  • Autumn is here, workshops have been cancelled and travel restrictions abound. But at least the beautiful autumn colours and light are now here. Plus, I now have my Kase K9 filter holder and polariser.
    In this video I do a quick review of the Kase K9 filter system and magnetic polariser, a fantastic deal and not only a cheaper option than the Lee polariser, but also much better quality and more ergonomic.
    For a long time, I've needed a solution to the problem of using a polarising filter with ND grad filters. When it comes to landscape photography, a polariser and ND grads are essential filters. A few weeks ago I bought the Kase K9 filter system that also comes with a magnetic polarising filter. Now I already have a Lee square filter holder and had considered buying the special Lee polariser that connects to it. But there were several reasons why I didn’t. In this video, I compare kase vs Lee filters and show you why I am choosing Kase over Lee.

    Good video Ian. I went with the Nisi system. Comes with a kit like yours and turns the polariser in the same way, except it screws on, not magnetic. Congrats on your purchase, I can see in your face you are happy with it.

    Enjoyed your vid. Great pic too!
    I dont use grads so am going to get the magnetic circular set up but you certainly put a good case (no pun intended!) to use the polariser and adapter with existing square filters.
    But, like you warn about the fragility of glass filters I smashed two totally and they werent even on the camera. I lost my balance in a river where a rock saved my demise but the filter pouch cushioned my fall!
    I will be using a 14mm lens on full frame with 82mm ring adapted to 95mm.
    Even so the whole kit with 3 nd filters is still less than I spent on haida glass and firecrest polariser and fittings.
    The most excruciatingly annoying and time consuming thing can be screwing that polariser on and off and messing about putting the filter holder on where I dropped this many times.
    So, magnetic for me and a much smaller and lighter package for my camera bag!
    I'm off to watch your polariser video now👍

      @IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel  3 роки тому

      Yes that is a problem with dropping filters. Although the Kase filters are toughened and I've heard from reliable sources that even dropping them on rocks they haven't even had a scratch. Like I said though, I'm not about to test that on purpose. So far I haven't dropped mine yet either. Magnetic is certainly a big plus. I've dropped my Hoya filters a few times trying to screw it on.

    I selected Kase a few years ago, having tried out basically every other manufacturer on the market (at that time, there are some new kids on the block that I can't vouch for either way). Lee were first to market with their Big Stopper but the price point and product quality of Kase's ND filters has long since eclipsed Lee in my opinion. Also: the drop test! My Kase gear has survived a couple of accidents that would destroy some other filters.

      I’ve heard about the drop test. Good to know, although I hope to never have to put it to the test. 😄

    Great video and picture. Been looking at this system compared to the Cokin nx series. Do you have any experience or insight on the Cokin system as well

    • @IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel
      @IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel  Рік тому

      Thanks. Only experience I have with Cokin is from a budget filter kit I bought years ago. I will say that it was pretty good given the price. Had bad colour cast, but otherwise no other problems. I will say however, that I have found glass filters to be far superior to resin, even those of Lee. Resin filters tend to not work so well at long focal lengths, whereas the Kase grad filter I tried at 400mm was flawless.

    NiSi Also has a great system not magnetic but the CPL fits behind the square filters and can be manipulated easily when square filters are attached

    Great video, Ian. I was actually considering to switch to Kase for a while now. I was wondering though: how easy is it to remove the magnetic filters from the adapter?

    • @IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel
      @IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel  3 роки тому +2

      It’s pretty easy. There are two grooves where you can get your fingers in to pull it out. You can also very easily unscrew and remove everything together. You can then remove the filter after or, as I do actually, just leave it on and put the whole thing in a filter wallet. With everything together it’s still very slim.

    Are you using the Lee rrsin Grads in this holder. There are thinner than 2mm and I've heard they can slip out?

    very nice video and lovely scenery to watch at the same time! However I am struggling to find a system to fit my MFT kit...I really want to be able to use square filters in a holder, the magnetic polariser looks very useful as well. My current MFT lenses have filter sizes 37, 46, and 72 (for which i currently use a 72 - 77 converter for my Hoya set). Any advice in the right direction much appreciated! Keep up the good content mate.

    • @IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel
      @IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel  3 роки тому

      Thanks. The K9 filter holder kit comes with 67-82mm and 72-82mm step up rings. For other sizes I expect you can buy other adapters too. Just visit the link in my description and get in touch with the guys at Kase and they'll tell you what is available.

    Forget the square filters. Stack the Kase round filters. ND grads are no longer needed.

    • @IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel
      @IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel  2 роки тому

      True if you don't want to use ND grads. But while you can exposure blend, I think ND grads still have their place. I personally prefer to do it all is one frame if I can to save processing time. Plus when there are lots of moving elements in your composition or you are doing extra long exposure then exposure blending becomes more problematic.

    Hi Ian: Thanks for preparing and sharing this video. I am currently a Lee Filter user as well, with the same kit that you demonstrated. Does the Lee Big Stopper fit the K9 Filter holder? I was worried about the sponge gasket on the Big Stopper getting in the way. Thanks, Keith

    • @IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel
      @IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel  3 роки тому

      Hi Keith. I can't say for sure, but I understand that the holder can accommodate up to 2mm, and my lee grad filters fit okay. Where are you based? I might know someone near you who could give more info.

      Hi Ian: Thanks for you prompt response. I live in Canada and Kase doesn't offer any products via Canadian retailers, so that makes it difficult. I do know several You Tube creators that I can reach out to that used to use Lee Filters to see what their experience has been. Cheers, Keith

    • @IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel
      @IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel  3 роки тому

      Hey Paul. Well from my experience with the K9 filter and polariser it is excellent both quality-wise and ergonomically. I also got to try one of their glass ND grad filters from a friend and was amazed at the quality there too. Just holding it you can feel how strong it is, compared to the resin filters I have. The main thing though is that there was zero distortion or loss of quality even at 400mm focal length, which with some of my resin filters is a big problem.

    Also mulling a switch as I also find the lee polariser clunky. Are there any Lee filters you have in the 100 series that don’t work with the Kase holder?

    • @IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel
      @IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel  3 роки тому +1

      I only have the 3 stop hard grad and this one fits fine. It's a little fiddly at times, but mostly because it's resin and tends to bend a bit, so as you saw in the video (this is the one i put in as an example) I had to wiggle it a little. But once in it's easy to move up and down. Other photographer's I know have also said they had no problem with using them.

    Hello Ian! Nice video and review. I'm confused about which Kase filter system to buy for my Zeiss Milvus 15mm 2.8. It has a 95mm front filter size. Should I buy the 112mm filter (magnetic) and a 95-112 step up ring to assure there will be no vignetting?

    • @IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel
      @IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel  3 роки тому

      Thanks. You can buy magnetic filters that are 95mm. See here: kasefilters.com/kase-wolverine-magnetic-circular-filters

    • @IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel
      @IanMiddletonPhotographyTravel  3 роки тому

      Ah sorry, I misread your comment. I see about the 15mm lens. Yes you can run into problems with stacking and the suggestion is to buy a step up ring and bigger filters to overcome this. I'll run this question past the guys at Kase and get back to you with more.
