      It shows where Zuko was in each of his relationships. If you're going into someone's room you knock first. Its just polite. But if that person is a good friend you barge in on them and jump on their bed like you own the place because you're that comfortable with each other.

I’m 20 now but i still feel dread and ready to be beaten-down even from my friends just for making mistakes. Zuko being afraid of Iroh lashing out at him or being furious with him is completely reasonable, and if i were in Zuko’s shoes i probably wouldn’t have been brave enough to go back to him, even if in reality i was under no danger all along-

      Even after years of undoing bad parenting and conditioning, I still catch myself expecting to receive abusive and painful responses to the mistakes I make. He's only just started undoing all that trauma. He still expects pain as a response to insubordination.

    to paraphrase captain america: "it doesn't matter if the whole country is telling you something wrong is right. If the whole world is telling you to move. It is your duty to plant yourself like a tree and say no. you move." this is aang's struggle in this episode. In his heart he knows that he believes killing is wrong. despite everyone, even his own past lives, telling him different he has to stick to his beliefs no matter the consequences. because theres so many stupid people on the internet that i can actually believe someone would think such an obvious contradictory statement to be true...
      In case not:
      the definition of a killer is a person that kills. regardless of if the person is themselves a killer or not, by definition you are still a killer if you kill them. And since thats the case that therefore proves the initial statement wrong because if it were true that would then mean that killing you would be the "right thing to do". Because you are now a killer and killing killers is "always right" according to you. And then of course that starts an infinite cycle of killing killers. So both of those statements are completely false.

It’s something he fundamentally believes is wrong and that goes against all of his values. It’s not a “duh of course you should kill him” moment, this is Aang’s biggest dilemma. People always seem to have a hard time understanding Aang and him not wanting to kill Ozai, but when you really look at _who_ Aang is it makes complete sense. First of all he’s 12 years old, so deciding to end another person’s life isn’t going to be an easy task in the first place, but you also have to consider his heritage. As an Air Nomad he views all life as sacred and that ending life isn’t an option. Whether it’s the life of a king or a peasant, an insect or a dragon, a gentle soul or a mass-murderer. But it goes even further than that, since Aang is the last of the Air Nomads. Their culture and spirituality HAS to live on with and through him, and he has to carry that responsibility. Which is why taking someone’s life is even more of a problem for him, because if he kills Ozai it would violate one of the most important parts of his culture and spirituality.
    Yes, from all practical angles Aang should just swoop in and absolutely destroy Ozai, it would solve all of the world’s problems. But doing so would invalidate his status as a true Air Nomad, and effectively erase the last of Air Nomad culture in his eyes. For Aang it is paramount that he stays true to his culture and spirituality because that is all he has left of his people, all the world has left of his people. If he casts that aside, then he’ll be ending the Air Nomads forever.
    Yes, Aang is the avatar and it is his duty to restore balance to the world. But he is also the last Air Nomad, and it is his duty to preserve and carry on his culture and teachings.
    The problem is that being the Avatar is now conflicting with being the last Air Nomad, and for 12 year old Aang it must feel like an impossible choice to make.

    • @shelbyteague7928
      @shelbyteague7928 4 роки тому +46

      Like the title of the show “Avatar: the Last Airbender” Aang is both, and he doesn’t hold one above the other. His authority to kill as the Avatar is directly opposed to his values and his duty to uphold those values as the last of his people. That’s why it’s such a difficult decision to make (in addition to the points you’ve made, of course), it’s not just “the right thing” vs what Aang wants, it’s the epitome of the ongoing struggle between the two titles Aang holds.

    • @maruguida8056
      @maruguida8056 4 роки тому +29

      I definetly agree. ALSO, people say "but Yangchen was an Air Nomad too and she thought he should kill Ozai" but firt of all: Aang and Yangchen are two different people, second: she is an adult and he is a kid, and third: Yangchen probably had years of training and asume that her duty was to do anything to protect the world since she found out she was the Avatar, even if it was hard for her at first, after so many years she could've had just asumed she had no other option, but Aang found out like a year ago and barely had training (also, again he is a kid), so it's normal for him to not want to give up his morals, it would be very weird for him to just change his mind or accept killing as an option in such a short span of time. Maybe if he had more years of training for being the Avatar of if he was raised like Yangchen MAYBE he would've accepted that option.

During her times, there was many more air nomads to carry on the tradition and culture. Her killing someone does not kill the entire culture of the air nomads. This is the problem that Aang is facing: him killing Ozai would lead to him feeling that he is not a true air nomad, leading to his end of his culture.

Aang is tasked with committing the ultimate evil to stop evil. And he is reasonably conflicted and confused. At his young age he is facing the reality that the world is not black and white and thus there are many answers and rarely are any perfect. The lion turtle/energy bending stuff came to solve that especific problem just in the right moment and is such an ex machina of a plot device... and I think it would be better to learn that, sometimes, there's no way around certain things. That it is good and ok to be confused and feel conflicted about doing things like that, but it is also important to have the resolve to do what must be done, otherwise you might risk let things the way they are because you want a perfect solution. There rarely is one, and that's ok.

    I read somewhere analyzing why aang doesn’t want to kill the fire lord. A big reason could be that he is literally the last air bender and he probably feels a huge sense of obligation to uphold the values of the air nomads. Because if he doesn’t eventually share or pass down his knowledge for the air nomads then their customs and culture will be lost (not including ancient texts and stuff). Aang may feel a sense of responsibility to uphold the air nomad values in all his actions. So in that sense if he kills the fire lord then people may think he is a hypocrite since his beliefs tell him the exact opposite. But that’s just a theory.

    The lion turtle, honourably referred to as the ancient one by the spirits, is the largest known animal in the world. In the era of Raava, lion turtles populated the spirit wilds, where they served as protectors of mankind by housing human cities on their backs. As indicated by the symbols on their foreheads, each individual lion turtle showed an affinity for one of the four elements and possessed the ability to grant individuals the power to control a certain element.

    It’s interesting how they wrote Aang’s conflict for these episodes. Before the day of black sun, when he originally thought he was facing the firelord, it was all about overcoming his fear of that encounter. And you kind of expect a repeat of that going into the finale.

    Fun bit of trivia, since you wondered about it: Avatar Kuruk's laid back attitude and disengagement from the world angered Koh, so on the day of their wedding Koh crossed to the physical world through the Spirit Oasis in the North Pole (which is where the wedding ceremony was being held) and dragged Kuruk's fiancée down into the water/Spirit World as punishment. Every year after that on the anniversary of what would've been their wedding, Kuruk would enter the Spirit World and hunt for Koh.
    This was all explained in a canon flash-game that used to be on the Nickelodeon site, chronicling Aang's journey through the Spirit World reconnecting with his past lives, while he was in that coma after being killed by Azula at the end of Book 2. The game implies that even in the afterlife, Kuruk's spirit continues to hunt for Koh and his lost fiancée.

    I feel like this captures Aang's dilemma well. Just because killing Ozai is definitely the easiest way for him to end the war, doesn't necessarily mean it's the right one. Especially before looking into alternatives. Even more so, because the particular case of Aang is a twelve year boy who was entrustet with the greatest power and responsibility in the world. He barely hit puberty and is supposed to commit an act which he never even thought he could be capable of in any way possible. Up until this late in the show, his mentality was always on "stop the firelord in less than a year. As a twelve year old who just mastered the own element. A whole lot of work there, that's gonna be first before I can even make a plan to stop him". Killing never occurred to him. He was never in any way told murder could be a solution to anything, so he didn't even think about it, and as it seems at this point everybody who believes in the way he was raised died he wants to hold on to this way even more.

    Omg I so get you on the uncle Iroh part. I so so so wish I had someone like that in my life. That scene always gets to me. He spent years trying to get his father’s forgiveness just for speaking out of turn. He gets forgiven by Iroh in seconds after seeing him & after literally stabbing him in the back, just makes me tear by how surprised zuko is by this 🥺 I love this series man, I can’t believe it’s ending & I can’t wait for the next episodes!! 😁

    Technically Aaang's past lives don't actually tell him to kill Ozai. They tell him "You must be decisive," "Only justice will bring peace," "You must actively shape your own destiny," and "Sacrifice your own spiritual needs, and do whatever it takes to save the world." This certainly sounds like they are implying he will need to kill the Firelord, but they aren't outright saying he needs to.

    There was a few references to the lion turtles in the show.
    -In The Library Aang finds a drawing of one in an old book.
    -In Ba Sing Se, Sokka and (possibly) Aang stand near a sculpture of one at the Royal Palace.
    -In Sokka's Master, Piandao's door knockers are Lion Turtle heads.
    -Piandao tells sokka he has a heart "as big as a Lion Turtle",
    -Lion Turtle statues are in Piandao's Rock Garden.

    A lot of reactors I watch are thrown for a loop when the lion turtle shows up. But it's actually been mentioned a few times in the series. In the library episode Aang was looking at a picture of a lion turtle, and Piandao had lion turtle statues in his garden. It was even mentioned again in the latter episode when Sokka received his sword. So it didn't come completely out of nowhere.

    This always the most interesting part any Avatar reaction. Seeing the reactor turn on Aang. Aang doesn't want to spare Ozai because he think he's worth giving a chance but because Aang is the last airbender. He is solely responsible for uphold the air nomad tradition. That includes pacifism. The Fire nation destroy every trace of Air nomad culture and Aang doesn't want them to take non-violence from him. Aang is conflicted between good and right. Sparing the fire lord is Good, but killing him is right.

      Menkir Dennis Lol being the “last of his kind” is irrelevant. The point is you do what you gotta do when the time comes. You think Gyatso and the other Air Nomads didn’t believe all life is sacred (even the tiniest firefly caught in its own web?). Where do you think Aang learned all that? And yet Gyatso was willing to kill any and everyone who ran up in his temple to harm the ones he loved. How many dead firebenders stood at his feet? How many fire benders did Gyatso kill without question? You can blame it on Aang being the last of his kind but he was just being a little bitch. P.S. I’m not mad at the lion turtle, but if you’re so biased you can’t see the turtle for what he is (a convenient dues ex) you’re blind dude.

    Avatar Yangchen was the avatar before Kuruk. Yangchen was a great avatar when it came the human side of things, even being worshipped as a god by the people. She would often be in conflict with spirits to a kind of racist degree. In Kuruks life, he from the human side of things was laid back n go with the flow, that was the lie he went with. He was actually cleaning up the BS that Yangchen put him in. Thats also y he died young. Fighting dark spirits has an effect on people, especially an avatar that’s suppose to be the bridge. Kuruk was a great avatar, a sad avatar. The people of the Avatar world wouldn’t know that though. They will only see him as the worst and the one who lost his life early in life because he had too much fun and not doing his duty.
