Hello friends and fans!
I just received 15 old and worn out chisels from a customer. She told me that the chisels belonged to her dad and grandpa, and now was the time someone took good care of them.
My job was to put a new beautiful bevel one them, and make them mirror polished.
And so I did. I didn't record all 15 because it took long enough just to make the big ones straight and even.
I use:
Tormek T8
MB-100 Multi Base
SE-77 Square Edge Jig

I was surprised you made no effort to flation the back. Other than patina was there a reason for that?

Can the back of the chisels be ground flat using the MB 100 jig and diamond wheel combination?
Takes a while. Least your not ruining the hardness with a moder bench grinder
Never ever seen anyone sharpen a chisel on a Tormek using the side of the wheel

That’s the diamond stones that makes it possible to sharpen on the sides, making a flat surface, instead of a hollow.

can you flatten the back of chisels using tormek ? using the side of the diamond wheel ?

You really should have used wet and dry to flatten the backs before re grinding an edge.

How long do the diamond wheels last compared to stone?
You need to watch some more videos how to do it correctly. You start with the back side and then move forward in the process. Nice start but need some work on your steps.

Yeah, I realised that I was doing something wrong.. my bad. Next will be better, hehe.
Very first step folks is to flatten the back. Then grind a new bevel. This is not what is being demonstrated.

Yeah, I noticed that right after I finished editing the video. Totally amateur, hah! Won’t happen again.
Flattened the backside afterwards and shipped to the customer.

Oh and the tormek won't flatten the back on a chisel in that state. 80 grit wet and dry and work up to around 600 grit. The flat back edge is what guides the chisel as you know

How long did it take you to become proficient at using the Tormek grinder?
Hey dude!
All by yourself, it takes months or years to master it. But takes classes (easier online) and get all the tips and tricks you can get, it’s not bad at all. Months (2-6).
It’s worth it!

Sorry for showering you with questions, but I'm actually considering making an investment in this stuff :)
@@Owieczkin No worries man, that's cool. I can't be a big deision to invest in a Tormek (buy the T8!), because it's not cheap. But the quality is the best on the market, and trust me, you an earn it all back pretty fast, by sharpening knives.. in a week or two (if you now how to do it, otherwise, e few months).. I've eanred it back at least 20-30 times during the past 2-3 years. So go for it!
What kind of jigg do you use for the chisel ?

The name of the jig is ‘SE-77 Square Edge Jig’. It comes as a standard with the T-8 Original ;)

Hi. Hope you don’t mind me giving you some advice..
for initial regrind (100 grit, start on one bevel until a full burr is reached, repeat same number of passes on other side of blade, and if there’s a new burr, move to the second stone… if no burr, continue until one is created.. then do one pass on each side… the blade now has a perfect geometry
Stone 2.. this will remove metal, all abrasive and polishing wheels do.. to keep the perfect geometry, do the sharpie test until happy.. then do one pass on each side until you are satisfied… if you do more passes on one side, the knife loses geometry, and you end up removing more steel than needed
Honing wheel… light passes, no more than light pressure. Mix your honing compound with a mineral oil. One pass at a time on each side, from heel to point.
I always use the following basics
Only remove the least amount of steel as possible
Clean wheels with a rare earth magnet, not sand paper
Perfect geometry means quicker sharpening

Need to do the backs too... Otherwise no point. In 11:41 looks like you have a bit o a back bevel, perhaps just from you stropping.
Yeah, I realized.. after I finished this video. Doh.. I did the sharpening on the backside, so now I got a better understanding of chisels and how to sharpen them.

You have to say you really have a great belt on your pants! 👍 He is in the 3rd hole and sits exactly on the zipper of your pants.
You are rounding over the edge on the lether wheel. Can see this on the micro bevel and the edge not shaving very well.
Yeah, I didn't do a pretty good job there. Learned a lot, but makes me cringes a bit, hah. I'll do better in the next ;)

my chisels doesn't turn out exactly 90 degrees with the 90 degree jig. they are off a bit on one side on all of them. Think maybe my stone is not even enough

@@d.k.1394 nah. It was the stone that was uneven, bought the stone truing tool and it fixed the issues. Now im using a diamond wheel anyways and that works flawlessly
