I think Iroh's story is so powerful, and that's why it hits us so hard every time. His son died in a war that Iroh was flourishing in. In suffering, he realized that every single thing he thought was important to his name or his legacy didn't mean anything if so many people suffered for it.
Iroh gets justifiably called a war criminal often lol and he deserves it. If we could see his horrific past actions, we may not find him so endearing. But there's something VITAL in watching someone like Iroh scratch and claw his way out of the evil that he were born into, and then turn around and pull others out with him. He never makes excuses, his remorse and shame never lessen, he never asks anyone not to bring up his past crimes. He just steps up and IS a better man than he was, he became the example of the unconditional love and guidance that he never got.
That's why Iroh is a beloved character and an amazing role model. If I ever have a son, I want them to look up to them

It's even sadder when you realize that just a few minutes earlier he sang it to a little boy in such an upbeat way. The song is obviously heartbreaking for him but he had to push down his own feelings just so that little kid could be happy. He had to do something immensely painful without showing that pain.
that scene with the kid becomes so hard to watch when you realize what Iroh is probably going through, how he may have sung it to his own son as he was growing up
@@uzunami810 the short actualy shows him helping a couple people. a child, teenagers, and adults alike. kinda like a parent would with their child
This scene explains so much of the character of Iroh. He feels responsible for sending his son to battle. He couldn't protect him because he was too engulfed in the conflict. He lost his son because he wasn't there. That's why he is indifferent to the fire nation's goals, and more importantly, why he will never give up on Zuko. Of all the forgiveness he offers to those around him, he cannot forgive himself, and he is a better man for it. Zuko and Iroh are 2 of the best written animated characters of all time, and definitely number 1 and 2 in a kids show.
It also hits hard that you realize Iroh’s son would have been the Firelord after the title was passed to Iroh and Iroh passed it on to him. Not only the son, but the future and rightful leader of the Fire Nation
Iroh was so weak and stupid. He let his emotions cloud hos judgement, instead of just killing Zuko, Azula, and Ozai, who were evil, or at risk of becoming evil. The white lotus also didn't fight in the war until after 100 years. And Iroh put his health at risk by being overweight, and thereby not being able to protect to world for as long as he could have.

There is many reasons why this episode is so iconic to the series. Mako who was the voice actor was dying of cancer. This was the last scene he made for the series. He died shortly after and never saw the episode air. The picture they show of iroh's son is a animated replica of mako's military picture from when he was enlisted. They added it it as a tribute after he had died and honored the voice actor. dedicated to him at the end and an iconic scene he last shot. The new actor that took over for iroh refuses to sing the song to this day because "it's mako's song". This was everyones goodbye to mako.
Wait, that picture of Iroh's son was actually of the voice actor? The layers of sadness this episode keeps peeling back just keep coming, I swear.

Iroh would still be in line as the fire lord therefor azulan wouldn't have told Ozai to sacrifice his own and therefore Ursa wouldn't have helped Ozai poison Azulan . So iroh may not have been fire lord just yet because Azulan would still be alive so Aang would have to defeat Azulan who is at old age and possibly Iroh. But I think Iroh had connections with the Spirits before his son died so I think Iroh wouldn't have been cold and heartless and probably would have slowly realized or help Aang restore balance.

Some men are told not to be emotional because it’s a sign of weakness, so just because you think it’s old, which it definitely isn’t, does not mean it does not apply now. Secondly, so many people are told and shown over and over again that they’re feelings aren’t cared for or are insignificant. Even men on social media that show emotion are ridiculed. It's even more heart-wrenching that the entirety of Iroh's day is filled with him being interacting to children, singing songs and even teaching some kids how to admit mistakes and apologize (unless the person is actually about to beat you up good), he even stood as someone who is understanding and supportive to a random thief. Iroh is my all-time favorite avatar character. So humble, wise, funny, powerful. I love all of his talks with the other characters, always says exactly what needs to be said
To the show creators congratulations you made me cry while watching a show no one else has that achievement
The thing that always gets me in this scene is that when Mako is crying while singing he’s actually crying not acting. He cried because he realized the cancer would overtake him soon and he was scared. That’s why it breaks my heart every time I listen to this.
this song becomes a lot more sad for me when I realize that Uncle Iroh cares so much about Zuko because Iroh sees Zuko as his son whom he lost.
this show has so many lairs. he also tried to guide Zuko so he would not make the same mistakes he did.
Then you realize that
Picture of his son
Is actually a representation of what Younger Mako the voice actor to uncle iroh
Really looked like and knowing he cried while singing this
This show is so deep and beautiful. From the story, to the characters, to the animation, and lastly to the lessons it taught, the show is perfect.
Zuko was like his son too, there's a scene/flashback when Zuko remember his childhood (maybe the beach episode) and he was in Iroh's arms and Lu Ten playing in the sand.
Every time I watch this clip, I think I can hold it together. I tried to each and every time it replayed for the reactors. But by the end of the video, I'm actually sobbing. Rest in peace, Mako. Thank you for bringing so much joy and knowledge into my life in the form of Iroh.
How does everyone in these reactions cry so composedly or gracefully? When I cry it’s full tears and ugly sobs
This scene is a master at making us all tearbend
Thank you great leader
you cried too jong?
Second only to my empty stomach
hell you're right kim jong-un
Waaaaaaaaa😭😭
Kid: Cool! How did you get like that?!
Man: Every time I cry during "Leaves From The Vine"
I do one pushup
Kid: *Jesus Christ*
Underrated
Lmao this is the almost similar explanation as to why Chidi got so jacked in The Good Place 😂
Half a push up
Unrealistic
They didn't start crying after hearing "Leaves from the vine"
I know it is not normal for one to break into emotion because of a single line but someone said the magic words
This episode is actually how i found out about Mako's passing. As tearjerking as this segment was, that little "In Memory of Mako" was an absolute gut punch.
Too many people that think its not okay to feel. Not okay to cry. The strongest person ive ever met told me "my tears do not compromise my strength" she taught me that as a young man. she also died of cancer. I will always honor her in these moments and cry unashamed. I was blessed with a great teacher.
"I said FEELS of BaSingSe, not FUNS of BaSingSe!"
😂😂😂
She really trying to drown the sorrow tho 😂
@@ven_skywalker7007 I would do the same as well xD

nickfarts alot nope
@nickfarts alot i didn't cry when i watched the first time so i kept rewatching it only a full version could make me cry
Uncle Iroh, the very representation of the essence of humanity and experiencing both sides of life. Yin and Yang.
Yeah short thing here: cried 6 times.
We all need an Uncle Iroh in our lives.
Be happy if you have one, and respect him.
When Iroh says
"If only I could've helped you"
Mako (Iroh's original voice actor) means he wanted to help his past self to stop smoking because he knew he was dying from cancer.
Iroh's son in the story is actually a young Mako who made reckless and bad decisions.
…No.
Mako actually recorded this a few weeks before he died. His voice is cracking because he was sick and had come to terms with his own death and knew he was going to die soon. So much depth to this scene
Stop it I’m tear bending
this made me really sad
That's so so sad.
But all jokes aside rip mako
**tearbending** stahpp
how tf DO I CRY EVERYTIME I LITERALLY LOOKED THIS UP WILLINGLY KNOWING WHAT WAS GONNA HAPPEN
For real
It is the Curse of the Tears.
ik i literally cried each time the video played. some movies/shows just make me really emotional. it honestly feels horrible but I d it anyway.
I fuckin feel you man this scene fucks me up every God damn time
*S a m e*
People can say this shouldn’t make you cry but this is much deeper then a simple cartoon show. This scene is dedicated to the voice of Uncle Iroh and seeing that scene was his last recorded voice is so emotional. It hits deeper for me because my grandmother and I used to watch Avatar when I was just a helpless young child and I always think about her. I hope they both are at peace with the lord❤
That song is so beautiful, and the vocal is just out of this world.
Leaves from the vine
Falling so slow
Like fragile tiny shells
Drifting in the foam
Little soldier boy
Come marching home
Brave soldier boy
Comes marching home
Those leaves did grow
From branches overgrown
Drifting slowly down
Resting on the loam
Little soldier boy
Taken from home
Forced to fight a war
That's not his own
Ash in the snow
Falling so slow
Like fragile, broken hearts
With no place to go.
Little soldier boy
Come marching home
Brave soldier boy
Come marching home
He thought he knew
What he was fighting for,
But the sight of blood
Made him question war.
Poor soldier boy
Cold and alone,
Bombs fall like rain,
He's all alone.
Leaves from the vine
Falling so slow
Like fragile tiny shells
Drifting in the foam
Little soldier boy says
"Carry me home"
Sleeping soldier boy
Is carried home
Bysthedragon thank you..
Thank you sir
Thank you
Thank you
😢😢
What gets me the most about this short is him singing the song to the upset child first. Using something that was so painful, and is painful for him to soothe the pain of someone else.
I didn't ask for your fricking onions you bastard my eyes hurt already 😭
Sometimes the best way to solve your own problems, is to help someone else.
I remember crying seeing this scene for the first time (still makes me tear up), AND THEN THE NEXT EPISODE IS freakin "Appa's Lost days"!!!!! Niagara Falls!!!!! Talk about the most heartbreaking stretch of episodes!!!!
The picture that Iroh sets out was the last message he received from his son. It says something along the lines of "To General Iroh; We shall see each other again once the war is won. Your loyal son, Lu Ten".
I never put it together until now, but Iroh is honoring his sons birthday in the city where Lu Ten died. I can see why it might be even more emotional.
Wow, I've watched the series so many times and that never consciously registered in my mind :o makes this even more sad :'(
To make it sadder is what i found out from the other comments
Mako was uncle irohs voice actor and he was dying of cancer at the time, three days after he sang this he passed away
And that picture was a painting of him when he was younger
@@Cbop77 And the other Fire Nation High-ranks mock him for his failure at Ba Sing Se.
