If people want another option - when I made my Jester cosplay, I used plastic rope for my tail core! It only cost me a few dollars from the hardware store. Then I made the spade from cardboard, and hand sewed on some tights I dyed with food dye and vinegar! Mine ended up around finger width, so I was able to use some pretty rings for the cuff!
I was going to go as Jester for Comic Con this year (but it was cancelled) and I had no idea how I was going to make her tail. This is really helpful. Thank you Ginny!
If your budget is a bit healthier it might be worth investing in one of costail's products. If memory serves I'm fairly certain that Ginny made a vid of one in the past
Thanks for your support and including us in your video. You're so well articulated, fun, smart and caring person. The cosplay community and us are lucky to have you, well the world is lucky to have you ♥️
This is almost EXACTLY how I made my second Jester tail too! I used the dowels that where cut in half, cut a notch in the inside of one, and glued a wire in. It has a really natural bounce and is completely posable for photos. You have to make a little harness for it to sit properly though. Great minds think alike lol! Yours turned out really good! 💕💕💕
I’m kinda shook, I’ve been wanting to use those foam dowels for something but couldn’t think of anything. Now I’m working on my own D&D character who has a tail, and I’ve been wracking my brain on how to make it......two problems solved. 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
this tutorial is too powerful, as in i watched this 2 months ago and just barely acted upon it, performing the steps by memory and constructing a 7 foot long tiefling tail on accident, as in i've constructed the tail mere minutes before writing this comment. 10/10 have to attach it to something to avoid dragging it on the floor. looks awesome
This is so great! I made a home brew moth woman character (Lunala race) and I want to cosplay her so bad but was dreading trying to work out the thinner extra arms! I remembered watching this video a while ago and am gonna apply the foam dowel and fishing hook method to make my bug arms! I’m so excited! Thank you Ginny di!!
1. Always wondered how people make tails! Never had to myself (my cosplays when I've bothered have been Kevin from Sin City, Heath Ledger's Joker, Homestar Runner, and Mario), but cool to know! 2. Love your new hairstyle. Bouncy!

OMG! This just gave me the perfect solution for my phoenix tail! I wanted it to be trailing "flames," and painting foam dowels and gluing on organza flames is totally the way to go.
This was so useful omg I’m doing an oc for my first cosplay (Francis beau my beloved ) and had no idea how to do his tail. It’s a super thin black tail with fur at the end and I resorted to using garden wire but it doesn’t look good I’m definitely going to try this

I did one with expanding foam for the tip and electric cable for the long part. And dental floss instead of fishing thread! Thank you so much! It was very inexpensive and easy to do
When I made mine I made a tube of fake leather around a core of those giant rubber twisty ties that are used for hanging big heavy things with some batting to keep its shape. Nice thing about that is I can shape it how ever I like and it holds it. Part of the twisty tie sticks out so I can attach it to a belt.
Thank you so much for posting this! I really want to make some flexible antennas to attach to my headphones and this seems like a very simple beginner friendly option! :D

Ahh, I'm so glad I stumbled across this video!! I'm cosplaying as Modeus from Helltaker this year and this helped immensely! I'm going to buy a cheap bracelet to tie the fishing line to so I can hide it under my sleeve since the hem of my skirt is too short. 😅 Many thanks to you!!!

this is probably way too late to ask but I wonder anyway (ill probably figure something else on my own which I'll add later when I make it but I wondered what you would recommend anyway) what if I wanted to make the base of the tail (the part that attaches to the butt) thicker and make it like tapper down at the spade? how would you go about making the base thicker? (honestly my craft is like paper mache mostly so Ill probably add like paper towels and tape where I want it bigger, wrap it in plastic wrap. and then attempt to paint that part matte black or like you said using stretchy fabric to wrap around it.
Question: how well do you think the thicker EVA foam dowels (I think they're the 30mm ones, also yaya han brand) for making a tiefling tail? I don't currently have any of the middle size ones to spare for a tail (saving them for an armor build). Would they still work but bet stiffer or would they not work at all? I'm hoping to make the tail for ren faire and future cosplays....
This is very helpful since I want to cosplay my tiefling bard (he can be seen on my profile pic) as well as Moxxie from Helluva Boss. But I have a question. How should I attach the tip of to pants, when I want it to still look more realistic (something like you did with yours attaching it to the skirt)?
Any tips for what fabric to use if I want to match a caucasian skintone? Most skintone/tan/peach fabrics don't really look like skin, or match well to my color. I just know I'd be a horrid klutz at painting my face and look really weird, so I'm gonna go with my normal skin, lmao.
what brand of fishing line do you use and what is it's strength and do you purely go for strength or decreased visibility or a good combination of both and how often do you have replace them any way stay healthy and stay safe
It really doesn't matter, the tail is extremely lightweight so the line is never put under any real stress. I just used the stuff I had at my house. I've never had to replace it.
I am just curious bet what happened to the robotic tail? I thought you were still using it in your videos when cosplaying as jester. (It looks good either way but I was just curious.)
The robotic tail is awesome, but there are inconveniences to using it for everyday cosplay! I can't sit with it on, it makes a noise when it moves (so I can't use it for video that requires audio), and it's large and inflexible, which makes it difficult to travel with. I use the nylon spandex ones! Each one has their own benefits, but the great thing about WLC is that they dye all their fabrics to the same color palettes, so in general they match each other across products! You can get every single item in every single color, basically, so you can pick and choose which items suit you.
I've actually got a cosplay quandary myself. I was able to find footwear for my character in the correct size and style but not the right colour. Is there a way to paint them or otherwise change their colour to the correct one without the end result looking like a 12yo made the attempt (currently black patent leather if that helps)
Yes! You should pick up some leather paint, it's designed to adhere to leather and flex without cracking. I like Angelus brand. If you're careful not to get it on any non-leather pieces (soles, trim, etc.) it can look quite natural.

Oh my gosh yes, this method would be perfect for that!! Good luck!
My friend and I are going to a comic con as Blitzø and Millie (sadly we don't have someone cosplaying Moxxie) so we're watching this tutorial to figure out how to make their tails! It's cool seeing another helluva cosplayer 😂
Im going to attempt a Fizzarolli cosplay lol!
hat tail tutorial is exactly what I needed to finish up my tiefling cosplay! I was way over complicating it and i didnt even think to connect the tail with fishing line to another part of the costume or body in order to have a moving tail! Im really dumb! 😅 Thank You for this!
Not dumb at all, I so often find myself overcomplicating costume things! Then I see someone else do something so simple and effective and I'm like WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT...
