Of all the content y'all produce, this series of videos (what went wrong/true story of, etc) have quickly become my favorite. It's everything I loved about Memory Cards (RIP memory cards 😢) distilled into a long form deep dive into one particular incident instead of simply listing multiple unrelated gaming facts. It also really let's the team showcase their journalistic ability. I really hope this continues.
Agreed, although I will say I'm a little disappointed in this one. I get no one wants to get hit with a lawsuit, but in the "true story" all we get is that they were happy with their work? That's some weak tea. I've wanted to hear the story of this game for so long that I was excited as hell to click on this video only for it to be the same as every other one. Once again, I get the issues of trying to track down these stories and they probably already put in so much time they had to cut their losses and just put it out, but it's still disappointing.
the sad thing is even if PSP Oblivion came out, it just wouldn't have matched those PSP GTA and Monster Hunter games in terms of how well the experience was translated. The GTA Stories games were as long and feature complete as the console GTAs, and even had mechanics unique to them. Oblivion just seemed like an increasingly diluted version of the original; cut skills, few notable locations from its tie-in, and overall a lack of consideration towards the "down time" of a Scrolls game.
Funnily enough a lot of people said the same about Redguard but the game was a great spin off. As long as you're not silly enough to expect a clone of the console game then there's still a lot to enjoy. And as it followed a different story it could've filled the gap nicely until Skyrim.
@@DarthPhillius It would certainly be quite open and ambitious if completed, but people look this unfinished prototype and think this is exactly what the full game would be.
@@DarthPhillius i get what you're saying, but like the whole point of the psp was its ability to near replicate console experiences. its one thing to be knowledgeable about the hardware and have tempered expectations, but everything was going against oblivion psp. its temp boxart was literally just the oblivion boxart (could be blamed on storefronts but still). people were going to be expecting a full oblivion experience, and they simply wouldn't have gotten it from this game (although it would've still been acceptably good). my point was that neither GTA Stories or Monster Hunter made compromises, and were both actually ported back over to PS2 without changes--while GTA Stories on PS2 did kinda suffer from being so near GTA 4, the PSP Monster Hunter games were their definitive versions until the 3DS rolled around.
I would have loved a game like this on the Vita. The two sticks would have been perfect for it. And I hope there are more of these to come. Really interesting and great work.
I think the Vita would've actually been able to handle a proper open world experience. Maybe not as huge as the main Oblivion game, but at least 1/6 size of that area to explore, maybe with towns and dungeons being a bit more densely packed to make the most of it. I would've loved to see something like that.
The PSP is a console I will always have great affection for. So very flawed but for me at the time it was the most amazing technology. Great new series.

@@STANI420it was much more powerfull. And unlike ds really had a lot of mature games. Only normies and kids preferd ds because it apeals to casuals in the age before smarphones
The PSP would've been nutty if it had dual analog sticks. That's the ONE flaw I think the system really had. It was ahead of the curve in just about every other category. Still, it practically set the world on fire at the time without dual analog, so it wasn't like the system suffered from it or anything. Just that we might've gotten more FPS games, and ones that controlled way better.

Dude, if a good Monster Hunger could be made on the PSP, it should have been able to handle a good translation of Oblivion. Even it it was trimmed to fit the hardware.
If I remember correctly, the PS3 version of Oblivion did not run very well. The framrate would dip alot and each save would increase the actual file size of the game and would eventually crash and corrupt saves. That PSP version looks really good. Keep in mind we're talking about something that has less power than the PS2, which was weaker than the original Xbox, a system that ran Morrowind, the Elder Scrolls title before Oblivion.
I was so hyped for the idea of a portable spinoff of oblivion when I was a kid, and I even pre ordered it back when I thought preordering games was ever a good idea. The beta looked like it probably wasn’t what most people, myself included, would’ve wanted out of it which feels like a big part of why it was likely canceled. Oblivion’s dungeons were kind of just bad and arguably the weakest part of the game. We've come full-circle with Skyrim being released on the Nintendo Switch. Skyrim on a little thumbnail-sized cartridge, playable on a $200 handheld that slips in your pocket would've blown my mind back in the 360 era.
Sony needs their very own western rpg studio seriously, id assume that studio would be able to rise in popularity as that studio would be used to long form gameplay and building out worlds and lore and world systems...... i could see guerilla doing that as they have sort of done that with horizon which is open world but with light rpg elements

Sword combat in Oblivion is actually really good. If you play it on pc and level up your acrobatics a little bit and make good use of obstacles around you it can become really fun. 🙂 I remember defeating a vastly superior bandit from the Bloated Float quest on a small boat deck while jumping around the ships mast.
These graphics look really good for a PSP game based on a epic WRPG. They are just so vibrant and detailed. In away TES:PSP is a bit more innovative than any modern Bethesda game considering they are using Metroid controls rather than the clunky controls they have before.
What an ambitious game for its hardware, even if it was a mostly linear experience it would have sold well to have Elders Scroll: Oblivion experience on the go.
I really think the formula this game had would’ve been pretty solid all things considered. iirc it was going to focus on individual levels with the hub world allowing you to go to the individual levels, I think Bethesda (or the studio they pawned the development off to) could’ve used that to design tighter levels/ dungeons as well as quests. a mechanic where who you side in a quest with affects the hub world would’ve been really cool, and could give off the feel of an RPG. only having to account for the hub world instead of an open world makes game altering choices easier to account for imo
I still remember growing up my friends brother burnt me a copy of oblivion installed it on our pc, and it ran like shit, a few days later my father bought a new graphics card so I could play oblivion how it was meant to be played on an old amd athlon, I went from five frames to Thirty and never stopped playing it after that
I love playing the early version leak on my vita. Same with the early unfinished saints row for psp. It’s just so fun messing about in an unfinished game.
Not much of an elder scrolls fan myself but I'd love a fallout game in this format. Imagine Fighting a death claw in a post-apocalyptic arena with a sturdy set of t-51 power armor and a reliable automatic rifle, *ON THE GO!*
Honestly, had the game been completed and came out, it would've been an easy bestseller going by the gameplay changes, and teen me would've definitely tried to 100% it as I did with most of my PSP library back then. These days if I were to pick this up as the completed product, I'd dive into 3 dungeons, say the game rocks, but set it aside and not touch it again for years, then pick it up again, start from scratch and repeat the process.
This game was getting pretty similar to what I expected what Shadowgate 64 would be, the first time I played it. Even though I don't like the Shadowgate genre, I must confess that it got me very entertained. But I really would love that Oblivion for the psp would have seen the light of day! Too bad!
I can’t believe what that were able to accomplish with this on the psp, assuming it translated 1 to 1 roughly with what you showed us. This game would have been so awesome
The impact Oblivion had on the minds on the unintocrtinated eyes of anyone stumbling across a 360 showing this masterpiece on a new 1080p TV. I don't care how different it would have been, I'd have eaten it up!
while I know this is more of a joke, in seriousness the reason I imagine is they hadn't thought to port it to much else at the time up until 2016 when they made the special edition. And when they started considering the switch and all else, it was already well past the PS Vita's support span.
Ive played it. It's fun but was never meant to be *oblivion* on the psp. It was a side story. It was a dungeon/ stage crawler. Fun and played very well.
It's not that the game looks better emulated cause it'd be compressed for PSP, it already is compressed. It's that the emulator enhances it. ie: rendering at a higher resolution, better texture filtering, more processing power to handle a better framerate.

Not much of an elder scrolls fan myself but I'd love a fallout game in this format. Imagine Fighting a death claw in a post-apocalyptic arena with a sturdy set of t-51 power armor and a reliable automatic rifle, *ON THE GO!*
Nothing quite as disappointing as a canceled game that looked promising.
How to tell that devs run out of money for 20 minutes
I remember when the leaked super early copy of this and the Saint Row PSP game dropped online. A lot of canceled potential
I would have loved a self contained mini Elder Scrolls on PSP or Vita
I remember this! In hindsight it feels like the forerunner to Skyrim on Switch..
"And if this video didn't make you want to boot up Oblivion, you're a filthy liar."
*Alreadly with the CD in my hand* ...dammit.
This game was getting pretty similar to what I expected what Shadowgate 64 would be, the first time I played it. Even though I don't like the Shadowgate genre, I must confess that it got me very entertained. But I really would love that Oblivion for the psp would have seen the light of day! Too bad!
I traded my DS Lite with 11 games for a PSP in anticipation of this coming out.
I can’t believe what that were able to accomplish with this on the psp, assuming it translated 1 to 1 roughly with what you showed us. This game would have been so awesome
The demo seems to be very different to the magazine pictures but thanks for showing us
The faces all looked less terrifying at least .
The impact Oblivion had on the minds on the unintocrtinated eyes of anyone stumbling across a 360 showing this masterpiece on a new 1080p TV.
I don't care how different it would have been, I'd have eaten it up!
You might have a bit of a colour balance issue there. You've got a real Umpa Loompa vibe going on.
Oblivion would have sold a few psp units. I would have bought one for oblivion.
Considering that Bethesda's tendency to put Skyrim on everything, it's surprising that they never ported Skyrim to the PS Vita.
while I know this is more of a joke, in seriousness
the reason I imagine is they hadn't thought to port it to much else at the time up until 2016 when they made the special edition. And when they started considering the switch and all else, it was already well past the PS Vita's support span.
Wow the audio on this one is really bad. Something happened with encoding this video. @TripleJump you may want to review and reupload this one.
Looks like some of the concepts got used for Elder Scrolls blades. Shame we never got a full release.
This all seems rather similar to The Elder Scrolls: Blades
very creative video idea i love it
Looks so similar to Blades, the phone game. I am assuming that's what came of it. Even some of the models and gameplay.
What sucks is that NPCs in the game probably would’ve looked better than in Starfield
I really enjoyed this video. Gave me some Vidiots vibes for some reason.
i just settle for listening to oblivion's soundtrack when i get the urge to play the game again to be honest
Ive played it. It's fun but was never meant to be *oblivion* on the psp.
It was a side story. It was a dungeon/ stage crawler.
Fun and played very well.
about to load up oblivion on my pc right now. god bless this game.
Never played oblivion, didn't have anything that could play it at the time, the idea it could play on a handheld is optimistic at kindest!
They could easily disclose the reasons anonymously, the game is clearly dead so hardly an NDA is applicable
I want to know about bioshock on the vita.
So the PSP had another hidden jewel, still for my money one of the best portable consoles ever
It should’ve came out on the Vita instead
love this!
I have it installed on my vita. Atleast what was done so far. And it works very well on it and is fun.
I took thousands of pre-orders for this
Id have rather this than the Blades game we got
wait you guys didn’t get this game in your timeline?
It's not that the game looks better emulated cause it'd be compressed for PSP, it already is compressed. It's that the emulator enhances it. ie: rendering at a higher resolution, better texture filtering, more processing power to handle a better framerate.
