Finding the best direction on a 2 way trail!

  • So most of the trails in Duluth are built for 2 way traffic. These trails are also popular with hikers so there is no way to really know whom you'll see around a blind corner. You might think this means they are less fun because you can’t just bomb the trails. Well it also means that one trail can be ridden as two different experiences.

    My favorite, lots of lines to take, both ways are a good time. I never had an issue of it being both ways.

    That “good old fashioned huck to flat” is 100% rollable and smooth! Give it a try next time you are up there! Brewer us a fun area. I like two way trails, as you mentioned it’s a different experience each way. Growing up on the west one way trails were so scarce, but trail areas were much larger and less dense than here in Minnesota. Great video and great riding Brian!

      Now I had to give that a try. That ledge never looked rollable to me. I'm sure the single direction helps on busy trails. Thanks.

    Mammoth in Chaska has no directionality, so it’s nice to get the different ride. But most people know the best way to ride the fast pieces so it’s pretty rare to have an issue. I rode Friday night and ran into a group of two and another solo rider. I usually stop and yield and get off to wait. It’s nice to see others enjoying the ride even if I have to stop and wait. Sometimes people want to say hi and talk and that’s fun too! I think people need to stop being so serious and remember why they ride. If it’s only for selfish thrills then I wouldn’t really want you on the trail in either direction!😁

      If a trail is has no direction, I typically look at TrailForks and see how others are riding it. Can't always trust the start and stop points but look at 3 or 4 rides and you'll see a pattern.
      Yeah, people get too caught up in being fastest and forget why we ride.

    I typically ride it clockwise, but switch it up occasionally. I wish that huck to flat had a bit more of a landing, I eye it up every time. I'll have to look at rolling it next time.

      Seems you can roll it. I always assumed it was a drop.

    Homebrew is fun both ways! As most trails are. You're right, the unidirectionality of non-DH trails is a very Minnesota/midwest thing. Its just more overly cautious planning brought on by people who don't really understand MTB. By the way, you can roll that "huck to flat." I thought the same thing until I saw it until Travis proved me wrong.

      Dang, I'll have to give that a hard look next time. I always assumed you had to huck that. It's interesting to read how one way trails are defended. I figure it is for the lowest common denominator.

    Curious topic. Ive ran into, not in recent years, people going wrong way. I say wrong way but they don't don't care or don't hear or both. Making trails two ways... I don't know but I'll admit to riding trails backwards here just for fun... During early season usualy. One of my thoughts, in recent years is sponsore a "Wrong way Weekend" on good known trails... Just for one weekend, with signs etc. But that would create more issues for people not familar with trails.....

    I use a Timberbell, it the trails are fast pace and blind corners I have the bell on. I use a Timberbell so usually people in the nature hear me, but city folks might be deaf or almost deaf it seems for some reason, probably blasting their ears with music on their headphones. I am always ready to brake, and ride according to the conditions,and situation.I've not crashed into anyone yet. those headphone and ear bud people don't seem to be in the nature here, so it's nice. but a lot of the time I am completely alone, but been riding in group rides sometimes.
    Seems like most people here want to enjoy the nature and be aware of their surroundings.

    We unfortunately have to put up with 2-way trails - for lots of reasons like access points and open access for hikers and trail runners, I totally get that. But, in a perfect world - all trails are one-way and there are no hikers or runners on the MTB trails.

    • @BrianVaughn
      @BrianVaughn  2 роки тому

      I don't mind runners or hikers. I think we have it very easy compared to out west.

      @@BrianVaughn true, unless you go to a designated MTB park like Keystone, Winter Park, or Breckenridge, you're going to have multiuse and two-way traffic - even at many of the Moab trails. I'm ok with it and know it going in. But yesterday I ran into some hikers at Murphy - even though Murphy has 15+ miles of designated hiking trails with signs that say "No Bikes", these people still want to hike and run on the MTB singles track - and there is nothing we can do about it.

    Always assumed the trails here were one-way because of the amount of people riding in such small areas, compared to say, out west where there's many more trails that are much longer so the likelihood of running into others is diminished. I prefer the one-ways but do wish we had more short 2-way connector trails so it would be easier to session some of the one-way bits, especially up at places like Cuyuna where doing another run can mean a long route back to the start (think Winze or Bobsled).

    • @BrianVaughn
      @BrianVaughn  2 роки тому

      I've had rides out west where you couldn't ride 100 yards without stopping for hikers or riders. I think it does give the builders some freedom to build one way trails.

    The vegetation and rock slabs is very similar to what I have in Norway. that trail looks awesome. Maybe some plants we don't have here, but looks like it's the same.

    Definitely not a downhill only jump and drop trail.😀 But I don't mind trails being two-way, all trails where I ride are. Also they are all multi-use. But I wish the trails had official names. Most don't.
    Some trails here are downhill only cus they are so steep you just can't climb them, but ost I can ride both ways, but some have sections you have to walk.

    • @BrianVaughn

      Yeah, it's a local thing here for XC trails. Most have a distinct flow so it makes sense to be one way.

    Two way trail’s aren’t a problem…. Until it’s a problem.
    Personally I’m not a fan of two way trail. Not from my perspective, I control my speed, and bike…. Other’s do not, and therein is the rub.
    In the last 2.5 year’s many many new riders know nothing of directional trail.
    There’s a trail, I’m gonna ride it…. Even if it says “wrong way.”
    Education goes a long way…. But only so far. 🤷‍♂️
    Does anyone but your riding circle even know about the close calls on two-way trail?
    If you say something to the land manager/club/trail boss… does it even make a difference?

      Yeah, I imagine you probably hear more about it than others. Think making all those twin cities trails one way didn't help the situation. So many riders here have never really had to think about direction while riding a trail.

    Got out to hillside today. Dry conditions, sand on many corners. Pair of joggers that didn't want to let us pass until I told the man I saw him park his truck and that I would be in the lot before him. He had some foul words for me and my son.
