Foreign substances like dirt, tar, and food particles are expelled by coughing. Solid particles like this are trapped in mucus which is lead to the airway by cilia, which is then expelled by coughing. Fluid is also removed by coughing, but generally any sizable amount of fluid in the lungs isn't naturally removed beyond what can be coughed up.
That's the kind of information I'm asking them to cover. I'll have to refine my comment to be even more specific, there is certainly more to it than the "duh, coughing" I keep hearing.
I want to see a vid on cholesterol, like why your body makes it and why a little bad cholesterol is good for you while too much is bad for you, and what part the good cholesterol plays in all of this.
go to the channel nutritionfacts.org and you'll all the scientific research about cholesterol and tons of other topics in very short videos that are very easy to follow
+C this was a dumb joke but you're just being cringy replying this way. I know cringy is a cringy word, but there really isn't any other way to put this lol.
"Eating too much of anything can be unhealthy" feels a little dismissive of the dangers of eating too much protein. I would have liked you to discuss more in depth about what happens when do not get enough, or get to much of it.
Oh hey, they touched on something that actually has to do with me! I have PKU, which is a condition where I can't turn the amino acid phenylalanine into tyrosine, which is one of the conditionally essential amino acids--so I'm one of the people that it is essential for. Basically it amounts to my having to eat a super low protein diet because otherwise I'll have too much phenylalanine build up that my body can't process, and I have to take this phenylalanine-less protein drink (because otherwise I'd have almost no protein in my diet) that has tyrosine added to it, since I can't make it on my own. I was actually wondering if PKU would get a shout out, but I guess not lol.
Patrick O'Sullivan What kind of answer do you expect? SciShow doesn't answer comments. Unless you are creating a meme like the anus guy. He could ask on Patreon or he could do his own research. The topic isn't very complex.
Patrick O'Sullivan You don't say. And do you think copy-pasting the same line under almost every video for weeks is the way to go? He wouldn't even learn more from a SciShow video than from Wikipedia or talking to his physician, which he obviously did before or after his treatment.
Thanks for this one. I'm a year into a two year degree in Exercise and Movement Science, so I know about actin and myosin and stuff, but what I didn't know was exactly what the muscle 'tears' are. I've been speculating that it's actual damage to the myosin heads, and you all but confirmed that in this video. I'd love to know the exact nature of the 'tears,' so hopefully they'll cover that next year.
Thank you for this very informative video. You explained a lot of things in easy and understandable way in a very short period of time without unnecessary small-talk. Thank you once again and keep up great work!
All these people saying they shouldn't listen to Hank because he's thin and has very little muscle.. Like.. ITS FUCKING SCIENCE. lol. You can't fucking argue. That's like saying, "Well you don't know anything about cancer because you don't have it."
It's all about personal experience in regards to a gym goer's diet & their gains. "Protein Science" as interpreted by this video host can easily be called out as biased. If he was about that gym life he wouldve added that there are a ton of protein supplements that supply needed amino acids & formulated to produce good gains. The way he explains about muscle growth can be felt as too simple & he doesnt include more detail.
Sure, there are tons of different supplements, but supplements alone will not make you a beefcake. Supplements are just concentrated amino acids, so that you don't have to worry too much about what you ingest and can keep separate tabs on the calories you eat and take the proteins on the side. Many supplements are also phoney, stick with Whey and don't waste more money for nothing. You can also just drop supplements and eat almonds and eggs, much cheaper.
That's all fine and true, but... the reasons why protein suplements are so popular are; 1. Fitness industry aggressive and spamworthy* advertising 2. They are essential or even life-saving for people who, for whichever reason can not get the protein the other way 3. They are splendidly pragmatic. For people who work out, let's say 4 days a week; gym, calisthenics, something of a sort, they have to (!) have almost 2g of protein per Kg of body weight. If You're lets say 75kg that's ASTOUNDING 150g of pure protein. To have that much in food, you need around 5 to 6 meals ( as the human body will not catabolise more than 30g of protein in one turn of the cycle ), and it has to be a loooot of food. It's horrendously expensive, time consuming and even stressful because the body does spend energy and other nutrients to metabolize these protein. Chances are, with all that food you'll get a staggering amount of fat, exceeding the suggested daily intake vastly. * I know spamworthy is not a real word, smarta*s >.
That 30 gram thing is something that has made the rounds on body building sites but there is no real research behind it. You have a handful of athletes that do some weird "eat once a day" routine so if this was true they would get a total of 30 grams of protein per day. Also it is surprisingly easy to get the protein you need each day unless you are a professional athlete. It is in everything and keeps trickling in through out the day. If you eat 3 steady meals you should not need any protein supplements at all. In fact most people who take protein supplements is just adding empty calories in the form of yucky protein shake flavor. I prefer my empty calories to taste like ice cream. :)
The funny thing is, when the amino acids are deaminated, the keto acid produced can be converted into glucose and stored as glycogen in your liver. So if you're eating a tonne of protein and not exercising after, it essentially just goes to waste, part of the molecule is pissed out and the other part becomes a storage molecule or adipose fat. The majority of people in developed societies consume more protein than is required for their body and level of activity so it's just ironic that people put so much emphasis on it in diet
Thoughts from a formerly protein deficient couch potato: This video hits it on the head in eliminating the direct contribution of protein consumption to muscle growth, but I feel it severely under-appreciates just how much protein your body needs even /without/ constant stressors. I became protein-deficient without even thinking about it when I moved out on my own for the first time. I wasn't vegetarian. I ate plenty of meat when I went to fast food places and such - I just didn't keep much protein at home because meat is expensive and spoils quickly. I wasn't thinking about other sources of protein because I figured if you could get enough without eating any meat at all, you must just not need very much. Especially when you live a pretty sedentary lifestyle. Anyway, one day my sister (a nurse, in school at the time) was over to help me prepare for a move. We went for a short walk and then settled into packing away my clothes. I was tired from the walk and really didn't want to do any folding. At first my sister and I both snubbed it as my being lazy, but after a while I actually started to feel dizzy. I told my sister I didn't know why, but that little walk had really exhausted me. She asked what my diet had been like lately, and after a little review, it became clear I had NOT been getting enough protein. The guideline for a status-quo lifestyle without excessive activity was 4 grams per pound. For my, that was 44 grams of protein a day; I had been getting more like 10 for close to a year! At that point, I committed myself to eating enough protein. Even without being vegetarian at all, I struggled to make the 44-a-day goal.. it takes a lot of cooking. But after a few weeks of forcing myself to find it, even in "unhealthy" sources like chicken nuggets, I LOST weight, I was noticeably trimmer, and most importantly, I could breathe again. Simple tasks like laundry or sweeping didn't leave me drained anymore. I could walk my dog and still have energy to finish the dishes when I got home. It's important, like the video says, not to put all your faith in ANY single nutritional element, but seriously, after that experience I am convinced there are a lot of other people like me out there, who have become protein deficient without any way of knowing it. It takes a LOT of the stuff just to keep your body going. Worry about that before you worry about anything to do with building muscle.
3:38 I'm not sure if "creates new tissue" is an appropriate term - because tissue is a collection of cells, and when you work out and your muscles grow, the number of cells stays the same, only the cell size increases (hypertrophy). In contrast to this, hyperplasia is an increase in the number of cells and it's not exercise induced (according to medical school textbooks).
Can you post additional videos about Muscle Protein synthesis? Is there a limit on how much protein a person can absorb during each meal? This is a big debate in fitness circles and I would love to hear your take on it.
Studies show 25 gr of protein is an optimal dose, although is very complex to establish a dose since it differs from person to person depending their genes expression , anyway protein timing is almost irrelevany to MPS and the MTor Pathway trough mechanisms like the signaling of leucine in mps in the muscle, i have an article on that if you want ti check it out
+osian freegard typically what I do is do a mild workout, take my protein supplement (chicken, turkey, tuna, jerky) then workout vigorously after about half an hour
"It's not clear if you need to damage your muscle for growth." Did you mean to say it's not clear if you need to eat excess protein for growth? That would make more sense with the sentence that follows and with the general topic of the video. Otherwise, while this video offers good scientific insight, it fails to say anything about whether it is important to eat protein after you workout. Could I lift weights, not eat for 4 hours, and still expect to synthesize more muscle than was broken down?
Yes you can still get MPS in the muscle , in a graphic your mps in the muscle will decrese a little compare to a 5 min after workout due to insulin sensity mostly, is not about the timing, is about what you get in at the end of the day
As long as your body has proteins available, i.e. you're not starving, you would have no problem eating as usual, morning, midday and dinner. The number one factor is availability during your restoration phase, which means when you're resting/sleeping. The most important aspect of working out with muscle growth as the aim, is energy and water, so that you can push yourself that tiny bit more each time, without running out of available energy between sets. Carbs, a banana, a chocolate bar, müsli bar, something that your body does not need to work hard on to free get glucose, even sugar water will work(read a soda or something more specialized).
You have a loaded question. What you should be asking is whether or not protein consumption within a certain time period after overloading your skeletal muscles makes a significant difference in skeletal muscle growth. The answer is most likely 'no' for a time period of 4 hours, assuming you have a diet that steadily supplies your body with enough essential amino acids.
if you're going to reference a specific time in a video you should really provide the timestamp. that's kind of the expectation on UA-cam since it is 2016. also this is a scishow video, not a pewdiepie video which makes me even more surprised that there are still rude people commenting like you.
Jeffrey It's not rude, it's constructive criticism--which is very important for a show like this to consider how they can constantly improve to inform their audience with the most factual and most relevant scientific knowledge.
Dear SciShow - The Wikipedia figure with the amino acids contain 21 (Selenocysteine too), beware of the evil trolls on the internet going to count the number of amino acids - Also THANK YOU for using ribbon-structures for the enzymes later on in the video!
The point of taking additional proteines is that you want that the body has enough building blocks available when it needs them. If you do alot of work out, but eat little to get rid of the fat above the muscles, then the body might think that there's a food shortage and burn your muscles next rather than growing them. The reason why we don't store superflous proteines in form of muscles, as we store lipids in fat, is the fact that mucles use a lot of energy, even if you don't use them much. Having more mucles is more efficient at burning fat than running 1h per day.
Excellent video! It took me a year's worth of college courses (biochemistry and anatomy&physiology.....the prerequisites for which took two additional years) to learn what you said in 5mins. Note: Hank's lips get off from the audio around 2:25-2:35 and at 4:22 there's a weird double hand thing.....I think that's a production problem? Idk the technical words......I'm not very video/film production savy because I'm a science major! lol Also: Why do peppermints get holes in them when you suck on them?
wait from the presentation this sounded like proteins do not accelerate muscle growth at first but in the end you do say it helps.. I'm a bit confused about the intention of this video...
It's a way for your body to get more protein. If you already have enough protein, supplements aren't helping. If you don't have enough protiein, it can help.
If you eat an excessive amount of protein your body will only use as much as it needs and get rid of the rest. If you have significantly more muscle mass then average people your body would need more protein then average people. Protein supplements are not for average people.
kinda... If your average person is someone who doesent want to build any muscle then this is correct HOWEVER if your on about the average gym go'er then things like whey powder can help a lot. Ill explain, your only going to build muscle if you have an excess of protein. The rule of thumb is 1g a day for every pound of body weight is this excess yes maybe a little bit too in excess however its better to have too much than too little or you're gonna be wasting your time for the average person eating 140 or so grams of protein a day is hard... very hard... 4+ chicken breasts hard so you can use protein supplements to make this wayyyy easier. you still need to eat food mind you but thats why its called a supplement
With my job alone I was burning 3-4000 calories a day. Anytime you exert more than you consume you need extra nutrients. End of story. We had guys losing dozens of pounds of muscle and fat from the constant work load. I made sure to keep up with demand and consume a little bit of extra protein other macros and I actually gained weight. About 20lbs. We had a guy that came in weighing 240lbs. He now weighs 190. We've also had guys quit because they were losing too much muscle mass. They couldn't manage working out and then coming into work.
The thing about all this is, if you want to lose weight, cutting carbs down to the minimal amount and replacing them with protein helps you lose a lot of weight with no effort or hunger. Yay! You can eat until you're uncomfortably stuffed and still lose weight. When you're lifting for strength and size and you eat *way more* meat than you would ever want to (seriously, you will learn to HATE chicken in all its forms), you will gain much more strength and size far faster than you would eating normally.
"The thing about all this is, if you want to lose weight, cutting carbs down to the minimal amount and replacing them with protein helps you lose a lot of weight with no effort or hunger. Yay! You can eat until you're uncomfortably stuffed and still lose weight." Not true. I, and many others can easily eat above their Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) by just eating fats and proteins. All that matters is how much you eat, not what you eat. Besides, carbs are good for you. I'd rather not stop eating vegetables and other sources of fiber.
+SuperHoeCakes The difference is that it's so easy to overeat on carbs. How many servings in a cupcake? Three? One for us and three for our adipose tissue. It's really hard to overdo proteins because it takes so long to break them down. I'm type 1 diabetic so I can tell you a LOT about how long it takes to get food into sugar since I've had to think about it several times a day, every day for the last 33 years. Don't give up carbs entirely, but be especially careful about overdoing them. Eat all the protein you want and you won't get fat. I lost 45 pounds by changing nothing but my diet. Never hungry! :-)
+SuperHoeCakes Just cut some simple carbs like cookies and cupcakes, because they spike your insulin levels, making it harder for the body to burn fat; you can still enjoy your fibrous carbs like vegetables! (And if you want more proof just look up some more in depth info on the topic)
I'm not sure what the premise of this video is. Like, it's a nice little explanation of protein synthesis, but why that strawman argument about protein supplements having "magic muscle-building powers"? I think everyone who takes them is aware that they're just a way to, you know, *supplement* your protein intake when it's difficult to get enough with regular meals, especially within a certain calorie limit.
You'd be surprised how many beginners think that they NEED to drink protein shakes in order to build muscle or that by drinking them they can build more muscle.
Well, that depends on the situation. If you're on low calories or have little left for the day it's convenient and allows you a little more freedom and variety. Especially when at the last stages of cuts or during contest prep.
"animal based proteins" not going after you on diet but if all proteins are broken down to amino acids then does it matter from what creature, plant, etc it came from?
+Nick Yes, it does. Different sources have different amino profiles. In this case animal and dairy are richer in Leucine, which is a main trigger for muscle protein synthesis. That means you would have to eat more plant based protein per meal or supplement Leucine (BCAA) to get the same response. +Trevor You can still trigger maximised MPS 4-5 times a day without supplements if you spread your protein per meal wisely and eat enough, so technically you can considered it optimal. Now how convenient or easy it is to do so is another story.
Is the primary way your body produce vitamin D via the cholesterol in your skin, check your level of 25-hydroxi if you are worry about deficiency , since is the precursor of vitamina D, although you can get it almost everywhere in enhanced milk and cereals.
For people who don't regularly lift moderate to heavy weights, consuming lots of protein doesn't matter. However if you do workout often, it is important to get enough protein for all of those muscle fibers to be properly repaired, and to build more. It doesn't take an insane amount though, around 0.8 grams per lean body weight is an excellent starting point. But it depends on genetics, not everyone can synthesize muscle that quickly. Some will be faster, some will be slower.
Like other biological macromolecules such as polysaccharides and nucleic acids, proteins are essential parts of organisms and participate in virtually every process within cells. Many proteins are enzymes that catalyse biochemical reactions and are vital to metabolism. Proteins also have structural or mechanical functions.
excellent! However we do not need animal protein or any protein foods/supplement intake. We need protein building blocks (amino acids etc) found in most raw plant based foods.
For a someone who knows something of Biology and Biochemistry, proteins are like the machines that almost do everything in our bodies, but for most people I think,is just has a muscle grower.
Very interesting! Can you tell us if it's possible to eat too much protein (as you mentioned early on in the video "eating too much of anything can be really unhealthy") and what problems might result? Also do you know about how much we actually need?
forgive me if you've made a video on it, but could you explain ketosis? I've heard a ton about it and understand the basics but not the science. thank you, I really enjoy this channel:)
Eggs and meat?? just go to nutritionfacts.org here on youtube and search protein, there's no need to eat the 12 essential amynoacids altogether to absorb them
its 20 essential aminos and meats/eggs have them and in bulk, things like nuts and veggies only have a selected few and require a higher variety and volume to meat the nutritional recommendation and are harder to absorb the protein.
***** dont say bullshit, only processed meats and dairy have actual negative health effects because they contain plastic chemicals. i eat meat and dairy products by the pound and my doctor tells me i have a healthy cardiovascular system.
Abdel Armstr the terminator doesn't waste time talking about weight lifting like a weak nerdy girly man with no muscle on his pectorals. The terminator speaks with his results.
I love these nutritional videos. Cutting through all the food/diet BS we wade through on a daily basis with real science. Please make one about cholesterol, since I've never really been able to figure it out; and another that looks at simple sugars in more detail. I get so sick about people going on about HFCS like it's poisonous evil Satan-juice, rather than just an inexpensive blend of normal common sugars.
+Dylan T tell that to the people who die of vitamin and iron deficiency, as well as the animals killed in the deforested areas used to grow excess plants.
if you are dying from vitamin and iron deficiency you should be eating vitamin packed beans, grains, greens, fruits and vegetables. As for deforestation, most of the plants we grow are for livestock you ass.
I like what he said at the end, because some people think that I drink a protein shake everyday because I'm trying to lose weight or gain muscle, but in reality it's because I just don't get enough protein in my diet otherwise. I drink that for the same reason I take a multivitamin (and a few supplements based on my specific needs) everyday, to make sure that my body has all the nutrients it needs to function. Because I'll be the first to admit that the food I eat has very little nutrients.
Bruh i don't get wutchu tryin to sai u sain my 450g of protein intake is wasted and that i drink 6 shakes a day for nuttin. Du u even lift brah u so skinny lel.
Balloon Man yeah i like puzzles in my free time confuses the body really good i also do yoga and zumba on the days that i should squat and deadlift heavy confuses the hell out of my body.
What amazes me so much is this concept people have that healthy food is more expensive. I am eating much healthier food then I did a year ago and am spending half as much. Gone are the store burritos, hotdogs, etc. It may not be this gimmicky stuff like raised on the moon away from all pests and bacteria, fed on a all natural moon soil. It is still a lot healthier and cheaper then the stuff I used to eat.
+Marius Birkkjær Madsen nope set all new pr's and alas not one selfie to show for it, i have a problem with sleep and some days my body just keeps producing cortisol and adrenaline and it keeps me going all day. I finished the day off with a 5 mile run with the dog as well
Hm, it seems to me that this is not as well reserched than other videos. If you exercise you are generating a stimulus for muscle growth. But you can influence how much that leads to actual muscle growth. - The energy level in the body is important. If there is a good amount of carbohydrates and therefore insulin you build more muscles with a given training stimulus. In early bodybuilding they used insulin to force muscle growth. That can be dangerous and I don't recommand it, but you can influence the insulin levels in your body after a workout and that has an influence on how effective your body translates that workout in muscle growth. That's why a post workout shake contains carbohydrates. - Sleep: That is the time to repair the body. Having not enough or just very bad sleep can have a negative effect on muscle growth. - Protein: 1.) constant moderate levels of amino acids in the blood are considered anti-catabol. 2.) a short but high rise of amino acid levels in the blood after a workout can have anabol effects (slightly of course). Why use all that powder? - For that fast and high rise you want after a workout most natural protein sources are not absorbed fast enough. A Schnitzel does not cut it. You can drink natural whey. But the powder is easier to store and use. - Many natural protein sources come with other stuff, e.g. fat. Protein powder ist basically just protein. That makes it easy to take care of the protein intake while minimizing the calory intake. Again you could make you intake calculations with normal food, but the powder is simple to use and allows for easy adjustments. So: - No, more protein does not make for more muscles - no pain no gain - but: Not enough protein can limit the benefit of a workout, and protein powder ist a convenient way to make sure of that (but as always: the dose makes the poison)
odisy64 at my heaviest eating a meat heavy SAD standard American diet at 235 pounds. Little over 3 years later eating a plant pure diet weighing 165 pounds at age 50 feel like I'm doing pretty damn good.
i was always curious as the the exact mechanism behind how your body knows to make MORE muscle, rather than just replacing what was originally lost and breaking even
Most typical information hanging around among fitness enthusiast is that you need 1.5 grams of protien per 1 pound of weight. So if you weigh 120 lbs, then you should supposedly eat 180 grams of protein. On the whole, yes, your body probably only needs protien before or after a workout to maximize the synthesis and the rest is just excess. However, your body continues to break it down throughout the day. That's why they recommend to keep a steady stream of protien. The problem with most humans today in the westernized world is that they eat too many carbs and sugars in my opinion. To really gain muscle (or just "look" fit), just increase your protien intake by maybe 30-50 more grams a day and reduce your overall carb intake and, of course, work out. This obviously depends on your lifestyle, but if you're a typical American who sits at a desk at work most of the time, this is probably the way to go. If you want to get even bigger after that, then make whatever adjustments you need to.
Could you please follow up this video with Phenylketonuria. It's a disorder that results in the lack of phenylalanine breakdown, which is a significant component of food protein.
Excellent video. Well done!! It would have been a tad even better if you stated what happens to access eating of protein. Perhaps, talk about Gout. Otherwise awesome!!
If i recall correctly , extra aa gets converted into fat via lipolysis and not glucose, when levels of glucose are low, is when the body breaks down the aa of the muscle to use as glucose and not the other way around, please correct me if i'm wrong.
Can you do one on vitamin B12 and its dietary sources and how it affects the human body and how people live without a clear source of it in their diets?
Athletes that workout 4-5 times a week with a variety of intensity need more protein than the average person. In fact it's often the case that athletes get less protein in their diet than what they need. Whey protein help serve this purpose, for athletes or individuals that exercise and have physically demanding jobs. It doesn't mean that an individual that is working out with the same frequency and intensity as an athlete doesn't need more protein as well. Maintaining a healthy and balanced diet is difficult in itself but with exercise even more challenging. More protein does not mean less fruits, vegetables, monounsaturated/polyunsaturated fat, and other vitamins and minerals. It's important to consult your doctor about working out and changing your diet. Athletes and individuals with physically demanding jobs even more. Be proactive about your diet learn about food labels, product claims, calculate your BMI and body fat. Don't get discouraged about the results! Take small steps to make healthy food choices eat lean meats, balance eating complex carbohydrates, try a various types of vegetables, and eat healthy fats. It's REALLY hard to maintain a healthy diet, it's hard for athletes too, remember that and don't give up.
Just some two sense: Exercise, eat, repeat. What you put in is what you get out, thus crap in is crap out, and good in is good out. "Whey mixture" is a fancy way of saying a little of the good whey isolate, and a lot of other crap. Your body also can only productively use a certain amount of protein per intake, and the rest is stored as fat because it doesn't need it, even if you think you damaged your muscles well during a lift session, or long run.
Just to clarify on the practical application of protein in muscle building: Protein is what is considered a macro nutrient, alongside carbs and fats. All three macros are important for muscle building and are needed TOGETHER to achieve growth. The subject of the ratio between carbs, proteins and fats in your diet is a hot topic in the bodybuilding community and can look quite daunting to someone just starting out. A great source for anything fitness and diet related is Bodybuilding(dot)com. You can find a lot of credible, scientific supported information for a lot of subjects. Go learn about the caloric amount your body needs when you're working out, the ratio of macros in your diet to support your fitness goal and about each macro itself and the different types you need to get in your diet. Hope that helps someone.
This is one of very select amount of shows that I don't think to fact check/question your show. This is due in part because of your consistency, citing reliable sources, stream lined presentation and even owning up to when you are wrong or when something has changed. Keep up the great work guys!
the only thing i know for sure is that when i work out and dont use protein supplements, my growth, recovery rate, and aesthetic improvements are severely diminished.
I wish you guys also covered the kind of diseases you can get from excessive protein consumption. It seems so relevant to the episode.
I agree. Osteoporosis for example.

How do our lungs clear themselves out properly after events such as choking on solids, partial drowning, smoke inhalation or pulmonary edema?
* cough *
Yes, that's obviously part of it but likely not the whole picture of what happens.
Foreign substances like dirt, tar, and food particles are expelled by coughing. Solid particles like this are trapped in mucus which is lead to the airway by cilia, which is then expelled by coughing. Fluid is also removed by coughing, but generally any sizable amount of fluid in the lungs isn't naturally removed beyond what can be coughed up.
there's a specialized leukocyte (who's name I can't recall) in each alveolus.
That's the kind of information I'm asking them to cover. I'll have to refine my comment to be even more specific, there is certainly more to it than the "duh, coughing" I keep hearing.

+SciShow It repeats sections of the video at times. Perhaps the upload screwed up. Possibly try reupping?
Thank u
this isn't the only video its happening too. Other channels are getting the same issue it seems. quite annoying.
Can you do one on cerebral aneurysms? I had one rupture at 19 and would love to learn more!
Who?

It seems like you are suffering from permanent brain damage. Otherwise you wouldn't paste this shit over and over again.
Patrick O'Sullivan
What kind of answer do you expect? SciShow doesn't answer comments. Unless you are creating a meme like the anus guy. He could ask on Patreon or he could do his own research. The topic isn't very complex.
Patrick O'Sullivan
You don't say.
Do a video on CRISPR and Genetic engineering
We just filmed one last week! We'll be uploading it in a few weeks.
In a nutshell just did a really good one
+SciShow Yes, have some.
I saw a DIY CRISPR kit online for like 100 dollars. It was meant to genetically engineer yeast. www.the-odin.com/gene-engineering-kits/
Thank you for this very informative video. You explained a lot of things in easy and understandable way in a very short period of time without unnecessary small-talk. Thank you once again and keep up great work!
Shut up
All these people saying they shouldn't listen to Hank because he's thin and has very little muscle..
He did say that, he just said you can also get them from the correct food.
That's all fine and true, but... the reasons why protein suplements are so popular are;
1. Fitness industry aggressive and spamworthy* advertising
2. They are essential or even life-saving for people who, for whichever reason can not get the protein the other way
* I know spamworthy is not a real word, smarta*s >.
One of the best informative video on this subject i found , TY
The funny thing is, when the amino acids are deaminated, the keto acid produced can be converted into glucose and stored as glycogen in your liver. So if you're eating a tonne of protein and not exercising after, it essentially just goes to waste, part of the molecule is pissed out and the other part becomes a storage molecule or adipose fat. The majority of people in developed societies consume more protein than is required for their body and level of activity so it's just ironic that people put so much emphasis on it in diet
Thanks for answering all of these questions on here. When you finally are ready to ask and learn something UA-cam is the answer.

Thoughts from a formerly protein deficient couch potato:
This video hits it on the head in eliminating the direct contribution of protein consumption to muscle growth, but I feel it severely under-appreciates just how much protein your body needs even /without/ constant stressors.

Studies show 25 gr of protein is an optimal dose, although is very complex to establish a dose since it differs from person to person depending their genes expression , anyway protein timing is almost irrelevany to MPS and the MTor Pathway trough mechanisms like the signaling of leucine in mps in the muscle, i have an article on that if you want ti check it out
So, what is the best time to intake protein if you plan on working out or doing strenuous exercise?
Yes please! The more citations the better!
+osian freegard typically what I do is do a mild workout, take my protein supplement (chicken, turkey, tuna, jerky) then workout vigorously after about half an hour
Ok, I will take that advice onboard thanks.
First video from SciShow in a really long time that I feel didn't explain the subject nearly enough.
"It's not clear if you need to damage your muscle for growth."
Did you mean to say it's not clear if you need to eat excess protein for growth?
How can one alleviate the putrid protein farts from consumption?

Idk the technical words......I'm not very video/film production savy because I'm a science major! lol
Also: Why do peppermints get holes in them when you suck on them?
wait from the presentation this sounded like proteins do not accelerate muscle growth at first but in the end you do say it helps.. I'm a bit confused about the intention of this video...
It's a way for your body to get more protein. If you already have enough protein, supplements aren't helping. If you don't have enough protiein, it can help.
to expand on what proteins do in the body. along with restrictions.
4+ chicken breasts hard so you can use protein supplements to make this wayyyy easier. you still need to eat food mind you but thats why its called a supplement
randomcow505 Yah I was talking about a statistically average person who doesn't go to the gym at all let alone lift.

What's your job?
+Michael B Male Stripping
Sounds typical of a labor-intensive job. It's killer.

I thought at the end I would actually get an answer if supplements actually work xD
They work if you exercise well enough. Some people take too much supplement and are just wasting protein and money.
I learned more in less than 5 minutes than I did in 4+ months in Human Physiology class.
Citation needed on multiple counts.
"The thing about all this is, if you want to lose weight, cutting carbs

you're uncomfortably stuffed and still lose weight."
Not true.
1:41 -- "Using these specialized enzymes called proteases."
That's what I was thinking lmao, like wut?

Hey Sci-Show! How does our body make vitamin D from sunlight exposure?
UV light breaks down cholesterol into Vitamin D
Is the primary way your body produce vitamin D via the cholesterol in your skin, check your level of 25-hydroxi if you are worry about deficiency , since is the precursor of vitamina D, although you can get it almost everywhere in enhanced milk and cereals.
Great video and a massive fan from the guys from crash course!
I snort protein to get these guns💪🏻
Cocaine is an alkaloid, not a protein.
What's the deal with airline food?
Fabulous topic. We get complete knowledge on proteins amino acids. Facts about proteins. Well done

Like other biological macromolecules such as polysaccharides and nucleic acids, proteins are essential parts of organisms and participate in virtually every process within cells. Many proteins are enzymes that catalyse biochemical reactions and are vital to metabolism. Proteins also have structural or mechanical functions.

+Spoo Rin if you're not joking you really need to get your facts straight.

GO VEGAN!
GO OMNIVORES!
tell that to the dead male chicks, the dead calves the people dying of heart disease.
I only speak to dead things when I'm cooking them, and that's usually just me telling them how delicious they are.

Go on, list some more people that are meat eaters and killed millions.
- Protein:
1.) constant moderate levels of amino acids in the blood are considered anti-catabol.
So:
- No, more protein does not make for more muscles
- no pain no gain
- but: Not enough protein can limit the benefit of a workout, and protein powder ist a convenient way to make sure of that (but as always: the dose makes the poison)

Proten Powders do have magical muscle building powers. At least the ones with testosterone do.
This was a very strong episode.
i was always curious as the the exact mechanism behind how your body knows to make MORE muscle, rather than just replacing what was originally lost and breaking even
Most typical information hanging around among fitness enthusiast is that you need 1.5 grams of protien per 1 pound of weight.
Love your white and gold shirt, Hank!
More of these!
Can you do one on vitamin B12 and its dietary sources and how it affects the human body and how people live without a clear source of it in their diets?
You should do a video on ketosis, and how unhealthy carbohydrates can be.
Thanks for those informations Sir !
Proteins are cool and all, but that shirt was rad Hank. I love it
Athletes that workout 4-5 times a week with a variety of intensity need more protein than the average person. It's REALLY hard to maintain a healthy diet, it's hard for athletes too, remember that and don't give up.
thank you so much for this video. Can you do more about this type of subject more the sport way. that will be awsome!!
So are you saying that athletes and body builders really don't need to be drinking protein shakes everyday, or consistently?
Andrew Johnson basically, yeah
This video is not very clear, and not mailing a great argument in either direction.
It's so cool my body is a constant chemist, now I don't feel so bad going for that art degree.
In Crash Course, Hank talked about John possibly being a robot, but the way Hank glitched out, I'm starting to wonder if he is the robot
Always good to know the interesting information about protein
Just some two sense: Exercise, eat, repeat. What you put in is what you get out, thus crap in is crap out, and good in is good out. "Whey mixture" is a fancy way of saying a little of the good whey isolate, and a lot of other crap. Your body also can only productively use a certain amount of protein per intake, and the rest is stored as fat because it doesn't need it, even if you think you damaged your muscles well during a lift session, or long run.
Just to clarify on the practical application of protein in muscle building:
Protein is what is considered a macro nutrient, alongside carbs and fats.
Keep up the great work guys!
well, bodybuilders prove that a diet high in protein work for building muscles. If is healthy or not i dont know but ot works
the only thing i know for sure is that when i work out and dont use protein supplements, my growth, recovery rate, and aesthetic improvements are severely diminished.
