New Travel Rules Affecting Cruise Travelers in 2025
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 гру 2024
- New travel rules and requirements are coming into affect in early to mid 2025. If you're flying to your cruise port, it's important to be aware of the various updates. In this video I go over changes to international as well as domestic air travel, which is important for cruise travelers. I also go over changes in carry-on luggage rules for one airline, significant to many cruisers, as well as a positive update for travelers who may have lost luggage.
UK ETA is 10 £ (not Euros)
If you're going on a Mediterranean cruise in 2025 which departs from a country within the EU, or a British Isles or other cruise that leaves from the UK, you'll learn about both the ETIAS & UK ETA. We also go over information for US travelers who will need Real ID for domestic air travel.
If you are wondering if you need a passport to cruise, I share information about the requirements, as well as passport travel rules.

Merry Christmas! Thanks so much for the new travel rules for travelers… I will be traveling UK this year. I paused your video, googled UK visas and immigration…. And within 3 minutes I processed ETA application, which was so easy…just needed my passport and smartphone and email address. $13 US payment .. all steps online. Received approval from UK government within an hour. The visa is going until Jan 2027!
Thanks for bringing this visa info to my attention!!!
…”good until Jan 2027”
I’m watching the rest of your video!!!

That’s fantastic! You’re all set for your trip to the UK!
Excellent summary of the changes which will affect most of us. Thanks for a fine job.
I'm not understanding the carry-on. You get with your ticket one carry-on and one personal bag. People that have more than that should be the ones paying extra regardless of how much their economy ticket costs. I've had to check my carry-on at the gate a couple times because the bins were full of people's stuff that was way more than the 2 smaller bags they were "allowed" to bring on board. Penalize the people creating the problem, not some poor person that is just trying to go visit Grandma for the last time.
I understand. With this, AC would not be including a carry on with an economy ticket (for many routes). Only personal bag
Drives me nuts! I just got my little kids these cute carry on roller bags! Now we can only use them for road trips 😢
@@LifeWellCruised Porter also does it know and I expect that most compagny will do it too and I do agree that most of the carry on problem is people having more than a personal bag and carry on and the Airline never doing anything about it but forcing economy class people that get on the plane later in the boarding process to gate check
those personal bags have grown as big as carry-on bags or they brig 2 personal bags, coats and all sorts of crap
@JennyLeigh2001 I would still think every ticket would allow a roller bag, kids size roller bag is much smaller too.
Merry Christmas 🎄 🎄 Ilana and family! All the best for 2025. Thank you for all your great travel info and updates. As a Canadian that flies AC, the amount of carry on luggage is mind boggling! Every flight we've been on for awhile now, they make an announcement, that there is too much carry on and would anyone like to check their carry on for free.I get some people are maybe doing carry on only to save the cost of checking luggage, but it's getting ridiculous. Even kids seem to have to have their own carry on. Oh well first world problems. Cheers from London, Ontario.
You’re right, lots of carry ons!! Although with the cost of flights in Canada I can see why people are trying to save where they can. Thanks neighbour 👋
You should see what they try and drag on small commuter flights in Europe. Been on small maybe 50 seater prop planes. Luggage space is mimimal. Yet people will roll up with a cabin bag, back pack, handbag and gawd knows what else. Just ridiculous. Airlines need to get ruthless on this.
@@carolinelane9599 Exactly-agree!
My carry on is always within allowed size. You never know when they'll enforce their size requirements.
On 99% of flights, they ask for volunteers to check bags. I often do it on purpose when I already have a bag checked. A second bag is even more expensive to check.
As a vertically challenged person, it's hard to reach the overhead. It's a drag on the rare occasion there's enough room in the overhead and my scheme is foiled.
This video was extremely helpful! My family and I will be traveling on a cruise from Athens to the Greek Isles and I really appreciate your timely and informative videos. Keep up the good work!😊

You must remember that these new restrictions to enter UK and Europe (ie applying for a visa) is what we Europeans have been having to do for years to enter the USA.

Good information. My wife and I downloaded the UK ETA app and completed the application in about 5 minutes. Very quick and easy (note - it scans the chip on your passport which is on the back on newer US passports). We each received approval in exactly 16 minutes! By the way, the cost us 10£ - not € :)

@@Lightfighter1 wonderful, and thanks for the clarification- I mispoke :)
Westjet is charging for carryons if you have a Basic Economy fare. If you pay a bit more for an Econoflex fare you can have a carryon plus one checked bag.
@@lalenya1983 thanks for sharing
A great overview of the current and impending travel requirements for 2025! Thanks.
We are going on a 12-day cruise from Southampton on the X Apex to Belgium and Norway. In addition to trying to determine the ETA/ETIAS issues, we also discovered the passport requirements for the UK (passport must be valid for "duration of your stay") and the Schengen area (valid 3 months after your departure date from the Schengen Area) - something to watch as other countries require at least 6 months validity after your intended tavel dates.
There is also a minimum number of pages needed to enter some countries. We had to replace ours about 1.5 years early.
@@Reed-2big That is also something to watch for sure and can very easily be overlooked. With these new changes, though, that may not be as much of a concern because you won't get as many stamps in your passport in the future.
@ I had a expanded passport with 2-3 visa in it. No, I’m not going back to China so that’s a couple of pages. But even Abu Dhabi who was using biometrics still stamped my passport! This passport was issued when you only got entry and exit stamps for the EU, so not many there. And my visa for india wasn’t in this passport either. And hopefully I won’t get another stamp for entering and exiting St Maartin, as that was a family emergency. But this passport will have one for Barbados.
I’m not sure which stamps you thinking are dropping, but I’m sure both Argentina and Australia stamped my passport even though they required an electronic form be signed and printed.
My husband and I are embarking on our first cruise in January 2025! We'll be exploring Spain 🇪🇸 and Morocco 🇲🇦. Your videos have been incredibly informative, and we've learned so much. Thank you for sharing your expertise! Wishing you a wonderful holiday season!

If the air industry were not so greedy I would say sure but the aren't accommodating to their customers like delays cancelations it's just another charge prohibiting some people from flying

I’m so excited for you! Have an amazing cruise!
We just had a Thanksgiving flight on United. Basic economy allowed NO standard carry on. Thanks for the content.
Good to know! Ugghh
I know that the AC carry-on charge is infuriating, but necessary, as some people exaggerate with bringing multiple bags on board. I recently travelled to Europe with AC and I sat watching people coming on board with multiple bags and they get upset that they have no room in the bins above their seats! I’ve been travelling for 60 years and the level of stupidity & selfishness nowadays never ceases to amaze me! It was a matter of time that Air Canada would introduce a new policy on paying for carry-on luggage it’s getting ridiculous and the flight attendants are the ones that have to deal with this problem, it’s very stressful for them!
I don’t understand why the ground crew who is checking people in don’t do something about this…why do they let them thru?
@ Because most people register online, so no need to check in for a boarding pass. Then at the gate, the agent will only check boarding passes. They will announce that the plane is full and will take carry-ons for free, nobody moves! So the flight attendants are stuck with this inconvenience, it makes the flight late, and then they have to deal with unruly passengers. That’s exactly what happened on my flight.
It not people that are greedy. It’s the airlines who charge so much for every bag.
@@MichaelB-rs8ks not true. This is because of the behaviour of the passengers
@@MichaelB-rs8ksAgreed. I’m old enough to remember when there was no charge for checking your suitcase.
Merry Christmas, Ilana!!! Wow that is quite the change for Air Canada. I’m not sure how much I would enjoy that. And I had heard that some countries were going to a separate form online so that’s not as big of a deal but I really hope the US airline don’t follow suit. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas with your family And God bless.! Mary
Thanks for this video! I'll be sailing on the QM2 in June 2025 and just confirmed with them that even though I'm sailing roundtrip between NYC and Southampton, I will need a UK ETA simply to embark on the QM2 in NYC. Folks cruising with UK and European ports of call should definitely look into this for themselves!
The new Air Canada “no carry-on” rule follows Westjet’s own. It stems from the fact that a lot of us want to do carry on only and there not being enough space on board. Unfortunately, I still see many people putting more than one item and taking up more than one carry on space and this doesn’t seem to be policed by the flight attendants. It’s created a stressful situation for those of us who prefer a carry on only way to travel so I’m hoping that enough people will take these basic fares to alleviate some of the pressure on the overhead space.
It shouldn’t be up to the flight attendant, it should be the ground crew who are checking you into the plane…they are the last to see you before you board.
Great information thanks! My next cruise is on Celebrity Beyond in May 2025. Can’t wait!

Helpful indeed. Next cruise January.
Next cruise January here too! Yay, can't wait!
I think airlines are trying to get people to check bags again. Too many huge carryon bags, holds up boarding and deboarding process.
Or convince ppl to get their brand credit card to waive the cost for the 1st one 😅
It’s frustrating to have to wait for all the people who carry all those overhead bags onto a plane
JETBLUE is the worst with the big carryon's.
I think it’s just a money grab.
This started when they started charging for checked bags.

Dear Ilana, as always, you have the most useful information. I want to point out a small error in this video. You said that the UK ETA costs 10 Euros (€10). At this time the links are not yet there.

Simple solution to the carry-on madness. Stop charging for bags. It all started when they started charging for bags.
But the income, think of the lost income!

I applied to the ETA for the UK at the end of November prior to cruising into the UK in March (applications opened on 27 November). The application through the app is very easy (make sure you have your passport, and are able to take a photo (passport-style) with you when filling it out), and I received my approval within 15 minutes. Not all applications will be processed that quickly, but they do seem to be well organized.
Re E|TIAS. It is only the same as the ESTA that we have had to apply for when visiting the USA. From experience the response has been pretty quick - usually in around 24 hours. The important thing will all of these changes is not to book anything until you have your approval to travel.
Problem with that is some countries like say Singapore you cant do the paperwork until i think its 5 days out at the eatliest. Its sort of like your arrival card but you can still be knocked back. So you cant wait for approval before booking.
@@carolinelane9599 My comment was based on the experiences of people visiting the USA. Because this country can be a challenge for some to get approval it is generally advised to get clearance first before buying your ticket. A refusal could lead to losing a lot of money on airfare and hotels. Just too risky not to do this first in case you need a visa.
From the news reports, I understood the new Air Canada luggage rules were applicable only to travel within North America. Is it international too? And thanks so much for the links. @@CruisingwithCrystalandMarshall that’s amazing! You’ve got some really interesting travels planned. Merry Christmas & happy holidays to you as well 🎄
I think we pay enough for flights to not be charged for a carry on. However... I would love it if more people didn't bring all their carry on bags because it takes people so long to get off the plane. I usually upgrade my seats anyway so it really doesn't effect me a lot.
I think if airlines were following the carryon rules, there wouldn't be a problem. But a lot of people over step on those rules. Makes it frustrating for those that follow them.
Other airlines are doing this as well - Porter, Westjet, and many charter all inclusive trips are now also charging for carry on.
Merry Christmas from Texas, your video was most informative, thanks for the info.

@LifeWellCruised my passport expired and so did my state ID card so I've gotten myself in quite the pickle
The UK ETA will effect us when we head off in June 25 for our Regal Princess British Isles Cruise but $20 isn’t too bad considering If was dearer for our Canada & American ETAs back in 2015
Howdy Ilana, subscribed and even hit the like button. Like to start and end at NYC. Thinking about a repositioning cruise though. EES replacing passports? With all the drones up there maybe it would be safer taking a train.
@@harlanabraham7772 lol, maybe 😂. We do still need passports to travel internationally, but I think they won’t be stamping them or even necessarily looking as they were before. This is the system when you get off many cruise ships recently
@@LifeWellCruised None of the foreign countries I've been to ever stamped my passport. Been on 31 cruises.
4:00 The ETA to enter the United Kingdom will cost a passenger ten pounds (not Euros) this approximates to US $12.56.
Real ID here has been postponed at least...well, I REALLY don't know HOW many times! So we'll see. I've actually had one since at least my old DL from Texas however many years ago and more recently, got my N Carolina one 3 1/2 years ago. I don't know about other states [I'm 98% sure that it HAS to be the same (?)] but it doesn't cost anything extra to do it. It puts little gold stars on the ID.
I have this to say about air tags - and this probably more on tech challenged 63year old me than the tech, but when we were on our last cruise, the bags showed up as if teleported to our cabin. Now, after we put everything away and the bags went into the closet, we went to eat and when we were at mid-ship, my phone went off to say that my bag wasn't there - ie with me. Now I didn't panic; I just ignored it. But it kept happening.
New Carry-on. As a former airline emp, I have a lot to say. But I better wait for the FB link.
Seriously folks (this is directed at my USA brethren) Just. Get. A. PASSPORT! Yes it's a pain. And it seems to be a BIGGER pain to renew (I'm in the middle of this IDIOTIC process now). But listen to Nike. Just. Do. IT!

If you ever EVER plan (even on a wish list) to travel outside the USA, get a PASSPORT!!
Even when you plan a trip and the darn thing expired, renewal is faster & easier.
@@nascarmadman that’s frustrating re AirTags. I know there are sometimes delayed notifications especially if a phone if on airplane mode
@@LifeWellCruised Well the good news is I already knew were the bag was when I got the notice. I can over look that as long as I can find the thing when it's in airline limbo!
@@arbonneladyTN I just went through the process of renewing. It should be a LOT easier - well sorta. It's been 10 years and things have changed. I did the stupid thing of going to AAA (had to make a special trip since they're an hour away and took dogs to PetSmart for grooming). Paid them $7 (not going to break me) for the 'privilege'. And THEN had problems uploading the pic to the US dot Gov webpage. I finally gave up and stapled the thing to a hard copy and mailed it. BUT, I had jumped through so many hoops by this time that I THOUGHT I had made the payment (if you go by mail, they want a check). So a week later I got the thing back with a note about no payment. So I tried AGAIN to do it online using my own photo. It took 45mins to get one that met their "REQUIREMENTS" - face, arms, torso etc ONLY to have THEM crop the thing to what I was trying to take originally. OH GOOD L O R D ! ! But I got through the process and I should get the new one in the next coupla days! STILL shouldn't be this hard!
Great information thank you !
So glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for update
Merry Christmas
Very informative video! One question, we are going on a Princess British Isles cruise next year. So we will need the ETA for the UK but entering Ireland and France, bookending it, how do we get the ETIAS in time? We will be in the UK a couple days before we leave. Would Princess have something set up on board?
ETA (UK) you can get now. The issue with Etias is that it has been delayed, it is now meant to be up and running 6 months after ESS (the fingerprint and photo entry part for Europe) that was meant to be up in Nov 2024, but has been delayed yet again till 2025 (No idea when in 2025....). So it all depends on when you are travelling.
@ Thanks!
As I read the uk rules it applies to connecting flights too!
I read it the same was you do - "An ETA gives you permission to travel to the UK.", and the UK Gov site says: You can get an ETA instead of a visa if you are: (item 4) - transiting through the UK - including if you are not going through UK border control
@ Thxs I’m not crazy about transfers there anyway and this would add to it, if I’m just in transit.
I love the top you are wearing! Do you have a link?
