- Aue te aroha might be described as the "anthem" of the school (St. Joseph's Maori Girls' College, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand). There is a 50 year link between the Rotary Club and the school, and each year the girls visit the club and entertain members.
Nanny Jessie Thomson is the composer of Aue te Aroha. It is a Catholic Anthem, She is an old girl of SJMGC and one of the old Patrons of the Hui Aranga. Hence SJMGC still performs it and it is only sung at Catholic gatherings throughout the world when Maori Catholics are present. Mena ka mohio koe ki nga kupu, ka mohio hoki koe ki te kaupapa o te waiata.

every time i hear maori and samoan music my eyes just well up with tears.
loved new zealand so much when living there till a few years ago.
it was the maori folk and samoan folk who mademy time there so special.
as a scotsman, i saw how much the crown had robbed from our cummunities here in scotland,but that maori and samoan people still had in tact.
i think this is what scottish people feel when they hear this music and why it effects us so deeply.

NZ Schools didnt promote compulsory maori language however they offered a component of maori learning to students via options unless it was a school like st josephs which promoted a strong committment to practicing maori. Kapa haka wasnt funded by the crown, each group had to fund raise to raise money for uniforms. They usually did kapa haka concerts to earn money. These maori people committed to retaining the maori language and the songs, in practice but were never allowed to force their ideals into the schools, or restructure the NZ education syllabus. Only the crown had this right to organise, select and manage the additional maori works which we have not had yet. Beautiful work like this was mostly used to entertain tourists or assist with ceremony provisions from schools or welcoming important people. The maori people however were always to remain under the treaty crown for direction and instruction. TOW 1840, held the entertainment rights and lost the knowledge of lawful committment.
Lets hope we can do the treaty again for the betterment of the people and the future generations. Scotland sometimes its about getting out what you put in, instead of blaming the crown. Lol E rite ana.

I'm a Yank~who attended Wesley College~ Paerata in mid '70s we were 1 the only ones in nz~ teaching Maori~ Tried to teach my 1/2 Maori cousins a few words~ meeting their 100 % ole School Grandma~ was spectacular~ very Dark~ Mangu te kiri~ She smoked heavily but had an ancient fun Maori happiness~ ;aughing all the time~ so local Pakehas gave my Maori Cousins a hard time~ So Grandma on her Maori warpath~ordered this Yank to go scar 'em~ ~ We all did~ Toi e mai~ Te Waka~ ki te kotau rangi taki to ama TE WAKA~ LOL~

AMAZING! You moved us so much! Strength, Pride, Youth, Beauty. The traditional Maori outfits would be best fitting compared to the school uniforms. Again, forgive my non-Maori comments (I live in Texas), but your tradition is too good, and we want to see more of this.

Further to my original response those choirs mention are also brilliant, along with the Patea Concert Party. As a Kiwi of Scottish / Irish heritage I consider those choir mention up there with my Pipe Bands from Scotland and the Irish singers..Any of those groups performing fill me wi pride.

WHAT is it about the Tangatawhenua that draws me so strongly to them. I visited NZ in June/July 2013 for the first time ever because of this and made amazing friends. I wish I could live in NZ and learn the language and culture of the Tangatawhenua.
On top of 3 years Poly/lang/Cult/Logistics~ my best mate 100% Maori John Te Kiri took me to some sacred forrests~ mineral Baths~that flow 24/7.~ He passed away a few years back~ at around 35~ He came to States~We went to Mexico~ He was of course~ spoken Spanish to~ LOL We laughed ~ Kon Tiki Aitutaki ~ Cook is~ is where the Maori left from~ to NZ ~ about 1,000 Aotearoa yrs back~ a few voyages between 100-300 yrs. around 1st landing~

Amazing how the Moari culture is so vastly different to that of the (vanishing) Australian Aboriginal culture.
why? Maori are polynesians that have been around for approx.1000 years in nz (coming originally from SEA), the indigenous people of australia have been around for over 50,000 years in australia and were the first human to migrate out of africa - I assure you they are not a vanishing culture as much as the white conservative aussies like to make out they are but retain their culture via their cultural dance/stories/paintings - obviously you know little about australian indigenous culture

Funny you say that as I am a Mareikura from Maungarongo and the words have been put on there for uri to see, i'm not sure that they have been put there for others as our waiata, kupu and actions are very important to us, so maybe for anyone who is interested they should contact via the website as you have suggested.

All people originated from somewhere, and it is interesting to see the the similarities in our culture and others around the world. From the Polynesian islands to America and back to Asia, although we are different peoples we are all connected through our traditions, beliefs, language and DNA.
I am proud to be Maaori, but it is annoying too see closed minded Maaori spouting their separatist views giving us a bad name.
We Maori have many similarities to the Ainu, the indigenous people of Northern Japan........we are not Chinese in origin......not that I have anything against the Chinese. If anything, the prehistoric ancestors movements from the fertile crescent could be traced back to that region.

this is what we call a waiata a ringa. most times in a waiata-a-ringa (action song) hand actions are complimentaryto the words. But other times there just done to look good.
