S1/E1; Will I Be Able To Leave The Berth Singlehanded With A 49ft Trawler Yacht??

  • Опубліковано 11 гру 2021
  • ENGLISH (Nederlands hieronder):
    My first video on board of Motor Vessel Lady Liselot. Well to be honest, I produced some before, but they all went 'down the drain'. Trying to get the right format for this type of video, and whilst doing so, I show you how I leave my berth.
    With just very little room between the mooring pile and the jetty, one have to be careful when leaving the berth. But what to do when you drive a 49ft Blue Ocean #trawleryacht singlehanded most of the time? Perhaps you ask yourself: how do I drive a big boat like a 49ft Trawler? Well, let me show you, how I do it.
    Be sure to watch to the end for more of the usual comical sailing guy.
    I hope you enjoy this one, leave me a comment (I would love to hear from you) and as always, thank you for your support - much love to you all
    NEDERLANDS:

    Regarding the RED/GREEN and going. I was told be a Bridge Keeper the same as you said. BUT if anything goes wrong whilst the red light is still on then it is your own fault. Green only it is their fault if the bridge fails. I.m watching from the beginning. Cheers Michael

      @@MVLadyLiselot I've seen lots of boat reviews and videos of boats of all sizes under way but I'm more interested in how a vessel like yours can be handled by one person, especially when it comes to leaving a not very straightforward mooring! Your commentary is Informative enough without getting technical plus the addition of humour makes your videos a pleasure to watch.

    Just found your channel and will def be subscribing. I was stationed in Europe for almost 15 years and I always loved visiting the Netherlands. It was one of the few places as an American I felt welcome. I sincerely hope it is still that way. I spend a lot of time when discussing my travels to most Americans the difference between Holland and Netherlands. They really have no idea. Having just turned 72 and with all this Covid stuff going on, I fear I will not get to make one more trip there as I had planned. Still have the memories from trips past. Take care and look forward to following you.

      With the mast down, LadyLiselot's Flybridge still has a height of 5,6m. So I have to be carefull with bridges. Last summer I planned to go to Maastricht but due to the terrible rainfalls in both Belgium and Germany, we were not allowed to sail the Maas. The canals had fixed bridges that were around 4,8m (just one low bridge in a complete route is enough to spoil that route) so I had to change plans.

      @@ramarkble101 True. My previous boat was a 36ft longkeel sailing ketch cutter, 1 engine, no thrusters. Longkeel boats are hell to drive backwards as you perhaps know. I did all the (un)docking with springs. But with Lady Liselot having 25m2 of 'sail' out all the time because of her dimentions, I am in paradise with these powerful thrusters.

    Just watched your 1st video and subscribed. Great content and presentation. Looking forward to following your channel and picking up some tips and ideas. We are from the US and own a Thomasz 13.9 Business class (Lady L) that we berth and winter hall at Marina De Horne in Teherne, Friesland just off the PM canal. We get quite windy up there and as you indicated in the video " If the wind says no then you just don't go" is the best policy We always get a good laff when we're relaxing at our berth and hear a ship steaming up the canal navigating with their thrusters.. We also have about 2 meters to spare between our neighbor, thrusters are a beautiful thing as long as you use them sparingly. We've had our boat for 4 seasons but 2 were a bust as we weren't able to travel due to the Covid so hopefully we'll be back on the water this season and maybe travel south and explore down your way. You've already convinced me to go forward with a nice camera system that I've been thinking about for some time. Best of luck and keep up the good work.

    • @MVLadyLiselot
      @MVLadyLiselot  2 роки тому

      Those thrusters... On my previous sailing boat I had none, and still am 'anxious' to use them, since so many dingy drivers even use them for steering. I guess that's the sound you mention. Too bad you could not visit due to c19 regulations. From the comments on my FB and YT video's I know more US people have a boat in The Netherlands. Let's hope 2022 brings open borders again!

      Yep, that the ringvaart. Red/Green means ‘you are the first in line’. The other side always sees Red. And whilst asking doe an opening the operator always informs all boats waiting for the bridge in what order one should go. Besides the Colors jou hear “East side first”

      I kept my 1930 built twin engined center rudder wooden cabin cruiser in the Netherlands for last three years I owner her, most of the time I was single crew and got on fine. So after the english channel crossing To Oostende where I attended Oostende at Anchor I made my way up to Holland via the canal system. I like to go against lock walls as it was easier to attach lines, one line fixed back from the bow so as not to pull the bow in, the other a stern line both run to midship and repeated on the opposite side.
      Boats would then raft up on me and ask for a hand even though they had crew, also they would take for ever to release with lots of faffing around. I would get bored and let my lines go and pull them out of the lock. Slowly of course and it was great to watch their faces.
      So I will check out your channel to see if I've sailed there. I over wintered in Yerseke.
      Thanks for posting.

      @@TheByard I have not been to Yerseke on camera, but please subscribe and perhas you'll see it back again. And yes, in summer people love to raft along side and I help them with the lines. It seems that docking is a skill quit some people find difficult. I bought Lady Liselot because of the middle bollard (among many other things) so docking is very easy. In hard winds (22+ knts) she for sure can be a pain, because of almost 25m2 boat the wind sees as a sail. But also in those conditions: the more you practise...

      @MVLadyLiselot  2 роки тому

      This was the first video on my channel and I am using the winter berth. With most SW winds, I have the protection of the buildings, but it happened that with 22knts of wind I could not leave singlehanded. It has not been the case that the wind was to strong (I always keep an eye on windfinder.con before I start a journey to see wind predictions a week upfront) to dock, but if that would been the case the harbour/marina has jetty’s facing another position so that docking for that moment would be possible.
      When on anchor, I wake up with windfinder and if necessary I will pick up and drop anchor 400m further with more protection. In the area’s where I stay the most (Westeinder- and Kagerplassen) there is never the danger of dregging, but it’s more a little (spoiled kid…) of discomfort.

This video was first titled "A trawler leaves her berth" and in a week's time, I only had 98 views. As I delved into the techniques to attract more viewers, I learned the secret behind a good title. We are now 5 weeks further and see for yourself the result when it comes to the number of views. Just take a look at which titles on YT you've watched yourself lately; the one with a simple title, or the one with a title which is a question or which shows drama. Apparently the human brain works that way. I hope you forgive me for adjusting to that...

Also, when only using a single prop, turning the bow one meter to port means swinging the aft (about) two meters to starboard. So the thrusters are handy when you're moored in a corner.
