lot of material I want to cover so I can't promise that I will be making a video on this soon, or even devote a video specifically to this. BUT at the very least I added this concept to my general document of video ideas, and I will definitely be talking about it at some point one way or another (maybe included in a broader video topic).

  • @MugiNaru
    @MugiNaru 5 років тому

Also something that might explain a lot of things in the world of One Piece, especially the sizes of creatures and stuff - the world of One Piece is smaller than ours. It means it has a lower mass and lower gravitation, so living creatures can grow higher (as long as there enough % of oxygen in the atmosphere, and thanks to the large trees, I'm pretty sure there's enough), island structures can be built without crumbling under their own weight, characters can lift stuff that in our world would be way to heavy and everyone can jump miles in to the air.
In our world Luffy would be the size of a roach I think. We can calculate the size of One Piece world thanks to the pictures of the maps of the entrance to grand line in Red Line and the scene when Mugiwara's actually entered it to find out the size of grand line at that point and then compare it to the rest of the world in world maps.

All these comments and I can't find anyone pointing out how the video is about exaggeration and he says "I know I've talked about a million different things" at the end. This is UA-cam, normally the comments are full of people just saying what the video said, but this time no one seems to have noticed this amazing pun!

One Piece has a LOT of characters. Being exaggerated helped me, us, remember them easier. It just works.

the technique of exaggerating anime proportions was famously done in Fist of the North Star for kenshiro's enemies too

Another observation, is that in pre new world segments and most notably earlier arcs, luffy was alot taller as well, often emitting a more imposing characteristic when towering over his enemies. Its very different to his more childlike appearance from the majority of the series. I wonder if this is a style that oda sort of intentionally changed for the main character.

Gear 4 making Luffy so big kinda throws the idea of the underdog out the window, that's why i wasn't so crazy about it at first but since the villians are still bigger tha him i guess the point still stands

They use the same height concept, in a slightly but similar way in the Keys the Kingdom series by Garth Nix. The more powerful, or important OR perfect the person. The taller they are than the rest. Even the main character near the end, when becomes the architect, goes through a transformation. Perfect skin, tan, taller; More perfect.

lil tip: dont stretch out the images horizontally or vertically, but proportionally to both, it's very noticeable, especially when you're talking about hugely tall characters and you show me a squashed whitebeard.

This makes it even more likely that Luffy will have a giant form. As the future Pirate King it only makes sense that he be metaphorically and literally "larger than life".

Gear third does grant him have limbs the size of giants, not the size of a giant's limb, but the size of a full giant. Gear fourth Bounceman gives him a height a bit over 4 m tall, even more in the form of Tankman.

All irrelevant. I'm talking about a full body G3 kind of giant form. Not a "little" extra height from G4.
