I can remember when this was shown live on TVNZ.I was 9 at the time and our house was full of whanau there to watch from strat to finish.I still get teary eyed watching this waiata.
I was living in Sydney Australia in the 80’s and my sister brought a video of these kids singing and doing this haka and i was brought to tears each and every time i heard it i felt homesick as well.
Ataahua! I remember when i done the roofing contract for pakipaki school. One day i was up there working, and i heard this lil fulla say to his mates.. Let give this wahine something to listen to. They started their kapa haka pratice... I turned around, dropped my tools... and sat on the edge of the roof in awe. I felt privileged. As they gave me respect.. I humbled . xxx pakipaki!!!! awesome!
Must I add. My nan was the Kaia for this song when it first came to Pakipaki School. My nan is Nanny Jane Wainohu (née Timu), but may be known by some as Heni Wainohu. I am one of her Mokos. This song always gives me goosebumps when I hear it and cry as this song was sang to me in 2007 when I graduated Pakipaki School and was given the Dux award. Beautiful song.
@Dan Davis wowww i went out with a fine Wainohu chick at intermediate few years ago😂real nice family, turns out we were related 🤣🤦♂️. Yeah I'm from Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga (hastings), grew up in Ahuriri/Napier tho. Arohanui ki ō whanau
Hi Maori Brothers & Sisters, This video of Te Hokinga Mai, was in 1987 september that I saw this video. I still have this video. When I met a Maori Brother in the Sinai dessert working for a Peace Keeping Force MFO, his name is Mike Taankink. My roots is from the Moluccan Islands of Indonesia, but born in the Netherlands. My Moluccan culture is very simular as the Maori culture, that's why Mike & I get along well together. Mike infected me with the Maori Culture. Since then until now, I always listen to Maori songs, if it is gospel, modern, as long my hearts is enjoying the song. I wish al my Maori Brothers & Sisters God Blessings
I remember watching this with my Mum listening to singing it beautifully word for word and my then 3 year old actually sitting still listening to his nana with Awe. He turning 41 on June the 5th. Love and miss you Dearly mum pity we didnt have celfones to record back then. Also my besties Aggie & Cilla, this reminds me of those days we used to watch The whole recording of Te Maori the homecoming repeatedly. I Treasure thise memories also
This waiata is beautiful, reminds me of life growing up in the country you hear the Ruru in the tree early morning or late evening. So awesome when I hear this waiata❤
These kids made this waiata famous. Like all Maori songs, so amazing and it brings chills and thrills to your spine. Makes me remember my good friend, Natalie Dunn, who came from Pakipaki and left this life too early! Mauriora!
I can’t believe some people gave it the thumbs down. Sad alright. Anyway, such a beautiful waiata and tune, and these kids were so cool. Just love it. ❤️❤️❤️
Memories flood back as well as the tears. Love this song. I'm proud to be Maori & wish this generation could see how it was back in my day when Maori waiata was sung bountiful......starting from the kids!!!
Brings back awesome menories with the kura. Front row just about missed the whole thing due to a whanau member to whom i wont mention. She didnt want to go on at the last min. But hugs and kisses i went forwards for the both of us. Mum and gaygay watch from a far with the rest of the whanau..... still makes me cry watching this. My mummy gaygay mr higgins and the nannies and koro all gone... gee we went all over the motu with the kura.. thank you mr higgins aunties, koro, nannies, gaygay mummy to you all thank you for such a awesome times we had as kids. Sincere gratitude and humble blessings to the kai tito, nga mokopuna, Mea nga kuia. January 2019! This was the waiata that I was guided to listen to, after all these years. Therefore, thank you
They are the best singers of this waiata hands down all the way. The sweet voices of the children cannot be matched. I always have a tangi listening to this. You are massive.
This was a TV presentation shown back in 1988 if memory serves me correctly, called Te Maori - The Return Home, most kiwis recorded this on their videos at the time and probably have copies like this somewhere, I know I do but mine is damaged from old age and mould. There were also other performers like Bunny Walters (singing a song called Tekoteko), Cara Pewhairangi, and Patea Maori Club to name a few. It was a great show and I hope TVNZ release it on DVD one day.
that would be great if TVNZ did, perhaps I can enquire, it be a long shot...but yes I remember this as a kid...Te roopu Manutake, Te Waka Huia and many more my nan and koro who both have passed now recorded this on VCR as well....
TVNZ say it won't be released any time soon - pity, I really liked the song about the old kuia who went to the Te Maori exhibition in New York, it was cold and snowing and she missed her mokopuna. It was sung in Maori and narrated in English at the same time. All I remember is ....e hukarere ..... ki runga ki te kuia e. .. or something along those lines. Anyone else remember?
My koro Tom Higgins was Principal at Pakipaki School he wrote this song and my aunties and cousins are all grown up and got children of their own now. I love the clip with the Kuia and her Karanga though.
Thanks for posting this clip it brings back great memories when I lived in NZ for 5 years. I did tape the Te Maori Exhibition and then wiped it accidentally, one of the best video's I have seen in my lifetime.
its songs like these that makes u feel good to be a rangatahi maori kahore i ko atu i ko mai nga rangi penei ka taea te whakanui i to tatou nei reo rangatira ka mau te wehi
Holy crap!! I remember this. We had the same tape, I think recorded off tv?? We used to sit down as a family and watch it. And after it... was the old school Billy T James show. Farrk... nostalgia :D
Nah they had this performance up in the auckland town hall. I remebered it so well cause my mother took me there when I was younger. Im glad she took me the whole concert was awesome.
1984: I started at Hato Hohepa (St Josephs Māori Girls). I was only there for two years, but I clearly remember this night. We were staying at Houngarea Marae when we assisted with performing in this actual video of this waiata (We were performing, behind the scenes, because the focus that night was to be on our tamariki at the time) - we did come out eventually though below the stage lol. It was really emotional though, as we were told about the history. When we returned back to the marae, Halley's comet flew over the marae, so close, it was unbelievable .... it was like, our tīpuna who this waiata is about were watching us - and gave us the thumbs up. Seriously, after performing this waiata on that night and experiencing Halley's comet at the marae - we just had a very quiet moment and were in absolute awe of what was happening. Tau kē! I still get emotional sometimes when I think about that time - and that was well over 30+ years ago!
oOo only found this song scrolling through the pages.. This is amazing, coz this is the song that has inspired mwah to take a trip down there as well as mah hunz boiis whom will be performin later on today 24/11/10 at Pakipaki Primary - he tumuaki toku whaea. ~mw(",)h~
adam codlin this was for the return of all Maori Tsonga that travelled to the USA... it was made in 1986 and this school made this waiata famous...sung beautifully and I was just a little girl age six when my nan recorded this on a VCR....she has now passed and this will always remember me of her and my koro....
ka mau te wehi..ohhh the memories..awesomest waiata bck then and still is now..gee those kids are all grown up now they must surely cherish this moment.. kia ora.
I can remember when this was shown live on TVNZ.I was 9 at the time and our house was full of whanau there to watch from strat to finish.I still get teary eyed watching this waiata.

Love this song. Reminds me of my fucked up childhood and how to rise up and be a better man.
That's the one bro. Living life well is the best revenge.
And how to be the best parent that you wanted yours to be. Let that be your lifelong aim. ❤❤❤

This waiata is beautiful, reminds me of life growing up in the country you hear the Ruru in the tree early morning or late evening. So awesome when I hear this waiata❤
I LOVE THIS BY THE CHILDREN. SOUNDS BETTER THAN THE ADULTS. NGA MIHI TAMARIKI.
These kids made this waiata famous. Like all Maori songs, so amazing and it brings chills and thrills to your spine. Makes me remember my good friend, Natalie Dunn, who came from Pakipaki and left this life too early! Mauriora!
I was on that stage, 10-11years old, I'm 46 now. Natalie is my sister. I'm Sharon Dunn the youngest of my siblings.
Of all the versions I've heard of this song, I love this one the best, the children bought out the feelings and emotion relating to the lyrics
Mohaka school performed here that day and it went into the night back in 1986.I was only 3yrs old and I enjoyed every bit of it.
We sang this in Otahuhu Primary School when I was 8 or 9. I wish I could find the other 2 Maori Songs we sang.
Childhood memories, still gives me goosebumps to this day
I can’t believe some people gave it the thumbs down. Sad alright. Anyway, such a beautiful waiata and tune, and these kids were so cool. Just love it. ❤️❤️❤️
