  • Longboard fam, in part 2 of our 6 part series we talk about how learning new longboard tricks can be intimidating - especially if you're a beginner longboarder looking for some easy longboard tricks to master. With my method, the Foundation for Flow, the focus is put on taking the tricks you know and working on all the potential combos you could make with them in your longboard dancing and freestyle lines.
With this approach, knowing only 10 beginner longboard tricks in total will translate into 90 unique combos pairs or 720 3-trick lines. Can you imagine that? 720 different variations? DAMN.
The goal to perfecting combos and lines is that you want to limit the amount of adjustments you take between tricks. First off, this forces you to have better form and position. On top of that, it kinda forces you to do the 2nd trick in a way that isn't PERFECT which makes you better at that trick overall.
The thing is, I get DMs from beginner longboarders every day about being stuck and de-motivated. They've learned a few easy longboard tricks and feel pretty good about them, but simply don't know how to longboard in a way that gets them more consistent.
I'm telling you, the Foundation for Flow is the KEY.
By focusing on trying to get better at a certain trick by doing just that trick alone is very limiting. As your style for longboard dancing and freestyle develops and as you start tying more unique lines together, being confident with all these variations will make your riding much more smooth and effortless.
Also, by going through this exercise with ALL the longboarding tricks you know it will round out your style and help you discover new and unique combos you never thought of.
On top of this, all the added milestones will give you a sense of accomplishment and keep you stoked!

Thank you for this video. I've been stuck for a while now but I can start working on these variations because I can do all four of those tricks. I just need to put them together.

You're welcome! I often get in a habit of doing the same tricks and combos over and over and this exercise has really helped round out my style and draw attention to things I still need to work on.

@@desgnarlais Working on switch cross steps and backwards 180 steps. I’m trying to get to pirouettes so i thought learning backwards 180 steps would help with the awkwardness of riding facing the opposite direction of the way the board’s going

Makes a lot of sense! Ive done this for a lot of tricks, it just gets dicey when Im trying to include tre flips and those types of tricks.

Do you need to loosen your plate or get stuck? My deck is quite loose for good turns but at downhill it wobbles and I lose my grip so felt 3times very hard😅

What trucks do you have? There's definitely a balance of stability and carve-abliity but nice trucks like the Paris 43º trucks are nice and the lower degree adds a lot of stability at higher speeds
