    Matt Garstka is just disgusting in the best way possible. This dude probably just showed up with a click , starting jamming, and called it a performance. Nonetheless it was still phenomenal. Oh man. I'm excited to see where Garstka will be in two decades.

  • @MoonRegolith
    @MoonRegolith 8 років тому

    My top 3: Anika Nilles CRUSHES it at 0:07. She's too good to have been put first in this compilation! Ndugu Chanclear at 5:31 puts on a next-level drum clinic with a level of focus and class that every drummer should aspire to! Close your eyes when listening to Ralph Humphrey at 6:25 as he sounds like he could be playing a masterpiece for a Russian Ballet!
    Honorable Mention: Dave Elitch has become one with the music at 1:26. Don't let the simplicity of the beat fool you. His playing is utterly transporting!

      +HireAStudio Bar the Anika she is rad.

    • @theonewhodrums
      @theonewhodrums 8 років тому +4

      +HireAStudio She's a good drummer to be sure. But I think there's a little bit of a double standard in effect. My first impression was "wow, not many women can drum that way" which is of course sexist, but probably backed by data (generally speaking the drumming world is SATURATED with males.) However if she were a man, my initial reaction would have been.. meh, maybe it's this particular video/sound, but she seems severely dynamically lacking. Yes, Garskta indeed shits on everyone.

      Still better than Anika's negative tilt, which is the best possible way to crack your cymbals

    • @Ironsvillage
      @Ironsvillage 8 років тому +1

      +Nicola Righetto true, but i could never play the cymbals like that. Mine are just ever so slightly tilted towards me, it's just way easier to crash em like that in my opinion.

    • @nicolarighetto3767
      @nicolarighetto3767 8 років тому +1

      I agree, mine are also slightly tilted, because i need just the right angle to crash without breaking them. That drummer used such an extreme tilt because he played a jazz-like genre which requires less volume. In this case, he hits the cymbals with the tip of the drumstick for a clear and controlled sound

    The Sakae and Yamaha drums had the cleanest, most resonant sound. The Mapex kits were very "thuddy," muddy in comparison. Of course, who knows how the sound guy affected this, head selection, tuning, etc.

      @gmorton916 8 років тому +1

      I agree that groove IS important--but hell if u got chops and can use them in the right context --there's something 2 b said 4 that also

    • @mattdrewdrums
      @mattdrewdrums 5 років тому

      Metal drumming is based on pretty much speed alone. A lot of these drummers are no doubt fast, but play in a very interesting way. The problem is only people who understand percussion to a certain point can really decifer what's interesting about a groove being played so fast.

    • @rene1OOO3
      @rene1OOO3 8 років тому +2

      +goatstaog +Sean Meister What are you all on about? You all know PASIC is a percussion convention, right? It would only make sense that the clinics feature insight into the instrument (which they did, I was there) and a showcase of the clinicians skills among those who can appreciate those skills (other drummers!). I completely disagree with "over playing". They're soloing over tunes (and metronomes), like how do you over play that? lol.
      Gartzka is far from sloppy dude idk what you video you were watching. When's your PASIC clinic video coming out?

    • @tbbanshee8516
      @tbbanshee8516 8 років тому

      +goatstaog you must be god at drumming when you say matt garstka is sloppy.

    • @mountainhobbit1971
      @mountainhobbit1971 8 років тому

      I never said anything about anyone being sloppy…I said I thought they over played…just a personal opinion…matt is not at all sloppy, I just do not like filling every space with a drum beat…it shows amazing skill but for me it lacks taste.

    • @rene1OOO3
      @rene1OOO3 8 років тому +1

      +Sean Meister Read the comment chain. The sloppy bit wasn't directed at you. Taste is subjective and drumming is very personal. It's like listening to any other instrumentalist in jazz express themselves through the instrument. No one else plays like them because no one else is them. The very same principle applies to drums and drummers.

    90% sound all the same. Why has drumming become about the same gospel chops over and over. The old guys still understand playing musically but heaps of new guys just sound the same to me. Fast, slamming chops with no reason or taste. Getting really boring.

    • @sticktrik
      @sticktrik 8 років тому +1

      Yes, man!!...you're 100% correct...All the same
      boring fast backbeat type of shit!! This is why
      I cannot listen to drummers coming up today.
      When are they going to realize that a snare drum
      and all the components of the drum set can
      produce more than one sound! It's getting
      really boring & sad to hear a snare drum only
      hit hard in the centre with no finesse, touch,
      sensitivity or dynamics!!!! The only true
      players for me were Guliana & Humphries!!
      They stood out because..you can tell they studied
      from the drummers who developed the instrument from the start!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • @rene1OOO3
      @rene1OOO3 8 років тому

      +Peter Thoms >90% sound all the same
      You must have some terrible ears.

    • @peterthoms2725
      @peterthoms2725 8 років тому

      Maybe i do rene10003. It's just my opinion. I play double bass, piano, drums and percussion and grew up in a very musical family. If the music needs a simple touch i play what is needed with no flash. My taste in music is very old school as i don't get most modern stuff as i find it has no soul. Not everything is about the notes you play. Great beauty in space which i think is missed these days. Finding the right tone for a tune means more to me the me the how many notes i can fit in a bar. I have no idea of the music you love any why you love it. This is just my opinion. You have every right to have your own.

    • @rene1OOO3
      @rene1OOO3 8 років тому

      +Peter Thoms That's cool, I've been playing drums for about 20 years and am about to graduate with a degree in percussion performance. Just because there's a lot of notes doesn't mean there's no meaning behind them . It's raw self expression, it's a drum solo, if the urge to shred around the kit (young people with stamina, who knew!) and they have the capacity to do it in spectacular fashion, then why not? Why do they have to fit your parameters as far as what is and isn't acceptable?
