Actually at 15A and 110V you should get 1.65kW (AxV=W). But if you have a 16A EV Charger, with a NEMA 5-15 plug, you will not get 1.65 kW, you will only get 1.3 kW. Why? Because a NEMA 5-15 plug is only able to draw 15A and your EV charger will automatically go to its next lower level, which is usually 12A or lower (12Ax110V= 1.3kW). Therefore if you are using a NEMA 15 plug don't buy a 16A charger, get a 15A charger and get 1.65 kW not 1.3... or less.
I have used third party chargers and error my rivian out every time. Not something recommended.
I have used both the A2Z and Lectron and never had a problem.
@@EHermes I’m glad you did not have issues but I have tested them on multiple Tesla chargers. I pick up a Tesla adapter and my first time charged went without getting any errors. Open the Tesla app, select the location and charger, connect the charger into the adapter and plugged it in my r1t. It kick in and charged without any problems.
1hr charge every 150 miles...
About right, depending on speed.
Nope! Disagree.
Hu?
41 KWh per 100 km (converted 1.5 mile/kwh) is pretty darn good. I test drove a braxton creek 17bh the other week (very windy day) and I was getting 54 KWh per 100 km. Made me wonder if I could make the trailer work road tripping. I could live with 41! I did the return run to get the 54 by the way, I think even a side wind makes a big difference.
Thank you for these details. We haven’t started taking long trips with our 2024 EQE 350 SUV yet. Hopefully, MB will supply it soon. They were supposed to include it originally. Also, now there some Tesla super chargers where it already has our type adapter to use with non-tesla vehicles.
We're in premium site 107 in a few days.
Very cool adventure! Thanks for letting me ride along. Wouldn’t mind hearing miles and energy used stats.
I really need to keep track of those statistics.

If you can solve these problems, Your channel will get more engagement. If you can give me permission I can tell to you about these problems. Can I tell here or email? Okay?
Tesla Superchargers work now YAY!!!
Standard range or extended range?
Extended Range
Does these fit gen2?
I believe it does, but since I did not personally install on a Gen 2, I can't swear to it. The say the brackets slide along the running board rails makes it seem that it certainly would.
So can you stop at virtually ANY Tesla charger?
@@keithlambert6217 no, only version 3 and 4, and not even all of them because they have a few high traffic ones locked out. Still, night to tow along most interstates.
1,358 miles/$343.53 = 3.95 miles per $1. That seems comparable to the cost of the same trip with a gasoline F-150 under the same load, if gasoline is around $3.50-$4/gallon.
DC fast charging is not cheap. The savings come in day to day use when you charge at home for around $0.10 kWh (or free with solar).
Hey, I've been thinking about towing a teardrop with my EV9. I want to plug the EV into the 50 amp with a 40 amp portable charger and the teardrop into the 30 amp 120. What do you think?
I do that all the time with my Casita.
No thanks, you charged it 12 times to go only 1350 miles, with an average charge time of over 1 hr. 12 + hrs wasted to charge. I will keep my V8 F150 with a 36-gallon tank.
OK. But when I am not on a trip, I fuel up for free with my solar panels.
I'm with Jeff, If I can't tow my boat 75 miles to Key Largo and back on one charge , that's not for me... Everything else about the truck is cool just that tow range. Ford gets it to 200 mile tow range under load and I'd be interested
If you are going to 'refuel' while towing so much, you want to go to truck stops... Have they put in superchargers at pilot travel centers?
@@thetruthhurts6260 You should easily be able to tow 150 miles round trip to Key West. Speed is what kills range, especially towing. I know from multiple trips to the Keys that it is a slow drive.
@@engineeringVirtue yes, they are starting to put DC fast chargers as part of the federal infrastructure plan at Love's and Pilots.
Great co-host... :)
She is the real star of the channel.
@@EHermes as it should be.
Looks really good. > Happy wife = Happy Life! All good 👍
Having charging add ~30% to your travel time is just not optimal for long hauls :(
It does add a little time, but I stop about that often anyway.
I think you missed the biggest thing about Palo Duro Canyon. It is the second largest canyon in America, only beaten by the Grand Canyon.
Wow!!! A whole 5,000 lbs?
yeah, its a half ton pickup, not an F-350 Superduty
Funny part is 2019+ Ford Ranger can tow 7500lbs
I'm perfectly happy with my diesel F350. It has an aux diesel tank and holds 140 gallons of diesel. I buy diesel where it's cheapest. It will be decades before EV's can take over.
I'm glad that works out for you.
Cool story bro.
Have you seen the new EPA standards? It will be only a few years and diesels will be obsolete from new emissions standards.
Man talk about getting every bit of range out of the truck! Gutsy 👊💪⚡️🛻
Some would say gutsy; some would say stupid.
@@EHermes 😆😆👏👊💪⚡️🛻
I don't do interstates. Backroads across America can be challenging to say the least to find chargers. Too much anxiety.
There is almost always an old federal highway that runs near and parallel to most interstates. This gives you the best of both worlds; interstate free driving but with easy DC charging access.
Nice video. It seems that using an EV requires substantial forward planning along with longish drive times. Thanks.
@@glennspence3290 it does take some planning.
For sure while towing or trying to be fast. Otherwise, just use the Tesla nav.
I was able to watch maybe half of this, you never told us what the range was. Kind of made the whole video completely useless.. not worth waiting around to see if you get around to actually talking about the range.
@@RGVPrisoner I got about 180 miles on a full charge; 150 miles on 80%.
No way you get that ramge. I get 164 km@EHermes
@@nardoyxzmany considerations determine mileage per kilowatt and this is especially true when towing. First, the coefficient of drag when towing an airstream is MUCH different than the coefficient of drag on a more traditional travel trailer profile of the same general weight. Second, the terrain plays a massive role in mileage. 150 miles on the east coast is much easier to achieve pulling an airstream than the same mileage in the Pacific North West. Think hills vs mountain ranges. And the third major difference is traveling temperatures. Towing on the east coast would be much easier on the battery and give much more range than towing in the southwest deserts. Extreme heat and extreme cold really impact battery range. Of course I’m also assuming he has the extended range battery, and so do you. That’s a big assumption and if both vehicles have different battery packs, it’s a night and day difference of course. Just these elements described above could easily explain why you are getting 101 miles range, and he’s getting 150 miles of range. There are many other smaller and less impactful reasons as well of course.
@@nardoyxz I must drive slower
Did you happen to drive/stop in Alva, FL? I thought i saw this truck and trailer pass through there recently
@@mcznbd234 I think I went through there
What made you think the batteries or the motor was too hot? in that still picture you showed the temperature gauges were in the middle. I bet it was just voltage sag from a very low battery. I've seen more than one lightning run out of charge with miles remaining on UA-cam.
Yeah my guess would be low voltage and the battery cut power to protect itself honestly ford really needs to work on their BMS I seem to see ford EVs run out of juice more often than just about any other manufacturer
@@Crazypostman it showed over 50% power right before I pulled up to the traffic light. I do think it was a voltage issue.

@@aaronbussey3856 aw shucks. Thank you!
Did you run in tow hall mode?
@@sc5102day nope, left it in standard mode
@@EHermeswhy leave it in standard? Won’t tow haul help with cooling and thermal management when it knows it’s towing?
@@bowefamilyEV mine only has the standard tow package, so I don't think it would help with the cooling. When you hook up the wiring harness it knows you are towing.
So sad to see the entitlement of parking how ever you want for your convenience. Unhook the trailer! Quit blocking traffic lanes. Be considerate of others when out in public. Pulling a trailer comes with responsibilities and extra work. Doesn't matter if no one else is there when you pull in. The parking spots aren't marked as a recommendation that you can ignore.
Lol. It definitely matters if nobody is there. I've been pulling trailers ever since I started driving and no way am I unhooking if I can park without affecting anyone.

Wow someone's sounds butt hurt did your daddy not love you enough
What adapter are you using? I'm still waiting since 2/29 for mine from Ford. Assuming you are in an ER range?
I've heard good things about both the A2Z and lectron adapters
@@robertbrewer1871 I used the Tesla/Ford adapter on this trip but I have used A2Z and Lectron, all will complete success.
Another reason the Truck may have cut off when you hit 0% - is the voltage drop. When voltage drops, current goes up, and thus heat. It may have been a heat issue with the motor due to high amp draw.
@@hieyeque1 that could well be. After letting it settle down I was able to get it moving again.
What's you average miles per kw towing Casita?
@@willberg12 1.5 miles per kWh on highway; about 1.7 miles per kWh on rural roads.
One thing that might be good to add for future calculations is average temperature outside. Mainly cause weather has such an effect on the battery.
Does it?
@@madweazl yeap! If it’s too hot or too cold the battery has to work more
I stress out about everything... so watching you doing this all and just easy going about it is a dream of mine lol. (Making it to each charger, blocking potentially, etc.)

Everyone from NE Ohio moves to florida. Let me guess, you’re in Naples? I have many friends down there from Youngstown.
LOL, Sanibel actually, about 45 minutes from Naples. I still have my residency in Ohio.
Great video. We will be down (to South Florida) this winter from Illinois. We will be in our 2024 Model Y. I agree with you with Electrify America, we took our Chevy Bolt last year to Florida and Gainesville was completely off line and numerous times we had to wait to charge because some were broken and some were off line, it was terrible. This past July we took the Model Y to Estes Park Colorado, wow the supercharger network was a game changer. Stay safe my friend.
And having access to DC fast chargers is the best of all worlds.
So what does the rear harness plug into?
It plugs into the camera area. You have to route a wire through the headliner.

Considering the R1S 2025 model. I found that the Large battery and the Max Battery are the same they just tweaked the cell chemistry large pack and call it a Max. The difference is the large has 135 KWh and the Max has 149 KWh at 100% charge (not recommended).Do you feel the Max is worth the $7,000.00 upgrade for about 20 miles more range when pulling a camper?
For my use case, I do. It just provides more flexibility when towing.
@@EHermes Thanks for your input 👍

Thank you. It keeps me busy.
I sure wish they made the Lightning in a SUV then I could justify the purchase. I'm past the need of a pickup truck and need to include 3 standard poodles and wife
We also use the Rivian R1S to pull the Casita. To overcome the inadequate inverter generator we use a Bluetti solar /3000 watt inverter. I use the 15 amp Rivian outlet to recharge the solar generator. It's not ideal, but we make it work.

@@EHermes Yesterday I took the new Model X for a test drive in Sarasota and then drove to Tampa and tested the Rivian R1S.
