AAWireless: How To Make Android Auto Wireless | Wireless Android Auto USB Dongle Review and Setup

  • In this video we will be taking a look at the AAWireless. This USB device allows for you to use your Android Auto system without needing a wire between your phone and car. Normally to have wireless Android Auto you needed a special (and usually aftermarket) head unit installed in your car that actually supported android auto wireless. But with the AAWireless, you are able to plug the device into your car and create a wireless connection between your phone and car. When you're done with your car ride, you're able to leave the AAWireless in your car (usually plugged in) and it'll be ready to go when you come back to your car.
    AAWireless is a direct Carsfi alternative.

      @BeardedTechGuy  3 роки тому

      Sorry for the delay in response, I missed this comment. The Telluride had the larger screen but the Sportage had the smaller screen. The wide screen capability is limited by the head unit at this point and not Android Auto, or the AAWireless. I'm hoping Kia will release an update that allows for full use of the screen with Android Auto.

    Hmm, I bought the Carsifi wireless AA adapter. I received it last week and so far works very good! I have a 2016 GMC Sierra Denali and the minute I open the door my radio turns on and the adapter connects to my phone within 3 seconds. The only downfall is that when I turn off my truck the radio stays on for about 3 minutes and then it turn off. Some factory default setting I guess! So, as long as the radio still on, the AA wireless dongle still connected to my phone.

    • @BeardedTechGuy
      @BeardedTechGuy  3 роки тому +1

      I tried messing around with the DPI settings in AAWireless and it doesn't seem to help. I'm like 99% certain the wide screen is controlled by KIA at this point. If you install any of the navigation updates besides the original factory one from 2020 you'll get the ability to have the right panel be usable by a few KIA widgets (anything mid 2020 and beyond should already have it, you just need to enable it) . Nothing special, but better than nothing. I am hoping since they added that capability through an update then at some point we'll actually get to use the whole thing for AA.

    • @BeardedTechGuy
      @BeardedTechGuy  3 роки тому +2

      I set DPI to 100 and did manage to enable split screen for AA but the third right panel still is useless. Here is a picture of how it looks with split screen on AA: imgur.com/gallery/CHOoqmc

      The phone doesn't have to be plugged into power for this to work (my pixel 6 pro rarely is in the car), but you may have to depending on your phone and battery level. Typically the Android Auto ports on cars are very low power so getting a higher capacity charger is usually a good idea depending on need.

    • @BeardedTechGuy

      The following is for the Kia Telluride: Not exactly. The current versions do not exactly allow that. You can use Android Auto on 2/3 of the screen and then on the right 3rd you can run kia apps, but not an additional Android Auto app. There is supposed to be a new updating coming out this month. I'm hoping this update includes the ability for real split screen or even just full screen use with android auto but there is no information it'll be included.

    • @BeardedTechGuy
      @BeardedTechGuy  2 роки тому

      Sorry I thought this was on a kia telluride video I did so I answered based on that originally.... For your actual question, the ability for split screen will depend on the head unit. You can force split screen by changing some settings within Android auto, but depending on your screen it may not look that awesome.

    • @willjusti

      I have a Tiggo 8, the screen is 10.5", very big. Android Auto via its native cable already splits the screen in 70/30. • @BeardedTechGuy

      You can have two phones paired to the AAWireless. On power up, the AAWireless will connect to the last phone that it was connected with if both are available on power on. So if Device1 was last connected to the AAWireless and both Device1 and Device2 are nearby on power on Device1 will be used. If the previous device was Device2 then Device2 would be connected to. If you wanted to switch which phone is connected you would want to make sure BT and WiFi are off on the previously connected phone.
      This can be a bit annoying if you park near your home and both phones are nearby. They say they will work on adding a way to select devices in the future, but for now that's not a function.

      For the telluride (at least in the 2020 SXP) the data USB port will turn off 5 minutes after the car is locked and will turn on as soon as the car is unlocked. I park in my driveway close to the house so if I am in the front of the house it will stay connected to the AAWireless for the 5 minutes which once in a while is annoying but I just turn wireless off on my phone and my issues go away. Great question! With the AAWireless, you plug it into the USB port you would normally plug your phone in for Wired Android Auto (if you car doesn't have AA then this won't work for you). Your phone will then connect directly to the AAWireless first over Bluetooth and then over wireless (5GHz or 2.4Ghz depending on location and settings). This does NOT use wireless hotspot but instead have a direct wireless connection between your phone and AAWireless.

    • @BeardedTechGuy

      Most phones will detect that there is no Internet connectivity and stay connected but use cellular for data. There are a handful of devices that have an issue with this, but they are listed on their support site. I'd recommend taking a look at it before ordering.
      Currently that is not supported with the AAWireless. The phone has to be directly connected to it over WiFi which means your phone cannot be used as a hotspot. They indicated they would look to include that function in a future update but at this point there is no time frame. I would say at this point just assume that it won't be possible.

      @@BeardedTechGuy I ended up testing it just after posting my original comment since I forgot that I had one of these units shipped to me a few months ago.
      And the result: The tap limits are removed with AAWireless! Long libraries/playlists no longer truncate while driving.
      Before this, with wired AA, I had to root my Android, install Xposed Framework with SAAX, Sensible Android Auto: Xposed. And each time AA updated, it would break the module (it seems intentionally) and then I have to wait for the dev to update SAAX. It was a real pain.
      As for the limitation, it was something like 6 Taps and the screen would prevent any more taps, and long lists would be truncated so it looked like you were missing a ton of playlists, which might prompt you to fumble with your phone. It won't re-enable until you were parked, and you were stuck with the few playlists you could tap through. I think Apple does this with Carplay as well. It sucked.

      So I did some testing over a longer period of time.
      In 30 minutes on a Pixel 3 streaming YT Music and with GMaps running navigation the battery went from 95% to 88%. So a 3 hour car ride would probably drain 50% of the battery (lots of buffer space mathematically it would only be 42%).
      In a 5 minute time frame on a Pixel 3 streaming YT Music and with GMaps running navigation the phone charged over wireless with the built in wireless charger in my Telluride from 88% to 90%. So realistically, the wireless charger should be able to keep up and allow for unlimited usage.
      Neither instance increased the phone's temperature even with the case on. I imagine if running for a few hours you'd probably see a temperature increase for the phone specially if using wireless charging. Me personally anything over a hour car ride and I'd probably want to use a wired charger or just not bother charging at all depending on the situation.
      Hope that helps!

      As of right now Android Auto requires a direct connection over WiFi. For the AAWireless they said they were going to look into a way to allow for connectivity over a cars hotspot to allow your situation to work but I don't think they provided a timeline for if/when that would be possible.

    • @BeardedTechGuy

      It should work as long as your car supports wired Android Auto. I've learned that Android Auto is a bit all over the place with compatibility with things (this is an Android Auto issue, not these adapters) so there is a chance it just won't work but I am not aware of any cars that support wired android auto and the adapters don't work with at this time. Your phone must also support wireless android auto as well.

    • @BeardedTechGuy
      @BeardedTechGuy  3 роки тому +1

      That will depend on your car and how it handles the power to the USB port. In my car (2020 Kia Telluride) it turns off USB power after 10 minutes of the door locking so I do not have to unplug it. If the car doesn't turn off power to the port ever, you'll have to decide if you drive often enough for the low amount of power the AAWireless to not kill your car battery.

      @BeardedTechGuy  3 роки тому +1

      I don't know unfortunately, but you can test it yourself pretty easily as the port in your car will act the same weather its your phone running AA or AAWireless.
      You can test out how your car handles the power by having your phone plugged in running android auto over wired. Then you can turn off the car, open the door, close the door, and lock your doors. I'd then wait up to 15 minutes to see if the phone stops charging. If the phone stops charging that means power to the port is turned off, if it doesn't stop charging then power is still applied.

    • @BeardedTechGuy

      When you disconnect the AAWireless from the USB port on your car then the wireless android auto connection will drop. Once the phone is plugged in Android Auto will start. This works fine on my Pixel 3, but if you have a phone that's a bit under powered its possible the switch might cause a bit of delay.
