I respect the guard who kept the people from getting to close. I've seen him do this before, and I like his no nonsense approach. He has every right.

Many people don’t seem to get that the guards/horses aren’t there as merely a prop for pictures. Some guards are definitely much more patient than others. I watched a video of a woman who was petting the horse, putting her hand to the horse’s mouth, “obliging”people by letting them take pictures, touching people’s kids. She would not stop b/c the guard let her do it. Then when he’d finally set a boundary, she wouldn’t take no for an answer and just go to the next one. Something’s not quite right with her or she’s just defiant but, still, people have some nerve. I’m in US and dream of going to London someday and now know what NOT to do (not that I would) but actually these videos are not just entertaining but educational too.🇺🇸
People have no clue about their damn backpacks interfering with the horse. Guards are wonderful.

Actually looking at the horses they largely seem to be ok with the human interaction. Their ears are mostly pointing forward and they seem to engage with the tourists. Of course it isn’t good the tourists are actually enjoying themselves. Is it?

All the guards should be like this one. Stay away from my horse. Want your photos, fine, but stay 2-3 feet away from the horse.

They have done their hour, the back door had been opened, you need people to move to allow the changing of the horses and guards. The bell is chiming to indicate this. That’s why the reins were being used. People assume they can stand very close to the horse. It’s not a good idea. Horses can be unpredictable. That’s the reason for the warning sign.
I’m sure the majority of people hanging around and posing for their stupid selfies have absolutely no clue about the traditions surrounding the changing of the guard. They probably just think it’s some kind of cute toy put on for their benefit. Idiots like that should be banned from hanging around or given massive fines.
I wish this take no nonsense lovely guard, would have a visit from that very famous Lady in red, who is also known as Karen, they are both strong characters!...would make for a great bit of footage no doubt! 💂🙄🐴❣

There are ceremonies performed inside the gates. As well as a little shop..😊 It is the entrance to a building as well, which officials etc. Need to gain access to said building.

For my part, I think it should be this distance (if not a little more) all the time.
The royal guard and the horse do their jobs and should not have to endure sefies and body contact with tourists hundreds of times a day.
Imagine being in their situation. Not so fun huh!?
No, they have no duty to serve tourists that way, neither the horse nor the King's Guard.

Big horse-lover here. Too, I respect the institution and its centuries-old history. The guard is a spectacular and symbolic tradition. It is NOT a petting zoo or an opportunity to harass horses or guards. IMO, there should be an unambiguous and broad cordoned-off zone beyond which the public should not enter. For guards and palace police to have to micromanage the public should be beneath their status.
