The vast majority of Tesla Supercharges are not open to non-Tesla vehicles. However, Ford announced today that Tesla Superchargers will be open to Ford vehicles in 2024.
Great video as always! I'm with you 100% that these companies that are producing EV's need to stop depending solely on other networks and build some of their own to help out.
Thanks for sharing your charging experience with Tesla and non-Tesla chargers. I have only driven my SR+ MODEL3 on short road trips around southern CA. Here the super chargers are usually pretty full and sometimes there are a few broken chargers so you have to wait a bit to charge. It makes sense to open up Tesla super chargers in remote/under utilized locations (especially along major highways where CCS chargers are lacking) but in crowded areas, it’s only going to make the wait times for chargers worse. My brother had a pretty dicey charging experience driving his new Rivian home from the dealership due to lack of CCS chargers and winter storm draining truck’s battery more quickly. The charging infra structure for all EVs really needs to be improved.
I think for Tesla drivers opening up the supercharger network is going to be annoying. Perhaps they will only give a couple pedestals at each station the CCS adapter?
Your the first person I’ve seen to talk openly about the shortcomings of the Tesla charging system. I’m a big Ford fan, and actually saw my first Lightning in Ontario 🇨🇦
I think Tesla's hardware is far and away the best, both in its construction but especially its maintenance. I do have problems with the charging curve however. With a smaller battery maybe less initial speed but keeping it consistent would be a better course, but who am I to judge.
I wish every charge stop you would have said initial and final states of charge plus the time it took to do it! This would have turned an average road trip video into great information.
Always enjoyable trip ride along with you E-Hermes! Mrs. E-Hermes is really patient! I don't think mine would be as patient :) Do not adjust your "channel" - there's nothing wrong with your attempt to start your charging session with your phone via the app - it's EA! I ran into some of the same issues with the EA app not working on my 1700 mile trip across the west -- from Texas to California! How long talk with EA management about this. They know that issues out there and they're working it. Thank you for your candid feedback on your experiences. As more customers speak out, this will definitely help improve the EA charging infrastructure overtime.
Another enjoyable video. I just did a 500 mile round trip from Pittsburgh to Lancaster PA this week. I have two charging locations on the PA Turnpike, Bedford and Carlisle. While both of them have been up and operating the three times I’ve traveled the Turnpike since I got my Lightning, if one were down it would be a major problem. I agree with you that Ford should be doing more to make charging possible. They tell us that we get to use their’Blue Oval Network’ but it is nothing more than another Plug Share. Thanks for sharing your adventures.
If Tesla really does open up their network it will be a real game changer. Since I have a Tesla too, I do have some mixed feelings about it, but if they keep expanding and keep their excellent maintenance, I think it will be a net positive.
Great video, I would be curious to know the difference in cost to charge the F150L vs the Tesla. You probably don’t have the numbers anymore, but which cost more? I’m guessing it was the F150⚡️
I agree with the other Tesla owners on the massive drop in power around 44-50%..that is not normal. I have a 21’ M3SR & 22’ MYP; we’ve put 62k miles on my 3 and 30k miles on the Y…we’ve never experienced that drop until the 75-80% range. I still think the Tesla superchargers are far more reliable/easier than ElectrifyAmerica or any other network. Thanks for sharing
I'm going to do a parallel charging trip with my daughter's Model Y and see if I get similar or different results at same chargers to remove charger station differences from the equation.
nice video man nice truck also Tesla owner here for a few years . waiting on my hummer ev to come this year and I really wish every other manufacturer would do a better effort to match up Tesla when it comes to charging stations .
I like Ford;s idea of encouraging dealers to install level 3 stations. I don't get GM's thinking of installing level 2 stations (except that they are much less expensive to install).
Have a lightning Pro on order up here in the people republic of Canada, where gas is over 7 dollars a gallon. It's the best deal for any half ton by far, can't wait for my order. Something tells me it's going to be a 2024 but we will see what happens.
@@EHermes Yes you can. 16k option up here and no rebate. So 26750 is too pricey for me for another 90 miles. Pro standard range is rated 386 km instead of the 370 km xlt, seems like plenty to me. The price is certainly right too.
As you saw even on this video, it is very hit and miss. I almost always charge at home so I'm not concerned enough about it to contact Tesla, but even in the best of circumstances I believe Tesla's curve is more parabolic and Ford's is more linear.
The problem is that these companies know that maintaining a reliable charging network is costly. This includes setup, maintenance, and software security. Tesla did something that no other car manufacturer has done and that is establish a network with regular maintenance. These auto makers do not want to foot the bill on this so they rely on other networks which is horrible for the consumer.
Thanks for the video! Chargers are now open to all. Just purchased my 2023 lightning lariat er

I think Kia/Hyundai giving free charging to buyers at Electrify America is particularly bothersome.

Thank you for this video I literally was looking for this exact comparison!!

I try to do that, but i get caught up in hooking up the charger and forget.

God bless Mrs. E-Hermes. She has been putting up with my nonsense for over 40 years.

So if Lightning is able to use Tesla Superchargers… that would be your go to vehicle?
I will split between the Lightning and Rivian R1S.

The F-150 is about half as efficient as the Tesla model Y, so it costs about twice as much to charge it for the same distance traveled.
I wonder was going on with your charging on the Y....I know it slows down around 60% but it's still usually around 80-90 until close to 80%...weird.
As you saw, at some stations it kept decent speeds well past 60%, but at others, not.

So what are you doing with your Lightening while driving the Model Y home?
It is staying on Sanibel. I recently flew back to Sanibel for the rest of the season and will drive the Lightning back to Ohio in the spring.

You will love it, but I don't believe an individual can purchase a Pro with the extended range battery.

Interesting that you can get that configuration in Canada.
@@EHermes Yup seen an 85k dollar pro on the lot. I can confirm for sure.
@EHermes
Can you keep the climate control on overnight when you sleep?
Absolutely
Anyone with a Lightning in the St. Louis area that would be willing to let me take a look before I decide to place my order?
That Tesla charging curve can’t be normal.
Have you mentioned it to Tesla service?

Just say kilowatts. It has fewer syllables than kW. 🙂
