WHY THE TALE OF IROH IS SAD: Each scene of Iroh was a scene of a father helping. He helps and acts like a father who comforts a toddler. He helps the kids, like a father, own up to their mistakes and learn to choose fights. He helps a man, like a father, find his way back to goodness. But in the end he says to his own son, for which he believes he has failed as a father "If only I could have helped you." And that hurts. Because Mako is the voice actor for Iroh. That scene was the last one he taped before he died. As a tribute they drew Lu Ten's face based on a young Mako.
iroh: loves his son so much that he celebrates his birthday every year, and took a troubled zuko under his wing treating him as if he were his own son. Ozai: a master fire bender who challenged his 13 year old son to fight him because he spoke out of turn, permanently disfiguring his face when he refused to fight, and then banishing him only allowing him to return if he finds the avatar which has been presumed dead for 100 years.
@@scarletleader5420 I only heard about it from other people, but from what I know, during his service as a general, Iroh believed just as everyone else in the fire nation that they were superior, and though I guess maybe he wasn't as terrible as his brother and father, his opinions were apparently not so different. After losing his son in ba sing se, Iroh ended his seige and traveled the world, in those travels he found the order of the white lotus, and even somehow went to the spirit world, which is why when Aang was in the spirit world and riding Roku's dragon, Iroh was the only one capable of seeing him. It was after all of his traveling that he found inner peace and I suppose it was then that zuko's father scarred and banished him, and Iroh decided to take him under his wing.
@@carmelhashmueli7751 correct. Iroh was a proud Fire Nation General and heir to the throne. I think more importantly, the Iroh short showed why he takes so much responsibility in taking care of Zuko, since Zuko was rejected by his own father and Iroh lost his own son around the same time Zuko lost his mother, the only parent that loved him
Also, because at the time Lu Ten died, Iroh believed in the Fire Nation's war. He taught his son the same, and learned too late. With Zuko, he hoped to guide Zuko down a better path and a different, higher understanding of honor.
Someone pointed out that Uncle Iroh helped someone in each stage of their life from childhood to teenage to someone in their early 20's. Which is when his son died in combat.

@@capa1575 I remember hearing a quote about that just kills me. "In peace, sons bury their fathers. In war, fathers bury their sons." It's such a simple quote but it drives home the raw, crushing sadness of having the light of your life, your own flesh and blood, just taken from you.
It's even sadder when you realize that there's a picture of zuko as a baby with who you'd think was his father but it was actually Iroh and his son with baby zuko.
Mako was the man who voiced Uncle Iroh. He had a terminal esophageal cancer and sadly passed away, and was replaced by Greg Baldwin for season 3. The reason his voice is so raw with emotion in this short is not only because he was channeling Iroh’s pain. He knew he was dying. He was crying while singing this song, it was one of the last things he managed to record before he passed, and they used it to pay tribute to him. Also I remember reading somewhere that the picture of Lu Ten, his son, was modeled after Mako in his younger years. RIP Mako Iwamatsu ❤️ you spread so much joy in the world by voicing Uncle Iroh for us (and Aku from Samurai Jack!!)
Also Mako was Iroh's original voice actor. He passed away from esophageal cancer before the production of the show was over but he performed the song "Leaves from the Vine". The VA who took over the part won't even sing it at cons in honor of him saying it was Mako's song and if you watch Korra after this they named one of the main characters after him.
Leaves from the Vine gets me every time. Mako is Uncle Iroh's actor who also plays Aku from Samurai Jack Season 1-4. Season 5 he could not play Aku one more time because of his passing. Symbolism is key.
Mako knew he was dying of cancer when he sang “Leaves from the Vine”. That’s why he’s choking up when he sings it. He knew he was dying and that was one of the last things he was gonna record.
As much as I miss Mako, comments like this are infuriating. We don't know why he choked up and to assume such reasons is in a way disrespectful Edit: I just read comments confirming what you wrote, I apologise, I was wrong
@@user-qi6tp1te1y Did I say he didn't pass away? No. I said at the time he recorded his lines his character was suppose to be crying over his dead son, so he made his voice crack. He's a voice actor. It's called acting. I know he passed away. Obviously it says that. I'm just saying his voice cracked because he's acting, not because he knew it might be the last of his lines.
I think Iroh's short is a masterpiece in more ways than most people know. The fact that he shows such kindness in Ba Sing Se, the city where his son was killed, on the day of his son's birthday, is so Iroh. He shows no disdain for the people of Ba Sing Se, even though this city was responsible for his son's death.
Mako was irohs voice actor who died of cancer shortly after that episode was released. He was legit crying because he knew that would be his last recording so he was essentially saying goodbye to us
Aside from the voice of Iroh, Mako also was the voice of Splinter in the 2007 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie His acting, and later voice acting, career started in 1959 and he was in many movies and shows. One of the roles many knew him from was Akiro/The Wizard in Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer. He died in 2006 while this show was still being made. As for Iroh's tale, I don't know anyone who didn't cry. Something many overlook with Sokka's tale? He is holding his own in poetry against a poetry teacher until he overdoes it. Against a teacher.
As someone who used to be incapable of tears on a deep level, it's oddly the opposite of cruel to wish tears on someone in this context. It takes a solid, healthy state of mind. Heartstrings.
Crying is a very healthy form of catharsis, and it's very brave thing for a person (especially for straight men in America) to show such raw emotion publicly.
Iroh was already my favorite character but this episode cemented him as my favorite forever Mako was Iroh's voice actor who sadly died before this episode aired
9:06 The funny thing is I think that’s the last time we see him in Avatar... he really does not care anymore!! Awesome reactions by the way!! The tale of iroh is really impactful
Leaves from the vine, falling so slow, like fragile tiny shells drifting in the foam. Little soldier boy come marching home, braaaave solder boy - comes - mar-ching -hooome. RIP Mako
So.. I happened to come across this video, loved it and ended up watching all the previous ones too. Essentially making it the fifth time I watched Avatar. But you know... this time it felt better, I found myself genuinely laughing and being emotional because it felt like I was watching the show with a friend. I've been feeling unsure of people around me, lately, and I don't have many friends either. I guess I'm trying to say thanks because this kind of made my day. Wish we could be friends in real life...
Fyi Iroh wasn't always this kind and wise old man. He used to be "cruel" in a sense and talked about burning ba sing se down to the ground like it was nothing. It was BECAUSE of his son's death that made him rethink his life and decide to help people. Who knows what kind of a person Iroh could turn out to be if his son never died.
ShinyShilla if the reactor is not on Book 3 don't talk about Book 3 at all. In any capacity. I don't know why that's hard to understand. People are out here foaming at the mouths to tease their knowledge of later episodes and it's ridiculous. At most people can just say "Book 3 is gonna be awesome" or "Can't wait to see what you think of Book 3." There is no point in saying anything beyond that other than to flex that you watched the show.
Mako was the voice actor of Iroh. He died of throat cancer during the season. Leaves From the Vine was actually the last thing he ever recorded. The short was then dedicated to him, and even after that, the sequel series, Legend of Korra, had a character named Mako, in his honour.
if you didn't catch it already Mako is the person who voiced Iroh. He sadly passed away qwhile he was still voicing this episode so the reast of Iroh's lines are voiced by someone else.
In Greg Baldwin’s tweet, he would always decline requests to sing Leaves from the Vine out of respect for Mako Iwamatsu. ”It’s Mako’s song...not mine.”
and it's really sad that Mako was actually singing to himself, he plays a character that loves to help everyone and he just wasn't able to help himself.
Mako was the voice of Iroh. He had throat cancer and this was his last episode he got to voice before he died, so he wrote “Leaves From The Vine” for himself. The picture of Irohs son is supposed to be an adaptation of Mako as a young man. Shit hurts 10x more when you know all this and watch it again 😭
Iroh’s story always gets it. One analysis I watched talked about how Iroh is acting like a father figure for each stage of child’s life: boy, teen, and adult. Makes me wonder if I could do the same if I was a parent. The build-up before the sunset scene really pays off. ❤️
I love the Iroh tale as much as the next guy but no one ever talks about the tragedy of Zuko’s tale. The fact that a 16 y/o kid can’t express feelings for someone because of his broken family is really sad. The glimmer of hope when he said “it was nice” at the end is heartbreaking because he knows he wishes his life was normal.
Harrison Toth I first watched this series during my preteen-teenage years and literally after watching this show I came across the following on UA-cam...ua-cam.com/video/h8gffeoF9S0/v-deo.html
Really late, but Mako was Iroh's original voice actor, who passed away due to throat cancer I believe. This was one of the last, if not the last clip he ever did for Avatar, and as Iroh.
Female viewer 🙋♀️ I recently came across your Avatar reactions. It’s fun to re-experience the series with someone who has never seen it before ☺️ also, I’m sure someone probably mentioned it in the comments already, but Mako was the voice actor of Iroh. There is a character in Legend of Korrah named after him 🥰
ok but the way the final picnic colors every interaction iroh had up til that point, and his entire character tbh. the way the death of his son shaped his whole outlook on life. he was all in on the fire nation and it’s war. he spent YEARS besieging a single city. and then lu ten was gone. only THEN did he abandon the siege. and ever since, he’s not only been trying to make up for his war crimes, but also help everyone he encounters now that he can’t help lu ten. to say the tale of iroh is a big OOF is an understatement and a half.
Took me a few seconds to get that due to the actual audio issue in a previous video and his intentional steps to avoid copyright claims. I was like, “Hm 🤔 I didn’t notice that.” and started moving on. Then, “...Wwaaait, I see what they did...” Xd
Something I've finally noticed with Iroh's Tale is the fact that he helps boys at their different stages of life. The little toddler who just wants love and to laugh, young boys who make a mistake, and a young man who's gone down the wrong road. So, his words ring so much deeper upon rewatch with that context in mind. "If only I could've helped you."
Legit everyone so reacts to Iroh singing *Leaves from the Vine* “I’m not normally a emotional person” Me: “Honestly... It doesn’t matter if you are or not! Everyone cries or at least is emotional watching that scene... If you don’t feel anything watching it you have no Soul!”
Something a recent reviewer mentioned that I didn't pick up on the first time. In each of Iroh's shorts, the boys get older. A baby, a kid, a young man. It's a microcosm of how he raised his son, and then got him killed. It makes me tear every goddamn time, and I'm not much of a crier either.
Zuko's short, too. It's about the life he could have, should have had. A normal life, and how he could settle down and be happy in Ba Sing Se, if he'd let himself, and he uses his firebending to do something nice for someone. Tragic, in it's own way.
This episode is a MASTERPIECE. Did cry.
Hope you all enjoy this episode! Appa's Lost Days will be coming out soon as its own video :)

The sad thing is that mako actually cried while singing leaves from the vine because he knew he was dying 😔😔😔🥺😭😭😭
I should mention, Mako was the original voice actor for Iroh. That song “Leaves from the vine” was actually one of his last bits of playing part

I can finally unironically say top 10 saddest anime moments
AHAHAHAAHHA
The fact that Mako and Dante also had the same dynamic as Iroh and Zuko makes it even sadder.
We don't know why he choked up and to assume such reasons is in a way disrespectful
Edit: I just read comments confirming what you wrote, I apologise, I was wrong
He probably choked up because the character is suppose to be crying
@@TheBlackLakeSiren I don't think so
@@TheBlackLakeSiren and they literally said tribute to mako
@@user-qi6tp1te1y Did I say he didn't pass away? No. I said at the time he recorded his lines his character was suppose to be crying over his dead son, so he made his voice crack. He's a voice actor. It's called acting.
I know he passed away. Obviously it says that. I'm just saying his voice cracked because he's acting, not because he knew it might be the last of his lines.
Iroh:sings leaves from the vine
Me: that’s ok, I didn’t need my heart anyway
I think Iroh's short is a masterpiece in more ways than most people know. The fact that he shows such kindness in Ba Sing Se, the city where his son was killed, on the day of his son's birthday, is so Iroh. He shows no disdain for the people of Ba Sing Se, even though this city was responsible for his son's death.
me, one of the new female watchers: 👀👀👀👀 "KYAH he talking to me".
Ayyyy same, girl!
😳
Mako was irohs voice actor who died of cancer shortly after that episode was released. He was legit crying because he knew that would be his last recording so he was essentially saying goodbye to us
"I'ma ask all you men to step aside, this is a message for you ladies."
Dude, I'm 30, calm down. Lol
Me over here chanting “Tears! Tears! Tears!” The whole time... is that cruel?
Yes
As someone who used to be incapable of tears on a deep level, it's oddly the opposite of cruel to wish tears on someone in this context. It takes a solid, healthy state of mind. Heartstrings.
Crying is a very healthy form of catharsis, and it's very brave thing for a person (especially for straight men in America) to show such raw emotion publicly.
i didnt cry at this scene cuz i havent cried at anything in four years 😭 send help
Mako was the original voice actor of general iroh. this was his last episode before he unfortunately died.
Iroh was already my favorite character but this episode cemented him as my favorite forever
Mako was Iroh's voice actor who sadly died before this episode aired

The funny thing is I think that’s the last time we see him in Avatar... he really does not care anymore!! Awesome reactions by the way!! The tale of iroh is really impactful
They make a reference to him in the ember island players as a source of info for the play.
MathShinobi oh right!!! I forgot about that you are correct
@@chrisbergsten1429 If you're trying not to spoil you could just NOT TALK ABOUT IT AT ALL good lord
@@CloudCollapse that's not that big of a spoiler since we still don't know a thing about fire element (at least at this point)
Iroh is usually such a happy and uplifting person. That's why it's so sad seeing him in pain.
FYI the "In honor of Mako" is referring to Iroh's Voice Actor, who passed away before the end of the show.
Shredder: And according to the comment section, she's not the only one with a crush on Zuko
Me: **sweats nervously** I've been exposed
In Greg Baldwin’s tweet, he would always decline requests to sing Leaves from the Vine out of respect for Mako Iwamatsu. ”It’s Mako’s song...not mine.”
and it's really sad that Mako was actually singing to himself, he plays a character that loves to help everyone and he just wasn't able to help himself.
Ur words cut deeper then any blade -zabuza 😭
Watched the series 6 times since lock down, cried every time to leaves from the vine😢
I saw it maybe.. 18 times between this rewatch? 20 times? (I mean.. since 2005 :D ) And I'm still crying..
Me2 mann, watched 5times last few months and still tear up... Appa episode 2 tho
Pump those numbers up
Those are rookie tears
😭😭😭😭😭
Mako was the voice of Iroh. He had throat cancer and this was his last episode he got to voice before he died, so he wrote “Leaves From The Vine” for himself. The picture of Irohs son is supposed to be an adaptation of Mako as a young man. Shit hurts 10x more when you know all this and watch it again 😭
Mako is Iroh’s voice actor. Leaves from the Vine was the last thing he recorded before he passed.
Mako was the voice actor for Iroh, Tales of Ba Sing Se was the last episode that he recorded before he passed away of esophageal cancer
mako was the voice actor of iroh and this was his last scene before he passed away and the song he sung was about going back to a more peaceful time
Iroh is basically the Mr. Rogers of the Avatar world.
That is seriously high praise. And I absolutely agree
Leaves From The Vine was also the The last thing Mako Iwamatsu filmed as the voice of Uncle Iroh. As he died of throat cancer 😢😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
This is where grown men cried. Can't believe this was in a kids show. AMAZING. this is one of the many reasons i love this show.
R.I.P Mako (he was the original voice actor of Iroh throughout season 1-2)
Iroh’s story always gets it. One analysis I watched talked about how Iroh is acting like a father figure for each stage of child’s life: boy, teen, and adult. Makes me wonder if I could do the same if I was a parent. The build-up before the sunset scene really pays off. ❤️
"Y'all saw nothing " i was crying to but this made me laugh 😂
Mako was the voice actor who played uncle Iroh. He died before this episode aired.
Leaves from the Vines, falling so slow, like fragile, tiny shells, drifting in the pond
17 minutes and 37 seconds of holding back tears
There is a character in Legend of Korrah named after him 🥰
Sorry but what did being a female have to do with it
ok but the way the final picnic colors every interaction iroh had up til that point, and his entire character tbh. the way the death of his son shaped his whole outlook on life. he was all in on the fire nation and it’s war. he spent YEARS besieging a single city. and then lu ten was gone. only THEN did he abandon the siege. and ever since, he’s not only been trying to make up for his war crimes, but also help everyone he encounters now that he can’t help lu ten.
to say the tale of iroh is a big OOF is an understatement and a half.
i think you had some issue with rendering the video.
it got really blurry during iroh's story.
think that happend to everyone :(
Took me a few seconds to get that due to the actual audio issue in a previous video and his intentional steps to avoid copyright claims.
Legit everyone so reacts to Iroh singing *Leaves from the Vine* “I’m not normally a emotional person”
Me: “Honestly...
Yes I’ve joined. I love avatar, and you’re very attractive. It’s a win-win situation
Literally nobody asked man-
Mako Iwamatsu was Iroh's original voiceactor, who died during the production of Book Two.
14:04 “zuko has always been the bad guy of the series” azula: hold my lightning
Mako is Iroh's voice actor, unfortuanettly he passed away, that's why they said "in his honor"💔😢❤️
