    You are very generous with your knowledge. Many thanks. I have spent my life savings on a T8 and several jigs - am a woodturner but would like to sharpen knives as well, so will be in jig heaven shortly as its still on order 🤣

      I can't take it with me, I have no apprentice so I share with you. I also bought my T8 to sharpen my wood turning chisels but I sold my wood lathe because it tried to kill me too many times so I turned to sharpening knives. We have a lot in common. Good luck on your journey.

    Just forgot to ask, do you see any difference in stone wearing by using the Tormek dressing stone vs. diamond plates?

    • @iSharpen

      It's hard to tell. I think it'd be about the same but the diamond plates are much quicker to apply as it only takes a brief touch. Good question!

      Just a quick touch with the 80 grit and it's rough enough to deal with any damaged edges. The 320 is a fantastic finishing grit. Changed the way I use the wheel. I don't use the 1,000 grit as much (if at all) these days but it can take the SG-250 beyond it's original spec to 1,500 grit if you want a shiny edge without paying 38 trillion dollars for the hardly ever used Japanese SJ-250. Luckily I bought mine used, second hand. I abuse it these days for serrated knives.
      Glad you're on the diamond plate train. 🙂

      @@iSharpen Yes, it is nice to use the Tormek again. Usually I do straight razors and kitchen knives by hand but got some "cheaper" knives recently and so I thought of it again. I like your tip first approach. Thanks for that too. :)

    I noticed you don’t seem to use Tormek’s polishing compound and only appear to use Chromium Oxide on the Tormek leather wheel. Any input on the benefits of Green compound over Tormek’s solution?

    • @iSharpen
      @iSharpen  5 місяців тому +1

      Hi Patrick, yes. I’ve mentioned it a few times before but you’d have to dig around in the comments to find it so I don’t mind explaining again as I know it helps people.
      Firstly, it’s messy. Secondly it’s expensive, third of all it’s coarser than green chrome oxide and doesn’t refine the edge as much as I like and lastly it doesn’t last as long as chrome oxide. From what I can tell, my edges are among the sharpest Tormek results online and I get them by using chrome oxide. One bar lasts over a year or more. I did a short video on a comparison between Autosol, Tormek paste and chrome oxide. I’ll go and get you the link and paste it here…pun intended…😂

    Hi Baz. Finally found those diamond plates with the thin black reverse padding on e-bay. They're distributed by "myreachup" but are much more expensive than "just a few dollars". 2 plates (80 & 320) cost USD 39.00 or CDN 53.00. Both prices include shipping. Deluvery quoted as 4 weeks. Hope that helps your subscribers locate these plates. Cheers 🍻🇨🇦

      Well, that sucks. I buy mine for about $13, less if I buy in bulk. I thought they were available universally. Perhaps check eBay Australia. They'll probably send them to you in Canada.

    • @swingbelly
      @swingbelly Місяць тому

      @iSharpen Do you have the name of the manufacturer or distributor? That would help immensely re-checking Ebay Canada or alternately Ebay Australia. Mostly too, A TIME SAVER. Most suppliers don't show both sides of the plates.
      Thanks.

      @@tomtimmer7418 funny you should ask. Just had to buy a new one today. I buy one every two months lately. It takes me 28 knives to make the cost back. The rest of them are profit. I havent heard of these knives either, but I found something called kitchen devils who makes knives that look awfully much like this one. If its the same ones they seem to be 10 dollar knives or so. Not sure why it says "50" for carbon seeing as anything above 1 is considered high carbon steels, and anything above 4 would be practically unusable. But the rest of the elements sounds about right for a stainless steel about the quality of a swiss army knife, so I assume the 50 means 0.50% by mass. Im just guessing but that would fit with the price point at least.
    In any case, impressive finish to get on a grinding wheel and with that low grit imo, it looks close to something i'd get on a 3000 water stone :D

    • @iSharpen
      @iSharpen  6 місяців тому

      You’re correct. I later discovered this was in fact a worn out Kitchen Devil and I also assume the 50 is 0.50% which would make it similar to the X50 or 420 spec medium high quality.
