      Hi andy, I recently upgraded from ancient xps l501X 2010 to and a loq 2024, I was wondering what I could do with that old laptop I was running windows 10 on it and due to bottleneck of that 8gb DDR3 ram i eventually had to upgrade, was wondering if I could install Linux or something (which I am not knowledgeable about) and use it as a streaming device.
      Also that laptop heats up so much in idle so maybe I will have to build a case for it and attach a fan. The cpu health is at a 100% tested with Intel tool.
      Is it really worth it? Can it be used only for streaming? Can I use it as a personal could server? It is stuck at sata 2 speeds. Usb ports working on hopes and prayers.

    I use a 27" iMac and have replaced the NVMe with a 1TB and installed a 2TB SSD to get them working as a fusion 3TB drive and it's fast AF.
    I've been working on PCs for about 30 years and yeah, I've got a permanent scar on my right hand from an iMac power supply from a few years back.

    How ironic, I'm currently doing the exact repair on the same iMac model. Andy, instead of replacing the glass with an adhesive back you can get a magnetic kit that uses flat magnetic strips to adhere the screen to the frame. It's convenient but if you iMac is housed where there's dust or humidity I'd stick with the adhesive strip.

    • @SrApathy33
      @SrApathy33 2 місяці тому +20

      Magnets are convenient if you gotta open up the device more often, but a customer really just needs it shut.

      @@SrApathy33 Indeed I was actually going to say something of the effect. This repair is going to stick around the office to be used for lightweight tasks, (scheduling, printing, downloading Lupe's best work, whatever...) so yes indeed customers that don't plan to later undress their machine and poke around should as stated earlier, use the adhesive tape and maintain a secure seal. Personally I like the magnetic glass for another reason...I too have tiny racoon-like fingers that always seem to get prints on the inside of the glass so when I noticed it I can simply grab a small suction cup I use for removing iPhone screens and pull it off and clean it.

      If it’s an Intel iMac, hold down Command, Option, and R (on a Windows KB, use Windows as Command, and Alt as Option) then turn the device on and it will give you an option to connect to Wi-Fi. On this screen, you can also plug in an ethernet cable. Do the same command from before (Command+Option+R, if that doesnt work, try Command+R) and a loading bar should appear. After a couple minutes, you should be able to restore macOS using the Internet Recovery!

    Back at my computer repair job from a few years back, we removed those kinds of adhesive from computers by using a little wooden skewer stick. The idea is that you approach it perpendicular to the adhesive and rotate the stick so that the adhesive sticks to the stick, and then you can roll it the opposite direction of the direction you're removing the adhesive. Doing that greatly reduces the amount of scratching that takes place with the initial scrape plus can also help make sure that the adhesive doesn't break halfway while also (hopefully) not breaking any cables in the path.
    But it looks like it doesn't matter too much for

    One bit of advice that makes the whole thing a lot easier, lay the computer down on the table to do the repair rather than standing up. There's less of a chance of dropping the screen and breaking it, much easier. Additionally, when you're done, test it all out by securing the screen with painters blue tape to make sure everything works before putting on the replacement adhesive.

    This way you can check that everything is working. If you have made a mistake and you need to re-open the imac, you will have to carry out again the same process of buying new adhesive, cleaning the old one etc.

    Replacing the drive and using OpenCore has been my go to for these - such an easy job for such a great end result. Also that pizza cutter is designed to be just deep enough to clear the adhesive without damaging the camera wiring.
    Also also, I did once touch the PSU accidentally, it shouldnt kill you but it is SUPREMELY unpleasant.

    The 2020 27" iMac with the 16GB 5700 XT & 18 Core iMac Pro are some of the best AIO desktops you can buy today, and they are still supported with modern macOS. Intel MacBooks sucked, but Apple's Intel-based Desktops were KINGS! Up to 256GB of memory! Cant get that on a modern M3 iMac

    Great, entertaining video on how to replace the HDD in these old iMacs. I'm an ex-Apple authorized technician and can confirm that these were the last, best upgradeable iMacs (though it would have been nicer if they had used the magnetic screen attachment like the older ones). The MacBook Pro (mid 2012) was the last, best upgradeable MacBook Pro as well. After these, Apple just got more and more anti-repair. I disliked the proprietary SSDs and even worse, the soldered on board SSDs. OpenCore Legacy Patcher really breathes new life into these old Macs too. I run the latest macOS on my MacBook Pro (mid 2012) and it works fine. Sure, it's not as fast as a new MacBook but it still works well.

    I just bumped the SSD in my ancient and pampered Mac Pro 2012 Tower from 512 GB to 1TB. "System Files" were EATING the Boot Drive. To be sure, I also have a 2TB Storage Drive in Bays 2 and 3 running as a Mirrored RAID. Paranoid. There are two kinds of computer users - those who have lost data... and those who WILL.

    Hey, I just found this channel a little while ago and I’ve already seen a few videos.
    I was curious, have you ever considered (or done-I haven’t exactly gone back that far on your videos list) some videos on basic tools or skills for computer or phone repair, or the kind of basic maintenance you would hope people would be able to do on their own?
    I know there are tons of how-tos and such, but it can be hard to know what you don’t know, you know? A video or two that just listed the kinds things a lay person could do, the tools necessary for them, and links in the notes to other resources and actual tutorials, I think would be super helpful in giving people a start in learning how to repair and maintain their own stuff.

    I’m learning how to try my hand at re-balling with hot air. This way I can dig through my old ddr 3 three ram sticks to see if I can remove chips from it then give my old MacBook more ram by re-balling new memory chips to it.
    If I mess it up oh well. The old laptop had to retire at some point. It’s the old way I can try to make an upgrade to a laptop that isn’t upgradable. And unfortunately the nvme is soldered too. So I can’t upgrade storage. That’s too complex to try and re-ball it.
    8 gigs option should never exist. But people buy it so Apple keeps pushing it. Apple should sell their products with 16gigs minimum.
    Great video. But currently I don’t even have money to spend on old Mac’s which is why I’m still running my janky late models 2018 MacBook Pro that’s a furnace and slow as hell. Almost thinking about downgrading to the os versions that launched around the time this laptop did to see if I can speed this old laptop up. 👍

      I have a 2010 MacBook pro that I upgraded the ram and threw an SSD. Used opencore to throw monetary on. Was quick as hell. Also had a 2016 MacBook air was pretty damn quick. I just fixed my Mac install on the 2010 today for a data repair job at work. How the hell is a 2018 MacBook pro slow... I use a gaming desktop so I know what an actual quick computer feels like. Maybe you have a virus or a bottleneck in your computer

    • @leosthrivwithautism
      @leosthrivwithautism Місяць тому

      @@Tuna-l7p it's the 13 inch most basic and lowest spec they had at the time just so I could afford it. I was surprised to learn this laptop has DDR 3 ram. I thought that by 2018 Apple had already moved over to DDR 4. It only had 8 gigs of ram and was always pegged when I would check constantly giving me the spinning wheel.
      As a test I threw on a version of Mojave which was the os it launched with and noticed a decent performance boost.
      Then threw on sequoia and noticed the performance go back to what it was.
      The OS just seems to bit heavier for the specs I have. This is why I wanted to throw on 16 gigs and see if that gave it a little boost. And less spinning wheel.
      But other programs I use is Logic Pro x for music production. iMovie and DaVinci resolve studio for video production.
      When it comes time to render is when the laptop goes full fan power heats up like crazy and struggles at a rate of 2 to 4 fps on video rendering and slightly faster for music production.
      As a comparison, my asus zen book with 16 gigs of ram and a discrete you renders at 15 to 20 fps and completes videos renders much quicker than my MBP.
      But that's usually only when I have to work on things remotely from a different location. At my home office I have a computer I built myself with 64 gigs of ddr 4 and an AMD 5950x for the processor coupled with a 16 gig version of the rtx 4060 ti card I render on average right around 200 fps which completes my renders way faster.
      Unfortunately I don't have 2 to 4 thousand to spend on a laptop with actual specs made to render DaVinci resolve and such.
      So more often than not I have my zen book with me and MBP had just been sitting ideal. Unless Im working on sound. That's all it's been used for recently. If ever I have a couple thousand just lying around I'll upgrade this tired old laptop to a better Mac. But currently I can't even walk by the apple section or go in a Mac store. Max I can spend is 900 bucks. And nothing Apple is currently selling is 900 bucks when it comes to their computers.
      But yeah. No virus. It's just slow. It works. It's a working laptop it's just like back in the days when you could power up the computer, go use the restroom, cook some breakfast, maybe have some coffee and just maybe by then it was ready to use. If I give this tired laptop time it does everything. I just can't expect quick results is all.

    • @Tuna-l7p
      @Tuna-l7p Місяць тому +1

      @@leosthrivwithautism I would run Mojave if you can then. ya apple sucks and they get away with a lot since the avg consumer doesn't know they bought crap until they turn it on and wonder why it runs slow. I tend to avoid recommending laptops but when I do I say to overcompensate and get something more then what you need. Since realistically a high end laptop in 4 years will become average. And an average laptop turns borderline unusable. With os updates and apps becoming more demanding over the years
