    This is actually quite practical bit of science. You should do more episodes about anatomy, sports etc. That's probably a mine of views.

      yeah, but HIGH intensity and LONG duration dont go together that well, thats why you mostly better off going for a longer duration, when you want to burn more calories.
      reading your comment, Im still not sure what you mean with "same" duration, so I might be totally missing your point ^^
      If I want to aim for maximum calories, I take out a map, pick a destination 40-70 km away, get on my bike and do a good old sunday there-and-back-again ^^

      +Omeir Khan Fitness advisers don't want you to know how simple and shallow their field is. Magazines, supplement suppliers and fitness models all want you to think there are endless things to try and talk about when it's comically basic because they want to continue to have a business or career as long as possible.

      basically the answer is yes soreness = muscle "damage" therefore repair/growth...BUT don't be a dumbass and send yourself to snap city thinking you're making all kindz of gainz!! But it's all just advice....do whatever THE FUCK you wanna do :)

    • @CJSwitz
      @CJSwitz 8 років тому +6

      +alekmoth We did actually. Muscle soreness doesn't necessarily mean muscle growth. The two are independent, and there is no statistical, let alone causal relationship.

    • @CoCody_
      @CoCody_ 8 років тому +1

      +Juan Pablo Mina Muscle soreness doesn't mean muscle growth, but it can be a indication of the muscle growth from the micro tears in the muscle. You also need a surplus of calories and protein for the body to utilize it for repairing damaged muscle. Growth=time under tension, ex: curling 50 pounds slowly.

      I think its similar to the effects of studying something for an extended period, a small amount of pain meaning a small amount study, after too much study, or too much pain, the point of diminishing returns kicks in, and with even more pain or study, it can start to have a negative effect. I think ideally you want to have a small amount of soreness, too much tearing can do damage, but none means you didn't really do anything.

      Bro, working out or not has nothing to do with being knowledgeable about physiology. The point of science is finding out if something is actually true, despite of how it may feel to you personally and despite what big guys on roids tell you.
      There are countless people who walk into the gym, lift very light weights for huge amounts of reps and they end their workout feeling the "burn", yet their gains are close to zero. So, unless we have scientific studies backing up that burn=gainz we have no reason to claim so.

    "No pain, no gain." "False, pain merely correlates with gain; it does not cause it."

    • @jasong5913
      @jasong5913 8 років тому +2

      +LimeGreenTeknii No where in the statement "no pain, no gain" does it imply causality. The statement "no light, no vision" is just as valid - you can't see if there is no light. But it's not light that allows you to see, it's your eyes. So "no pain, no gain" is not necessarily false.

    • @goverat
      @goverat 8 років тому +1

      +Dexi Antoniu not quite the 'good form pain equals good gains'. there is this thing called rahybdo-something (google will correct that if you search it), basically you overwork your muscles so much, they begin to die and release toxins into your blood which can kill. it used to be rare as hens teeth but it's far more prevalent since crossfit

    • @LimeGreenTeknii
      @LimeGreenTeknii 8 років тому +3

      True. How about, "No pain, no gain." "False. There can be gain without pain, and there can be pain without gain."

    • @brocaraton

      Then "no pain, no gain" still holds, just not causally. So the whole video is a waste of time.

    • @LimeGreenTeknii
      @LimeGreenTeknii 8 років тому +1

      +bocanutz The important thing is that more pain doesn't mean more gain necessarily, and if you've been repeating the same exercise and stopped feeling pain, that doesn't mean you aren't making any more gains. It's not a 1:1 correlation.

    This is an interesting topic. While getting sorer doesn't necessary mean you're growing more muscles, it is important to note that avoiding adaptation, or more precisely - homeostasis, is key to building your physique. Most trained bodybuilders would advice an occasional change of your workout plan (ratio of reps and sets, sequence of the exercises, changing the exercises) in order to stress and shock your muscles. I remember Arnold has talked a lot about this and how important it is to not repeat the same exercises with the same sets and reps every time. This is not to be confused with progressive overload.

I just started back at the gym last week and when I did biceps & upper back my biceps didn't just feel sore like my triceps the day before, but I felt overwhelming pain. this explains a lot and by now my arms feel better and I couldn't explain it to my friends why going so hard hurt so dang bad the first day but isn't bad at all now

    Your the best. I use to work at a gym, and one time I felt extra sore after a particluar workout with a profesional trainer. I did not know what caused the "extra sorness," but it sure was a weird feeling LOL. Thank you for uploading this video. It does wonders for my future nursing-career.

      +Deadly Shadow Im pretty sure if Hank wanted to be buff then he could totally get bigger. there been many times where a so called "skinny guy" has "skinny genetics" or is "naturally skinny" then gets buff and all of a sudden his genetics change? or now he's naturally buff? so more likely Hank just doesn't care about lifting. which is completely ok :)

    I believe in sneaking up on fitness -- doing what doesn't hurt and then slowly increasing weight or reps. It seems to work for me but it would be nice to know if this is actually a good way to increase fitness over a long period of time.
    I associate pain with doing something I haven't done for a very long time, like riding a horse.

    when feeling sore does it matter if u shower with hot or cold water?

    • @jrobmus
      @jrobmus 8 років тому

      Well cold water causes your muscles to contract and restricts blood flow, which isn't super great but it also reduces swelling and can have a numbing effect. So warm showers are better, but if you've injured yourself or are extremely sore, then a lot of people recommend applying cold. In baseball we ice our arms and I have soccer friends who've taken ice baths.

      Artemis Ares No, I'm saying that for a science-based channel this video is very heavily based on speculation and hypothetical guesswork.
      I'm also saying that he doesn't look like he works out. If you were in a situation where you were required to land a plane without any prior experience, would you listen to radio advice from a retired Air-Force pilot or the random guy who said he had watched the movie Top Gun 17 times?

    • @failedfishermanBC
      @failedfishermanBC 8 років тому +2

      +Crosby4hyg
      He isn't a particle physicist either, yet he explains particle physics in many of his videos.
      Neither is he a doctor, yet he has many videos explaining medical science. And similarly, he doesn't seem to workout, yet he explains muscle growth from a scientific perspective *using what we so far know*.
      Are you saying that a bodybuilder would be able to give you a better answer because he *wouldn't* use speculation and hypothetical guesswork derived from his experience?

    • @Crosby4hyg
      @Crosby4hyg 8 років тому

      +Gagan Baath yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. A dedicated body builder keeps accurate track of their body weight, body fat percentage, and how much they can lift. Their life is basically a scientific experiment regarding muscle growth. Their answers regarding a correlation between muscle-soreness and muscle growth are a lot more meaningful than some scrawny guy who has read a few contradictory, non-conclusive scientific articles.

    • @failedfishermanBC
      @failedfishermanBC 8 років тому +2

      Crosby4hyg I completely disagree.
      I am an Indian, I've eaten Indian food every single day of my life. But I could never explain specifically why Indians have such high rates of heart disease compared to other ethnicities. I can only speculate.
      A scientist of any ethnicity can study the issue and publish papers, which this "scrawny" white guy, Hank, could study and review, and summarize to us.
      And sometimes, there just isn't a definitive answer to things. It doesn't mean the person trying to answer the question is unfit to answer it. It just means there isn't enough information on the subject.

    I have a few topics that others may want to discuss, possibly as future topics the show may cover as well:
    1. The layer of cells between the phospholipid bilayer and the muscle itself? They behave like stem cells, which band aid your controlled internal muscle injuries and then clot the outer layers, leaving new layers after recovery.
    2. The difference between short and long term muscle memory? Case Study, Olympian Sprinters.
    3. Where in the genetic code does the difference occur between short response and endurance response muscle memory?
    4. BMI vs. Muscle (Density vs. Mass)
    5. Adrenal Gland and Cortisol as an obstacle to recovery and progress as a result of intensive sessions.
    6. The recovery process using all of the above to create one coherent thing.

    I kinda had a weird and I guess a stupid question but theoretically if you were in a room that was say 500 degrees and sat near a fire that burned at a lower temperature would it feel cooler sitting next to it provided that you wouldn't die from how hot it was and could still sense the heat? Like how sitting near a block of ice feels cooler?

    • @oi23origin
      @oi23origin 8 років тому +1

      +Vincent Lopez That makes sense, considering cold things aren't so much cold, they just have less heat than whatever you're comparing them to. So yes, I would imagine that to be correct given that the person/entity in the room is sensitive enough to temperature differences to be able to tell the difference between very hot and very very very hot using only touch.

  • @trilloff
    @trilloff 8 років тому +1

    +SciSHow But does muscle soreness mean that the growth period is longer? Like if I am sore, my muscles should grow longer to fix the added repairs, as compared to not working out as much to prevent soreness(makes sense IMO). If there's any benefit to working out harder and getting sore, then it should be to have to work out less times per week. Does anyone know? I feel there should be more coverage on this topic then there is.

    Yeah pretty much. New stimulus should envoke soreness/doms. You'll adapt to it hopefully.
    Shock
    Adaptation/resistance
    Exhaustion
    In an ideal world, if you're never sore sure you'll get fitter and might grow a bit but you could probably do with working a little harder. If you're too sore to do your next workout entirely or are worse session to session you're probably training too hard. Assuming you're adequately hydrated, not sleep deprived or stressed out your mind and eating sensiblly etc etc, oh or ill or something, or had a limb shot off...
    I think newbies could probably get away with avoiding soreness the most then the more advanced you get soreness is going to become more of a thing when pushing boundaries.
    Although there's nothing wrong with avoiding doms for general fitness if you just enjoy hanging out in a gym and playing around with weights and doing a little cardio. It's a healthy passtime 💪

    When you first start lifting the muscle soreness is the WORST! I remember the first 3 weeks my biceps were so sore I couldn't even straighten my arms, the soreness does get easier though, it will still happen but much more manageable
