      ahah yes, that line from the Beyond Blood video of Craftsdwarf was incredible. It's crazy how his video and the WCI analysis of Morj have make me love the Luffy vs Katakuri fight 10 times more than before and it was already a fight that i found very good.

      @@furorteutonicus9045 I would 100% give credit to someone else if I am referencing an observation made by them that I hadn't thought of!
      However, no disrespect to Craftsdwarf, but that didn't seem like a "new" idea to me when I heard it in his Beyond Blood video.
      Even if he has already made the point about Luffy always bouncing back like rubber in one of his videos, if I've also had that thought and have more to say on it then I'm not going to hesitate to make that point as well in my videos and expand on it! To be clear: I make a mental distinction between if someone is making a point that I have already thought of versus if someone is making a point that I have not thought of.
      For example, in that same video, Craftsdwarf made a point I had NOT thought of, which is that Katakuri is mochi, which does NOT bounce back like rubber. It stays in the shape that it's beaten into. That was new to me, and that really highlighted the differences between the two characters that I had never considered. I thought that was a unique observation he made, which is why I would NEVER mention that in any of my videos without giving credit to him. Even though I thought it was a very interesting point, I didn't put it into my WCI video, as this was somebody else's observation.
      I just want to be clear on this stuff, as there are other OP and manga analysts who are all coming up with interesting observations on the series, and I don't want to step on anyone's toes.

      Thank you for your honesty dude. but don't worry what Furor and I were saying was not on a serious tone (at least not for me), personally i don't have any problem if more than one people make the same observation about a situation in One Piece, it's normal to repeat something if that fits in your analysis too.

    Now that I think about it, the Mirror World could be a metaphor for Luffy's and Katakuri's similar personalities and the respect they have for one another.

      Of course

    • @redx589
      @redx589 6 років тому +326

      Well duh. Their fight had several themes. Willpower, the nature of family, success and failure, fighting experience vs fighting ability etc.
      But the key theme to understanding the fight was in fact "mirrors". The fight was mainly one of self-reflection and introspection. So think of this fight as two people looking in a mirror and reflecting on their flaws. Oda leans into this theme pretty heavily by having Katakuri mirror Luffy's moves at the start of the fight and then has Luffy mirror Katakuri by seeing into the future, then Katakuri in turn mirroring Luffy's wound by inuring himself and then the two mirror eachother when using conqueror's Haki. They both also reflect each other as characters. Both fighters paralleled one another to contrast their strengths and weaknesses and the areas they needed to improve in order to continue protecting their respective families. Luffy's weakness is shown in his inferiority to Katakuri in terms of fighting ability, and Katakuri's weakness is shown in his fear of failure and his inability to accept that failure and keep going the way Luffy can. After realizing their weaknesses they both work to overcome it, abandoning logic and reason in the process. Instead of running away as logic would dictate Luffy chooses to overcome his weakness by seeking to match Katakuri's future sight. In the same way, Katakuri instead of using Mole, and his awakening, throws away his weapon and gimps himself and decides to fight without fear of failure or shaming his family.
      And Katakuri wasn't ashamed of his mouth. It's just that his image needed to be protected above all else. Or so he believed. What he really feared was shaming his family and being unable to protect them because of it. Once he saw that Luffy was able to protect his own "family" without fear of shame, or ridicule it made him do the same.

    THIS, this is a REAL analysis of One Piece, not just "I like or dislike this" or "I think it went like like this or it should've gone like this" or mistaking speculating about future plot for analysis like most one piece tubers do (not naming names). You actually go indepth with the material to support your conclusions and made me realize things about the story that I had in the back of my mind but could never fully articulate, bravo.
    I'm however curious about why you think Luffy vs Lucci is a very different battle compared to other Luffy battles though? That fight had very clear theming with freedom vs opression and considerable build up since Water 7 (Luffy constantly getting stuck between walls and eventually breaking them all down for example).

    • @crimsoncrystal4864
      @crimsoncrystal4864 6 років тому +47

      I think the reason why he thought Luffy vs Lucci was different is probably because Morj couldn't find an environmental element that fits the fight. Although, from the way I see it, when Lucci finally got knocked out, we got to see his scar on his back (which is not a coincidence that his scar looks exactly like the world government symbol) which symbolizes Luffy spitting in the face of the world government.

    Well, as many people say: Lucci symbolized the inevitable and unbreakable wall all people who pursue their dreams or freedom or even both must face eventually, and what Luffy did was knock him down with a repeated rapidfire attack of stubbornness and will power that also destroys the literal wall that was behind Lucci. And in the next episode, the lack of that destroyed wall is what allows Robin to throw the paralyzed Luffy to the sea where Going Merry was waiting to take them to their next destination.

      Very well said about Enies Lobby's final fight. I would also throw in that one of the biggest things about Luffy vs. Lucci, in addition to that, is their fight during the Buster Call, the event that initially crippled Robin and the very catalyst that caused the events of Water 7, had Luffy preserving through the "unbeatable" Buster Call and the embodiment of "Dark Justice" that Lucci represented. Just my 2 cents. ^^

      Trollfighting is amazing when done right, and One Piece is the only series I've seen that makes it consistently great. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure has some signs (Oingo Boingo episode and then Boingo+Hol Horse are the prime examples of this), but Araki tends to slide back into seriousness too quickly for it to have any lasting effect, so Oda wins this one.

    And one thing I like about One Piece fights is that they begin naturally as a result of the story. There's no contrived setup such as those you see in Dragon Ball where one character says "come this way if you want a fight" and then a massive staredown occurs.

    • @rhondahoward8025

      This is what I was was saying too in a comment. Fights in One Piece always serve some narrative purpose. They happen for a _reason_ and that's what makes them feel so important. Hell, by the time it comes to blows, you know that this was the natural conclusion.
      So when Luffy tells Sogeking to burn that flag to declare war on the World Government, you know everything was leading to that point to free and save Robin. There was nothing arbitrary about that act at all.

    Fantastic analysis!
    I agree with most, but I actually have to differ about a few points. I don't think One Punch Man's choreography is necessarily better than One Piece's. Murata has nice impactful standalone pages, but he overuses them to the point of serious detriment. OPM has had a major problem of a slow pace for years now and I think it's largely because Murata can't draw brief action sequences but instead has to fill every fight with full page panels. I much prefer how mangakas like Oda and Toriyama use actual panel layouts and the flow between panels for their action.

      @@blues4509 They definitely are more fun when you can binge them, but it's not just a matter of pace. There's a lot of interesting ways that mangaka can use page layouts and how they arrange panels to give the action an interesting flow and convey additional ideas. I wish OPM would take more advantage of that, even if there's also artistry in the full page panels and what they can accomplish.

      @Waifu -Kun Really??I don't agree at all....Oda is one artist whoses actions scenes,the way he conveys impact, angles he chooses I find very exciting and impressive.....Compare odas fight scenes to that of toyotaro in the dbs manga.Toyotaro uses literal flat side angles for every damn fight in his manga and its really stale.And toyotaro doesnt understand how to make a blow feel impactful either....His drawings are way to damn stiff so he cant make a character reel back and throw a decent impactful punch visual without it coming off as stiff and awkward. Oda's art is flexible...sonhe can make more impactful attacks.....and he draws the fighting from a variety of angles......

      Oda=Quality fight panels

    One Piece not focusing heavily on tactics isn't really a "weakness", it's called having different priorities than something like HxH. It's more or less a matter of personal preference at that point.

      P. Castaneda yeah, I think it’s sort of unfair to hold everything to the same gold standard. One Piece’s straight up Brawls and quirky fights with comedic strategies honestly fits the series tone better than HxH abilities that require full chapters of third-person narration for the reader to understand (Not that there’s anything inherently wrong with HxH, but it has its style and so does One Piece)

    • @evangeliondrugs4856
      @evangeliondrugs4856 6 років тому +24

      I feel like it’s fine to not like one piece’s fights because they lack strategy, but when you’re at the point that you’re criticizing them and holding that up as a weakness it’s like... you’re criticizing one piece for having different goals than another manga. You’re basically saying “this is nice but it’d be better if it was HxH”, and I sort of feel like that misses the point of what makes both series styles unique.

    The Will of the fight.
    The fighting in One Piece is one-dimensional because such is life when it comes to fights. In reality most people in a fight will either punch, kick, use a weapon, win with wit, or a combination of 2, 3, or all 4. Most of us aren't quick with the physics and science or are properly trained fighters. The serious fights in life are either emotionally charged or situationally intense. It's a pirate story so brawls, riots and being up close and personal are what it's all about. Real life pirates are typically only trained on a gun or sword and think on their feet. I'd only expect fights to be more complex and strategic from One Piece when it comes to characters that have specific DF abilities/training or are very weak but clever. To me the intricate storytelling makes up for what could be bland punches, kicks and blades because it's all about context. What they are fighting for will decide how they will fight for it , so it will allways boil down to how much a person is willing to do to win the fight and that "why" behind the will is what makes a fight a fight. Oda making the fights be just brawls in its basic form was and is intentional imo.
    *
    Though, I still do very much want to see a character that mainly fights with quick physics and science w/o a DF ability.

    Not fully related but I would like to share that Zoro's Ryuma and Mr.1 fights are among the best and most choreographed in the entire series, well surpassing any of Sanji's fights. The choreography and panels all flowed so well together and were incredibly entertaining- especially with the panels that weren't featured in the anime such as his crab attack being a beheading and witnessing it slash right across Mr.1's throat. The Ryuma fight as well was much better in the manga, and although I've watched the fight plenty of times in the past (I actually dislike the anime version of it, which I was exposed to first), reading it honestly kept me on edge. That's just how good it is. Too bad Oda never kept the same level of choreography throughout the rest of the series. Great video btw.

    It is also the reason why Toei can be so lazy with One Piece and still be watchable, because Oda did all the heavy lifting for them by making the fights so intense and the climaxes so satisfying through theming and set-ups that the lazy animation is barely noticed.

One Piece fights (with exceptions) were never the flashiest or jaw-dropping choreography wise, but they were all unforgettable, because the stakes were so personal and the storytelling so layered. I will NEVER forget Usopp and Luffy's duel over the Going Merry just for one example. There was so much more going on under the surface of that fight and the ending was devastating for everyone involved. That's another thing One Piece gets right. There's always a COST to fighting. It's never mindless. It always serves some sort of purpose.

    I think luccis' fight has a very good and meaningful setup. Eyepatchedwolf does a very good analysis of it. Lucci represents the crude reality of an obstacle too big to overcome, and its the one last thing separating Luffy from stopping Robin's inevitable end. He literally fights Lucci, the last obstacle, in the room which last door leads to his goal. It's the first arch that focuses on the theme of defying pre-established order, which is one of the core features of Luffy and the Pirate King
