..........................................................
A song of welcome composed for the return of Maori taonga in 1986, on their return from the Te Maori art exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
The cry of the morepork
keeps coming back to me.
It is hooting out there
where the paths meet.
I was the one
who allowed you to go.
It was curbed,
my deep love for you
But now the formal return home;
greetings to you,
How my heart weeps
with joy.
Still standing tall is the prestige
and the enchantment of the ancestors
who have passed on.
Bring back the true spirit of the people
to help heal the survivor
crying like a slave (i.e. with loneliness)
and searching for the true path
for us all.

Hi Maori Brothers & Sisters, This song I heard it for the first time in 1987, when I met a Maori Brother in the Sinai dessert working for a Peace Keeping Force MFO. His name is Mike Taankink. My roots is from the Moluccan Islands of Indonesia. My culture is very simular as the Maori culture, that's why Mike & I get along well together. Mike infected me with the Maori Culture. Since then until now, I always listen to Maori songs, if it is gospel, modern, as long my hearts is enjoying the song. I wish al my Maori Brothers & Sisters God Blessings.
God bless you brother from New Zealand

I use to hear the Ruru crying every night out my window, it wasn't far from our whare. It brought beautiful dreams to a little Maori boy those days long gone now. I missed that Ruru. Never today the Ruru cries.
🥰
My dad used to play this in his garden I know he used to think of his Mum n dad that had passed on and now I play it and think of him :'( love u dad x
When I first heard this song I had no idea what was being said but the melody & the voices were so soothing. It sounded sacred...like a prayer. I stopped what I was doing & felt like praising God through this song. I felt humbled in the greatness of God`s creation & thankful that I am part of it. THEN, I read what the song was about. The haunting melody suits the lyrics perfectly.
You of the same Spirit Friend APTTMH.
i am italian and love these people amazing song!
Watching the blood moon luna eclipse alone in chch with this on repeat...I don't know why...I jst am...I feel my ancestor's with me and my heart aches...sending love and light to all
this is the first time i've heard this song and It touches my soul. I can't stop the tears listening to the sweet harmony. I don't understand the lyrics but this must be how angels sound in heaven. I am of samoan ancestry yet all of polynesia are my people. Polynesians (not to sound bias) are God's chosen people.

cool thats nice to hear.. im a proud maori.. unfortunately, i think our race and culture is deteriorating
Anjuli Para
I am very sorry if this is forgotten the wonderful culture !!!
Anjuli Para this is so not true. If anything our tikanga and te reo have come alive again thru our tamariki me mokopuna
Janice Aldridge if u say so.. we are losing our language is what I mean and a lot of Maori do not practice our traditions hence why our youth today have no respect and play up.. Some of us teach our kids but so many more don't, its hard for us when we living in a white mans world..
Yes so true awesome song ❤❤
My Granddaughter is seven and now lives in New Zealand, she is taking Maori singing and dancing lessons, each time I listen to this beautiful piece of music, I can picture this very happy girl. Thanking for sharing this.

Thanks for posting this song. Maori music touches my heart and soul, as does all Polynesian/Pacific music. It makes me long for my spiritually home and it reminds me of the fact that we all are brothers and sisters walking the sometimes rocky road of this world - in different colours, different ways and different places. Peace and respect from Sweden.

The children's pure voices being exalted by the harmony of the adults makes this my favourite ever version of this song. It's like they've captured the pure essence of the Maori culture. There is a lot we can learn or be reminded of from the past.
same :)

It's the voices of the children singing that's makes it beautiful!!! Makes me think of Whakaki , Nuhaka. Mahia, reminds me of the special blessing that it is to be Maori. It makes me connect with every thing in our Lakes, Rivers, Sea, forest, even the horse, kuri , especially the wild boar. The tuna back home. No place like home, thank you for sharing how and why this song came to be.
I'm so glad I made you happy!!! Te Atua Te Aroha kia koe!!!
Whilst like many I don't understand the lyrics, I can appreciate the sentimentality and feeling in this song. Excellent, thank you,
AWESOME
Beautiful song
Through these past recent six years, I had had experiences in my life that seem to say that I might had been Polynesian in a past life. Particularly at Kahoolawe (Hawaii). Although New Zealand might not actually be one of those places, I still feel some kind of welcoming connection in their songs and their language is beautiful just like Hawaiian. It's songs like this one that always has a raw beauty to it. I like that.
Amazing video and thank you for sharing. ^__^
I was very happy to make you happy!!!
A brilliant waiata
I felt so bad for NZ shooting. My poor NZ people. PRAY FOR NZ
This is the clearest and best version of this song i've heard so far, wish I could upload it to my ipod
Young Maori are so immersed in our Maori culture in Aotearoa, throughout New Zealand in 2018, we were never allowed to speak our reo/language from the 1950s to 1980 it was forbidden to do so under British colonial rule
